Evo 3D Blue LED swap - HTC EVO 3D

Hi all.
Im back again to show off my LED swap for the Evo 3D along with some comparison pics of the Evo 4G and Hero LED swap.
I changed not only the bottom LEDs but also the charge LEDs to blue/white
The Evo 4G wasn's as nice as the 3D as the LEDs didn't shine through as nicely but here are some pics for you to check out

Thank you all,
yea most my friends dont know why i open stuff the second i get them to tweak them out. lol
as for a tutorial its pretty strait forward take the phone apart, and their are 2 boards with LEDs, on them the top and bottom.
unsolder the old LEDs and solder in the new ones
their is a video on youtube i just found if you cant take apart the phone, even though its pretty simple, 6 screws, pop the case apart and another 2 on the inside holding down the top board with the camera. you also have to take out some ribbon cables and such to remove the motherboard of the Evo.
If you are not familiar with soldering SMD components then i do not suggest this is for you.
the top board is actually a flex board which you can damage pretty easily.
On the flex board is a single bi-color LED in which i just swapped out for 2 single color LEDs

M37R01D, great post! Thank you.
The mod looks great but soldering on that scale is still a little intimidating, to me
I found a great video on soldering surface-mount devices:

Dayum! That white LED in the Hero is tits.

The first part of that video with the 0603 size resistor they solder is the same size as the LEDs needed for this.
But look more on desoldering as that part is a bit harder and their is more risk screwing up the solder pads then the actual installation of the LEDs

The hero I did opposite
Charging is white full charge is blue
on the Evo's I did blue for charging and white when full.

I'm sooooooooooo jealous!! I love blue!

I did that with my old blackberry curve, I colored the LEDs red with a Sharpie to match the housing, so I had red back lighting on the keyboard. This looks way cool, but warranty is now void right?
I'd pick red or amber to its not as bright.

Interestingly enough, I looked into that. The "rear flash pack" the guy is talking about doesnt exist. The static image at the beginning of the phone with the back off is PHOTOSHOPPED to show an LCD on there. Yay, he touched an app on the screen that "turned on the lcd"! I could disassemble an lcd flashlight and tape the contact point, battery and lcd to the back of my phone and duplicate this video. I could even put an icon on my desktop to press too, just to make it look nifty! Notice how nowhere in the video does he show the back of the phone ON video in good light.
Oh, and very interesting that people have been asking the guy for the link for his "rear flash pack" for almost a year and hes given 0 responses.
Theres no proof of concept there. You know how ridiculous a mod like that would be? Not only would you have to have the knowledge of the circuitboards to solder the lcd leads on, but you would also have to know android well enough to know how to activate those specific contact points. Hell, we cant even figure out how to crack the rogers coding yet, what makes you think that someone out there figured all this out?
EDIT: Heres proof:
This is the "picture" from said video.
Increase the image to biggest size and notice the following:
-The LCD holes arent round.
-The LCD holes are PIXELATED
-The LCD holes are drilled right through a flimsy metal clip under the battery door. Look at it on YOUR phone and tell me how thats possible without the clip breaking into pieces and falling off.
-the rim of the LCD holes has obviously had the burn tool in photoshop applied to it (notice how its darker around the edges than any other part of the phone.
Oh, and the coup de grace: THE PICTURE IS AN UNBOXING PHOTO FROM THE PHONE'S RELEASE LAST SEPTEMBER. You can see the G1 box and all of the box contents on the floor right under the phone!
Well.. that brings us back to square one, ill bust out my nikon as soon as I get my phone up and running again, ran into some minor (i mean major) technical difficulties.

it is indeed kewl. i did this on my evo in blue. but then as themes kept coming out i was stuck with the blue leds cause i actually painted the bulbs and the themes and mods no longer matched .
I was thinking of doing it in red. Matches the cam and I tend to keep my themes really dark so it shouldn't clash, I hope!

Just 1 layer. I was actually afraid the light wouldn't shine through properly because the tape looks opaque. But once you get it on it looks pretty nice. Also make sure you cover the LEDs evenly. The first time I did it one of them wasn't covered properly and it made my Menu button orange lol.
$2.17 at Walmart, radio shack was sold out. How big of a piece of tape did you use?

Rezound LED modification to soft touch keys

Some of you were mentioning you didnt like how the LEDs on keys seemed pink or not true red, well i had some time on my hands and i changed my white LEDs to Red ones, which offer a much nicer red to the keys and here are some pics to show the two left which i changed to red, and the 2 right which are the standard stock ones.

Pretty slick dude, and how sad is it HTC didn't think of this themselves?! Did you take any pics of the phone taken apart of the LED's you used?
A tutorial and/or pics would be awesome! That looks much better.
they might have thought the red shining up instead of white would be distracting on the screen, who knows.
either way, those are some pink ass buttons...but now they look as red as mine lol
Nice pictures, easy to see what people were talking about when they said they had pink buttons.
Was it just a colored strip that changes the color from white to red (Pink)?
Okay, now I know mine are def red. Was driving myself crazy looking at them this morning wondering if they were turning pink on me or if it was an optical illusion against the red design on the wallpaper. lol. But even in my paranoia I didn't see anything truly pink like that.
But what I really want to know is what are you hiding on your screen?
That's cool. I didn't think mine looked pink enough. Would be awesome to make the pink stand out even more.
Is this phone a mess on the inside with the double sided sticky tape also? I hated having to heat up the Thunderbolt to get between the LCD & digitizer.
My keys don't look near as pale as yours do. U can tell they are red but they aren't dark... I think they didn't do red leds because of the screen leak and they were already going to make the keys red anyway.
But I think the red leak looks kind of sweet. Not sure how I would like it at night though...
U wanna do mine next? Lol.

Wow, nice mod. pwrdbykyank, YGPM
lol, i didnt take any pics of it apart this time, but i have pics up on the disassembly thread i made of it how it looks where the leds are. I used 0603 leds. There is no strip covering the original, they are just white leds. the digitizer glass is just tinted red to show red. Also the light doesnt leak onto the screen, i just tilted the phone and took a pic like that so you guys can see where the two red are and the two white. you can only see it by looking at a sharp angle from top down like that, or else you dont see the red coming on the screen Looks good at night, i wanted to add 2 LEDs to where the earpiece grill is, so that would light up on notification buttt looked like way to much work and i didnt want to alter the housing around to run wires through it so i said forget it lol.
oh ya and i covered the screen so the camera wouldnt focus on the LCD light, it kept bluring so ya lol or else my desktop is as plain as it came out of the box haha

Red HTC logo mod on rezound battery door

I didnt like the black on black look of the door with the logo on the same backround color, so i took the letters out and painted them maroon red with spray paint and put them back. That does look pretty good. They should have made it that way to begin with.
Not pink like the 4 buttons at the bottom?
Also, it'd be more work then it's worth, but rather then removing the HTC letters you could also carefully place masking tape all around them & leave them on while you spray paint.
Oh wait.. The whole battery backing... Spray paint the entire thing like shiny silver or something.... Or the entire phone shiny silver(minus the screen/buttons ofcourse.

All I've seen you do is just bash the phone again and again LOL. Just drop the damn thing and get the Prime or RAZR .
You guys thought i was bashing it from the spray painting comment?... heh... Actually, i think it would be cool to customize it in such a way(or any phone for that matter). If i was confident in my spray painting abilities id give it a go.
p.s. the pink buttons are cool to (i did used to have a Toyota Supra that was heavily "riced out" w/ a custom 2 tone candy pink paint job & rims painted green... the pink buttons on the phone made me laugh & remember the car).
i would paint the phone but its never like factory, they use special adhesion stuff and ya ive painted phones before but never comes out perfect specially rubber ones dont stick they come off easy. But yea the logos come off easy too so not to hard to just take off and paint

i'm thinking it would be cool to paint around the edges of the phone itself, just cover the screen with something....
as for the back cover, since it is rubber... the antenna parts... i wonder if it'd be possible to just temporarily remove them & then dunk the back cover into some sort of 'flexible' paint meant for rubber materials & coat it in primer to.
i think i'm going to test on one of my old Thunderbolt cases

Red Capacitive Buttons...I know this was mentioned before

I searched and read through the other threads on this, and I just wanted to ask what those of you with the pink buttons did to correct it, if anything at all.
4 phones later I have a perfect, dead pixel free screen, but super pink buttons...I am not exchanging this phone for that as a good screen IMHO is more important than red buttons.
I just didn't know if anyone had done anything easy to do that they would recommend to make em RED!
I couldn't tell the difference between red and pink on my buttons if I my life depended on it. For all I know, I could have magenta buttons.

hahaha, i am pretty picky about colors. I don't think after a couple days the pink will bother me that much, I just know how red than can be!
some guy on here was replacing the LED's with red ones, and another member sent his phone to him to do it, and was pleased with the results..
someone else painted the bulbs red
I just gotta say, maybe the buttons were neve supposed to be exactly red, just not white. gotta love the phone for what it is beside the off red/pink buttons. sheesh.
My buttons looked pinky at first but now look more red. Maybe they need to season up for awhile?

I don't about easy but there's a couple methods in this thread, one involving soldering and one involving just a sharpie. There may be other methods but that's what I remember seeing.

g damn, that is pink! I was starting to think mine were pink because i can't really tell the difference but now I see...
I came up with the Sharpie method, and while it isn't permanent like the LED method, it's help up just fine ever since I did it, almost a month ago. For those not too confident with soldering or modifying the system board in the phone, go for an alternate method for making them red, such as a Sharpie. I've heard that paint can eat away the LED's, but not quite sure about that.
I didn't notice that mine were more pinkish until my gf's was next to mine. Her's are darker and more red but i honestly could careless...It looks fine when its not next to another rezound...
