Unlock Aria - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to get the unlock code from AT$T ever since I got this phone. finally, the code is now available to customers for free and I got my yesterday. just in time for my trip overseas later this month. now my little aria is perfect.
so call at$t and get your aria unlocked

Do you need a foreign sim for it to unlock, or can you simply boot with no sim inserted?

you will need a sim card. all you have to do is:
1. power down
2. remove your AT$T sim
3. insert any sim, active or inactive (in my case I used my china mobile sim)
4. boot back up
5. it will ask you for the unlock code
6. type in code
7. done. your aria is free and unlocked
I tested it by using my friends t-mobiles sim and it worked fine

What exactly did you do to get the unlock code? I just called them and they said that an unlock code is not available for this phone
Also, are you out of contract or still in contract? when i called again, they said that the phone is still in contract, so they can't provide an unlock code.

Do you think they will provide this for me if I bought the phone used?
I can use a friend's AT&T sim card but does it registers on his account or something? clarifications will be greatly appreciated.

boxcar8028,
wondering who you called/number. I too called yesterday (before reading this) even talked toa supervisor in the US (not India call center which is worthless) and they told me ATT doesn't provide unlocking code for the Aria ever (!), and would be 9 months from purchase for my other HTC phone (Inspire 4G) - both are in contract.
Sight, as I switched to ATT to get a world phone, and I'm traveling to europe in a week. Not looking foreward to paying >$25/phone on soem untrusted site...

not sure why AT$T didn't give you the code, but keep trying. it took me 4 try's in the past 7 months and each time they would tell me the same thing "code is not available for this phone" until last week. but maybe its because I have been with ATT for over 10 years, and yes my aria has a 2 year contract (17 months to go) and if they ask you why you want it unlocked, just tell them for use traveling overseas. keep trying, good luck.

not sure about a used aria, but AT$T will ask for the IMEI number to track the hardware. be careful AT$T may try to get you into a two year contract.

I just called 1-800-331-0500
I have been trying for over 7 months. each time I ask AT$T would always say check back in 2 months. not sure if the more you ask the more likely you'll get the code or not.
I thought AT$T would just make the code open to all now since the aria is an older model

We can make this happen if everyone will ask for this in AT&T forums. If HTC listened with the rom locking, I'm sure we can make AT&T listen as well.

Thanks to drumist, here are the official AT$T unlock rules:

as we can see even though the phone is sold exclusively by AT&T you still got the code. So the guidelines don't represent the situation here.

Unlock Codes
I'm going to try to get my unlock code. If they tell me they can't do it, I'm going to remind them that unlocking my phone is my right and the DCMA was modified by the custodian of the Library of Congress. If they refuse, I'm going to demand that they purchase my phone. Either way, if I don't get the code, I'm going to start filing complaints with the FCC. I don't believe they have a choice in the unlocking debate.
Cell phone providers, software providers, etc, enjoy benefits and protections that no one would tolerate for any other device. If you purchased a car that would only run on gas from one station, you would burn the dealership to the ground. But cell phone companies do it, because many people don't exercise their rights.

yeah, I have to agreed with you. I wish USA cell services was more like overseas, were people are more lock into their phone numbers then their providers. make sure to point out that you are within the unlock rules of AT$T and hopefully they will give you the code. - good luck

I'm sure everybody here support our right for unlocked devices. But this is even not the issue here. Even if we assume that AT&T has the right to lock the device, it seems that the company does give out the unlock codes to many users. That's what really frustrates me since I don't understand the reason to prefer one customer over another.
Please update us on any progress.

You just have to have been used the phone for 3-4 months for them to give you the unlock code. I have done this with previous phones, as well as with my Aria and my Mom's Aria. Both of them I bought on craigslist, so not on contract.

6 months is the standard waiting period to unlock the device....
I've called my carrier for the unlock, and was told no...I have a month left before they will even talk about it...
nice idea though......g
my phone isn't even under contract.
Lucky you ....LOL
it also helps if you tell them you are going overseas and need it unlocked asap

Now that trick may work......:good:
I tried it for mine and it worked. But a buddy of mine that just got his Note last month was denied of the lock code because he was only in his 1st month of the 2 year contract ext. I had my Note the first day of release from AT&T in Feb. They look at your current contract and determine whether to give it out or not I believe.

AT&T will now give them because it's no longer exclusive. When they were the only carrier with it they would not give it out for anything.
Tomorrow is the day ...even if it kills me ...LOL

quick question
Do I need to switch out the sim card right away, if so witch carrier is perferd?
Also can this be done on flappjaxxx stock rom?

You shut off the phone, switch sim cards, boot, enter code in network control screen, then phone registers on other network. shut it down and put your sim back, or keep going if you wanted to switch.
Flapjaxxx ULF6 rom will unlock, but not all roms will. For those that don't you flash a stock rom and unlock, then return to your preferred rom.
Always try it first!
I just tried the live chat and asked for the code because of travel out of the US -- I got the ****. I guess plan b is the customer service call. Elevator music hell, here I come.
Onced unlocked with T Mobile, correct me if I'm wrong. I will only get to make phone calls, no unlimited data and will be still with at&t. Researched forums and still a littlte unsure how this helps to save money.
unlocked means you can use any network, and whatever capabilities that network has: data, sms, mms, voip, voice.
i just did this the other day and it worked!! called told them that someone on craigslist sold me the phone and stated it was unlocked but it wasnt and that i was with tmobile and needed it unlocked, he asked for the imei number and after about 30 seconds gave me the code and asked me if i needed anything else, lol
no thanks for me? ;_;
Get the word out there people, let everyone know about this!
Don't be fooled by the scams that want $30 (or however much they are asking for) to do this SIMPLE PROCESS!!!!
just call up att/tmobile with your imei and tell them you are going overseas and need your phone unlocked.
(maybe need to be on stock rom? not really sure)

First, thank you. Second, unlocking services are not scams, and they can charge whatever people are willing to pay, and when the carrier has exclusive rights to a phone, they don't have to sell you a product that will profit their competition ( ecom 101).
And to see if you will need to revert to stock either put in a non at&t sim and boot up. You should see:

Or on the dialpad #7465625*638*# and see:
If you don't see either of these screens you will have to return to a stock rom and modem to unlock. After you enter the code you will see
You can return your phone to your preferred rom. Network lock is permanent. Flash all you want.

is g900t unlocked?

hi
i wanna buy SM-G900T and it is 650 $, therefor i suppose it is unlocked
how can i check if it is factory unlocked? or it was locked and some fella unlocked it with a trick or something (if it is possible :laugh
and if i install any official or custom ROM, will it be locked again?
thanks
It doesn't come unlocked since that is the T-Mobile model.
Not sure how to check it.
And flashing other software don't relock it.

If you are buying it for 650, buy it straight TMo. Why do you want a used one.
If buying used, you can get it for around 500. BUT... if the person reports it as stolen later, or if he defaults on its payment (if not purchased in full like on contract), the carrier can blacklist it, and you won't be able to use the phone.
S5 has been notoriously famous in US for that latter given that all major carriers are now using an integrated database of blacklisted IMEIs.
Request to see the bill from the person you are buying phone.
For AT&T, you can have him come to AT&T store, n then take the phone to the person there and have a new SIM inserted (different SIM, but same number) and register the IMEI on your name. This way the owner cannot blacklist the IMEI after the IMEI is registered on your name.
I am not sure if this process is followed by TMobile too.

it has t-mobile logo on the box, but not on the phone
so basically if there is the Sim unlock code (with the phones IMEI), there is no problem?

This process does work with tmobile. Craig's list has some interesting deals. Here is a list of the question I ask.
Clean IMEI? If it's not the rest of the questions are irrelevant.
Has it been activated? Just because it's in the box doesn't mean it's New.
Balance due? This question can only be answered by the owner. So the person doing the deal with you had better be the owner. None of this, "I doing the deal for my girlfriend."
If he claims he's authorized by the owner to do the deal ask for the Pin on account. Without that you don't have a deal.
Bottom line If the account hasn't been activated you have a deal.
If it's been activated it's not new but if the balance is paid up you can still cut a deal... for a better price.
And for clean IMEI, check with TMo store, with the seller beside you. If he is genuine, he will come with you into the store.

Tmobile says they don't sell unlocked Galaxy S5s. Which means if it's unlocked it's been opened.
Now T-mobile will unlock after 40 days.
Which raises the question, "If it's been unlocked what else was it used for?"
My questions would start with, "Are you the original owner and has this phone been activated.?"

No, even though you are paying full price and the handset is not subsidized.. it will still be locked by default by TMobile. Yeah, it is great to be a oligopoly. If you ask nicely TMobile may unlock it right away for you, more likely they will try to make you wait a month or two before agreeing to do so. But there are plenty of third-party vendors that can and will unlock your S5 now for $15 - $30.
Once unlocked, the phone will normally remain that way permanently even after OTA upgrades or if you flash a different ROM. It is possible for a carrier to relock your phone, although I haven't heard of this happening to anyone. Phones are obstensibly locked at the outset to protect the carrier against subsidy fraud but carriers also like the barrier against you easily moving to a different carrier.
And if you are paying full price, you should buy directly from TMobile or have a trusted friend buy it from TMobile for you. Buying used adds considerable risk which you shouldn't take since you are paying full price. There are a lot of scammers that will buy a phone on contract, sell it.. and subsequently report it stolen (for the insurance) or default on the subsidized contract. Even if they paid full price in cash, without a contract, have a genuine receipt and the phone is not currently on an IMEI blacklist - it could end up there two weeks later if you are not the original purchaser and they report it stolen.

FWIW, "aka" would not be a proper term to use. People will get confused xD Baseband and bootloader are two separate things. However, under your "about" you will see the baseband version which is the "modem" of the phone. It usually corresponds to which bootloader is on the device as well. Unless a different modem was flashed.

^ Another example of something that is usually but not always equivalent.
As you say, at a nuts and bolts, code level the bootlooder and baseband are not the same thing. But you are splitting hairs. In the context that I said that, they are not usually separated and are functionally equivalent.

Apparently because lots of others have done it successfully.

Help unlocking AT&T Surface Duo?

I got a Surface Duo from the recent Woot deal, and after dealing with AT&T for a week, they've closed my case saying they do not have the unlock code. I used the AT&T unlock website, as well as calling several times after the listed 2 day turn around was missed. I also called MS at one point, and they claim they do not have the unlock code and that AT&T does. So both sides are pointing at each other and I'm not sure who is telling the truth.
Is it really possible they both do not have the sim unlock code and I'm just SOL? Or is there something special I need to say or ask to point them in the right direction to get it?
Conversely, if I were to flash the MS ROM Image, would that unlock it or is it a hardware lock?
Any help would be appreciated as I really don't know what else to do other than just returning it at this point?
HighWing,
Please keep us updated. I too just got the AT&T version from Woot and am in the same boat. Thanks for initiating this thread!

There does not appear to be a model # as far as I can tell. The model is just listed as "Surface Duo" Other stuff I can find if that helps;
Hardware version: MP_A (16)
Build Number: 2021.314.92
Touch Version: 4.306.139.0
To add an update to this issue;
I tried another avenue to get a better response from AT&T, and lo and behold I got one. However, the news does not look good. They are saying that MS stopped giving AT&T unlock codes back in February. I am very much inclined to believe this person, which unfortunately means this is absolute confirmation that AT&T does not have any unlock codes for any of the recently sold Surface Duo's from Woot. They are trying one last effort to see if they can get codes and I should have another update in a day or two.
I also mentioned that I am not the only in this situation, so they are aware that there are others in need of their unlock codes as well. Unfortunately it is looking like we will have to hound MS for the codes. I am dubious if their support staff can even get them as I've already been told by MS that they don't have any Phone unlock codes.
Fingers crossed I get some good news in the next few days. but it's not looking great. :-/
Thank you for both the update & your hard work on this. We will all keep our fingers crossed.

Yes and yes...
No offense, but did you even read the starting post on this thread? Because the answers to both those questions, and several more you may ask, are in my opening post description.
I called MS this morning and the person I spoke to took down the information I gave them and said they would work on escalating the issue, and then call me back today. Seeing as it's ~5pm, it doesn't look like I'm getting a call back today. I'll bother them again tomorrow. But if I don't get any positive results by Thursday, I'm throwing in the towel and returning my Duo.

Again, thank you for all your efforts. Even though I'm in the same boat, I have decided I will not be returning mine. Until the Duo "2" gets released I plan to use mine in WiFi mode only. At that later date I will explore my options to get a reasonable/fair trade-in allowance.
So new update with some maybe helpful information.
At this point I am convinced the MS Phone Support does not know that the Surface Duo is a phone and not a PC tablet, and they do not know how to properly transfer calls either. I made several calls to them today, and each time it was clear that none of them understood what I was talking about. None of them asked me for the IMEI # and they all wanted to transfer my call to another department. The later would not have been a problem if it wasn't for the fact that I was hung up on every time they said the call was being transferred.
I eventually changed tactics and started trying other options on the call prompts. Each one getting disconnected when they tried to transfer me to the "Correct department"... One of the options mentioned a website and using the online support instead, so I figured it was worth a shot. I used the online chat, and this time the person asked for my IMEI #. Even better, they gave me a case # as they needed to escalate this issue. Unfortunately, they said it could take 24-72hrs to get an update, and the only way to get an update was to wait for them to e-mail me. :-( I'm not too happy about those options, but this feels like there is at least some movement instead of hitting brick walls.
At this point I would suggest everyone else trying this as if we can get enough people creating tickets with the same issue, maybe MS will notice there is a problem here. As an FYI you will need a MS account *(the free one you used for windows 10 will work)* and you will need to register/link the s/n of the Duo to your account. What I did was:
Goto help.microsoft.com and click on the blue "Contact US" button on the middle right side of the page.
A new window will open up asking you to sign in with your MS account. *(If you have a windows PC/laptop, you should have a MS account)*
Next a series of questions will ask you about what device you are inquiring about, and eventually it will come to a window that will ask you to register the new device. *(This is where you need the s/n)*
You should now be put in a queue to wait to chat with someone.
This is the important part, once you get someone, you will need to tell ALL of the following information.
That you need the sim unlock code for your phone.
AT&T has confirmed that MS stopped giving them the unlock codes. So AT&T does not have the codes at all.
3rd party vendors are unable to get the unlock code as well.
Hopefully if all goes well, they should ask for your IMEI # and then create a case # for you.
Hopefully if enough people do this, it may help us to get a favorable resolution faster. *Fingers crossed*
Followed your advice and just went through the process. It was one of the most satisfying support connections that I've ever experienced anywhere. I was told that I'd have answer back within 24 to 720 hours. The one very interesting thing was the rep said:
"We are receiving reports that AT&T is not been able to unlock it. And I want to give you the best support you deserve. We will need to escalate your case to a higher lever in our end, and they will help us to get a resolution for your case."
Like you: "FINGERS CROSSED!"
Thank you again!

Your welcome One thing to note, I did get a response back a few hours later basically telling me to contact AT&T. However, they did not immediately close my ticket, and I have been pushing back reminding them that AT&T is saying that only MS can help now. I just talked to another person who I have confidence in that they fully understand the problem. Unfortunately they also implied that we may not be able to get the codes. But as long as the case is still open, and someone understands the problem, there is still a chance at getting these unlocked.
Just got an e-mail with this:
"Your case has moved to a higher level and they are actively working in this situation. I am constantly reviewing your case and as soon as I get a resolution, I will let you know so we can get this resolved successfully."
Looks like I will be joining you all in this unlock saga... this whole supply chain of Microsoft + ATT / 3rd Party Seller / Woot is quite hindrance. I will post if I am able to enable GoogleFi Sim on this device. I have already submitted the unlock request to AT&T and gotten the standard response of

Woot had sent me second phone in a replacement request that also came with AT&T sim and network locked. I tried ATA& Unlock as an existing customer (my friend's) of AT&T for the second device..the response there was prompt stating Surface Duo is not supported by AT&T.
I will now initiate requests with Microsoft next.
Kuppu,
I agree with HighWing that this will need to be resolved by Microsoft. The tech that I spoke with there last week reached out again on Friday but with no new info. I've got my fingers crossed that I'll hear something next week.
I only have one update at the moment as I was only recently given permission to post it, but it's a good one. (See attached image) While it may not look like much, it's from AT&T support, and states 2 things. 1) MS was the source of the unlock codes for MS phones for AT&T, and 2) MS is the only ones that can resolve this issue.

Do you have proof of a Surface Duo, purchased in/after February 2021, being unlocked by a 3rd party vendor? Because I have proof that several can not unlock this phone.

Question Pixel 6 ATT/FirstNet Carrier unlock

This question is for anyone who has a pixel 6, or really any new pixel (5, 5a, 4a) on At&T or Firstnet (same policies).
Does ATT's Sim unlock also enable Bootloader unlock. (Ungrey the setting in dev options and allow root).
Trying to confirm what this user said: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/at-t-pixel-5-is-carrier-locked.4195785/post-84100651
For anyone who says "Just buy a Google one", I can't. I'm a first responder and need a full firstnet capable device. I also don't have $900 to spend on a pixel 6 pro, especially when FirstNet is discounting the mmwave + sub 6 pixel 6 $200 for first responders.
THIS IS FOR TMOBILE but is prob similar on ATT -- i have owned several tmobile oneplus devices, as well as countless other tmobile devices. can't help but trade in my old junk, you know? anyway, if you are getting your phone on EIP, then you will need to stay on the network for 40 days before you can ask tmobile to SIM unlock your phone. and they will do it. no questions. just make sure that phone is activated on the tmo network for 40 days. this is for SIM unlock.
alternatively, you can pay the phone off in full. then tmobile will SIM unlock it for your sooner. again, this is SIM unlock.
alternatively (#2), there's a guy on XDA who does this for Tmobile. he requires 3 days of active service. there may be someone similar for ATT.
once you are SIM unlocked, the OEM UNLOCKING toggle becomes active. at that point you can turn it on.
from there, its a matter of using fastboot commands to unlock the bootloader. or whatever other methods are necessary on a pixel phone. i've owned oneplus phones for the last 8 years so this will all be new to me when i get my pixel 6 in a couple days.

Yes. I purchased a Pixel 6 from AT&T and have subsequently paid it off and unlocked it. My OEM unlocking toggle is no longer grayed out.

Did you have to fill out their online web form , or put in the new sim for it to ungrey out ? How long did it take to allow you to change the setting?
Also thanks for answering. This is good news.
Interesting. Does anyone know if you have to have an AT&T account to purchase an AT&T phone at full retail price (ie: without buying it on a plan and then paying it off)?
I wonder if it would be possible to purchase an AT&T Pixel 6 outright so it's unlocked, unlock the bootloader, and use it on Verizon (with full Sub-6 and mmWave support).

It looks like you would have to have an account and choose a plan, but you could cancel it immediately if you bought the phone at full price. At worst you would have to pay $30 for activation, but hopefully not.

Seems doable.
I wonder if the VZ and/or AT&T variant of the firmware is needed for mmWave to function correctly or if the "global," non carrier-specific firmware still includes drivers for mmWave (even though the global variant of the phone lacks a mmWave modem).
Probably a stretch, but I figure it's worth asking: You wouldn't happen to have access to and/or know somebody that has a 5G Verizon phone with a 5G sim you could test it with, do you? Even better would be in an area with known-working 5G mmWave.

Good question. I had assumed the mmWave capability was hardware-dependent. Honestly I'm not sure.

Question Pixel 6 Tmobile Bootloader unlock issues

Super excited received my P6 from tmobile today, loving it so far, except for the fact that i cant unlock the device!, i received it and dev option was already enabled and the device has a greyed out Oem unlock with (cannot be used on carrier locked device)
I believe you can unlock the bootloader once the device has been paid off in full. That was the case with my 4 xl anyway
So you need to contact tmobile and get an unlock code, or look for an unlock app here, but I'll try to help by asking, whats a p6?
A year away from leaving primary school lol...
Nah, seriously, who made the p6?

You have to the sim unlocked. TMobile's policy is 40 days after purchase and paid off, they will unlock the sim, which provides the authorization (ungrey) to unlock the bootloader.
You can try and chat with T-Mobile via social media and they may or may not unlock the sim for you. It's good to have a reason you need it unlocked.
I answer a question in the HELP OTHERS ANSWER UN_ANSWERED QUESTIONS... thanks...
Ah, GOOGLE made it. That was not in the title, hence my question.

Ask @mobbdeep
Your best bet is chat, if the chat doesn't do it. Call in during mid day to get ahold of a local expert. You can ask for a whitelist of your IMEI. 'Your job requires it to have the bootloader unlock'.
Had mine done today because the software was broken - forced flash all partitions through the pixel utility.
But give T-Maybe a call.
It took me (7) times, yes 6 returns and re-upgrades before i got the right rep to whitelist the IMEI, before i even took the device out of the box, the customer service rep had the IMEI whitelisted and Carrier Unlocked Successfully.
I am awaiting my P6P now, and if the 1st boot with no SIM doesn't work, to the phone i'll go...
I talked to a FB chat rep and he didn't do it for me. Attempt 1 is a failure. I'll try again tomorrow and then maybe everyday once. All I need is just one considerate rep.

Throughout the years I've noticed @T-MobileHelp on Twitter has more tools/authority in General, over Customer Care or in a Store. That being said, they are more "by the book" and stick to the rules more. The only difference was I told them it was a replacement device, and my last Pixel (4XL) was Unlocked. No questions asked, the Rep flipped the switch without question. Device was NOT paid off, it was actually billed to my account, downpayment and all...

Actually, right after my reply last night at 1:30 am CST, I talked to a customer service rep and asked her to out my device to whitelist. And she did it! She said that it'll take up to 24 hours for the request to get processed. She also confirmed that then my device will be network unlocked and I'll be able to OEM unlock.
20 hours have passed since then and I'm waiting patiently...

This contradicts most of what we know. For T-Mobile to have your IMEI in their system, you’d have to have the SIM card in the phone and have used it, otherwise they wouldn’t have record of your IMEI? Even @mobbdeep who was the user here that unlocks TMO for us for free, one his requirements was exactly this, the device to be unlocked needs to have the SIM currently installed for a minimum of 3 days. He even went as far as saying if we happened to remove it at any time, the 3 day minimum resets. But other Pixel 6 users said they were able to unlock the same or next day after buying it so maybe 3 days is no longer required, however the phone sim still needed to be inserted for your IMEI to show in the system. How did you unlock a device that you hadn’t possessed yet and why the need to return the device 6-7 times? If TMO refused to unlock you, there’s no need to return or reupgrade your device? There’s nothing wrong with it, the issue is with the TMO rep, them refusing to help means they likely did nothing to your device at all so no need to exchange it?
I asked Twitter T-Mobile help to get my phone unlocked. They did it for me. After I got the notification I tried to use the unlock app from T-Mobile for Google pixels only. It didn't work. I suspect you don't need it though.
