[Q] orion processor and ice cream sandwich - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i just read about android 3.2 coming out soon and it will officially support 7 inch tablets as well as Qualcomms new dual core processors. So as of now honeycomb only supports nivdea and qualcomm. So my question is do you think they will support samsung s processor by the time ice cream sandwich is launched?

Google stated this year .
All firmware upgrades will roll out to all phones for 18 months from date of launch providing hardware capable .

[Q] Ice Cream Sandwich on the Atrix 4G

So since there's no way to get ICS (2.4? 3.0? 3.1?) on the Atrix without Motorola releasing a compatible kernel, my question is:
When did Motorola release a compatible kernel for the locked Droids after Froyo was released last June on the Nexus One last year?
I just need to know when I should expect Ice Cream on the Atrix by XDA (won't wait for Motorola). Because without GPU acceleration I think the Atrix will provide an inferior experience to the Nexus S when the latter receives the summer update. Not to mention how inexperienced everyone is with Tegra 2, compared to Hummingbird.
Thanks.
as of right now the next version is gingerbread (2.3) so forget about ice cream. the droid 2 / X hasn't even got 2.3 yet, motorola may do only one OS upgrade per phone so the atrix will probably only get 2.3
If 2.3 proves to be unoptimized for the tegra 2 then MAYBE we will get 2.4, but since it doesn't exist yet it will be end of the year AT LEAST.

I'm not talking about Motorola's updates, but rather, when they would be expected to release a compatabile Kernel for the devs to work with.

Woah.
So I guess Nexus S it is! Netarchy with 1.2.5 cfs kernel with cm7-rc1 already runs Flash super buttery smooth (overclock not needed) so I doubt there'll be any real-life gains to having a dual-core smartphone till Dell releases their Ice Cream in September, and even then, we'll be 2 months away from a Google Experience Dual Core Nexus...

nexus prime will be announced next week + ICS ?

So are they going to give us ICS after the release of the prime ? our hardware surely has to be compatible ! How does this work ! Is this going to be just for future phones ?

1-ice cream sandwich is going to be announced next week correct !
2-isn't it the next android Operating system for phones up from honeycomb
Yes or No !
WiKi Android OS
2.3 Gingerbread
3.0 Honeycomb
3.1 Honeycomb
3.2 Honeycomb
Future releases
(ICS) is short for > 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is said to be a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb into a "cohesive whole".[51] In September 2011, Eric Schmidt stated that Ice Cream Sandwich "is being released in October/November."[61] Ice Cream Sandwich will be publicly unveiled on October 19 in Hong Kong.[62]

So what's the problem answering the question ?
why the hell are you yelling?
Yes, ICS is going to be announced next week
Yes, it is the next android version for phones and tablets. honeycomb was only for tablets.
how the hell would we know for sure if we are going to see ICS released from samsung for our phones? you seem to want a definite answer, yet we cant give that to you because im guessing most of us dont work for samsung.
a good guess would be that, yes we will see a touchwiz version of ICS made available for our phones, but not for months from now. we most definitely will not see a version as soon as its released on the nexus devices.

Yeah, it was a joke. My whole point was it's funny how people worry about an OS release that they don't even know anything about, yet they let it influence their buying decision.

google makes new version of android
google releases new version of android (only available on nexus devices at first)
manufacturers begin working on their tainted/bloated/overly UI'd versions of the new google android build
eventually, at close to the time of the next new shiny build of the next android version, we see the manufacturers, (more importantly the carriers) start pushing out the version that is now 3-6 months old, and we see complaints up until the point the next shiny version is put out about how all the manufacturers/carriers are stupid and dont support their devices....
rinse, repeat

If you don't know what the benefit of an OS is, why would it matter if you have it or not? You're acting as blindly as the sheep who bought the new iPhone 4S just because it was marketed as an upgrade.
At least be informed if you're going to ask stupid questions. Nobody minds answering questions from people who google the question first.
The new OS is expected to be unveiled on October 19 and fans all over the world can watch the event live on Google’s YouTube channel, starting 10 AM HK time. Along with the OS, the world is expecting Google and Samsung to release the Nexus Prime / Galaxy Nexus smartphone at the event as well. The Galaxy Nexus has been highly anticipated since it will be the first smartphone to showcase the ICS OS.
So 10:00 PM Tonight it'll be broadcast

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Hi guys! What you think? Is it possible to bring new Android into SGS2?
I was watching at Hong Kong conference. So I'm excited. Probably I'll buy new phone - Galaxy Nexus. So what's your opinion? Is it possible? I'm noob .
Very possible. Google Nexus is not that much of a hardware leap from the SGS2. It will come to the SII

Give it time… you'll see a ROM or two out by Thanksgiving IMO. The sdk has been released, and once the Nexus hits the market, and a system dump is "in the wild", devs will cook ROMs like crazy!

doop - I think so after week it will be new rom here.
ceo.mtcl - Why? It looks phenomenal!
jjhiza - I agree with you
Is ICS's native GUI hardware accelerated by GPU?? From the demo, it doesn't seems perfectly smooth to me. Although Android 3.x was promoted as hardware accelerated GUI, I still find it very laggy scrolling through the homepages when there are some widgets. Putting it besides iPads, it's really a negative to Android.
Not supposed to say this maybe, but I'm underwhelmed by the UI in ICS. Had the same feeling about much of Honeycomb, really.
The UI is looking more and more Metro-like and ultra minimalist to the point of absurdity with every iteration. :shudder:
Flame away, but Gingerbread looks far better to me aesthetically. Give me the under the hood fixes, better multiprocessor support, etc. , but leave what works alone, IMO. If I wanted a Win-doze phone 7 device, I'd buy one.

No but really that's a question only Samsung can answer. We have the SDK but we need a system dump and even then who knows what hurdles we have to jump to get it to function properly.
Just keep an eye on various development sections.

Earlier with cyanogenmod I would say And I am not looking for anything else because ics will be gimped to death by touchwiz
Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
I guess that would be a yes, I can't see Samsung not updating a hugely popular handset (which has yet to have a real update) but I can not see them doing it anytime soon unless they drop the 2.3.5 update like they did with 2.3.4 to look at ICS.
As you know for Google phones it's immediately but for other brand it takes some time. Personally I think it will be after 3 or more months for official Samsung ROM.
They'll want to sell Galaxy Nexus for Christmas, but I don't expect Samsung to release for the SGS2 until New Year.

But system dump of Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Nexus?
Have we have to wait the Samsung official 4.0 firmware for S2?
Android 2.3.5 was out on July and Samsung official 2.3.5 for S2 was out in October... It takes 3 months, pheraps 4 monts, not 9...

Verizon announces Ice Cream Sandwich update for 14 devices

ORIGINAL SOURCE CAN BE READ HERE : http://www.rethink-wireless.com/2012/03/08/verizon-announces-ice-cream-sandwich-update-12-devices.htm
Any Verizon customers wondering when they can expect to get the update to Android 4.0 on their handset or tablet has a little more to go on as of this week as the carrier has released a list of fourteen devices which will receive Ice Cream Sandwich. While it reveals what will be getting the latest version of Android it doesn't go into the more crucial detail of when.
Handsets set to get the upgrade include; HTC's ThunderBolt, Droid Incredible 2, Rhyme and Rezound, Motorola's Bionic, Razr, Razr Maxx and Droid 4 and LG's Spectrum. Among the tablets getting the upgrade are Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and 10.1 and Motorola's Xoom and Xyboards.
The fact the Droid devices make the list isn't surprising as Motorola had already said so in its own announcement. If it's anything to go by then it means anyone eager to receive the update could face waiting up to Q3 this year to get it on their handset.
In addition to refining the Android UI with common actions made more visible, more intuitive gestures and other features such as Android Beam and Face Unlock the new OS works across both tablets and smartphones. This avoids the divergence of the two branches of the Android that was seen when the tablet-friendly 3.0 was released.
Verizon promises to update the list as more information becomes available "throughout the year". This doesn't exactly suggest that the update is going to be available soon and may encourage Android loving customers to look elsewhere for their Ice Cream Sandwich thrills. If they stick with Verizon this mainly means opting for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which was released in December and comes with the OS pre-installed.

It seems to be overlooked by EVERYONE, but all of the articles i've read say that the Jellybean 5.0 OS will be tablet based ONLY. Not for phones... much like the Honeycomb OS. Correct me if im wrong
That would be absolutely retarded. They just brought them together under ICS and then break them apart again with JB?
I hope they don't do that...

Not true, its supposed to implement some sort of desktop mode for tablets. I'm pretty sure they aren't going to fragment it anymore

I hope to when HTC gives us ICS they also update the Rezound to 4.0. I would love to see this happen but with 4.0.
Id love vanilla ice cream from htc but sadly i know this wont happen. Hopfully the devs can get aosp going. Id say we should have the OTA by mid summer.

Android 4.0.4 Update

Hi guys,
I know that we have just gotten ICS, but do you think we would receive 4.0.4 at some stage as it does have some improvements to stability of the platform aswell as better camera performance and screen rotation?
To much to ask for perhaps?
Thanks!

Not sure about 4.0.4 but Germany and Italy 3G models have received a revision of 4.0.3. This was due to 3G issues. Not sure if anything else has been changed. Apparntly 5.0 aka Jelly Bean in general is due out near the end of the year. So would be ages away for SONY Tabs lol

Jelly Bean will be Android 4.1 (or at least thats what media says in Spain) and I think It´ll be presented at the end of June (When google will show its Nexus Tablet)
I hope Sony wil bring Jelly Bean to our tabs because ICS doesn´t work really fine....
Also Spanish 3G Sony Tablets S received ICS 4.0.3 R2
Sony tablet will release 4.0.4 somewere end of this year but i think it would be "Probaly" next year, and even if jelly bean 4.1 will be launched it will take too long after launch to recieve the update, by then, you need a other tablet

as of today Jellybean 4.1 had been confirmed. It will be out this year for the Nexus devices. Hopefully that means this tablet can do it too... To Sony's credit, this was hardly the last tablet to get ics, so maybe we can hope for a quick turnover to 4.1 !
