Superuser is gone! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using BAMF and I just noticed superuser is gone. I tried granting root access to Titan backup and it doesn't work.. wtf? Any help would be awesome

Try manually flashing the 2.3.6.3efgh Superuser zip from recovery.
You can find it here http://goo.gl/VjOjR

Thanks but that still didn't work.. now what

Honestly, that should have worked. Are you sure it flashed (said successful in recovery)? I'm not personally familiar with BAMF so I don't know if they have some custom way of hiding it or anything.
It's not listed in the drawer correct?
Is it listed under Manage Applications (All)? If so, force stop and clear its data.
Is Su.apk in /system/app and su in /system/xbin?
There was a signature problem around the time 2.1 was first released where some people lost superuser and had to flash 2.0.3 but honestly, that should be fixed now so it shouldn't be that unless there's something you may have done that you didn't mention. I suppose if it comes down to it you could try some older versions of Superuser.
Other than that, I'm not sure how you'd get it back without restoring a nandroid or reflashing the rom but flashing the su zip should have accomplished that.
Edit:
Just thought...check to see if Superuser shows up in your Market and will let you install. If su is already installed and just broken, that may fix it. Worth a shot anyway.

Wow. I feel dumb. I got it fixed. I just went in with root explorer and deleted the superuser file first. Then flash the file you sent me and boom. Worked. Thank you very much for your time

[HELP] Can't remove root after update.

So today was fun, after seeing mixed reports of people downloading and successfully installing the Verizon update, I tried.
It worked, then my phone went into a reboot/recovery loop, then just stopped loading. I did a factory wipe restore in the recovery menu, then did a factory data reset in the setting menu.
Reloaded all my crap back on, and now here comes the issue. Superuser still shows in the menu, but when i try to remove the files via the ABD commands, I can't, I get permission denied.
I can't get Root Explorer to work because I've obviously not rooted anymore.
So what are my options, because my phone isn't rooted, even though the root files are still in place and I can't update and/or modify those.
Thanks in advance.
Im gonna take a stab at this because im still a n00b myself on this android stuff, but i had similar problem with wireless tether.
When you updated it removed root access, but not any programs(hence you have no permissions, but still su program), so what your probably gonna have to do re-root the same way you did earlier, I actually had to re-root twice in order to get root access, because the first time it hung. Now after you get root access, you should be able to remove root through the command.
Hope this helps

Have you tried just deleting the files from your memory card? I unrooted once and still had the SU app showing in my app drawer. I deleted it from memory card and it dissappeared. I think it was like 4 or 5 files just delete them and reroot.
Tried it. Don't have permission to overwrite the existing files :/

FIXED!
So I had previously tried to re-apply the root with no success, but for whatever reason, decided to do it one more time, and it worked!
Follow this again if you did it this way before.

Ok, I did this and it fixed EVERYTHING! I had tried a couple of times to re-do the "one click" method. Nothing worked... Now I have FULL root with FULL permissions!
THANK YOU!!
Edit: BTW, this is AFTER I did the FULL vzw update!

[Q] Adrynalyn V.2 No RM or SU

I updated to Andrynalyn's V2 ROM yesterday, I was hoping it would solve the issue of SU crashing. it did not. Now SU is Force Closing, and I can't use Titanium Backup to restore or ROM manager to restore to previous versions. ROM M just hangs. I have root, S-off, but can't get SU permissions for apps. Any suggestions on how to flash back to previous ROMS or at this point stock root would be fine thanks. Also, any body else having trouble with tethering? probably related to lack of SU permissions.
Thanks.

What rom are you running? Did you apply rmk's su patch?
@jmiller
I am running Adrynlyne's first debloated ROM, i'm not sure what it's called. I rooted fairly quickly and flashed the ROM and then haven't updated to anything newer, just wanted better battery life and to lose crapware.
I just saw the rmk's su patch today, I downloaded the .zip and tried to install via Rom Manager, but ROM keeps force closing and not loading due to Superuser not working properly, I think. essentially I can't get the phone to install the .zip from ROM manager. I'm a n00b, and thought about using adb to push the .zip and load it that way, but I'm not sure of the commands I need.
Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks.

This prob needs to be posted under adrynalyn's thread so that he will see it. I would prob start over with rooting again though, it sounds like it did not root properly.

Miui 1.9.2.3- No Root!

Ok, I had been running miui v1.9.3.0 but it had too many glitches and bugs, so I downgraded to v1.9.2.3 and soon realized that titanium backup no longer works, due to no root access. I've gone into superuser and turned on the superuser permissions, i've tried reflashing, rebooting, using Odin and going back to stock and reflashing... everything! But whenever I use titanium backup, "no root access"! What happened?! Please, someone help...

remove everything and anything that relates to superuser. use rootexplorer or something and search it, and then remove everything, and then odin.
Then root using superoneclick or something like that.
That may do the trick.
maybe you had like a bad binary or something? idk
Can you tell me the directories to look for?

I honestly don't know either, i'd just search the whole phone. Remove anything with superuser on it.

Grrrr... I still can't find any SU related files and folders and I have a question. Shouldn't using Odin to go back to stock fix this issue? I've repeatedly flashed back to stock in hopes of resolving this issue but none of my attempts worked...

ADDITIONAL INFO: Also, the reason for this issue could be because I tried to update superuser with an app in the market and another bit of info is that although Titanium Backup and some other root apps don't work, SetCPU and a few other root apps do work. So I'm in a vey confusing situation.

Oh...
Uhm, a question, the stock odin files that you have, are they TOTAL stock? like no root? or is it one of the rooted ones?
Can you go back into the market, go into superuser, and try to uninstall it? or go into settings>applications> and then go into superuser and it should say like undo update or something? Maybe those can fix?
Has titanium backup been allowed superuser before? Has SetCPU been allowed superuser before? If it has been done before, that may be why some work and some don't.
Yes, they should be totally stock. I downloaded them from "s15274n". And also, I'm not sure if you're familiar with MIUI but it has its own version of superuser that comes with it that's different from the one downloaded from the market... So this is a very confusing problem... Also, Titanium did work before and I never had issues until I tried updating the SU bianary and busybox. It seems as if odin isn't cleaning up everything, but I'm not sure... I made a big mistake thinking that the market SU app could update MIUI's SU bianary and now I can't seem to truly start from scratch...
This is a feature, I assume, as MIUI will soon be preinstalled on phones (MI-One). All you need to do is go into the Super User app after flashing MIUI, hit menu -> settings (I think) and check to enable root.
No ODIN, no reflash, just that. It's not just the Vibrant, and I think it's the new norm for MIUI.
That's the thing though, I've already turned on superuser in it's settings. I'm not sure what to do...

Then that's just weird. Try reverting a few weeks? I understand the last 2-3 weeks has been pretty bad.
uninstall Titanium Backup and Reinstall Via Market. Titanium can bug out when you restore it via backup or when you try using it after a OS update
also verify your Superuser App (the one thats preinstalled in Miui) Has both "Manage Permissions, and Root Permissions" Enabled

he prob. Forgot to enable root permissions.
Actually, I did have root permissions enabled. But when I restored titanium and other root apps with miui's built in backup/restore utility I guess it just made them glitchy. Uninstalling and reinstalling all the apps that need root solved the problem. Thanks "boystuff"!

[Q] Titanium Backup not working on ICSSGS RC4.2

I just installed ICSSGS RC4.2 but I seem to have partial root access, or just have an issue with Titanium Backup. When I start Titanium Backup, it gives an error that it could not acquire root privileges. I checked, and I do have the superuser app, so it seems that I should have root access. I installed File Manager and I am able to browse the root directory and open files in the root directory (such as boot.txt). I don't know if this is a valid test for root access though. I don't know what Titanium is trying to do when it determines that it does not have root access. When I check Superuser, it does not have any apps listed. When I check preferences, it is set to prompt me when an app asks for root access.
Here is how I ended up on ICSSGS RC4.2:
- I was running Bionix for the past several months and definitely was rooted at that point!
- I ODIN'd to stock
- I installed CM7
- I then installed Passion ICS and was definitely rooted at that point
- I decided to try ICSSGS at that point so I did a wipe data, wipe cache, dalvik cache wipe and then installed ICSSGS
- I rebooted and played around in ICSSGS for a while but never tried Titanium yet. I then flashed ICS_Kiss_v5.1_CWM.zip kernel and ICS_GPS_FILES.TEST2.zip based on several posts in the ICSSGS topic in the developers forum to get GPS working.
- Now I have tried Titanium backup for the first time and am getting the root issue
I'm thinking that doing something like re-rooting with SuperOneClick is probably not a good idea. I suppose, it wouldn't hurt to flash a different kernel and see what I have, but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my problem. I'd like to avoid a complete reinstall if possible since I have already spent time customizing things after finding that I like this ROM. I have never flashed the same ROM right on top of the existing one, so I'm not sure if the install script would end up wiping out my installed apps and app/system settings.

TI has been acting funny for me as well.Recently I flashed a theme including apps and the market updater apk updated my market,So I tried freezing that app and said it did it but it did not.I had to rename the app .bak ...You might have to wipe dalvik and cache only and reflash 4.2..It wont wipe your rom settings and installed app, just the system apps
I reflashed 4.2 and it started working again (Titanium was able to get root access). I flashed KISS 5.1 and it broke again. After experimenting, it breaks with Kiss 4.1 and SubZero 1.0.1 kernels too. Once it breaks, I tried to update the SU Binary through the superuser app, and that fails on the gaining root access step too.
I think I'll give Euphoria a try next.

Can't get root access

Hey everyone. I seem to be in a little trouble here.
I had rooted my phone a while ago. I odexed some apps, superuser included. Now, superuser started crashing on me randomly. I tried unrooting and rooting again. But it seems like the odex file is causing issues, not letting superuser work it's magic.
I can uninstall any apps, even system ones via flashtool. But I can't reinstall apps that had gotten odexed. And they aren't working properly, just like superuser. I can't seem to think of a way to delete the odex file, since to get root I need to delete the odex file.
Is there any way for me to maybe wipe my system? Or just delete that odex file? I don't have CWM installed. I somehow remember reading of installing CWM without root, but I'm not so sure anymore.
Full wipe, clearing, deleting. Anything you've got to offer would be nice. Anything that works.
EDIT: Also, I don't have access to the Google Play store app. That crashed too.

Tried that. Didn't help. Just get's rid of the installation of non sytem apps. Everything else is pretty much intact.
I even tried installing another superuser. Didn't work either.
In fact, flashtool says root access exists. While other apps like android commander and qtadb don't seem to think so.
EDIT: Solved, thanks. What I initially had was only the kernel. Wiped and flashed. Back to normal now. Thanks.
