[Q] Move/Install App to Internal USB Storage (Not to External SD) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Is it possible to move an existing app or install new app to USB Storage (comes along with SGS2) and not to the external SD card (i dont have though as 16 Gb is enough for me )......
When ever i install an app its getting installed in System storage (only 2 GB max available and i already have nearly 1.3 gb filled up there ).......so is it possible to move the stuffs from there to the internal USB STORAGE.........i checked app2sd but seems to be its poitning to the external sd card.....
also, when i went to applications and clicked "Move to SD card" its shwoing as not enough memory......
i have tried searching entore XDA but could find a viable solution.....
@JJEgan: Please do not tell me to search the net/ xda forums as a reply to this question (which u have already given to others http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1135233) as i have already searched a lot and tried different apps...but none could give me what i am really looking for.......
Any help on this is much appreciated........

Hmm, when I select Move to SD, it moves it. No problem at all. Puts them on the internal one.

Unreleated but might be helpful

When I moved some of my apps to sdstorage (internal) I did not know that if you do a factory reset it wipes your internal sdstorage (i.e. sdcrad), so make sure you do a backup to computer if you need to factory reset your device.
ATB

Oh wow. Which 'factory reset' function are we talking about in that case? You know, the one through the dialer, or the one in the options menu. I know, they do exactly the same but.. I noticed that if I select wipe data/factory reset in the recovery menu, it does not touch my SD cards at all. Let it be internal or external. Weird huh?

I am not too sure...

The thing is that I keep fiddling with my phone and my internal sdcard got wipe a few times. I know that the dialer will delete your stuff on the internal sdcard, but I think the one on the options menu also delete the sdcard, but I am not 100% sure and dont really want to try again just incase. So unless someone can confirm it better do a backup to PC.

Am i missing something here folks, sorry to hijack this thread i dont wanna start a new one and it's a similar issue i have, when i connect the cable from my phone to the usb on my laptop i cant see my SD card (even after i have unmounted sd card)
what am i doing wrong here, all i wanna do is to copy music and files onto my external SD without having to physically taking the SD card out of the phone.
cheers

Unmount? You must've meant mount. You mean when you select Mount USB from the status bar, the external sd won't show up? What about the internal one, can you access that one?

yes i meant mount yeah i can see the internal ok just not the external.
when i had my HD2 running CM7 when i connected the cable from phone to laptop the sd card folder came up straight away.
??

Guys,
Sorry to disturb you in your conversation
but, i think my question is not answered or i didnt understood the replies.....can any one of you pls help me

i am having the same problem as smilingcruel. keeps saying not enough memory. Am i actually trying to save to an external sd and is there a setting i should change? running out of space quick.

Hi.
I have the same problem, but it seems no one has answered the question yet.
Is there any solution ?
Maybe the problem has been addressed in some other thread... thanks in advance for your help.
David

I have the same problem that when I say move to SD it tells me "Failed to move application: Not enough Memory" but when I look on the sd card I see it there.
Also, it seems not all can be moved to the internal sd card. I was hoping to do something like link2sd does but it requires you to repartition the SD card and I'm not how to do that with the internal one.
link2sd rocks for creating links for just about any app on your sd card.

Not sure if this would help. I have been having d same prob previously.
But once i inserted a SD card (regardless of wat d size is), i'd able to send d apps to the internal memory through app2sd. (not d external sd in fact)

No answer yet ?
How can we move our app from internal phone memory ( 2 gb ) to out USB Storage (30 gb internal )
Move to SD option says that "Failed to move application. No SD card"
I have enough memory on my phone (32 bg ) and I don't want to add an external SD card , how can I sole this problem ?
thanks

So there is any solution to install apps on USB Storage? Because when I move them by App2sd to external SD they disappeared after rebot.
I'm using Omega v19.2 Jelly Bean 4.1.2 ROM, but probably it's the same problem on stock.

I am having this issue also, but in Jelly Bean.
I used a 4GB SD card to flash my phone with Chameleon ROM (4.1.2 JB) and the SmartROM kernel, when the phone was setup and working I removed the SD card.
Before when I used Resurrection Remix (also 4.1.2 JB) that was not an issue, but then again I had never used a SD card with it.
Now I can not install anything because of lack of space and I can not move any app to the Internal "USB" partition... even though there is 5 GB free.
I did format the entire phone (using CWM Recovery, formatted system, data, etc, etc) before I installed Chameleon.
What gives?

This thread went quiet without a resolution, I have the same issue on 4.1.2, with my internal sd 12gb partition being empty and apps not moving either saying failed or not enough space.
With an external sd card mounted it moves them there, but after a reboot as others mentioned they now longer function.
Any help would be appreciated!
Parition works with CM9 and CM10.2 oddly not sammy 4.1.2

Unable to install apps on Internal USB storage

Before when I move the installed apps using ap2sd or appmonster by default it used to move to the internal USB Storage(11GB) of Galaxy S2. I recently did a wipe re-flash of ROM and after that when I move the installed apps- by default its going to the external SD card I have installed which is 8GB. Now the internal storage is not used at all. Is there anyway I can fix this issue without going for another reflash? Any help is highly appreciated!

Nope it doesn't... That's exactly what the problem is... Unable to move apps to the internal USB (SD) memory... It looks for an external SD card instead and gives an error...

I think I'm having the same problem.
Only noticed it this morning when I tried to download a new app (existing update fine) and it failed, stating that it was unable to save to USB storage. I also can't mount USB storage in CWM recovery mode.
Did you or anyone else find a solution?
Well it appears that my internal storage is knackered.
Booted into CWM and tried to 'mount USB storage', but am greeted with 'E:Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory).
If factory reset and flashing a stock ROM is necessary, then I can do that. But, if the storage is inaccessible, am I even able to do that? Would opting to 'Erase USB Storage' in the settings>storage menu be of any use?
sameproblem here...
ok i solved the problem...

I had something similar when I installed a ROM with an older CWM. I lost my SD card but could access it from the PC. I copied a backup over to the internal memory and recovered.
how about just unmount the external SD card then try to install again?
Unable to move apps to internal usb storage
I am also facing the same issue.Somebody plz let me know any workaround for moving apps to Internal USB storage. Under settings>application manager> there is an option to move apps to external sd card only. Is it possible to install/move apps to internal usb storage (around 11.5 GB). Please help.
Phone - Galaxy s2 (At&t sgh i777)
ROM - Shostock3 rom (android 4.1.2)
I have mounted an external sd card and using link2sd to move apps to it. One thing I noticed that with sd card mounted, when I move apps to external sd card, some part of the app moves to the usb storage and also the app size increases after doing so. However, still there is no direct way of moving/installing apps to usb storage without an external sd card.

[Q] Phone Memory.. confused about

1. I'm a little confused about the phone's memory..
So there is the SD card, and there is the 10gb memory.
If I use clockwork recovery.. and perform a full wipe/reset/factory, does everything in the 10gb internal memory card get deleted?
Or can I keep files in it?
2. Shouldn't we have a question forum about now??
I mean.. its about time.. more and more people are getting the phone everyday.. come on..
AFAIK there are two SD Cards, one come pre-installed from HTC which gave us 10Gb after reverse some 6Gb for the phone/system and the phone identified it as SDCard. The second one will be add-on as per user's option and the phone will identified it as SDCard2 or Ext_Sd card
Perform a full wipe/reset/factory will not delete your files on that 10Gb SDCard and/or the ext-sdcard that you may have had put in
Others may know better and may corrected me if I'm wrong

Your phone has 16 gigs of memory (when they say 16 its usually truly about 14 gigs), about 2 are allocated for installing programs, however their data can be allocated to other places such as the external SD or internal SD. For example if you install a game with a big data file such as asphalt 6 the main program is installed in the 2 gig part, most programs should be more that a few kilobytes to 10-20 megs max. Their data however can be installed onto the SD card if the program allows it. If you have root, you can force even programs that do not allow SD card allocation to be installed on to the SD card, but this may ending up messing up the program...for example if you install a widget onto the sd card it will stop working. It needs to be in that 2 gig partition
older phones like the Nexus one only had about 256 megs of free space for programs, so such things as sd ext. partitions were made in the external SD cards to make the program and phone think that this is an extention/part of that 256 partition that can be used as programs thereby increasing space to install programs.
-External SD, is an SD card you put in your phone
-Internal SD is a partition of that 16 gigs and is allocated to save things on such as videos, music etc. the
-sd ext partition is a partition that you could make on an SD card to think that it is where the programs can be installed and used (not their data, just the main program itself, problem with this is if you're using a slow SD card, some programs can have lag) in our amaze since we have 2 gigs to store programs, there is little worry about running out of space, unless you're insalling like 500 programs...then you could partition your sd card to be sd ext
there are sd ext1, sd ext2, sd ext3 and sd ext4 that I know of...To learn more about those search on google. I forget exactly what the differences are, and not all roms/phones are compatible with all the sd ext types.
hope I didn't confuse you.

not true, performing factory reset from settings menu, gives you the option of deleting both internal and external sd, you MUST uncheck those boxes if you wish to have those data remain intact and not deleted.
dude thanks.. but that was a huge long explanation..
I sort of knew that.. im no noob, but you can post that on General.. I'm sure it would answer a lot of noobish questions..
Im just asking if the non user SD gets deleted.. I come from another phone which the only SD was the one you put in..
So this whole thing of 2 memories (inside and outside) is confusing to me..
So just to be clear, with a wipe.. does the internal SD get erased, yes, or no?
(and thanks.. i thanked u both)
Will it considered abusing the thanks button if I thank you for thanked me (j/k)
If you use clockwork recovery, 10GB internal space is untouched unless you want to format them. Full/Factory wipe deletes the internal SD space of user data and apps.
I usually keep my personal files during full/factory/reset while I need to do flashing.
But no one knows It's always better to backup any important files

if you go under settings > storage . and scroll to the bottom click factory data reset, gives you two options. make sure the one that says erase all data is not checked...if you don't have an external sd "erase sd card" is grayed out, if you do make sure that one is unchecked as well...if you check those.
Erase all data deletes internal SD.
Erase SD card deletes External SD.
does that help?
I believe if you do it from custom recovery it will not delete any of the internal or external. but check with binary again.

[Q] Strange Recovery behaviour when trying to repartition internal sd

Hi,
I'm new to here.
I have a Computer Science Degree so my level of expertise with PC is high, but I'm fairly new to the Smartphones world, so I'm asking for help because there's something I can't manage to get it to work in my Samsung Galaxy SII (nobrand).
Let's begin with some info about the device:
The device was a 3.xx, then upgraded via Kies to 4.03 and succesfully rooted with CF's root. I routed my device since I wanted to have full control over it, but mostly because I wanted to install a firewall (to prevent some application from accessing the internet unless I specifically wanted them to do so) and widen the device's space reserved to install applications since it was over.
Before routing, I tried to pursue the "move to external SD" trick, but that resulted like a pain in the ass. The external sd was loaded discontinuously, so at eath boot up I was finding myself with broken or unaccessible application, frequent reboots, frozen system untill the sd was loaded, forcing me to cold re-boot the phone. That lead to sd burnout since probably at the 100th freeze, I cold-turned-off the phone during a write cycle and ****ed it up.
SO, this is the reason why I don't want to move applications to external sd anymore (here where I live it's said: forgive the first, club the second)
I noticed that there is a new trick that consists in repartitioning part of the internal SD to ext format and bridging it to the phone's memory tricking the phone to think applications are installed into the phone's memory where they are actyally installed into the internal repartitioned sd instead. (with some apps)
So after months of thoughts about resetting the phone and trying this solution, Yesterday I believed the time had come. In the meantime, Android 4.12 was officially released by Samsung, so I decided to take 2 peagions with 1 breadcrumb and did the match.
I first did a hard reset, then I installed everything new via Odin (downloaded the entire 900Mb pack and flashed it over). Everything went ok and I succesfully installed PhilZ Kernel 4.022b +root).
The Phone is now operative and fully working...
BUT
going to re-partition the external SD is a real nightmare I haven't been able to dig through.
I try to access the recovery with VolUp+Home+Power and the recovery loads. Immediately after booting, I receive the following error:
E: failed to Mount exfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sdcard
"Nevermind I thought...I don't have an external SD card so that might be the problem".
I went to "Advanced" and then "Partition Internal SD Card", I selected the sizes (2048/32), some rapid flashes and menu back to where it was. Consulting the log, the error is the same as before: E: failed to Mount exfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sdcard
Mhm...maybe I should select "external SD card". Result: Can't Mount SD Card
So we have...the internal sd card trying to Mount to /sdcard...that is the same as external? Something doesn't really work...
So...the card works in phone mode...but not in recovery mode...how strange...
Then i recalled that when I routed the phone, I installed the root via recovery/zip file, so It should actually see the internal sd card. BINGO! when I try to install something, It perfectly loads the internal contents of the card and a quick look to the path, unveils the problem:
THE INTERNAL CARD IS MOUNTED TO /emmc/
So...we have...recovery mounts internal card to /emmc but when he tries to repartition/reformat he tries to Mount...something to something else and fails.
So I'm stuck here. I heared this might be a problem because 4.12 changes mappings to devices and that I should tamper with vold.fstab but before destroying my phone I came here to ask some experts.
I also read that I might bind externalSD to internalSD, but I don't really uderstad what this mean. Is it something temporary? Will I be able to use external sd and internal sd or is it something I have to operate each time I want to use external SD.
Last but not least: Does that apply to my case? Because I saw that there is people applying that method that have problems loading internalsd in phone mode but my case is completely different. The phone works 100%, the only problem is that I can't repartition from recovery.
So CWM problem? PhilZ problem?
Please help me as I'm stuck.
EDIT: I found ICS SD Binder, but has someone any advice on how to map correctly internal & external SD card? Also...the phone when is on, mounts internal card to /sdcard. So where is the point? Should I Mount the internal card manually to /sdcard?
Man thats a long post. Most of it sounds greek to me. Anyway i have been using my s2 for sometime now. But i still could not fill 2gb of my internal memory with apps. And you dont have to partition your internal sd

If you read his first sentence, it states that he has filled his memory with apps, he does not have any more room on his internal sdcard partition. Some of those apps he uses could take alot of memory.

This means you didn't read paying attention... I don't want to move application to EXTERNAL sd card...just re-partition the internal and move THERE some of them.
CWM has an option "partition internal sd card", that does not work because it tries to do things on /sdcard while the internal sdcard is mounted as /emmc and NOT /sdcard.

keep this one, remove the other one (idk how to)
Without any basic info, I would just simply suggest you to do a reflash, a clean installation, start from scratch.
Re: Internal SD Card not mounting?
Well I'm on the slimbean rom 4.2.2 build 2.5
Current, when I go to storage, it says that I have only 1.97gb of internal storage when I should really have 11gb.
I'm running stweaks with the ajk "everything works" kernel
In storage, there is a category called "USB STORAGE" under it, it says Mount SD Card but it's greyed out. And then it says "insert an SD card for mounting" meaning that my phone doesn't even think I have an internal SD card.
In CWM, of I try to Mount SD card, of doesn't let me and if I retry to format SD card, it doesn't let me
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
This happened to me once. I removed the card and put in my PC then copied all the data off as a backup. I reformatted the card and then when I put it back into my phone it mounted great. I then went back and moved all the data back via USB.

USB storage would be the internal memory, or internal sd card if you prefer, and SD card would be the external sd card which you must insert first before you can mount. If you will look again, you will probably see that it says device memory is 1.97 gb total space with usually 1.something gb still available. I don't know your rom and kernel real well, but maybe device memory is called internal storage? USB storage should say something like 11.36 gb total space.
So if the USB storage is not being recognized then the problem could be either hardware or firmware related. So did you flash back to stock, or reflash your rom or another rom? That would be the first step of troubleshooting.
you formatted your external sd card to do this?
Researching...
so i did some more looking around on the forums today and found out that there is a way to get back your internal sd card by running these commands
i opened up terminal emulator and ran these commands that i saw on another forum:
su
echo mkdir /storage/sdcard0 > /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 700 /data/local/userinit.sh
reboot
apparently, after the reboot, your phone is supposed to have mounted the internal sd card manually.
however after trying this method twice and rebooting, i still have the same error and my sd card has yet to be mounted

nope, all it says is that internal storage total space = 1.97gb
SD card stoage space (external sd card) = 3.68gb (this is true becasue i have a 4gb external sd card)
theres nothing that says 11.36gb free total space

I got distracted when I was posting that and hit send before I was finished. I went back a few minutes later to finish it. The whole point was to say that the problem is either hardware or firmware related, and to troubleshoot it you need to flash back to stock, or re-flash your rom or another rom.
Also, assuming the mount commands you used in terminal are good working commands, it would point to possible hardware failure.

CM sometimes messes with the partitioning or something. I have almost no experience with CM so you will need to get some advice from the CM guys. Try posting in the CM user thread maybe. Also mention your memory question there as it could be related to CM, maybe.

hey i just saw something interesting. when i go to CWM and try to install from internal sd card, it says "E: Can't mount /emmc/" any ideas as to what that means?
SOLVED!
First off, i want to thank all of you guys for helping me out i couldnt have done it without your support and suggestions.
Heres how i solved the internal sd card problem:
Well, i tried to use odin but odin didnt work and then i used the cyanogenmod 9.1 stable build but that didnt fix it either
Heres what i did: Downloaded the Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly build for 3/29/13.
after flashing it in cwm (i put it onto my External sd card), i rebooted system, it loaded up and whatnot
and then it told me that my internal sd card was either corrupted or unsupported.
it also gave me the option to format it in order to fix any corrupted files.
so i formatted it and voila! its fixed

[Q] Phone Storage -> Internal SD -> External SD

I believe similar matters have been discussed but I could not find a concrete answer.
As you all know A116 has Phone Storage (0.98GB); Internal SD Card (1.76GB) and External SD Card (mine is 20GB).
I want to swap Phone Storage with Internal SD Card as I have massive issues downloading even small apps. Phone Storage is currently showing 60MB available.
I have unrooted the phone using farmaroot and I have tried to play around with vold.fstab using ES File Explorer. What that (swapping sdcard0 with sdcard1 in the script) does is swap Internal SD Card with External SD Card. The Phone Storage issue still persist.
Could anyone help, I believe the solution could be -
a) Swap Phone Storage with Internal SD Card
b) Re-partition Phone Storage and Internal SD Card, combine them and make just one partition.
Thank you
Extend phone storage

I guess u meant "rooted my phone".
Also the method u mentioned swap internal memory with external memory(i.e memory card) but doesn't touch phone storage
but thanks to awesome kaydee we have a solution

All the best!!
@Sana_Khan,
If you need more /data space just repartition your device, there's a tutorial on how to do it in the apps section.
Also something is using your memory there in a weird way, there should be 600MB left, where are they? Check through /data with root explorer what's occupying all your space there...

Hi GroovyG thanks for the response. It is indeed weird as by looking at the pic I attached I should have 600MB left. But I believe all the operating system files are stored on phone storage and that seems hidden. This sounds logical to me as well.

Thanks. Yes, I meant rooted my phone. I will give it a shot but it does seem very complicated process. I will need to arrange a windows machine as well as I have macbook. Is there a macbook based software solution you are aware of?
I am surprised there isn't an easier solution to this.

As of now I don't know any mac-book based software but i would say u really give it go. U can run windows on a Virtual machine or could borrow ur frnd's laptop. Actually, only flashing tool available for CHD is spflash tool which is on windows but, if u know any mac based flash tool than u can do the same thing with that too.
Also the process is not at all difficult if u read through his post...don't forget the checkout the comments it might help u sometime
