[Q] WTF is the problem?! - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, my A101IT has been slowly but surely giving me the F*U "finger" and I'm really getting sick of it. I'm about as sick enough to newly take up the sport of Disc Golf and use my A101IT as my starting first disc frisbee!
Here are all of my problems:
1) Completely dead USB port.
2) WiFi turns itself on only half the time when the device is turned on from being off. (Device's Wifi Setting reads "Error" most of the time when device is turned on from being off, yet the device is always connected AND authorized with correct network password at my home).
3) Now my soft buttons on the far right side of the screen have vanished and I cannot get them back whatsoever.
Side Notes:
I have never uninstalled or "accidentally" deleted anything I wasn't supposed to but I will say I do have it permanently rooted to FW 2.3.20 via Chulri's Method. One-by-one these problems stared happening about a month ago. I'm considering upgrading to FW 2.3.26 but I don't know if that will fix my WiFi problem? Also, how do I get my soft buttons back?! Hell, for that matter can ANYTHING be done to fix ANY of the above?! Also, I had previously installed a 3rd-party Wifi Manager and that still didn't work.
Please help because I'm about to lose my mind here! .... I'm seriously starting to doubt Archos for sure now and as the rest of the year progresses with a more passionate hatred! Knowing that there has been vast amounts of proof (on XDA here & ArchosFans) that the Gen 8 A101IT is **** and is not really expected to work let alone turn on after 6 months of being perfectly new just makes me wonder how "reliable" the new Gen 9 series A101IT's are going to be.
P.S. - I bought mine off eBay from this guy who bought the A101IT as new back in March '11 and used it maybe 5-6 times so I bought it off him in late April '11. Nothing was on the device and everything was wiped clean. From the time I bought it off him-to-the end of May I never had any problems whatsoever because at that point I thought Archos was the best tablet company on the market but that all changed last month.
Any and all suggestions are welcome! If I use it as my first disc golf frisbee what color should I spray paint it? Or maybe take it out to my local gun shooting range and use it as target practice?

To be fair, some of this has nothing to do with Archos. You need to reinstall your firmware. If your soft buttons "disappeared" without you setting the board.prop, something is seriously wrong with the UnionFS.
As for the rest of it, you are an early adopter, that's the price you pay for wanting a tablet before the hardware was viable. Buy a second gen Transformer or Xoom if you want a "finished" product.
I don't blame you for not knowing(definitely not flaming you or anything), but Archos has, and will always be, a pioneer. They were the first to make an mp3 player, the first to use a hard drive in media players, the first to have color screens, the first to have touchscreens, etc. There are heavy costs associated with pioneering, so they simply aren't going to make as good a product as the rest, because they get theirs out at least a year before the other companies can get to market.

And they were the first, who did an android tablet
The A5It for 200€ i had this it was very laggy but after some fw updates it was good.
I sold my A5It to a friend, and now he get Cyanogenmod..(propably)
Bubu said he work on that
This is another hope for me:
If A5IT, stock 1.6, gets Gingerbread(2.3.4), i think we'll get HC or ICS

Ok, well it seems that something major was wrong with my permanent rooted install of FW 2.3.20 via Chulri's Method so I figured why not try to install UrukDroid 1.0? Installing UrukDroid also got my soft buttons back on my screen via the "Small Buttons" setting on UrukDroid AND fixed my Wifi connection problem I was having before and it seems to be real neat and a hell of a lot more stable than Chulri's Method but I have one (probably) minor problem. Whenever the device gets turned on from being off OR I go to install a Google Market App it gives me an error message that reads... "The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I don't know if it has been asked on how to fix that problem with the process thing because I skimmed over some of the UrukDroid Installation in the Dev's forum but I didn't find anything on how to solve it. So are there any solutions to this so I can get rid of this annoying little message??
Also, it shows that the version of my FW is 2.1.8 but I get this notification to upgrade to FW 2.3.26 and I'm just wondering if it's a good idea to upgrade? If I upgrade to FW 2.3.26 will I lose my permanent root access with UrukDroid 1.0?

You can't upgrade through Uruk, just ignore the message. As for the force close, try installing Arctools from Appslib, and using it to reinstall the Google applications.

Did it help with the dead USB port?

I wouldn't count on that.
The 101 ( the first few batches ) is known to blow the usb port, that's why archos quickly accepts RMA on it.
If you bought it at Saturn/MM try to talk to them.

Well here is what I ended up doing to solve the "disappearing soft buttons.":
- I completely and fully reformatted my A101IT to factory settings.
- Reinstalled UrukDroid 1.0
- Flashed Chulri's Kernel to get permanent root access for FW 2.3.26 at 1000 MHz
(Found out that the OC to 1200 MHz for FW 2.3.20 will not work whatsoever for FW 2.3.26, but Chulri's Method of Permanent Root Access works on FW 2.3.26 only to an OC of 1000 MHz. I now see that the above case is pretty obvious but not at first to noobs like me when I first started out).
- Rebooted
- Device works now but the Wifi thing keeps on happening but less often.
As a side note:
No, removing Chulri's Method and Installing UrukDroid 1.0 did not solve the dead USB port. I didn't think installing UrukDroid 1.0 would solve it anyway since it's a deep hardware issue. I'm assuming in due-time the USB port eventually dies because the battery is too close in proximity to the USB port on the inside when it heats up and probably gets so hot from normal use that it unsolders the USB port from the motherboard after a certain amount of time possibly because the USB port and the battery coils and its connections are probably improperly heat resistant. Kind of like the Xbox 360's Ring of Death I would imagine. I went through 5 of them, from the most basic one to the top-end Elite and every one in-between years ago but that's a different story altogether, lol. Don't you just love technology sometimes....? I vote that this is all FUBAR.
Oh, I have a Board Version 6 by the way.

[Q] HD2 turns off automatically!!!!!????

HELP!!!!!! My HD2 turns itself off automatically after about 15-30 minutes of running Android OS. I have HD2Froyo_V2.1.7z. Also installed HSPL3_PKG from XDA and Kumar's TMOUS C5 Premium V2.6. I solved my robot voice and no sound problem. Only thing left is getting it to actually stay on while running in Android. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi I have a similar problem. It happens only when I have the phone in my pocket.
My theory is that I press the shutdown button when held in the pocket and thereby turns off the phone. The best thing would have been if the feature was removed when it is in the locked position ... Do you think we have the same problem?
I'm running Duttys rom (v8) and radio 2.10.50.28_2 (HSPL 1.66)
No clue....?????
I am very new to the whole "hacking my phone" scene, if you will... I was pleased with myself for actually getting it to boot and run for a decent amount of time. My phone will just cut off (when im running Android OS), when it's in my hand, when im playing a game, when im doing just about anything in Android. It works perfectly fine in Windows, no probs what-so-ever. I had an issue with connecting to T-Mobile's 3G network, but i think i resolved that. For the most part everything works great, only prob is that the phone just resets on its own. Still very confused as to why..... HELP!!!!!!
I'm no expert on this either. Your problem sounded exactly like mine, just had to ask if it could be so in your case also.
You know what they're asking for technical support? Is the power cable in? Hehe, sometimes it can be very simple things that are wrong.
One thing that struck me was that perhaps you should look over the radio version. There are a few threads on XDA about different radio versions work with android.
Consider what I wrote at the beginning, I'm no expert
Alright. do this and it will work.
1. format your card with your phone to fat32. you need to do this. (yes again)
2. HPSL3 your phone, it seems that once you do it you wont have to do it again but this are the exact steps I did before getting the hd2 android for more than 72 hrs using 99% of the phone. (remember it is always better to have stock android)
3. I am using Chucky ROM but is HORRIBLE ugly and nasty. ROM your phone to Chucky rom or Miri Rom.
4. get Matt C Froyo version of android.
Install it. reboot. tap on CLRAD and then HRET and it will work.
I have an auto loader now it seems they all work but some are nicer. oh by the way you will use your SD card as it was th phones memory with this build, meaning the Windows version of the HD2 is safe for when Windows 7 gets a release and you decide to send to hell android as I will.
I was wondering if anyone found a solution yet for disabling all buttons except the unlock button.. this is the reason why I have been calling ppl without actually noticing I pressed keys while my phone was in my pocket. also it has shutdown few times. sucks because I miss calls that way.

I would really like to have a solution to this also. The problem is that you get an option to switch to airplane mode or turn off the phone when you long press endbutton. Even if it is locked. I want to see that when you are only in unlocked mode, the shutdown menu shows. I really hope someone fixes this.
thanks for your help, i tried doing this but that didnt help, i flashed my rom with the energy rom and the lastest mdeejay froyo 3.4. Is there a way i can fix the phone shutting down itself? to turn it back on, i have to take the batter out and turn it back on all the time.
any help pls?
Hi, i seem to have the same problem, android works perfectly when all of a sudden with no reason my phone reboots to winmo. And it has nothing to do with pressing buttons. I have it on a desk and it shuts down. I have noticed that it varies from build to build. Mmce v2.0 would cut down every few seconds. Mdeejay's builds were the most stable, but had no camera. The one I'm using right now "bangster's 1.5" with camera shuts down 1-2 times per day. I can live with that for now. PS: I would like however to thank all the developers for their hard work.

Have you tried running a non-undervolted kernel? Both Hastarin and Michyprima offer non-undervolted alternatives.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787588
Release r7.1 Alternative - as above but without Overclocking, Undervolting, or AXI. NOTE: requires nand_boot=0 in your startup.txt cmdline, see README.txt for details.

hd2 turns off I have a solution
first off this isnt a software issue at all. with much time devoted to figuring out the problem with my hd2, it randomly shuts off whenever it wants...well its simply a hardware issue. but nothing to has to do with overheating or anything like that. the battery pins are very flimsy and loose connection to the battery itself very easily. use a piece of paper and make sure its the length of the battery. and fold the paper to create a wedge in the top of the phone and the battery. place the paper wedge halfway in front of the battery as you are putting it in the phone and then gently force the battery into to place. this will create a secure connection between the battery and the pins. i promise it'll work...its just to keep the battery from bouncing and loosing connection.
its just a poorly designed battery casing not being snug enough to hold a connection with the battery. let me know if you are confused on how to do it or anything.
I'm having similar issues and I'm almost sure it's overheating.
Install Hastarin's 7.7alt version kernel which isn't overclocked on startup. This will make your phone a lot cooler after booting. Then install SetCPU and current Widget.
run SetCPU and set a profile to clock down the CPU (245-400mhz) when the Temp is above 98 degrees and to give you an Audible beep
run Current widget and pay attention to the temp. then run something like angry birds that will heat up your phone.
If it crashes at a certain heat, set SetCPU lower.
Another method to diagnose is to run Angry Birds like normal and see how long you can play before it crashes, then put some ice cubes in a double plastic bag and hold it against the lower back of the phone while you play again (after reboot of course). See if you can play longer.
I'm trying to figure out if the HD2 is still under warranty because this is a huge hassle.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with HTC TmoUS repair division and the phone is still under warranty and will be repaired at no cost except one way shipping. I'm going to stress test it in WinMo to make sure they will be able to replicate the problem and I'll ship it tomorrow. I just need to find something that's as CPU intensive as Android.
Does anybody have a solution to this? None of these answers work.
Automatically reboots
I have similar problems with my T-Mobile HD2; it was fine when I first got it (I lined up before the store opened on the day it came out) and am not running Android. It will periodically turn off and go back on again for no reason. I read somewhere that old SIM cards could be a problem and was wondering whether this was the issue as my SIM is more than 10 years old.

[Q] ViewPad 10s calibration issue

Last month, buy a ViewPad 10s. Great device. Thanks to this forum I can install the market and install many things. Until one day, after seeing a movie (Mobo player) I started missing the touch screen. I could not even unlock it!. I turned it off and set aside. The next day started as if nothing had happened. But with the passing of a few days, began to fail often, and not resolved by switching off. Until today that is totally screwed. Not react as it should, and I can not access at all to any of the functions. Here's a short video of what I'm telling you.
(search in youtube "viewpad 10s touch screen problem", the one from chgalvez user)
I've tried calibrate.ini, and almost all .apk calibration apps that are in the forum. I've try as last chance to upgrade with an official rom from viewsonic(1.09), but dont' work neither.
Anyway I think I can't prove anything more as the touchscreen almost no response at all.
Anyone have an idea if there a method to calibrate from the outside, with a USB cable or something?
thanks in advance and sorry for my english...
Wish I could help, but you are posting in the VPAD7 forum - the hardware & firmware are different - you need to go to the Viewsonic Gtablets forum (10" screen size) as folks over there should be better able to help you.
Assuming you are running unrooted device & stock/OEM ROM's - correct?
Best of luck !
Oh, OK, thanks! the device is rooted( z4root method, OK in 1st chance, no problems) and the Fw is an original upgrade from viewsonic....

I am having the same issue, this was on CM7 only flashed yesterday and then I tried to restore my backup rom and this has the same issue??
Hope someone can sort out the problem.
It sounds like a hardware problem in which you should;
A) buy a whole new screen and install it (they will give you the tools to take it apart)
B) Send it back to Motorola if you haven't voided your warranty by unlocking the phone
or
C) this is a long shot as I do think it is hardware related, you should try this fix just to be sure that it is a hardware problem. Mind you this will do nothing more than refresh the .pds file that affects the touchscreen. Touchscreen fix!
definetly sounds like a broken digitizer to me
I have taken my phone in for repair(Not a official MOTO repairer) and I just got a phone call, he believes it is a software issue? I am not convinced, because I have tried 4 different roms? He said he is going to format/wipe phone. I told him I have installed roms to replace software and I thought that this would wipe/replace software problem?
Anyway I guess, I will found out if it sorts out the random screen movement and widget press?

I got the phone back yesterday, all working ok.
I quickly broke it again by trying to install a stock rom and then root it, but it introduced the same random screen/widget issues(I tried wipe/format, but no good?). I then install 2 custom rom, CM7 and Aura and I still had problems, then I install HomeBase and problem has been sorted. Have no idea why it fixed the issue just happy it is fixed. Just to have refrain from installing other roms......for now anyway

I spoke to soon, last night it started the random screen judder and random widget pressing.....
I am not sure what is going on....I've had the phone for about 12 days now(second hand from eBay) and for the first 4-5 days the phone was fine. I then installed CM7 and for about 12-24 hours the phone was ok. Then the random screen/widget issues happened. Did many, many wipe's/formats of various roms and all these issue occurred more or less straight away.
Then I installed HomeBase and for about 6-8 hours, all was ok until lastnight. I guess it is either new motherboard time or new phone time....

Archos G9 101 250GB crashes

Hey!
One week ago, I bought my Archos G9 and since then my device crashes around 7-8 times a day. I have the newest firmware with root enabled on my device and disabled everything I could imagine (window animations, gps, etc.).
I have know idea why it crashes. There is no special pattern. One moment it crashes during browsing, the other while playing doodle jump, etc. Maybe it's because of the 512MB RAM? I already put a swap file on my device, but it didn't help at all...
hope you can help!
Ram has nothing to do with crashes. Try rooted firmware without custom busybox, download in Modified Init thread (custom busybox seems to be responsible for quite some problems)
tapatalked from Desire
thanks for reply!
My device is already running on this custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480906
EDIT: Seems like there is something wrong with the CPU... while performing the SetCPUs stresstest, my device crashed. Is it a general Archos G9 problem, or a specific problem with my device? I also noticed, that the back gets relativly hot... This happens only while i charge it.

When i first bought mine it also crashed every now and then and what i did was a full reset from the settings . Since then no more crashes on apps , so give it a try
If u dont need it, make sure bluetooth and gps are off, that always seemed to help me

I've had mine for 10 days now. I haven't rooted it yet - it's running the stock 3.2.80 firmware.
For the first 4 or 5 days, it seemed fairly stable - odd reboots, but nothing too bad.
Now, it won't stay running for more than 2 or 3 minutes from reboot before it freezes and I have to long-press the power button to shut it down. Sometimes it just reboots on it's own. But after each reboot, it stays running for less time than the last. If I let it lie down for a few hours, it will return to running for 2 or 3 minutes before freezing or rebooting again.
Mine also seems to get pretty warm on the back.
I've tried getting an RMA number from the Archos website, but that page doesn't work (shows a MySQL error!). Had to resort to emailing their support team a couple of days ago, but still waiting for any response.
I wish I had bought it from Play.com instead of direct from Archos - at least I could have returned it easier. All in all, I'm not very impressed so far.
BTW, I did do a full, factory reset, but it's made no difference.
Nothing worked, i already deactivated GPS and bluetooth and did a factory reset too.
I think I'll wait for the ICS update and hope, that archos will fix the problem... I don't think it's a hardware issue...
Try 3.2.79 version, IMO it works overall better than 3.2.80 but I can't test 3g stick. Wifi however behaved better on .79.
Note- you can't downgrade official firmware (AFAIK)
I believe there is a way of downgrading official firmware - I may give 3.2.79 a go.

[Q] [SGP 4.2] Random Shut Down

I've had the SGP 4.2 since August (North American version) and have become very fond of it. Although I've followed most of the dev areas, I have never rooted or installed any recovery, custom roms, etc...so it's on the stock Android 2.3.6 with 2.6.35.7 kernel and build number GINGERBREAD.UELD3. I have only installed things from the play store and amazon app store.
Sometime in the past week it has started shutting down randomly. Most times I notice when picking it up after hours of standby and it's fully off and need to boot up. A few times it has happened while in use - it just turns off. The battery level doesn't seem to matter, it can happen at 99%, 5%, and anywhere between.
Is there any way to tell if this is a hardware problem vs a software problem? Any other thoughts? I've not seen this problem in other threads, or at least not when running everything stock.
maybe a hardware issue.
see if samsung will fix/replace it

Sometime in the past week it has started shutting down randomly. Most times I notice when picking it up after hours of standby and it's fully off and need to boot up. A few times it has happened while in use - it just turns off. The battery level doesn't seem to matter, it can happen at 99%, 5%, and anywhere between.
Is there any way to tell if this is a hardware problem vs a software problem? Any other thoughts? I've not seen this problem in other threads, or at least not when running everything stock.

that was happening to me too. i just bought mine from best buy about 1.5 months ago. everything was fine, mine also wasnt ever rooted or flashed anything - just oem with playstore apps. then every now and then after about a month of having it, it would turn off and on by itself (only if it was idle though, without me touching it) its never happend to me while i was messin around with it. and then it started freezin up on me and gettin really laggy at times with certain programs but it was random and i couldnt reproduce it to try and pinpoint the program that was causing it. but then i read up on rooting it and the benefits of root and cwm and backingup everything and roms and since then, everythings perfect. better than new as a matter of fact. so in my opinion, you owe it to yourself to root your device so you can make changes to your lil buddy. i made sure i learned all about rooting and flashing and backups etc first though so i can do it safely. i mean, cmon i dont know about you but i paid alot of money for mine which is why i owed it to myself to 'safely' release the full potential of my device. :cyclops:
Totally agree that I want to start to release the full potential, thats' whay I've been poking aorund here for months (and tinering with my Acer tablet is getting old). My hesitation to start down that path is if there's a hardware issue I don't want to compound the inevitable probelms and end up with an out of warranty bricked device
Maybe I'll see what Samsung says. Like the previous poster - i can't directly replicate the issue so perhaps they won't replace, I'll see and update this post accordingly.

well one of the good things bout this forum is that it explains how to un-brick our devices if it happens. it was kind of intimidating at first for me too as this is the first android ive ever rooted and flashed diff roms. but as long as you make backups thru titanium and also a nand backup thru cwm and then use roms and kernals specifically made for your device that have been tried and tested and retried....then you really have nothing to worry about. and i also read somewhere that if you flash it yourself and somehow manage to brick your device, you can flash everything back to stock so your warranty wont be voided anymore - i could be wrong but im almost positive ive read that somewhere.
