[Q] Permanent solution to too low In-call volume on headset - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm on Galaxy S2; Android 2.3.3; KE7.
When using headphones on my device the volume is great for music, videos, youtube, and even skype. However for some reason it's only around half of that level when calling (even tough the volume is set to maximum).
I've done some google research and found out that it's quite a common issue with this phone. A workaround has been found by using some codes. However, it is not a permanent solution.
I've found a post which says that someone had called Samsung and they acknowledged the issue and will send them a new phone where this issue has been fixed.
1) Has anyone found a permanent solution to increasing the volume of the call when on headset?
2) I've also found a post where someone says that apparently Samsung will fix this issue in Android 2.3.4. Can you confirm this? When will this be available? If it's longer than 1-2 weeks I will have to send my phone for a refund/exchange (although I love it).
Your advice on the above is much appreciated.

Hi, I've done some further research and I think I've found the solution:
First make sure that your sound is on (as you can't access the volume settings in the silent mode) -> press the Menu button -> Settings -> Sound -> Volume -> and then increase the 'Incoming call' volume.
I've just tested the call volume when on headset and it has been increased to a more that enough level. Great. My love to this phone is growing
Now I have to figure out how to disable the camera shutter sound....but that's a question for another post...

It seems that the solution above worked for some time but now my phone started to deliver very low call volume when on headphones. Maybe it's due to the Android update, I don't know.
However I found that the issue is related to the media volume. For example when I listen to music and turn the volume low then this affects the incoming call volume and it becomes low as well.
The solution to this problem seems to be: make sure that the music volume is max before you want to make a call. I've just tested it an is seems to do the trick.
It would be great to hear to another solutions to this problem for unrooted phones.

Heard this app works well,

[Q] Anyone else having problems with low microphone volume?

People complain that they have problem hearing me in a call. My friends, who also has a GSII, experiences the same thing. Anyone else? Is there an app that can adjust the mic-level?
Same problem here. I was talking in my regular volume to my girlfriend and she said she's having hard time hearing me.
I wonder if this could be an issue with the Scandinavian models? I see that you're located in Finland, and I am in Norway. I've searched both here and through Google, and haven't found any others saying they have experienced it.
Any solution to this?

Nope, didn't know GS2 had noise reduction. Where can you turn it off?
Hello hpe,
Indeed many people have this same problem, and should not be ignored since talking in the phone is the most important use of the phone. For me my volume is sooooooo low that it is nowhere near acceptable volume when increased to the max. I can't hear them, they cant hear me, its annoying.
here are three options might want to try:
A) Enter service mode by typing below code on your dialer :
*#*#197328640#*#*
click the following:
[5] AUDIO
[1] NB (VOICE CALL)
Choose Handset, headset, Speaker (which ever you want higher volume)
[1] VOLUME
[1] SRC Speech RX Volume
Change default values and higher the values any number of your choosing, here is an example:
[0]0_lvl : 68
[1]1_lvl : 72
[2]2_lvl : 76
[3]3_lvl : 80
[4]4_lvl : 84
[5]5_lvl : 88 Higher these values to until hear volume improvement.
Can also edit the values from:
[2]DST I2S1 TX Volume
[3]SRC I2S1 RX Volume: 100
[4]DST Speech TX Volume: 94
This is Samsung volume setting, worked for several people but sadly only worked 2 times for me and values keep resetting for me (doesn't mean for you, so give it a try) Also this is based on STOCK firmware.
B) the second thing you might to try is app called Volume+:
http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/volume-gingerbread/download
This app guarantees it higher the volume without the need of touching its default settings, BUT huge drawback it highers everything: Headset, speaker and Bluetooth EXCEPT HANDSET which is the most important :-(
(I also downloaded many volume increase apps, but Volume+ was the only one got the job done for everything but handset)
C) Lastly get GOOGLE VOICE app (create a GV account if you don't have one)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.googlevoice&feature=search_result
just by installing Google and logging on, every time you make a call, your calls get forwarded through Google voice and volume levels become acceptable in ALL HANDSET, HEADSET, SPEAKER, BLUETOOTH (just like phone should of have been) (this what i personally use fix my volume issues)
Hope one of these work for you.
try turning off the noise cancellation during a call, via the menu button i think.
FYI other threads posted say some people have this low mic issue as well. so youre not alone.

During a call on the call screen, press the menu button and 'turn noise reduction off'. Thats it.

Wow, thanks all! So many great answers. I'll try to disable Noise Reduction, and if that doesn't work I'll try all the great suggestions you gave Extreme184X.
Tell us what worked for you, your solution might someone else with this problem.
Some people have the Galaxy S2 with screen protector that completely protects and covers the entire phone (front, back, sides) resulting in low volume because all mics and speakers are covered.
I can't believe this is still a problem with Samsungs. My wife and I both had Tocco's (don't laugh) and sent them back for this very reason. Now we've purchased GS2, delivery date 02/06/11 and i'm reading about this reoccurring issue.
I turned of noise cancelling, and have had no complaints so far.

I tried to push the menu button during a call, but I can't see any option to turn of noise reduction. How do You guys do it?

Unfortunately it needs to be disabled for each call. Annoying.

[Q] No timer sound (UPDATE: it's something related to System sound)...please help

I use the countdown timer built in to the SGS2 stock rom quite a bit. It has always played the selected sound whenever I've used it, but today the sound stopped working when the timer reached 00h 00m 00s.
I can select the alert sound from the menu and it will play the test sound when selected, but when used on the actual timer it's silent no matter which sound I select.
I'm on Orange UK with stock rom kernel build XWKF3, baseband version XXKE7...only just flashed via the official Kies update in the past week.
Apart from that (and the Social Hub force close problem) everything else works fine.
Anyone got any ideas about how I can get the sound back on my timer?
UPDATE: After a bit more digging, the problem seems to be 'system sound'. If I go to Menu/Settings/Sound/Volume I get the 4 default sliders for Incoming Call, Media, System and Notification volumes. Adjusting the Call, Media or Notification volumes via their own sliders results in a preview of the volume. However, when adjusting the System volume I get no sound whatsoever.
Again, as far as I can tell, all other sounds (including Alarm) appear to work fine.
UPDATE 2: The problem seems to be solely related to the timer. After more testing, all other sounds appear to work...Keypad tones, Alarm, Music, Game sounds, Video sounds...everything execept the timer alert sound...it's driving me mad!
Any suggestions on how to fix?
Thanks again,
Rich
Anyone?

having the same problem; have you found a solution?
i'm rooted and have disabled camera sound as described here (method 1); but it seems to be unrelated..
I have the same problem too.. It is driving me crazy for searching this solution. Looks like not a lot of people have this problem.
I need the timer sound !! Grr...

Kn0cker or simonskling....
Did you ever find a solution? My timer is still silent even after a further firmware update the problem remains the same as my original post, so I'm still searching for a solution. But as you say Simon, it doesn't look like many people have this problem. Either that or they do have the same problem but just don't use the timer.
I'm tearing out what little hair I have!!
Just downloaded 'Volume Ace Free' from Android Market for reasons entirely unrelated to the timer sound problem I was still having. Decided to test a few 'sound' apps after playing about with Volume Ace...and guess what? My timer sound is working again...lol.
Don't ask me what setting I changed though (but I suspect it's something to do with Systems sounds).
Hope this helps anyone else who has been suffering with the same problem.

Any luck?
LE: I also installed "Volume Ace Free" and noticed that the Alarm volume was set to 0. After I changed there, the timer sound appeared. Crazy!!!!

[Q] Low in-call volume with wired headset

This problem has been talked about some time, but I'm not able to find a real solution:
I'm using CM9 with Siyah-kernel. When I use a wired headset, the in-call volume is extremly low. Even at max I cannot understand the other party when I'm outside.
Now, some solutions have been proposed:
* Use STweaks to boost headset volume. That works but also increases the music volume. If I boost it enough so that in-call volume is good, music volume gets hard to control.
* Use the service menu. On my phone I cannot access the audio menu. As I understand, I could flash a different modem (e.g. XXKI3). Can anyone tell me where to download it? All links I found were dead. And anyhow, as I understand these settings are reset on boot. So it's not really a permanent solution.
Is there anything else someone could think of?
I'd really appreciate any ideas.
Best regards
Ole

Sounds to quiet

I have done research and it appears that Samsung has it set up to ring softly and get louder. Which results in missed calls. Anyone have a way to disable this without keeping an app running all the time?
Also anyway to boost the volume as this phone is the most quiet phone i've ever had and it sucks missing notifications and ringtones. You can't really put a cover over it as it makes it a little bit more quiet and I"m already missing things due to the sound not being as loud as any other previous phone.
Anyone have any fixes? I've searched the net and many people seem to be having issues with it not being loud enough.
If you don't have a fix, but think it's not loud enough chime in so some devs can get it on it maybe?
I hate the volume on Ringtones on this phone too. There is an option in sound settings to make it ring louder in pocket but that's all I've found

There are a few apps on the Google Play store that let you boost sound.
Although I have not tried it - there are a few that seem to have good reviews and solves that problem, or at least makes it slightly more tolerable - hope this helps.
I checked all the ones in the app don't work on the new android OS. This really sucks. No way to boost volume at all it appears without a dev coming up with something. Unless someone else found something?
Assuming you are rooted, this makes everything louder: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293133
Great find. Thank you.
Agree on the weak volume
I need to root my phone apparently because this stock volume BLOWS! I cant say how many calls Ive missed due to not hearing it in my pocket.
If it's just the ascending ringtone (it's quiet for the first 3-4 seconds and ramps up), you can try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shumoapp.disableincreasingring. The first post said without apps.

[Q] S4 audio lowered.

I use my phone to connect to my cars bluetooth. I've had since the phone since July and it sounded really good up until about three days ago. For some reason the audio lowered and doesn't sound as crisp as it used to. I know it is not the car stereo because my other devices still play perfectly. I have to turn my radio up to the point where the music will sound distorted.
Example = s4 on bluetooth turned to 25 - sounds great
s4 on bluetooth now turned to 25 - can barely hear it.
Is there a setting or even an equalizer that I can use to maybe fix this issue? Also is there any setting in the phone ( running stock ) that I might've pressed that decreased my volume?
Look into a custom rom, I know Hyperdrive has a volume hack slight/loud which works for me. Hopefully someone has an easier way to accomplish this.
Unfortunately I can't root this phone because it was given to me for work purposes.
Sometimes I have this problem, idk how busy you are, but hangouts will sometimes lower volume for me to make a notification sound and forget to put it back, try making your phone give you a notification sound and see if puts it back
