[S-OFF] Got Root! - HTC EVO 3D

DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD UNTIL YOU READ THIS
Congrats and mad props to Agrabren and Team WIN for punching a hole through HTCs software and getting root! Agraben now has a thread for it so make sure you thank them for all of their hard work: [GUIDE] Fre3vo / Fre3dom Official Thread
The thread got way off track for awhile there but maybe now we can keep it close to being on topic. As long as it is somewhat related to the topic you won't hear me complain, however, this is Not the place to ask about Netflix, why your Battery doesn't last all week or how you can get out of paying a dollar a day for wireless tethering. For those of you just getting your phones, if you find that your bootloader is unlocked (read: S-OFF) please send me a PM. Also, if you're still unsure about the differences between S-OFF, and Root, and what it all means; you can check out the Android Dictionary or feel free to ask in the Q&A section. I know the dictionary there is somewhat lacking but it's still pretty good.
Now that root has been obtained we are able to focus on getting S-OFF and opening these things up for ROMs. HTC is using a new security scheme with these that hasn't made it easy so far, but as is with anything new it's going to have holes that are just waiting to be found. Using Flash_image to flash directly looks to be a dead end but there are still many different angles that are being worked on at the moment. Please jump in anytime if you have an idea that you think may help.
I have attached a few things to this bottom of this post and dragonfyre13's thread has a lot of good info that is being deposited there: Root: shaking something loose [WIP]. Odds are very good our current method of getting root won't last long so it never hurts to start looking for something new early.
If you find the file SMART_IO.CRD on your sd card please do not delete or format anything on it and let us know.
The read and writesecureflag commands show the following when you try to use them:
Code:
fastboot oem readsecureflag
... INFOsecure_flag: 3
OKAY
fastboot oem writesecureflag ?
... INFO shooter_init_sd, SD card already power on
INFOsdcc_init_memory_device done
INFO[FAT_ERROR] fat_open_file: can not find SMART_IO.CRD
INFO[JAVACARD_ERR] SMART_IO.CRD cann't find
INFOwritesecureflag: Permission denied, value 1
OKAY
Update 6/28: Many are wondering if the Incredible 2 being unlocked would help us and Shinzul posted a good explanation of how it relates to where we are:

Alpha Rev X has released a beta version of their Incredible2 S-OFF utility:

I can only imagine that the method used could quite possibly be adapted to the 3D. Someone needs to open these tools up in IDA and start reverse-engineering.

The incredible 2 shipped with Froyo on it, which means that there are plenty of available exploits that can be used to gain a root shell. As far as I understand, the inc2 guys didn't have a leaked eng bootloader, so once they had temp root, they had no way to unlock the bootloader without essentially hex editing the existing one and then coming up with a process to overwrite the existing one.
We have an eng bootloader for the 3VO, so all we really need to do is gain a root shell and then write the boot and recovery images and reboot - poof, s-off.
Props to the AlphaRev team for the inc2 work, but unfortunately, it doesn't help one bit for us.

Do you need "SMART_IO.CRD" for a further test?
I had read that the file was being found on the SD card included with the device. if possible, maybe someone with the Phone can up this file for further testing...

Have you asked our leaker friend if he still has the device?

I get mine today "before 3pm CST" according to UPS/Sprint... I work at 2, so if I get it before work, and the SD has this file, I will post it before I even boot the device lol.

If we don't get an unlocked bootloader, then this is where we might have to turn to an XTC clip (aka like a goldcard method). I'll reach out to the XTC dev. I know he just started a thread over in the Sensation section.

il have mine in about a hour or so. i will be able to test whatev

Got mine if anyone wants to take a peak

I would be more than willing to try it with mine, and I'm expecting it to be delivered to my job any minute now. However, I've never used this method and when it comes to ADB, I'm a novice.....at best.
Is there any way you can provide a quick guide as far as what the command prompts we are to type to get GingerBreak to go through? I'm sure it would be helpful to many of us.
Edit: Also, do you think I should do this before the out-of-the-box OTA update goes through? I know we are all hoping the update has the unencrypted keys, but for all we know, it may shut the door on an existing exploit and makes things harder. What do you think?
Thanks in advance!

It is if your lookin all over google Along with threads deep. I was trying to find just one file the 2.17 for folks since all the guides don't have a link to the latest RUU and many folks are stuck at the unlock code bin thing were it says your unlocked but your really not...
All other links are to older RUU nothing new some other sites have the latest RUU but there full of crap to click on till you get to downloading.
The PC86IMG.ZIP will not work cause you need the RUU. Also I wasn't raining on the guys thread just posting a guide workaround on the hboot1.5 since alot of folks are stuck......
Anyways have fun flashing when you get rooted. Never did claim they were my links either. I just post links to stuff. Like we all do..

[RUU] Android 4.0.3 - Build 1.12.651.2

I'm surprised no one has already posted this here on XDA. Here is the link to the shipped-roms upload of the leaked RUU labeled
Code:
RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.12.651.2_Radio_1.02.11.0423_2_NV_SPCS_2.28_003_release_257970_signed2.exe
which was determined to be for the EVO 4G LTE based on hints in the build.prop and other places.
You can get it HERE.
NOTE: This has NOT been tested on a device yet, considering it's not really out yet, so don't run this right away on you new phone on Friday before we investigate it more.

Well, I just added the su, Superuser.apk, and busybox binaries to the extracted rom and built a new boot.img. That doesn't have anything to do with rooting the device... however, these days "rooting" a device isn't very difficult.

Unfortunately, this RUU won't be the final RUU. The system dump I have is 1.13.651.1, and it does look pretty close to done. But I wouldn't be surprised if there is another update before launch.

Something of interest,
The 1.13.651.1 RUU contains (in the rom.zip file) hboot_1.13.0000_signedbyaa.nb0 .
While 1.12.651.2 contains hboot_1.12.0000_signedbyaa.nb0
OTOH, a pic posted earlier with an ENG bootloader had version 1.04.2000
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12623902/ANDROID/IMG_20120510_220841.jpg
So... Perhaps part of the process will be to downgrade first...

Those two RUUs are the only ones I've seen for the Jewel so far.
^^Good catch. I came across that in one of the evo lte threads, but didn't pay very close attention. I thought it was from one of the prerelease/demo phones. Disregard
yep, that's a shooter (evo 3d) as versions 1.04.2000 and 1.30.2000 are the two hboots that have been pictured on it
im guessing it shouldnt be that hard to root since bootloader can be unlocked thru HTC DEV

Yeah, I got the phone from a local Verizon employee the day it came out. It came in a white box. Pretty cool that it is S-Off. The plastic faceplate has a crack through it though, I think the quality control might have been skipped on these employee versions. I never dropped it, the crack just appeared.
Anyway back to Roms. I hope it is true that I can just flash a rooted rom. Anybody know for sure?
Is there a way to pull a copy something off of the phone to help with the ongoing s-off efforts?

what is your hboot?
is it an ENG hboot or is it the stock hboot_1.02.0000?
if ENG you could pull that it could be of use if/when s-off comes for this phone.
BUT it's really not a big deal as I already have a friend who does have the ENG hboot for this phone so he will be giving me it, just wondering if you have it as well, and if they would be the same.

It might block you from using fastboot commands without a patched hboot. However, I would sacrifice those to keep ***LOCKED*** status.

6) enjoy Sense 4.1 and please wait patiently for the S-OFF tool.
7) smile.
I'm confused. Those of us that are already unlocked via htc-dev, will we need to do this to get s-off? I am running viperLTE.

Yes. Look at this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1945852
if you are htc dev unlock and doing this, u need to lock ur bootloader to install it, then unlock again after, make sure u have ur unlock_token
Sorry but it makes no sense to me that people are recommending the need to relock and then install this update. It can already be installed by those that are unlocked by downloading the version that nitsuj17 posted in the dev forums. This gives you all of the "benefits" of the update without having to relock. Plus, nitsuj17 is already working on a new version of Viper with the latest update.
Is the idea to get the new bootloader? To what advantage would that be (obviously it is to people that are not unlocked)?

idk who you mean by people? It's me suggesting what to do to be prepared for the S-OFF tool. This goes for everyone, stock and rooted.
you need to run the RUU/or accept it as OTA on your phone if you want S-OFF.
not just running a ROM.
also it's in the very first line of the OP.. "I pulled the rom.zip from the new OTA(2.17.605.2) RUU that is needed for the root/ S-OFF exploit"
Thanks
Hey andybones I just wanted to say thanks! I am Aldo' son in law and kind of been behind the scenes. Now with all that is happend I just joined. So thanks for all you have done!

Ok, so I need to:
1. Re-lock the bootloader
2. Download the RUU
3. Follow the 7 steps at the beginning of this thread
4. Then I can unlock the bootloader again.
At this point I'll be ready for S-Off... correct?
The part I wasn't sure about was whether I had to re-lock first.
Thanks Andybones...

I think I was misunderstanding something so don't worry about it.
As for what I meant by people is that there are several here who have suggested it not just you.
wearing a hole in the carpet while waiting...
I wonder if it's just me who is anxious to gain S-OFF under the new OTA update. I suspect I know the answer.
:silly:
Andybones rocks!

need you ask!!!!!!!
haha this is why I LOVE this community!
you guys are awesome.
in the rezound forums, once I tested s-off (on my only personal device mind you, having to use a paper clip....) and once I got it, they were also making the tool for about 6 other phones, so before it got released ALL phones had to be tested, so it took a bit longer for it to come, and when I made like the splash thread, some people spammed me saying how I'm rubbing it in their faces, and that's completely not true. I mean, I must have rebooted my phone over 100 times with that paper clip, I also figured out for the team that the SD-card was the reason, so that saved a lot of time and hassle for them.
long story short, I sure as hell don't regret selling that brick of **** and buying this awesome phone with awesome people to share it with!
Since we are only waiting for a tool for just our phone (I think anyway) it shouldn't take nearly as long as that wait IMO, but again I don't know. But it is pretty cool that the exploit was found in a new update, usually they break the exploits not open them up lol.
big props to superdave for finding that otherwise this wouldn't of happened I don't think, or certainly not this fast anyway.
Lol! It's a great community of people here and just goes to show that when you buy an Android device, you don't just get an awesome device. You get an awesome community of helpful and fun people to share yout experiences with!

This is a great community! That is the main reason I got the Inc 4. Between you nitsuj17 and icedragon (the developers I am familiar with). I am not knocking other Devs. This is going to be one heck of a ride!!!!

What to do after JTAG S-OFF

I thought I would start a thread to help people that sent there DNA out to get JTAG s-off and now are trying to flash a custom Rom.
If anybody want to put there experience on here so people know the steps and the correct way to handle the bootloader.
I think it would be helpful. I am still waiting for mine to come back from mobiletechvideos so it would be helpful for me to.
Thanks to anyone who contributes.
I'm pretty sure this should be in general. Just sayin.

Yeah you're right. It's a good thread though. I'm thinking Q&A section would probably be good because of the other stuff in the same section.
It will get moved.

You've got to unlock and root it, then all the fun begins.
And please take the time to read through these forums, all your questions have been asked and answered. We don't like spoon-feeding people here when the answer is readily available.

s-off dna
The purpose of the forum is to get the right info I've seen conflicting points on whether or not you still need to unlock the bootloader after s-off.
My understanding was that once your s-off you don't need to unlock because it bypasses the bootloader security checks. I am probably wring but I was hoping to get a clarified answer with this forum what do think choochoo

You shouldn't have to all you really need to do is flash the ENG Hboot and flash a recovery and then flash a Rom most have root already and your good to go. If you wanna use the stock hboot and only want su permission then you do need to unlock hboot it to be able to flash a recovery and superuser or supersu.

Thank you for the clarification. That's what I thought but there are people are posting that u need to downgrade via ruu and then use the beups exploit to supercid and then htcdev unlock and I was calling bullswack on that. Lol thanks again

The eng hboot has more functions available so there is a better chance of messing up the phone. Most people stick with the stock hboot since that's good enough for most.

I agree with that only if your not familiar with using the ENG Hboot, if you are then it's the better choice.

Unless you actually run any of the additional commands included in ENG hboot you will be ok. Much ado about nothing.

Why would you try to so your device after you have s-offed it
Where do I find the non-eng hboot? I'm paranoid that if I ever need to s-on my phone I'll further I have eng h-boot and brick it so I kind of want to go back.

Just got my phone back from the JTAG service and this was the exact procedure. Flashed the ENG boot and then flashed recovery. Bootloader still says 'LOCKED' but allowed me to flash.
I've JTAGG'd 18 DNA devices so far on the OTA update (I do this on the downlow due to specific "developer" who can't understand how to get all phones to take the RIFF JTAG flash software.
Flash ENG Hboot if you want the options available to it, though not mandatory. Install a root program (SuperSU is my recommendation), then flash a recovery.
Immediately backup your current setup, then go for any ROM you see fit. Profit.
