Light leakage? - HTC EVO 3D

Anyone else having light leak out at the bottom of the phone where the glass and plastic meet?

I have the same thing with mine. I had the same deal with the 4G so I'm use to it.

yes, there are a few threads already about this issue. some people are saying it is just the reflection of the bright ass lights on the heptic buttons bouncing off the lip of the case but i don't think it is. if i put something in between the buttons and the bottom of the phone i still see it. it doesn't bother me one bit. u have to be really anal to have this be a big issue.

Yea, I didn't think much of it. Didn't notice it till tonight. Sorry about the repost didnt see a main thread about it. = / I think I kinda like it tho, it rounds out the bottom of the phone. Is sorta a dock for the buttons. =}

Not really a issue for me its due to the bright ass keys I know what light leakage is I had it once on a refurbished EVO in the past. Happy the 3d no issue for me also the tpu case seems to work really well with it .
Stops that funky ass rattle u would get when typing on the on screen keyboard due to the camera button . First time I heard it was hoping it wasn't my glass on the screen coming apart had that happen on the EVO glue wasnt that good.

[Q] Light leak from capacitive buttons onto screen?

If I look down at my thunderbolt standing in profile mode on kickstand at a sharper angle, I can see the lights for the capacitive buttons. You have to look at a very sharp angle and functionally it doesn't matter, but I just wanted to see if this is a just me thing or common.
As I'm about to take this pic with my old Inc I notice it has it too and I never saw it for a year. Funny what you notice when you're looking hard for problems.
Pic of what I'm talking about:
Mine does the same thing.

Yeah, its a common "problem", if you even want to call it that. No need to worry, about 80% of TB users have it. There is a thread that shows you how to stop it here somewhere. But you have to dismantle the TB and put silicone on it I believe. Too much work for something that really doesn't matter IMO.
Yeah not a big deal or enough for me to do anything about...got curious. Had read about leaks around buttons themselves and siliconing them, but not sure this is really accessible.
Silicone around the screen is what his referring to. I silicone around my bolt cause I had two light leak dots below my buttons plus it keeps dust from seeping through underneath it. but the light issues you have is a normal thing. Every tbolt I see has one.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Yep that is normal for my TBolt
I don't have the light leak. Weird. *knock-on-wood* My T-Bolt seems to be flawless. I just hope my 15 month-old son doesn't get ahold of it and try to put it in the toaster or VHS player (yes I still have one of those).
If I did have the light leak though, from the pictures, it looksl ike it is only pronounced in pitch-black settings. Not sure if it would bother me.

Anyone else's have really bad light leakage at the bottom??

can you post a pic please?
my first one did took it back. second one is decent.
Between light leakage and dead pixels I would say there are a few with cosmetic issues out there. I had to take my first phone back in for an exchange because it had a dead pixel in the right hand corner and also had dust underneath the camera lens. Looked over my replacement in the store and checked for dead pixels with the Dead Pixel Test app and it was fine. Failed to notice this eye sore near my search button. When capacitive buttons are lit up this thing is hard not to notice. Called Customer Service and they are supposed to call me tomorrow to let me know about yet another exchange...
I have some too. It's nothing to care about tho, my buttons and 2D-3D switch are solid unlike some who are having over sensitivity issues. If I am anal about my phone id be spending too much time with sprint customer service and less time enjoying a great device. If i complained I'd probably get a phone with other issues. I have warranty and insurance, if something REALLY goes wrong, ill just get a replacement. My real goal is not to drop this baby
In your picture, the white "dot" near your search button...is that where the light sensor is on your hardware? Mine is located just above and to the left of my "back" button...that would be weird if it was actually in two different locations. Or is it just a reflection from somewhere?
...just to be clear, I am referring to the first picture that was posted.

Light sensor is always located on the top of the device.
On the 3vo its to the right of the HTC logo on top of your phone
From working in a plastic injection molding company it looks as if the white glowing spec is where it wasn't fully painted or molded (aka short shot) before the layer of glass was placed over it... Causing a leak of light
All speculation don't qoute me on it

what HW version do you have? I have some small light leakage at the bottom too BUT i think the big thing different from the evo4g screens is that the screens are very tight, when you try to push them down they dont budge. With the 4G you could pinch the screen and the light leakage would go away some. With the 3d thats not the case.
Now as far as your 2d/3d button. how is it play wise front to back? mine wiggles a bit front to back but is very solid top to bottom(direction to switch to 2d-3d).
Guys,
Use screen filter from the marker. Set transparency to 100% it won't filter anything but will dim the capacative buttons to almost off. Just a band aid for now but it will help.
No light leakage here, but I headache a case that would hide out I'd there was, so for right now I'm not worried.

That is exactly what mine looks like. I'm using that screen filter app and trying to forget that it's there for now. I'll make a switch if anything near the end of the 30 days. What I'm really trying to get used to after my nova screen EvO4G is the yellowish hue over everything. Seems like an Epson panel all over again
HTC just needs to dim those capacative Buttons down. No reason for it to be that bright. So annoying useing it at night/ in the dark.
That would be awesome if someone could write an app to control the light of the capacitive buttons. I mean if screen filter can shut them on/off....
i got a little bit, and although id rather it not be there, i really dont mind it at all...
reason is, that unlike the one the OG EVO had which looked like a mess because its random spots where it leaks where it looks ugly, but on the E3D it looks like a slight (very very slight) glowing ring around the bottom which doesnt look that bad IMO
It's not light bleed LOL those are so bright its a reflection . So don't worry not light leaking .

It's Not Light Leakage!

I kept reading about this in the forums until I got mine and noticed it for myself. It's actually not light leakage. The light from the capacitive buttons is so bright, it reflects off of the, ever so slight, edge around the glass. If you feel around the edge, you can just barely feel the raised edge. The way this thing is built, I find it hard to believe that they would skimp on that part.
The light is visible even if you cover the buttons, so it's not reflecting from outside the chassis. No doubt it's hitting and reflecting off the glass, but it's internal, where you would expect there to be some sort of enclosure around the LEDs to prevent such an occurrence. Doesn't really bother me though.

I believe you're right. Reaper said the same in a similar thread around here. This phone is sealed tight, it's not like the OG EvO. HTC needs to tone down the capacitive buttons in an update. For now, Screen Filter works.
the buttons on the bottom sometimes active when your thumb is hovering over it, not even touching it.. pretty crazy, i thought i was nuts but i've replicated it on not only my phone but my wife's phone as well
I like it better turned off.
Damn, your right! Oh well, not a deal breaker by any means. I guess I was quick to jump the gun, lol.

Exactly...why don't you guys cover the buttons and tell me yours magically doesn't have the ring anymore...very annoying and unacceptable.

Mine does it too. The capacitive threshold is set too light. Hopefully that's a build.prop value (or something along that line that can be edited) that we can adjust when we get root.

Very clearly light leakage. I covered mine with electrical tape and it was still EXTREMELY obvious. I could honestly care less though.
Call it what you want, but it's due to the capacitive buttons being excessively too bright. People are complaining regardless of "light leakage". It needs to be toned down a tad.

Never has a single problem with my EVO in the year I had it, with the exception of dropping it down a flight of (concrete) stairs last month and completely destroying it. No light leaking. No speaker issues. No camera issues. No flash issues. No button issues...need I continue?
Clearly HTC is capable of making a (physically) good phone...don't know that this one is it.
there are plenty of people who had light leak and screen lift with the evo.
just because you got a good one does not mean that overall the build quality was better then the evo 3d.
Those damned lights are so bright, I can see the outside on a sunny day. What a waste. Gimme a setting to kill them permanently. I know there's an app, but I like auto brightness on the rest. Somebody make an app that let's me leve auto but turns off those lights!

Streaks in screen

It may be hard to see in the picture, but my phone has streaks or ripples inside the screen. I noticed the problem day one before putting on a screen protector. Does anyone else have this issue or do I have a defective device?
If you're referring to the pyramid looking shapes "underneath" your screen that you can only really see from a side angle...that is what allows you to see the 3d images...if you're not referring to those...then we need a better pic, because there's too much going on in your current one to tell what could be a flaw

It's tough to see exactly what you mean, but I think I see what you're talking about. The flash reflection makes it difficult to see. Anyways, if it's not the screen protector causing it, then I'd probably say it's defective. I have no flaws or blemishes in my screen at all. I'd take it to Sprint and get it checked out.
normal...stop looking at your phone in unusable angels under bright lights and you should be ok and never see it.
I do apologize for the lousy pic. I was reading about the 3D tech in the screen and understand that is there. Instead of my screen being solid black when it's off, it has random marks that kind of look like stretch marks. In a dark room its unnoticeable however at work(where it's bright as crap) I can actually see the lines while the screen is on. Couldn’t find any info on this anywhere.
I had the same thing on my first E3D and the guy at sprint thought I was crazy. You can only see them at the right angle so they are not noticeable 85% of the time. When I got my hands on a second E3D and held it just right the guy saw the same thing and did a return. No problems with the screen on my new one.
Mine is evident at any angle. I hate to complain, but I'll have this phone for over 2 years so I think I'll convince my sprint store to trade it out again. First one had large dust, dead pixels, majorly tilted screen. For me if I didn’t notice it all the time at work then it wouldn’t be an issue, but I do.
My friend had **** appear under his screen.... I want to say it looked like liquid, but it was very uniform and the water sticker things had not been tripped. it could only be seen under bright light such as the sun. Needless to say he returned it, the store employee said he had never seen it before.

Slightly, but nowhere near as prominent and uniform as with the 3d. You had 5 bad phones homie!
Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. I researched all over the internet and could not find a reasoning behind these so called water marks or stretch marks under the screen. It must have something to do with the way HTC melds the screen together. Anyway I'm going to the sprint store today to see if they will work with me as it is obviously a defect. Seems to be an extremely rare issue so far or no one has noticed. Unfortunately for me where I work we have very bright lights so I noticed it right away. As with any product there seems to be a few bad batches of these phones out there. Hopefully number 3 will be near perfect.
Here's a slightly better pic
Perhaps you could clean the screen and then post a fresh pic. I'm having a difficult time discerning smudges from what you're referring to.
Do you have a screen protector on your phone?
Me and 3 friends have 3d's. Every one has the same thing, if you look at them from the side, almost 90 degrees, you can see a texture to the glass, and it almost seems like you would be able to feel it, but I believe its just the gorilla glass resin.

The screen was totally clean in the new pic. Yes I have a stick on screen protector and it has no effect on my problem. I realized I couldn't whipe the streaks out before I put it on.

lol.....I KNOW IT SOUNDS EXTREME, but i got my first one since launch...so yes, thru all the time up till i got my 3D i had 5.....i know 2 i dropped in paint at work....woo-hoo....LOL. hmmmm, i dunno it seemed to me that the ripples looks the same on both, but hey, i could be wrong.
EDIT....and im talking about the ripples....not scratches..i dont think scratched would be there by default
I would take it in. I can clearly see what you're talking about, and mine definitely doesn't have any kind of vertical streaking like that.
Okay, if the screen was clean in that last pic, I think I see what you're talking about now. The darker lines that almost look like a fingernail drew them? And you're sure they aren't between your screen protector and the glass? I'd take it back, that's not right.

Physical Screen Issue

So I am using my phone at night and I noticed some light bleeding. Not the usual one everyone talks about but at the very bottom of the screen where the Home button is. I can see light being emitted across the base of the screen where it meets the surrounding.
When I press the screen in on that section it goes away. So upon closer inspection I can see that the screen is slightly raised at that section and I can press down on it and it will be level but slowly raise back up causing the light bleeding.
Great. Anyway I bought this phone second hand. Do you think HTC will honor the warranty if I send it in to fix the screen?

After reading this I noticed I have this too. Im not sending mine since it doesn't bother me at all but if yours is really bad you should send it back. I don't see why they wouldn't make a warranty exchange.
Try and snap a picture, it'd help a lot more people see what the problem looks like

its normal, i have it too, so does my dad's amaze, both new phones
Hmmmm seems like another common issue. Ill try to take some pics today to show everyone what I am talking about. It amazes me, no pun intended, that I switched back to HTC from Samsung for better build quality and so far I've had so many issues already compared to the Vibrant I had before this phone.

I also have it, Atleast i think its a light bleed, ive also thought that maybe its the light from the display just reflecting off the lifted edges/bezle??? Doesnt bother me much either anymore.
Noticed this the first day I have got the Amaze. Went back to the store, check the demo model, another new one sealed in box does the same thing, we are SOL
If I have the light enabled on the soft keys, I can see it.
Since day 1 it has been there but now it's creeping up the sides...as if the glass might simply 'pop' out one day, that's something I can reinstall.
Another vote for "visible".
thats really weird. I have a telus amaze and no problems here :/ just the normal screen bleed because of the light of the buttons.
Pics with and without the soft keys enabled, taken with my wife's amaze...which is also showing separation.
Always thought it was just a part of the design.

The gap has quickly moved from the bottom, up the sides.
After yeas of consistent use my HD2 case was bowed in on the sides, probably from the "stress" of 5 beautiful children...that includes twins.
lol.
The Amaze cases don't seem vulberable to such forces of massive rage grip, so hopefully no pop.
Both phones were complimentary due to a tmobile blunder, so no insurance (ocd kept my HD2 pristine, these should be fine) I'll do the 3m tape thing I've read so much about on the Sensation forums.
Now THERE'S a poorly built phone...kripes.

however it is your pretty glow, win/win!
Screen bleed is normal in the sense that it is common, but I for one do not consider it acceptable. It is not inevitable, and you can get a screen that doesn't have it.
I just tell myself that these screens are made super quickly and put in these phones super quickly, assembled by some in all likelihood poor underpaid worker.
I cut them some slack, although screen bleed absolutely bothers me. What I dislike is the lottery process. I would pay more for a screen that could guarantee no screen bleed.
