[Q] Back button on stock browser doesnt work half the time! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On many websites the back button should take you to the previous page but it only reloads the current web page. As an example go to CNN.com non Mobile site and try to navigate back and forwarded. I find this same thing happening. On many websites. Is this for real? This is basic web browsing here! Why is this $600.00 super tablet not able to navigate websites better than my phone?
Thanks for any answers to this issue.

The back button generally doesn't function correctly when the page is flash intensive.

Will this be fixed and why would this be the case? It really annoying.

Does it work on XDA for you?

mine does that too. Xda is a site this often happens to me.

I had to change XDA to classic and now it works. Sad that this browser can't handle this basic function. I hope the soon to be released update fixes the browser issues and typing lag.

Same here. Its quite annoying

I have had this happen but only on the xda forums. It is comical how bad the xda forums are on an android device:
- can't use search
- can't use back button
- horrible scrolling lag
I guess they don't fix it because they want us to get the xda app?

Ok this is odd but it never worked on XDA for me. Then I reflashed back to stock Rom and pershoot's kernel and now back button is working perfectly. Works everytime on XDA. Not sure what did the trick but im not complaining

Mine does not work with [Odin]Stock EH06 Deodexed with CWM 3.1.0.1/Root/Busybox 1.19/Working Browser. In the browser that is. It appears to crash the browser. I would post this in the appropriate forum, however I have not made enough filler posts to.

Mine works just fine. Rooted, stock Verizon LTE 10.1. I usually use Dolphin Browser, but just tried my stock one and went through a bunch of cnn pages and xda pages... then went back, no problem.

I've narrowed this issue down to either the mod that removes ads from the browser or the UAString mod. Went back to stock deodexed ME and back button works fine.

[Q] Surfing web/gtablet problem

I just bought a new gtablet thats running the stock 3588 software. All seems to be fine except when I surf the web. While doing so, most of the time the gtablet will switch back to the home screen resulting with me having to go back to the web again, it does the same thing using a different browser also.
I really don't want to try one of the different mods yet, but if that is what it takes, I might have to.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem.
Sounds like there could be some sort of app interaction/interference going on. You may have something running in the background that is doing it. Its a place to start. Have you installed flash?
May sound silly, but are you inadvertantly hitting the "Home" button while swiping?

Glad you said it, lol! Actually that was my first thought but didn't want so sound rude I remember getting used to the sensitivity of the buttons when I got my tab. That was the reason I ended up using button remapper and button saver. The button remapper let me map the soft buttons to be up, down, left, right. It helps a lot when surfing the net, I no longer have to zoom in to select a link. Button saver makes a small on-screen tab that when pressed brings up search, home, menu and back buttons on the screen. It works awesome and I have not accidentally hit the home button in the middle of doing anything since setting this up. This is also a great setup for night use.

This was happening to me too. I got my gtablet 2 weeks ago and got the update (it was unusable until the update) and it seemed a lot more stable. However, when I surfed the web after a while it dropped back to the home page. Ended up flashing to TNT 5 and its been totally stable ever since (I was nervous about doing it as I'm a noob at all this but it was painless if you follow instructions).
I was wondering if it had something to do with the content of the page (flash or something) but decided to just go with the much better ROM. Not looked back since.
It continues to do it even if I have it laying flat on a table and making sure that I don't hit any of the side buttons.
Yes, I do have "Flash" installed.
Probably the Flash 10.1 causing this... Get 10.2. If you don't have access to the android market you can also get it from freewarelovers

Hi,
Is this using the default browser? That (crashing to homescreen) was a fairly common problem, but I assumed that it might have been fixed by now. Anyway, if you are using the default browser, I suggest you try Xscope or Dolphin. I've been using the former since last Dec, and rarely see that crashing. You should be able to get them on market, or the Xscope dev has a download on his website. Been using both with Flash.
mine has been doing that with the 10.1 flash. Since I cant access android market, I cant download 10.2 straight to the tablet. The market keeps saying I dont have an android device linked to the account
using freewarelovers to DL 10.2. will see if this fixes it
works
If you can use other browsers on the stock firmware I highly suggest Opera Mobile. It has hardware acceleration so it scrolls and zooms smoother than the others, too. I'ts my favorite so far. Makes the web experience on the tab a lot better.
Well, I uninstalled Flash 10.1 and I think that it has fixed my browser problems. Thanks for all your help.

Awesome! If you still want flash just hop over to freewarelovers [dot] com, and flash 10.2 is right on the homepage. It's pretty flawlessly, especially compared to 10.1.

[Q] Multitasking question

Hi all,
I'm coming from a Galaxy S and considering a S2, i'm pretty happy with everything apart from what i imagine is the low Ram.
On the S i find that if i open the browser, start using it, press the home screen, open something else, i sometimes go back and find the browser has to load again.
Wouldn't normally be an issue if i could get a fast reliable connection in London, does the S2 still have this issue or does the extra Ram solve this?
Thanks
Phil
I don't know about the gs1 as I never had one but gs2 has real multitasking (as long as u press home before going to the next app and not the 'back' button)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
yes since the gs2 has 1gig of ram, it can keep more programmes open before androids built in task killer starts killing tasks, therefore you can be reading somthing, hit the home button, go into a few different apps, then go back into the web page and it will still be loaded.
Thanks all, not normally a problem but what i do sometimes in load a web page on the tube while i have a decent connection to read when the connection goes, do something else then come back and find its having to reload
Might give orange a call.

As an temporary solution u can try the app called "Read it later" from android market. I liked that app a lot as it makes a great way to read web pages later offline.
Link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ideashower.readitlater.free
There is pro version too.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Do buy SGS2, i can have browser, a download, a game and gtalk running together (+background processes) and it wont lag at all.

What's with this phone and Web browsing?

Lots of times i will press on a link and nothing will happen.. Ill press on it like 20 times and nothing will happen... Then like 10 - 20 seconds later, it'll finally register and load the new page.
That and lots of times i will press on something and it'll think i selected a link next to it and go to that instead.
This happens regardless of what browser i use.
For what its worth, my phone doesn't do that and I web browse a lot. Zoom in before you click a link if that helps.

Oddly it happens more often zoomed in then out.
Sounds like a messed up server.
As far as I can remember I have not had a browser do that. I use the stock browser and Opera Mobile.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1
I also do not have that issue, I switched to Opera browser though cause I found the stock one slow!
Cause Android.
I have had to get used to browsing, what I find is that you have to be decisive. If you touch the screen a lot you get unintended results. When scrolling make long smooth strokes. Zoom in before selecting links, then touch links for a second to make sure they highlight.

Why do web browsers always crash on this tablet?

Ever since Honeycomb, the absolute biggest problem I've had with this tablet is the browser. It doesn't freaking stay open. No matter what browser I use, no matter if I'm running Honeycomb, ICS or Jellybean, the browser always crashes. And it's not a typical FC either; It just closes right back to Launcher.
I've been hearing that it's caused by some null pointer exception in JavaScript; But you mean to tell me between Android 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 4.0 - 4.0.4 and 4.1, 4.1.1, that this issue STILL isn't resolved? Not to mention, it only happens on tablets (Tegra 2 issue? Xoom has the same issue).
For me, it most notably happens when I'm browsing a Twitter page. In the past minute alone, I've had browser crash on my SIX times trying to load a page on Twitter. Let's make that 7 now.
So what the hell really causes this, and why won't it go away? My Sensation and myTouch 4G can browse just fine, and this temporary Galaxy S III works perfectly too, so what's with the tablet?
EDIT: Disabled JavaScript and set plugins to ondemand. Same damn result.
I've used the stock browser, Dolphin, Chrome, and Skyfire and none of them have ever crashed on me. Ever. Sounds like there is either something defective about your device perhaps your internet connection. A factory reset might help, as might going into applications, finding the Google framework and clearing data. Do the same for your browsers as well.
That's funny, I've noticed just the same thing. Browsers work terribly on this tablet.
With me, they only do crash sometimes – a lot more than on my HTC phone, though. But using browsers is a real pain, as they all feel kinda buggy, and I don't think it's their fault, since they all show the same "bugs". They're all kinda laggy. I've updated to ICS today and I was crying in emotion for being able to finally download Chrome, as it's the most stable one I've ever used in my phone, but I was disappointed when I noticed it too felt quite laggy. I'd rather go home and turn my Mac on than to struggle with web browsing on this tablet, honestly. I've tried many browsers –*stock, Dolphin, Boat, that other one with green icon, and also Skyfire or something.
If anyone has a better thing, or a solution, or anything, I bet there are many desperate people that would die to hear it.
(I know I sound more dramatic than I should, but let's face it, web browsing sucks in this device.)
I've never had any problem web browsing on my Tab. None. I'm not rooted, maybe that's why, or maybe it has to do with the sites you visit. Dunno.
On my tab with HC 3.2, the stock browser would also just disappear to the home screen, but not all that often.
I flashed to ICS, and the stock browser got a bit quirky. The address bar would no longer hide when I scrolled down
on a web page. Would stutter as if it was trying to hide but wouldn't.
Installed Dolphin and it worked fine.
I went back to HC 3.2 (had some other issues besides the browser) and so far the stock browser is working fine.

Dolphin does the same thing though, just a lot less frequently. Motorola Xoom users in a thread from a year ago reported this same problem (in a filled up 14 page thread), and several of users report the same exact issue. I'm gonna poll some more Tegra 2 sections and see if they suffer from the same thing but it looks like this is just another issue with this ****ty SoC, like the portrait mode lag.

Come on dude, I'd have to be rooted to be running Jellybean. And as everyone else has shown, it does seem to vary by website. Full pages on twitter ALWAYS crash, (they work once in a blue moon). Other times browser crashes when browser feels like it hasn't crashed in a while. I could get through a day perfectly, then bam, crash.
I'm not a dude.
I've never had a problem with any of the browsers I've tried, I think maybe you have a faulty tablet.

Yes Google.ca. The browser just shut down without a force close notice and opens blank. Plus it becomes non responsive, on pages that have a lot of javascript.

That specifically happens the second time. On the first crash, I'd relaunch and it would reload my pages, but 99/100 times it would crash seconds afterward. Upon opening it again, i get one tab with the Google homepage.

I think it's all about memory management, I cant tell about HC 'cause I barely used it, but JB is still very experimental.

I'm biased because I've never had any problems with my browser crashing? Whatever. I also never "went crazy" over anything. All you do is complain and complain. Why not just get an iPad and move on?
I have tried several browsers also, and for me I really only have problems with chrome freezing (not force closing). It seems to be random, but happens more frequently when opening new tabs. However, the stock browser on the same sites seems to work every time. My guess is that it may be due to timeouts on the network connection or possibly memory related. And, it seems to be random... I may go a day without a freeze, then have two back to back freezes. Oh tegra2, why don't you behave?
Hey guys,
It's been almost a week since I flashed the stock ICS and installed Chrome. So far so good, no complaints. I'm really relieved, as I was almost giving up. Give it a try

Chrome is the way to go. The ability to create an account and sync all relevant browser data to your devices via the cloud - why hasn't anyone thought of this before? So obvious and useful.
I also strongly recommend trying out Boat Browser, which is highly underrated. Smoother and smarter layout than Dolphin and the best alternative to Chrome, IMO.

Chrome acts really weird on JB. I'm still running pershoot's 8/4 build but I'll be updating and trying out Chrome again. Last time I tried it I would always get a white page while switching tabs, and scrolling was odd. Browser does a much better job but Chrome has too much nice functionality lol

I doubt it's memory relate, it happens a lot with 1 tab open, and with a full Gig of RAM, browsing should be painless when it comes to memory management, not to mention, but Android's memory management scheme is the most beautiful thing I've seen. Tabs and apps actually know how to stay open, and Android knows what to close. Works a lot better than any tablet I've used, even better than crapple's iPad.

I'm using 'Maxthon Web Browser for Tablet'~ Quite fast for me.
i like stock browser but what i don't like its slow unstable.
Heck my tablet shutdown usualy like once a day if unlucky and i'm not even sure what the cause is.
I've tried out several browsers myself ..
Actually I've installed chrome beta, UC browser HD, Stock and Opera.
The list changes times to times, but only one (3rd party) stays installed OPERA.
For me it's actually the best one, specially in two aspect: downloads management and web page support (last experience was by managing drop box list in a train company website...)
Also try Puffin Browser. Its pretty cool on tab s

Thanks for posting the suggestion. I installed UC HD last night and gave it a test spin for several minutes. So far I do like it better than stock or Dolphin or Maxthon (both frequently shut down and dump me back to the tablet desktop). So far UC HD seems to perform well with no random crashing. Time will tell, >Maxthon seemed stable for awhile also. The one thing I do like very much about UC HD is the scrolling arrows in the lower right corner of the screen. I think that really helps navigating the web page and reduces the tendency for false finger presses on links you didn't mean to "click" on.
Thanks again :good:
2/4/2013-Thought I would update with my experience so far with UC Browser. Since posting the above I have used UC HD for browsing the web, checking e-mail and just general usage. Initially, all seemed great with no problems until the last two days or so. Unfortunately, the browser will close with a message apologizing for the app quitting and gives option to restart the browser or cancel. Once this happens every attempt will recreate the same message. The first time this happened I shutdown the tablet, after clearing the browser cache and history and restarted the tablet. This seemed to take care of the problem for awhile but eventually it begin crashing every time I opened the browser. I have discovered that if I leave it alone for an undetermined amount of time it seems to sort itself out and will begin working properly again, at least for awhile. Seems to be random and not associated with a particular site, it happens right away when opening the app. Hope this gets corrected in a future update. I really like using the browser.
Stock browser is more stablet than firefox, i have the two, but firefox give crash all time

I've tried all of mentioned in this thread. Finally I found one that is perfect for me. It's xScope Browser.
It's not free, but definitely worth the money.
i really like Boat Browser.. I always have more than 10 tabs open and only boat browser and opera can keep on memory all the tabs that i want, and i can see any tabs that I need, when i want to.. With Chrome and the others, i can have a lot of tabs too, but when i wanna see some tab.. they have to render all over again and is just a waste of time..
I use Firefox because Adblock Plus.
