3D downgrade? - HTC EVO 3D

Simple question. How many of you are truly disappointed in the EVO 3D and consider it a downgrade to the original EVO? Why?
Edit:I'm not one of the people who think it is a downgrade. I have seen several people say it and I wanted to know why they think so.

I'm very disapointed in the camera, (locking up, low light pics, missing features) force closes, and volume. I'd say its a downgrade as it stands right now.

It does kind of suck. I mean nothing that it does poorly, just not worth the money. It has almost no features over the Evo 4G and get much worse battery life. That and the charging port is in a stupid location. No HDMI meow, kind of. 4GB storage, what a laughable and BS spec. I do LOVe me some camera button though!

complete downgrade! more ram. twice the CPU power (in one core alone) better Res screen, 3d feature, slimmer, more battery life..... complete downgrade /sarcasm

+1 and a +lol to that

The EVO 3d is better than my OG EVO in every way possible.

Wow, I bet you think the EVO was a downgrade from the hero too.

USB port location blows. Aspect ratio blows. Stuck with Sense, which blows. Performance and battery life on par with my modded EVO4G, which was great on the 4G, but, for a new $700 phone blows...(I only paid $24)...The camera is better than the 4G, but still not stellar. 720p framerate still blows, though the audio is way better and in stereo...
But on the plus side? Now I have 2 cameras I'll never use on my phone, lockscreen is rad, and 3D headaches! Camera button is boss tho.
lol, srsly I love the phone...I can live with the charging port and I'll come to terms with the horrible aspect ratio thanks to the killer resolution...though that is what I hate the most.

Interesting but I have to disagree with everything you posted here, except the camera button. I'm slightly bias because mine only cost me $50, but I still would have paid $200 for it. No features over the Evo 4G? Really?

Not to mention upgraded wireless capabilities. The charging port location is subjective. Idk what "No HDMI meow" means but the charging port is compatible with an MHL adapter. And regardless of what is adverstised for the storage (that's another debate) what we actually get to use stock is about double what we got from the Evo 4G stock...

To all you clowns saying the camera is a downgrade from the 4g, take it up with this guy.

Nah...something is wrong with his 4G. To be fair, so long as the lighting was good (or really good) my 4G took awesome pics. I understand the physics behind it so low-light pics looking like poo never really bothered me...
But, yeah, dude needs to wipe the 4G's lense...I've seen sharper pictures taken from inside a foggy otterbox defender.

I suggest returning your phone then, the performance is significantly better than the EVO 4G. I have the 3D and the 4G and the 3D is way better, especially with the battery. My dad has a EVO 3D and the thing lasts him all day with just browsing the internet and checking emails... I don't know how you are experiencing bad battery because mine has been awesome compared to my EVO 4G. If people are going to complain so much about the phone, then return it! Were all still under the 30 day return policy.
I'm tired of seeing these stupid complaints... Especially when people go out of their way to make a thread about it...

**IF**, by some miracle, HTC unlocks the bootloader....

... would this still be the phone to get over the SGSII? I'm not talking about sense vs touchwiz, i'm talking about raw power. How would the two phones compare running a stable nearly identical CM7? Can anyone (NO BIAS please) explain to me which phone has better capabilities?
I know I'm getting WAYY ahead of myself, but i'm still deciding IF HTC responded to their customers and unlocked the bootloader if I would get the EVO 3D or still wait for the SGSII, considering I'm sticking with either one for the next two years.
I've heard people say the SGSII has better raw power-- on the SGSII forum
I've also heard the some of you on this forum say the EVO 3D is better. Obviously, there is some bias involved and one phone is more powerful than the other.
I actually have some hope that HTC might do something about the bootloader. If this is the case, I have a really tough decision on which phone to still get. As for now, if the bootloader remains unlocked, its SGSII all the way

seriously why does it even matter? Say one phone is faster than the other. The specs are so close together that any speed difference would barley even be noticeable on a side by side. The difference would be nothing if you didn't have both phones in hand.
Really I think the biggest difference would be the UI, so debate sense vs touchwiz
Why does it matter what phone is faster?? Well thats a stupid question

No, it's a valid question and jessejames makes a very good point ... the specs are so close that any speed difference would be negligible from a user standpoint, especially if you're not actually doing a side-by-side comparison.
I'd even go so far as to say that the effective data rate differences between the various 4G transmission standards will have significantly more of an effect on apparent phone response times in many applications than any actual benchmark differences between the two phones.
I feel like the EVO 3d isn't much of an improvement over the EVO. Downgrade in camera department and no full 1080p recording. And still skimping on internal storage...not sure if the 3d screen is worth losing those other features....
I think ima wait for the sgs2 since the EVO 3d is the same as my EVO with a 3d screen and slightly better performance
After seeing the sgs2 vs HTC sensation it makes me wonder about the snapdragon processor....it doesn't compare in those performance test

Bump the processing power from 1Ghz to 1.2Ghz then double it, double the ram, bump the resolution to qHD, shoot 1080p in 2D, 720p in 3D, and that's not much of an upgrade from the original EVO?

I do believe you are just misinformed. The EVO is the Sensation just with 3d added. They both have a SLCD qhd display. Also, just because the Sensation's camera is 8mp does not mean it is better. The EVO is 8mp and the camera is much worse then many other phones that are 5mp.
You need to do some more research as far as MP's are concerned as well as the comparing the Sensation to the EVO 3d.
I believe I was very nice with my response. Other's might not be this kind to you. lol

Your basing camera quality on MPs. That's your first mistake, HTC has stated the camera on the E3D is much improved over the original evo. Why? Better lens, hardware, etc. MPs don't matter as much as you would like to believe. The 5MP camera on the iPhone is a perfect example. More on board storage would be nice but with 32GB mSD available and 64GB on the way I'm not too worried about it. Storage has never been an issue for me in the past and it won't be in the future.
Tapa tapa tapa
OP, its going to come down to personal preference. Both of these phones have monstrous specs and will perform quote similarly. They both have rock star CPUs and GPUs and will be very closely matched in performance.

If you are even familiar with the actual specs--which it sounds like you definitely are not--then you have absolutely no understanding of what they mean.
This phone is a beast. Any performance difference between the two will be negligible bone-stock and even more negligible modded to the teeth.
Tell us, what did they "skimp out" on? The asynchronous dual core 1.2gHz cpu? The kick-ass new adreno gpu? the qHD screen that just so happens to also do 3D? A GIGABYTE of ram? Over a certain amount internal storage means absolutely nothing to anybody who knows better, and Evo3D is far past this amount.
Not to mention HTC build quality and dev community (now with official mfgr support). I would accuse you of holding specs in too high a regard over other more important things...but I don't think you even understand the specs enough to be doing that.
Someone gave you some koolaide and you drank it. You love koolaide.

This is yet another portion of your mis-information. You realize the two screens have differing resolutions, correct? Not a little difference either, but a vast 35% pixel difference. The Adreno 220 is I believe more powerful then the SGS2's gpu, but is also doing 35% more work with the higher pixel count that qHD brings to the table.
Also, pure processing tests did not show the sensation as weaker, it got what, 46MFLOPS? Not to mention the dual core is much more efficient on battery life then the tegra2 was.
Your points are all invalid as you simply don't include all the variables that create the differences.
Edit: I want to add my post was not meant as a defense of the E3D, as I'm personally seriously considering the SGS2 solely for its slenderness. But when you see posts that full of one sided information and wrong conclusions it's only natural to respond.

Sorry...but just not that impressed

I know I'll get a bunch of flamers for this and that's to be expected but after having this phone for a lil over a week now, I'm just not as impressed as I thought I would be. Idk, maybe not being able to flash ROMS & do some of the same things I could with my Evo & Epic, but this phone isn't all that mind blowing like I thought it would be. It's defitinely faster/quicker, I can't take that away from it, but thats about it. The screen difference isn't all that noticibale when compared to the OG Evo and still not as crisp or vibrant as the Epic imo. The camera is a improvement but also not by much. 3D is a fad, much like 3D TV's are. I think a Retina-like screen would have been a better feature. The new Sense is nice but it didn't add much over the previous one, plus we had it on the OG Evo. I'll probably keep it anyway and just upgrade my Epic to the GSII or Nexus Prime if they come to Sprint, but just wanted to see if there is anybody else out there who feel like I do.

To each their own - I for one love it, and am VERY happy that I ditched that Damn iPhone for the Droid (have a Xoom as well). Im not really sure I see the need to post that you dont like the phone, like anything in the world - Some people will like it and some wont. You cant argue the overall power of this phone, the 3D is cool - but this phone is worth it if you dont use it for 3D at all.... My Wife loves her too - So much that shes going make me live with the damn Sprint Data speeds, she refused to take her 3D back.
You went from an already fast phone, to a dual core version of the same phone with added RAM and a 3D capable screen (in a nutshell). You wouldn't see a major difference. It's like going from a 2 GHz PC to a 3 GHz PC. Sure you have two cores available now, but for your standard functionality, you won't see much of a change. And comparing it to a super AMOLED screen, well, the phone's specs were published beforehand. I never quite expected it to be as crisp as my Wife's Epic, but I love it anyhow.
For me, buying this phone was a hardware upgrade. 3D is a nice extra. Also, I sold my Evo just prior to launch of the 3D for more than enough to buy the phone w/accessories, so why not?
Now, if you were coming from a Hero or something of that nature, then of course the upgrade would be night and day.
I'm very impressed. But I'm coming from a Hero that I hated from day 1, not an EVO 4G. I agree that 3D still seems gimmicky and hurts my eyes after a while but I'm even slowly starting to like it more too.
I've had over 5 single core 1ghz phones
Two of whitch had AMOLED screens
(vibrant and nexus s) and I don't like the fake "vibrant" colors that LED screens have..
And a dual core. (G2X)
I agree with not "feeling" the power for the extra core.. but I also disagree because its the future... Ice cream in Q4 baby!

I understand the OP. I'm 50/50 whether I keep it or return for SGS2. It's going to sit deactivated until I decide. My fully rooted OG EVO with a custom ROM is preferable to the 3D right now.
But yeah, for months of build up it was kind of a let down from the OG EVO although I think that's our fault. It's very relative. I was hoping for a great camera and now I don't trust HTC...meh.
I'm really liking this phone. The battery life is good, the display is nice, as great horsepower. I get this strange popping every once and awhile when using the headphone jack... But other than that, I'm liking things in HTC Country. I stayed in Samsungville for over a year, I'm not going back for even a more powerful phone.
I agree with the OP. My OG was amazing. The resolution on the Inspire or EVO may be less but the screens are better on the eyes when it comes to the displaysize. The 3D is terrible. Maybe they should call it holographic because it reminds me of old holographic baseball cards. It's quick but, so was my CM7 EVO. Sense 3.0 is meh, I enjoy the new lockscreen widgets. Although I do enjoy the bloatware removal, better battery life, and task manager. I'm debating an SGS2 for a change.

The 3d doesn't look like a hologram unless you move your display to a different angle..
It's a "glasses off 3d" technology If you knew anything about 3d you would know that you need 3 view points to produce and view 3d in the proper form it was intended...

faster than most
Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing the phone in any way. It's definitely faster and a nice upgrade from my OG Evo. I guess its like somebody else posted, I let my expectations get the better of me. The speed is undeniable, granted I never tried CM or any of the other AOSP ROMS long enough to compare speed/quickness but Myn's, Virus' & Mik's ROMS were pretty fast to me. The 3D is ok if your into that stuff but its a gimmick at best. I own a 3D TV & maybe have watch 2 or 3 movies in 3D. Got it because of the clarity & beauty of the LED. 3D was a extra. Now if they had added a Retnia or comparable screen then we would have something to talk about but this screen isn't any noticeably better than the screen on the OG Evo. Battery life is better than the OG Evo had at its launch but once I got my 3500 Seidio & SBC kernel, battery life didn't matter. I got 2 days on a single charge. Can't really bring Sense into it because we have Sense 3 on the OG Evo also. I guess maybe once we get full root & S-Off and can start really unlocking what the phone can do, my opinion will change but right now its not any better, actually below the OG Evo in functionality & fun. Imo right now I don't see anything this phone does any better than its predecessor.

Coming from the Hero, this is a HUGE upgrade. Compared to my wife's OG Evo....not so much, until you look 6 months down the road. I think then we'll see the OG Evo's shortcomings. As the apps get bigger and graphically better and we have custom roms running on the 3D I think it will really seperate itself from all of it's predecessors.
See you, quit sucking up our bandwidth.....go somewhere else.

I hope you realize what you're saying about the screen..
"Retina Display" = Apple's name for a 960x540 resolution. The reason it looks a little better is because it's more pixels crammed into a smaller screen.
I'd take a 4.3 over it anyday.
I came from the Epic, and really really like both phones. I really don't think you can go wrong with either.

[Q] Thinking of buying a 3VO (EVO 3D) or whatever you call it

Hey guys, it's weird venturing to this section of XDA
I've had my EVO 4G since launch, it's still going strong with me as of today, and I gotta say I adore it. The XDA scene for EVO 4G is just amazing, currently using Synergy + Godmode.
But anyways, the 3D has been tempting me this summer and I have a few questions.
1. A customer came into my work with a 3D EVO, and he told me that Sprint gives you $150 credit if you trade it in with the EVO 4G, is this still true? I heard RADIOSHACK does the same thing but only a $100 discount, while I saw in some thread that the shack gave some guy a $175 credit for exchanging his phone.
2. Those of you who have the phone for a while, how's the battery life now? I get about 30-40 hours with moderate usage with the same stock battery that it came with the phone. Started out as only 10 with the 4G :X
3. I see that people have figured out to unlock the bootloader, now that ROM's are starting to be made, do you think the big EVO 4G rom dev's will contribute to making the 3VO as successful?
4. I know the phone has a dual core snapdragon cpu, so how does this compare to the EVO 4G? Are you guys generally happy with performance or do you wish it could be snappier for a dual core machine?
5. What's the camera quality of those 5 MP cameras? 3D, when it comes to the 3D do you guys like to use it often, or is it just a gimmick like the 3DS? Would you say that the performance of the phone is well worth it over the 3D stuffs?
6. Lastly, do you guys enjoy your phone? Especially the ones who switched from the original 4G.
Thank you for your time!
Too many questions for me to answer all of them properly
However, I love the phone, check out the dev section we already have tons of ROMS and its only a week since we got s-off.
Oh yes, I personally don't dig 3d, however some people seem to like it.
I am far from a professional photographer, but the pics look great to me.
Hope this helps!
If it does feel free to hit the thanks button

It's just a better Evo 4G. Nuff said.

I believe Sprint is still doing this, but yeah, they basically give you a $150 credit on your bill for your phone. That's what I did to get my E3D.

Battery life stock is pretty good, surprisingly. HTC really did a good job with power management consider the dual core processor. On my ROM, I regularly get over 20 hours of moderate use. If you're on the stock EVO 4G battery and you're getting 40 hours, I know you can't be using your phone heavily.
3. I see that people have figured out to unlock the bootloader, now that ROM's are starting to be made, do you think the big EVO 4G rom dev's will contribute to making the 3VO as successful?

Yes, absolutely. Some of the big names are already in here and there are a TON of ROMs already.

Performance is fantastic and once you tweak it, it gets even better.

Yeah, it's kind of a cool bragging feature like "Hey, look what my phone does!" but I don't use it too often. Picture quality is very good, IMO. It's anot a DSLR, but for a phone, it's pretty good.

Of course I do
As far as buybacks, I don't know. Battery life is excellent, camera IMO better. Look st all the Roms
Out so far and its been only a week since it was unlocked!!!!!! Performance is night and day compared to the original. This is one badass phone. Period. I have no regrets. I did not even mention the 3d part!
I think the buy back is now 125.00. The third party store I went to told me 125

Evo3d vs photon?

Hi guys, I currently have photon which I do like. I I hate motoblur, and end up rooting it and removing sprint bloat, installing different launcher, sms app, keyboard as photons stock offering is very much lacking.
Now, I always love custom roms which makes phone snapper, and right now, photon doesn't really have much to offer as far as dev goes at all... Specially due to unlocking method which kills 4g and so much workaround required to get it working.
I have an opportunity to trade my photon in for an evo3d. As far as raw performance gods, which is better? Is tegra chip much better than the dual core in the evo? I know that with the evo there is much more development going on to say the least, but is the device pretty comparable performance wise? Isn't photons display a little richer? Even though both are qhd?

Im going to give the best opinion before a battle breaks out. Go with whichever one your happier with. There both good phones.
Free Dirk!!!
The display on the EVO looks better in my opinion because if you look close at the photon it gets all colored its the pentile display. You will get mixed results about which phone has more raw power. The biggest differences are 3d vs global. The EVO also has an asynchronous processor and the photon doesn't. It's preference. Personally if I need my phone to last I can get a good 17 hours so I don't know if battery life is that important. But a lot of people saythat the photon is faster. I couldn't give you a verdict on that. They are both great phones.

Could care less about gsm on the device, i like build quality of the evo, but I want something with better potential, performance, and display.

Funny that a thread with this same title got locked about a week ago. Compare development pages too. Your answer is clear.

The display on the EVO is better. Again performance is a toss up. Ive seen very convincing results of the EVO heaving the more powerful processor but many people argue for the tegra two. You'll be pretty good either way.

As a owner of both.
Display: the 3D has a slightly crisper display but even with the brightness all the way down the Photon is still view-able in sunlight. Even with the brightness all the way up the 3D the screen is barely usable.
Battery: the Photon is heads and shoulders above the 3D. I'm a heavy user and was able to get more than a day worth of usage.
Radio: Photon wins here again. Locks and stays connected to 4G, 3G and voice signals much better than the 3D. The 3D would always drop connection on me whenever I tried downloading larger files.
Performance: Quadrant scores don't mean much but I consistently got around 2700 on the Photon running at stock speeds. The 3D only got 2200 max at stock speeds, the only time I got 2700-3000 I had to be overclocked at around 1.5Ghz. Remember the photon is only running at 1Ghz ( no overclocking available yet )
Sense vs. Blur: Sense adds a lot of apps and additional functionality but I do not use much if any of it, so for me it's just bloat. I prefer to replace rosie with Launcher Pro. The HTC gallery would never load my picasa album but the Photon's gallery loads my pics fine.
I never used the 3D functionality on the 3D but missed the kickstand on my OG Evo so the kickstand on the Photon is a welcome sight for sore eyes. The kickstand works in every orientation except upside down.
I travel over seas a lot so the gsm roaming is also a great addition.
Before either device launched the Photon was my original choice but being a gadget geek like most of you here, I caved and got the Evo 3D because it launched first.
There you have it, my summation of the features specs that are important for me.

From that shot it looks as if you don't hardly use your phone at all.
Your phone idle is using twice the battery your screen is using.

That's because I turn backlighting all the way down.
The screen is still bright enough.
I thought about it too. I switched to sprint from Verizon. I had a Droid x and decided to go with an evidence 3d. I had it over night and took it back and got a photon. It's way better than the evo. I'm not one for htc's sense stuff. The speaker is louder on the photon, camera seems better, and the phone is lite weight. I also like the trimmed edges

Sprint is throwing all their money into marketing for the Evo 3D but the Photon is a better phone bar none. The Photon would be a beast if it had the dev support like the Evo 3D.
Even without the dev support the Photon is still better.
I'm rooted but the bootloader is still locked so no real modding/customization as yet.
I have 30 days to decide but I think my mind is already made up.
The Evo 3D almost made me switch to Verizon, that's how bad it's radio issues were for me.

Wow, the issues you have or had make no sense. HTC radios are updated and improved more often and faster than any others I've seen. Price for the photon already droppped a hundred bucks at bestbuy. The only feature the photon has that I'm jelous of is the dock to t.v. control. Other than that laggy and and the too much plastic feel are overwhelming for such a high end phone.
And their off!!!!

Phonearena Evo LTE vs GSIII comparison

http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-vs-HTC-EVO-4G-LTE_id3068
Read this this morning, thought it was a great, unbiased comparison. Great read for anyone on the fence with the two devices.
Overall, it cemented my choice for the Evo 4g LTE....well it was already guaranteed, but it is a nice article for the people who are not so sure.
Just got my EVO yesterday and also pre-ordered a gs3 with $50 giftcard to bestbuy. I really like the EVO but may switch to the gs3. I have 30 days to try it out.
Thanks. Just a heads up the link you posted went to page 4. I read it and was thinking where the rest at.

Not hijacking, but I've only had this thing one day. Anyone out there that's had it longer what are your opinions?

Updated, thanks for the heads up.
I think the phone is great, easily topping the iphone 4s and galaxy nexus (both of which I have owned). It is easily the best phone I have owned. I highly recommend it.
Jelly Bean will only make it better in the future.
The Evo LTE is has a better display and a physical camera button. The only real performance spec the galaxy s3 has over it is a extra gig of RAM and a slightly bigger battery by 100mAh. So if I was you i would pick the phone you think looks best, since both have a good custom rom community and specs.
Essentially the HTC really would get better batterylife based off slcd vs amoled plus HTC generally has better signal quality. And honestly would the extra ram ever be used
That extra 1 gig of ram would be nice for multitasking but 1 gig is enough and is not the reason the lte sucks at it, its HTCs fault. Hopefully we get a fix soon as thats the only thing that leads me to wanting the s3, but the screen and sense is whats keeping me on the lte. Come on HTC fix multitasking!
Sent from my HTC EVO 4g LTE
The one gig of ram appears to be a marketing strategy.
The guy in phone arena even states that the evo 4g with sense 4.o performed slight better, whereas the GSIII stumbled from time to time.
nice and unbiased comparison. Funny how it just so happens the evo beats it in every category.
Samsung guys:
2gb of ram... OMG! Except the Evo had better scores on all benchmark tests. Also they noticed lag on the galaxy.
bigger battery... OMG! While samsung claims it will last two hours longer. In our testing the evo lasted longer.
Just full of lol. Hey guys, I have like 2 days left to swap my phone out.. I dont know.. I just really wanna go swap out for this other one, that looks and feels cheaper, and loses in every category tested against my evo. Sounds awesome right, I'm sure I'll love it!

not true, although the screen resolution of the GSIII is the same, the quality of it is not the same. curiousgeorge was telling me about it one time on gTalk i'll dig up the convo and post the info here... pretty interesting stuff actually.

Your right evo did win in a lot of categories...but the reviewer gave the GSIII plus where it deserved them...such as software features.
He didn't call a clear winner...because they are both great phones.
If you don't agree with the review, great, did explain why. But please avoid this thread in the future if your going to "pretend" to be an idiot in your response.

Maybe....and if that is the case then I apologize.
Often time on xda, people come and post such things in order to ruin a good conversation/debate....and such post often lead to a flame war.
Again, I apologize if that was his intention.
I may have poked fun at the samsung guys a bit, but was all in good fun. ( I thought it was kinda funny)
Really was a good comparison, I can send it to everyone on the fence, or to re-affirm to the ones that have already made their purchase.
When I personally make a recommendation they may remain on the fence, so it's good to have a site back you up on everything you've been forcing down peoples throats for a couple months.
I have been with HTC for over 3 years.. First with ATT with the Inspire and now with Sprint EVO LTE and I have to say is that I will always own an HTC phone.. I have rooted all my HTC phones and they work great on and off the root. The camera on the EVO is great. The Internet Speed is fast. I live in Atlanta and soon will get LTE in a few weeks and can't wait to see what happens... GO WITH THE EVO...

I apologize. Been a long day at work, but I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.
I did not realize that you were making fun of the samsung "fan boys" who posted on the phonearena website. You are right in the way you protrayed them. It is ridiculous how angry people become with tech reviewers when the review doesn't go their way.
Again I am sorry, and for what it is worth I agree with you.
