SoD gone in 2.3.4? - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Haven't had a single SoD event so far on XXKPH going on 24 hours with wifi left switched on the entire time. On froyo I would have had at least a handful.
Keeping my fingers crossed...

Until now, i've never heard that some one has experienced any SOD on KPH.

there a lot people get SOD on 2.3.4 kph. including my self. just got SOD when i reply this *sigh*

I had some with my S5830B, an American model. I also had screen flashing.

I have had wifi on for almost a week and no SOD, its been 3weeks since i flashed and i am quite pleased with it

I had no SoD's since i've switched to Gingerbread, really strange .

I also have no SoD since XXKPH

I think I am also in the lucky list.
Have flashed KPH 5-6 times without even a single SoD.

Thats because you guys have the european model or the global model. The models that are having issues are the american S5830L and B.
There's no american fw out yet.

Got at least 4-5 times SoD when I was trying to connect to a access point at a café. That was was after 20ish hour after flashing it.

never had SOD...ive been using KPH for about a month now...
i have been using wifi,msg,games...

Just flashed CODEROM V2X-2B. Every time I turn on the wifi I get a Sod.

A lot has been said about SoD on the other topic.
Long story short:
SoD has to do with the wifi. If you don't let your wifi turned on all the time, you won't get it. It accours mainly when the phone is in sleep mode and you left a wifi covered area, or something like that.
Until now, two main ways of not having SoD (or trying to):
1 - Don't let wifi on when locking the phone. You won't have any SoDs.
2 - If you want to let the wifi on to sync and stuff, do this:
2.1 - Download Y5 Battery Saver from Market, this will turn off your wireless everytime you get out of range of a known access point.
2.2 - Download Load Monitor from Market, open it up and select preferences, under preferences, check the following boxes:
*Add notification
*Only notify high load
*Auto start
*Wake lock
*Only screen on
Thanks to drewmayte on this post.
The second tip (Y5 + Load Monitor) won't eliminate the SoDs completely, but it will reduce them drastically.
It's been proved that SoD isn't gone in 2.3.4. So, I don't think this topic should continue. There's this other topic with more information if you guys want to talk about the SoD and wifi issue.

Hey!
I dont hase the SOD even in STOCK FROYO. Now I have Code.Rom and WIFI is mostly on(even in screen OFF) and I havnt STILL NO SOD.
CHEERS!
KPH decreased the frequency of SOD but did not solve the problem. It happens only rarely to me now and is not a huge inconvenience. I have faith this will be worked out eventually...
I used KPH couple of weeks withouth any problems. I went on vacation in Turkey and started to expirience SODs few times per day. As I said, only WIFI of or third parity app can solve problem until now.
Thanks for your replys

Hi
I had this problem to, but only on Froyo. Since i flashed to Gingerbread 2.3.4 kph, rooted and installed setcpu my problem was gone. Don' t no what the exact solution is, but i am happy this way.

I did not have a single SoD incident in 3 weeks running with stock XXKPH rooted only.
For some reason though after converting to ext4 (no other real changes) I've gotten a few. Don't know coincidence or not.

Samsung India , seemingly so, does not want to believe me, or that this issue even exists!
I've never gotten sod, not in any roms.
Hey!
Like I sayed in THIS thread, SOD often cased by WIFI.
CHEERS!
i ve never had sod :-/
yeah its true..
it was caused by wifi..wether u are on wifi or u are sharing wifi through wifi tethering and then ur phone moves to unlock screen(screen time out which is a dark screen) then u try to used it again(like unlocking it again) concluding to SOD(in which fone restarts)..
if you want no SOD while doing some wifi related things..
put ur display setting>screen time out>>set it to 30mins..
so that ur phone will be always open..
what i mean is to prevent ur fone to unlock(screen time out) then phone will be no longer experience the SOD..
that was my experience..
but unfortunately..
the battery would drain faster..because ur phone is always opened..
i wonder why.. but i NEVER experienced SOD since i bought my ace.
I experienced this using Bluetooth transfer, went to sleep, and I had to remove the battery before I could turn it on.

[Q] SOD on galaxy ace GT-S5830

Hey guys,
Just want to ask have anyone ever experience Sleep of Death(SOD) on your Ace?
SOD is that the phone goes into deep sleep or u can say it shuts down automatically when your screen is off for about 10 minutes...sometimes you must remount your battery only it will start up...its kinda annoying because you have to reboot 4 or 5 times a day!!!
I flashed my friend's stock rom from 2.3.4 xxkpn - 2.3.4 xxkph and rooted, deodexed, and have CodeRom v2x-2b flashed.
Everything goes nice and smooth...but the next day it goes SOD even so, i reflashed everything for 3 times but still things don't get solved.
But funny thing is i flashed my Ace with specification above everything is working superbly fine since the 1st day till now, but my friend's Ace goes SOD.
If there is anyone have experience on solving SOD don't mind sharing it??
because tried methods such as turning off wifi while screen is off and other methods posted on the internet but still won't work...thanks
yes, it's a common problem with SGA. for some people it happens everyday, for others it happens once a weak. you never know.
there are custom roms that dnt have this problem. right now i'm using GingerReal-2.0. it's very stable and fast.
oh...will try that ROM someday...but i'm still satisfied with my CodeRom
thanks bro.
SOD problem on SGA solved!!!
The cause of the 'SOD' is all because of the wifi when there is no connectivity or the phone is unable to connect. This has been tested for several times.
Just make sure to turn off the wifi when you are not in use and the 'SOD' problem will be solved.
The same for me
I'm also experiencing SODs with this smartphone. The Wi-Fi trick seems to help, but it is really unfriendly to the user. So, still waiting for a real fix.
There 2 other big threads wholly devoted to the problem:

Atrix random reboots and screen not turning back on

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me....I'm getting kind of desperate here! Basically my Atrix keeps randomly rebooting or getting stuck with the screen off (requiring a batter pull) . This happens about 10-20 times a day (my Atrix is far too unreliable right now to use as a daily). This seems to ONLY happen when on network (ie 2g/3g/hspa) and doesn't seem to happen on wifi. I can leave it on all night and day at home on wifi happily with no trouble but as soon as I go to work and leave it on network, the trouble starts. Its weird cause if the phone is doing something with the screen off (playing and streaming music over Bluetooth for example) it won't have any problems. Its only once I leave it at rest on the network that it turns into the most unreliable handset ever.
At first I thought it may be the neutrino rom I was running but I've since been using jokersax's amazing ics builds and the same problem persists. I did a full clean (format /data & /system plus cache and factory wipe ) and loaded on the latest beta build this morning, left it clean with zero apps except google (and xda!) and within an hour of getting to work the problem came back.
I am fully boot loader and network unlocked.
Please, if anyone has any idea I would be really grateful. I am tearing my hair out!

It is happening with me too, but, I dont realize it on happen on mobile data connection
Since i flashed beta 0.1.0 2d of Jokersax's ICS and come out of home

Why not try a more stable ROM first and see if you get reboots. You do realize some phones just cannot handle unstable roms like the cm9 builds even though they are great for some ppl it just doesn't workout also maybe you are using an oc kernel that your phone cannot handle.I would check both things first.
Try some a bit more stable.
cm7 ba2ft
wetdream
darkside
gingermod
If you get the same with those then maybe fastboot wipe and stuff like that so you can clear everything out
EDIT: flash a radio too

Hey,
Thanks, I'm going to try Gingerblur tonight... I had ruled that out as I have used darkside/gingerblur before and apart from the occasional reboot they were OK. The reboot was OK really, I know its a known issue with this model even with unrooted handsets, as long as its occasional and clean boots back to system again it doesn't really matter as I don't pin lock my sim (currently my problems are either a reboot every three minutes as soon as I switch the screen off... or, more commonly, the dead screen, needing that battery pull) .
I *suspect* that it may be the radio, but really need some solid advice on this because a couple of years ago I completely bricked my G1 by flashing the wrong radio and vowed never to touch radios again if I didn't have to....I am naturally very hesitant about radio flashing from that episode. Can anyone give me some decent advice on which radios i should be looking at for an unlocked ( but formerly Orange UK) Atrix? One very nervous owner here!
The other weird thing is that is perfectly fine when on a power source.

I have the same problem with my Atrix running cm7 ba2ft. Sometimes it does not respond when you try to unlock, and I need to take out the battery to turn it on again. I bought the phone couple of weeks ago.
another thing to look at would be the battery my friend had similar problems with his nexus and tryed Roms and radios I bought him a new battery as a joke and the joke ended up on me cause he hasn't had the problem since let me know if this helped you aswell

Same problem here. Very aggravating.
I am having the same problem. And I am 100% stock with no mods. I just installed OTA 2.3.6 so I am waiting to see if that helped.
Yeah, I'm really worried this is a hardware problem - I've been quiet these past couple of days testing the brand new GB radio and when that still had errors i then also tried the European one - the problem still persists. I have now downloaded every Atrix radio under the sun now so may try a few more...
This is quite frustrating as a) I really want to enjoy ICS as it really is a step up from previous versions of Android and b) I no longer have the option of selling this in its current state.
I'm also going to try a new battery as WikidClown suggested above, can't harm....I can pick up one on Amazon for less than a tenner.
One thing is for sure, I don't think I will be buying Moto hardware again!

i baught my atrix used. everything was stock. still had multiple reboots and battery pulls daily. on cm9 they seem to happen less. and the battery pull only happened once. but i know the issue must still be there. might try my wifes battery. her atrix has rebooted maybe 5 times ever. 3 since this last official update (she is still lock stock and 2 smoking barrels)
OK, trying a new battery is my last hope...I did a fastboot wipe this morning and for an hour and a half it was all going so well...but then the reboot happened.
I'm getting a bit fed up with this pos hardware...I can't even sell this thing in this state.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Anyone have any other experiences? I have confirmed that it isn't the battery...I bought a new batter and within 45 minutes it has rebooted once and done the screen off thing where it needs a battery pull. Complete crap.
One thing to note is that it does seem to get very warm on the back, although the internals ( behind the battery) don't seem so bad. Is there any way to keep the temp down aside from underclocking? All my roms have always been under clocked so I know that doesn't make any difference.
The other thing I might try is to use something like Noled so the phone isn't completely idle. Might drain the battery a bit unnecessarily though....why couldn't Moto have put in an amoled screen?
Anyway, will report back once I've tried it.

I used to get tons of random reboots and then I was told to get the app called "Wake My Android Pro". Settings -> Test Activity -> Auto Startup, and Stop Activity checked. Weird settings, I know, technically with stop activity checked it doesn't do anything, but ever since then I don't experience random reboots. This was a few months ago when I was on just CM7. I've always installed this app when I get a new rom and I've tried Neutrino, Darkside, Alien, Aura, CM7, Wet Dream, and currently on joker's CM9 beta 1 build and RARELY experience random reboots. It went from once an hour to once a month now. I'm also on the .36p radio if that helps.

Cheers, have downloaded and will report back. [Q] Maybe a potential fix for SOD(sleep of death)?!?!

Hi Guys,
Im no Genius when it comes to android, but I have done my fair share of programming before, but my SOD are killing me and a last resort is a warranty exchange as I cannot be without a phone.
So far I have been getting SOD about 5 times a day if not more, and I am one for tinkering with gadgets until i break or crash it, fix it and doing it all over again.
But anyway back on topic
I have noticed this in the build.prop
" persist.ril.mux.sleep=2 "
And so I wondered if this is causing my SOD, does anyone have any ideas regarding its uses?
Findings (as of 2155)
In my testing thus far I have changed it to "persist.ril.mux.sleep=1" using phone leaving it for an hour doing it over just for fun, And I have been SOD for 5 hours straight and haven't had any SOD or adverse battery drain
I mean this may not be the cause of the SOD for me, or anybody but I am up for trying just about anything
What is SOD?
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G using Tapatalk on AT&T, the company that disappoints me so much that I have to use my tapatalk signature to tell everyone
Sorry, Sleep Of Death
I have SOD here too. To me it's only happens when I turned off a data connection (3G or wifi).
I use LoadMonitor app as a workaround for a while, with success.
At now I'm using Neutrino 2.5 CM7 ROM with success too. I think it's more a blur rom problem than cm7 one.
Let us know about your progress.
So if you disable load manager you would get SOD?
I am making a script to update a few things so far no SOD for me, after a few tweaks
What settings are you using on load manager ?
Any info you can give me will help in me tracking down some of the errors and temporary fixes people are using to avoid the dreaded issue
Oh, THAT's what that was!
I forgot to turn the wifi back on a few nights ago when I said "Hey, let's watch some movies on netflix with my super-duper mirroring-abled phone!" So an hour into it, LBE Privacy warns me I'm about to max out my data, and I go turn the damn wifi back on but turned OFF the 3G.
Then last night I go to wake up my phone and the screen is "black but on", & took a couple of tries to wake it. I'm on Nottachtrix.

I'm a bit confused here. I don't know what "load manager" is.
What a sad is I used LoadMonitor app (from market) as a workaround.
LoadMonitor just monitor taks that are running in your device. But it have an option that claims to prevent device deep sleep. So, when I checked this option my device don't get SOD.
It's a workaround, as I sad, and I don't know how LoadMonitor do that.
What is load manager?
Thanks

I tried some roms and the only one I hadn't random reboots was jokersax11 alpha7 (ICI), now I'm on beta 0.2.0 and had reboots.
I'm having the same problem. I've tried 3 different ROMs. I used Nottachtrix, following the directions to the letter with reboots and hard locks. Recently I flashed back to 4.5.91 (w/pudding) and I was having the same issues. I noticed that on the hard locks, my phone appeared to be warm, so I used SetCPU at 216MHz and still had hard locks and random reboots. I've not set the lowest setting at 301 and so far I haven't had any reboots, but its only been about 5 hours. But I was having them at least once every few hours.
BTW - I also noticed that I only had the freezes and hard locks when the phone was running on the battery. I rarely had problems when the phone was on the dock or USB charger, however, I did have reboots when it was on the wall charger.
Another program you can try is call 'Wake Lock' available from the marketplace. I haven't used it yet, I'm still experimenting with load monitor.
Wake lock has a few different options and has some really good review.
I confirmed that Neutrino 2.5 CM7 Rom works great without reboots.

Atrix SOD & Random reboots related to Wifi?
Does anyone know if the Atrix SOD & Random reboots are related to WiFi. I've had my wifi off all day and I've had no crashes.
I'm going to run it for a few more days without Wifi and see what happens.
I don't know about other guys, but wifi and 3G was the cause of my Atrix SOD and reboot problems.
Solved it using Neutrino Rom CM7 based.
See you!
Still working on my SOD issue, but recently, I disabled most power options, turned off wifi, rebooted and I've been running for 2 days with no crashes. After day 3, I'm going to turn wifi back on reboot and see what happens.
Update 1
After 3 days with wifi disabled, I've had no crashes, no freezes or random reboots. I'm going to enable wifi again and see what happens.
Update 2
After turning enabling my wifi and using it briefly then turning it back off, I had a random reboot later that evening.
The more I used my wifi, the more frequent my crashes became.
Interesting side note
I can enable all my radios when plugged into the desktop charger and I won't experience any crashes, however, if plugged into to the AC charger, I've had reboots and freezes.

[Q] Sleep of death common on S2s?

I have two galaxy s2s. one is i9100 and the other one is i777 on at&t.
SoD happened once on each phone. The i777 was running stock gingerbread and the i9100 was running resurrection remix 1.9.1 with the siyan kernal I believe.
The screen just wouldn't turn on so I just pulled the battery out (is it safe for the phone?)
This doesn't happen often, well just once each on each phone as stated before, but it does bug me as it makes me think there's something wrong with my phones, and pulling the battery out doesn't seem like it's good for the phone.
I searched around the forum a bit and saw other people are having this issue as well. And not just the galaxy s2, but other phones too.
only sleep of death in almost 10 months of use is when i tried xwlp9.
so no its not common
It's fairly common yes, a lot of people running non-stock ROMs get this. I had this ~25 times on numerous Resurrection Remix ROMs, but since v1.9 I haven't had this issue fortunately. If it's causing you a big problem, try fixing permissions from CWM recovery, that seemed to make a big difference when I was having the problem.
SOD usually occurs when the kernel UV the CPU or GPU a little to much. Not every device is the same and not handle same kernels, UV values etc
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium HD app
From the sound of it, it seems to be a software problem.
I got it on the i777 which wasn't running a custom rom. But I think it could be caused by that battery management app that I installed.
anyway, my main concern is that if there's anything wrong physically with the hardware. ( having the SoD caused by software problem is much easier to swallow as to it being caused by hardware problem, as I can just reflash the kernal, roms, factory reset, etc. )
and did removing the battery while in SoD mode damage the phone?
It's normally a firmware issue, or a conflict between an app & the firmware. You'd find it's pretty rare for an 'untouched' (I.E not modded) phone running stock firmware to have SOD's. And obviously if you're flashing custom firmware that's constantly evolving/changing, then sometimes you're going to get SOD's, tho with most well crafted firmware these are fairly rare.
I reckon I've probably had <10 in the 8 mths I've had my phone & I've been running non-stock firmware the whole time save for the week I got my phone, which is nothing when stacked up against all the mucking around I've with my phone.
Edit to add - One way you can test to see if SOD's you're having are possibly hardware related is to do a completely clean install of stock firmware & see if they still happen. If they don't, then it's obviously whatever firmware you were running. If they do, then it might be hardware-related. Re: your question about pulling the battery after a SOD, normally this shouldn't cause you any problems (it's sometimes the only way you can successfully reboot the phone).
The only known SOD issues on I9100 are the old 2.3.3 (don't remember which one) and the XWLP9 kernel.
Custom roms... well. No need to elaborate I guess.
Most of them have undervolted settings as default.

Im pretty sure i rooted my phone on the we with LP9 kernel. Since Sunday, I've had about 10 sods and never had one before... no doubt here as to what's causing it. I plan to change the kernel on the we and hopefully no more sod.

Or just flash the newer build. No SOD there.

anyway, my main concern is that if there's anything wrong physically with the hardware. ( having the SoD caused by software problem is much easier to swallow as to it being caused by hardware problem, as I can just reflash the kernal, roms, factory reset, etc. )
and did removing the battery while in SoD mode damage the phone?

How about this?
I answered your question. Read the edit I made to my post.

Thank you for the answer.
Since it's kinda hard to recreate the SOD. I'll reflash the rom and kernal and do a wipe and see if the SOD still happen

Victorator, forgive my ignorance, but are you saying i should just flash the latest build, XWLPD, onto my fone rather than re-rooting it using a different kernel (i.e. CF-Root-SGS2_DX_SIN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip) in order to stop the SOD?
Never faced such issues ever.
Sleep of death
Hi all, the SLEEP OF DEATH on android phones has even become worse; somebody said this issue is resolved in ICS 4.0.3; thats not true. As of now; i have a galaxy S2 i900, 1 month and 2 weeks old, running ICS 4.0.4 and I have been experiencing this problem lately and took back my phone for repairs last week, got back the phone yesterday and this morning the sleep of death happened 3 times in 1 hour. I took the phone for repairs again later this evening and i made it clear to them that problem still hangs around and i told them that if it comes back with the same problem, they got to give me a new one because it happens on some devices only and im dead serious because SAMSUNG knows about this issue very well and they do nothing. NOW CHECK THIS OUT: the new SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 features this disease too; i was in the queue with two S3 clients reporting this problem. Android is really bad at times; im moving to APPLE
Will keep you Updated

Hi,
I'm also trying to solve this problem, since weeks.
My observations:
SOD happens most on higher battery status (e.g. more SOD's at 80% battery then at 20%
The Phone gets hot after SOD and also before the SOD comes.
While loading the Phone SOD's happen more often
The battery status drains rapidly while SOD (cause of the resulting heat)
My SOD's are independent of kernel, rom, firmware or what ever.
I think it's a hardware problem, but I've no warranty and what to solve the problem without changing the mainboard. It couldn't be a really defective of an important part, cause the phone works apart of this SOD-problem.
Maybe we could find out together howto solve these anoying sod's
Hey. Im trying to solve the SOD problem myself cause its been happening every day and its really annyoing since the phone isnt even a month old.
I got the newest cyanogen mod running.
The phones model is GT-i9100
Android is 4,2,1
I still have warranty on it, do you think I should go back to stock, go exchange my phone where I got it and see if the new one has SOD too or should I just try fixing it first.
Also apps I use constantly : go launcher and dragonvale
I have a 8 gb micro SD inside as well, dunno if that could cause this.
