HDMI Mirroring - HTC EVO 3D

I ordered the MHL adaptor from T-Mobile's website yesterday, so I should get it today (yeah, I paid the extra $6 for overnight shipping).
Does this phone support FULL mirroring (i.e., when plugged in to TV, TV screen mirrors whatever is on the phone's screen)? I used the full HDMI app on my Evo 4G, and it was great for watching shows from HBO GO on my TV.
Has anyone tried it yet? If not, is there a review out there somewhere that specifically demonstrates this feature?
I guess I'll know tonight when I get home from work!
Thanks,
Rob

I haven't seen it specifically on this phone, but I've seen the Qualcomm MSM8660 demos showing full mirroring. We should be capable of it, but I haven't tried it out yet.

I'm surprised nobody's tried it yet!

Can you use the normal micro HDMI or do you have to buy the adapter to use HDMI? Lol kinda confused how this works with the new port? Could anyone explain? Thanks

You need to buy an adaptor. Basically, it's a dongle that plugs into the USB (charger) on the E3D. The dongle/adaptor has a HDMI port on it, along with a USB port. You plug an HDMI cable into the HDMI port, and into the TV. You plug a charger into the USB port and into the wall.
So no, the HDMI cable from the EVO 4G (I have one too) won't work.
Does that help?

Thanks for clearing that up!!

Back to the issue at hand... does it do HDMI mirroring or not? I have this bad ass HDMI integration in my Prius that is preventing me from upgrading from the 4G until at least HDMI mirroring is confirmed.

According to this demo from CTIA it appears it can, but this is unfinished testing hardware/firmware so it's still not a confirmation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ynmqtopi9g
This doesn't exactly give you an answer with the level of certainty you are looking for but it's a good sign. We should see some end users with feedback on HDMI features on the production phone streaming in any time now that hopefully confirms that it can do this across any application without problems or limitations.

hey rtmeikle . I also got the mhl from tmobile. I hooked it up last night to sadly find out that hdmi mirroring is not supported at all. It was all a big hype it appears. Were you able to get it working? I'm hoping that you were so maybe its just my device....if not, then this phone is going back.

Yep, I got mine yesterday and tested it. It works fine.
You have to have the adaptor plugged in to the phone, a charger plugged to the adaptor, and the HDMI cable running from the phone to the TV.
I got full HDMI mirroring which automatically switched to landscape when I tested Netflix and HBO Go.
Rob

interesting. thanks for the quick respond. When i connect it to my hd tv all i get on the phone is a message that says *HDMI play a video or slideshow to display via hdmi* on the notifications bar. When I click that, nothing happens...

Strange. The image of my home screen just popped up on my TV; I didn't have to do anything.
I tested it on the TV in my bedroom, a 3-yr-old Samsung 42" Plasma, nothing fancy.
Maybe tonight I'll test it on my other two TVs and see if it works on all of them.

did you allow the latest OTA upgrade or did you cancel it? I allowed it as soon as I turned the phone on. I also tried it on my 58 samsung plasma hdtv. Its not that old but also not that new.
I'm going to try it tonight on my smaller 32 inch lcd hd tv to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't though.
Not like it matters since all MHL cables are the same but here is the MHL adapter I'm using: http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/AddOns...4ec1-a08e-e133fa772d53&inCart=True&catCode=23

Yep, I've accepted the OTAs. And I'm using the exact same adaptor. Did you plug power into the adaptor too? I didnt' try without plugging it in, but I've heard that it needs to be plugged in to work.

Ok, i finaly got it to work. It wasn't a problem with the phone but a problem with the tv. I had to change some resolution settings on the tv and presto! Hdmi mirroring on its full glory
Now, do you know if I can pair up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Thats next for me.
Thanks for all the help.

This is what I am currently doing. I have hooked up the following.
Mouse: Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Keyboard: Logitech MX5500 Keyboard
The keyboard works great. I can type in the applications and setup my keys in the emulators just fine (snesoid etc)
Mouse functionality though is different then you may expect. You don't get a mouse cursor, it just "highlights" selections then you "left click" to go forward. According to my research the right mouse button is supposed to "go back" but is not working for me.
I put up a thread asking others for help with it, so if I find an answer I will let you know.

Updating you on what I found out about the mouse.
"Well it looks like the fancy mouse support with a cursor and button functionality was something that was included in CyanogenMod 6.X then removed on CyanogenMod 7.
They then added a patch for version 7. But now apparently it is being included in his latest CyanogenMod.
Regardless, it appears you need root access "

the adapter has a USB plug that you use to hook up to a charger, and will charge your phone. Newer TVs are coming that will support charging over HDMI via the MHL adapter, there may be some out but I think will be a standard in 2012 TVs.

the HTC one looks lke it includes a HDMI cable, too, but you can see the usb port on each adapter for charging.

[Q] G Tablet TV Out with No Dock?

Has anyone tried to get a TV out going on the G-Tablet without having purchased the dock? We have a standard and mini-usb available, maybe it can be done?
electroniccrap.com has a dock connector to hdmi cable.
You can also get a cable from electronic crap which plugs in the proprietary plug and outputs HDMI. Just got mine and works like a charm.

I've tried connecting mine through both USB ports and it's a no go. When I put my TV into USB mode, it says "no device connected" My Digital cameras and video camera work fine, but not the G-Tab.

hdmi out
can you post a link or name that cable so we can find it on electronic crap? That would be great-
Nevermind- found it!....LinkIt $29
Since it works like a charm I'm assuming audio works. Do you need to change any type of settings on the g-tab for the video out to work? Or do you pretty much just plug it in and you're good to go?

MHL with HDMI and Power?

I've searched around the Forums for a bit and I cant seem to find an answer - so I thought I would just ask.
I found an MHL Adapter that does HDMI and Power, but I can only seem to f t for sale in EU : http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/bizlink-mhl-to-hdmi-adapter-black-p29839.htm
Has anyone seem a cable like this for sale either in the US or somewhere that will ship worldwide?
During lunch I watch movies/etc with my wife on an LCD in my dash, so I need the HDMI and Power to keep the phone going.
Thanks!
I thought all MHL adapters did HDMI and power. I thought that was the point of it over two separate ports. I might be wrong, though.

Yes, MHL standards dictate they do both.
MHL will ONLY charge if your TV is MHL compatible... Which it isn't. MHL ready TV's don't exist yet (AFAIK) MHL adapters are what he linked in the first post, which have a standard HDMI out with a Micro USB in, to charge the phone. That's what you need until you get a MHL TV.
I think the link the OP posted shows a dongle that plugs into the EVO 3D's port, and has two plugs, one HDMI, that would go to the tv, and a second plug to plug in a charger.
I really hope this phone supports full mirroring. I can't wait to get this adapter so I can test it out, hopefully before the 30 day period in case it doesn't work.
If anyone finds one for sale, let us know!
Thanks!

[Q] Micro USB to HDMI

Does anybody have any info on when this cable will be available? I was also wondering if anyone knows if I can play the 3D Movie from my phone on my 3D T.V. with this cable.
I don't have a 3D tv, so I can't test the 3D aspect of the cable, but I have tested the HDMI mirroring.
I ordered the MHL adaptor from T-Mobile's website. Look under the "data" accessories for the Sensation.
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Addons/Accessories/Default.aspx
It was $19 plus shipping. I tried a few local T-Mo stores, but nobody had it.
Anyway, I tested it last night. You need to have a charger, a normal HDMI cable, and the adaptor. The adaptor plugs into your phone's USB port, and then you need to plug the adaptor into your phone's charger and into the HDMI cable running to the TV.
You'll get full HDMI mirroring, meaning whatever is on your phone's display is on the TV. I only tested for a few minutes, but when I first attached it, there was a portrait view of my phone's screen up on the TV. I then tested both Netflix and HBO Go, which both flipped the image to landscape, filling the TV screen. Quality was pretty good with Netflix, and only adequate with HBO Go.
Hope that helps!
Rob

curoius, do most newer tv's have MHL built in? or probably not?
all i can find when i type my tv's model number and MHL into google is.. my tv with some hockey info (NHL) hehe..
google is too smart for its own good sometimes.
Based upon what I've seen, you need a MHL adapter for the phone. Its just a little box that plugs into USB, and had a USB port on it for power input and an HDMI port. There's cheap out there, like this one.
I have an MHL adapter and it does work but you need to plug the power into the thing in order for it to do anything. My receiver has usb and hdmi on the front so that works for me. It would be nice to have 1 cable, but this works.
Unfortunately I believe that's the case with any MHL device. There's a chip inside that box that transcribes the MHL signal (coming over the 5 pin USB connector) to a full HDMI signal, and it requires power. It's not all that bad though, as you would probably want to be charging your phone while playing a video anyways.
Exactly it is nice it does have power. Unlike the ipad to vga dongle lol.
Eventually most of the high end TVs will have the MHL. You will still need the adapter but you will not need to power it. The TV will not only power your phone but charge it.
I pocketed the HDMI MHL adapter from my infuse when I returned it under the 30 day ATT trial... The screen was pixelated in my infuse in the top left hand corner so they were more concerned with my device being defective than me just not liking it and only asked me if the charger was in the box.

[Q] 11 Pin MHL + USB OTG

Hey there, i have tried gathering information about this subject and it seems all threads always lead to this announcement:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
Short: Samsung have changed to an 11 Pin-out to enable USB OTG and MHL Hdmi out at the same time. I purchased an original HDTV Adapter (EPL-3FHUBEGSTD) which as far as i can reliably count indeed has about 11 connectors inside the USB connector that goes into the phone.
Now, i can get HDMI out just fine, but ONLY when i also connect the MHL adapter to a power source (a PC USB Port will do fine), however i have also read, that the phone is able to power the MHL adapter itself but obviously would not be charged then (no surprises there). This does not work however.
Further, connecting a USB OTG cable to the micro usb port on the MHL adapter does nothing. No notification and no devices connecting. No power either, since the LED on my USB Hub does not light up as it should. Connecting any devices to the hub does nothing to change that situation. If i leave out the MHL adapter and connect the USB OTG cable directly to the phone, everything works perfectly. I have tried this with 2 different OTG cables so they are not the problem.
This is an original genuine HDTV Adapter for our phones, which according to that post should be working fine with USB OTG.
AFAIK, this topic --does-- come up more frequently now as i can find a few more discussions about it, albeit none really helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link#11-pin_MHL-USB_Connector
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811435
That wiki entry is the most interesting link as it definitely states that using MHL and USB OTG simultaneously is possible and is also the reason why the 5 pin layout was changed to an 11 Pin layout.
Looking forward to reading your replies!
the ability to use MHL and OTG simultaneously would give the S3 so much more purpose. It is powerful enough to replace a desktop computer used only for light stuff like browsing and watching videos, and even simple gaming. If samsung made a dock like the one for the motorola atrix I'm convinced they will broaden their target group. The atrix got everything right with this but is inferior hardware wise. I love the idea of a one device for everything concept. Unfortunately it doesn't rhyme very well with the growth society.
Love the MHL and the OTG is even better only after I got the correct cables as the cables changed on S3 to the S2 version, unlimited space for watching films on my phone is now awesome and even better connecting it to to the TV just need a good dock,
is there perhaps any expert advise on this? According to multiple sources it should work but really doesnt. Did i buy the wrong mhl adapter?
I think they will only both work together when being used with an MHL enabled tv. That way the power comes from the tv and the usb on the adapter can be used for the usb-otg cable.

Ah ok sorry! Afaik you should be able to choose your headphones as primary audio source in the bluetooth settings. I know I can choose what I want to be output to my bluetooth headset, but I don't own an MHL adapter so I don't know about that. Someone with one should be able to try it, and if they don't own a bluetooth headset/pair of headphones they could try with wired ones and see what happens.

I have recently received an MHL connector (5 pin type) and the samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter for it. I can confirm that if I plug my OTG cable into it, and then into my powered USB hub, I can get the MHL to work just fine, both video and audio. The OTG cable powers it just fine, but does NOT allow me to use other devices attached to the USB hub.
I am still researching. I suspect you need to bring all 11 pins off the phone with a splitter of some sort, or possibly wire data lines through the MHL. Probably not with the 5 pin MHL connector and 11 to 5 pin adapter, but with the full 11 pin MHL adapter. I am not up to that level of hardware hacking. I suspect whoever does it first can sell a BUNCH of them!
Oh, and I have a Moto Lapdock for my Raspberry Pi, and would love to hook my S3 to it too!
