Back Key not responding. Big retailer possibly selling 2nd hand phones as new. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my SGS2 one day ago and I am pretty sure i will be asking for a replacement tomorrow.
BACK KEY does not respond properly. I need to insist sometimes touching it over 20 times before it can notice it. The touch screen and the button on the left work perfectly.
I also found that the metal strip over the SIM card slot had fingerprints on it, which i think should not be the case since workers at the factory use gloves.
Another detail. Even though the box of the phone was sealed, the girl at the shop insisted on open it to make sure everything was in...
I am buying from the biggest mobile phone retailer in my country. I will be reporting further later on. I am afraid this is gonna be a long story for me .

who did you buy it off? make sure you get a replacement off samsung.

I will try to get more evidence of their wrongdoing, when things are more clear then I will say out the name of the retailer to alert other consumers
The problem is that the Back Key responds fine during long periods. I have not yet found the circumstances that trigger the unresponsiveness.
So this is gonna be tricky to show at the shop, if I m lucky they will see immediately.
But, I keep on wondering whether it is acceptable or not that the phone had fingerprints in the SIM card slot.
The seal say "do not accept if seal is broken". it was not broken, because it was put there by the retailer

A "big retailer" has no business in providing dodgy second-hand phones.
At worst it's likely you got a phone someone had opened and tinkered with in the shop. Beyond that, the assistant could even have picked up a device which was returned by someone and by mistake assumed it was a new phone.
I also had an issue where I didn't have the microSD card in the box. Now, considering the box is sealed with the black security sticker, it would be pretty hard to get the microSD card out. I didn't check the security sticker because I was too desperate to get the phone out and start using it.
You don't have distance selling rights in this case so you have a hard task ahead of you - because you could have just returned it within 14 days had you bought it online or over the phone, now it's just your word against the retailers.

It seems that the issue comes after the screen has been on for a while. Initially i thought it only came when using the camera, or in settings, but I just now it's happened when i was browsing sms.
This is the 1st time I use samsung or Android. Is this kind of thing common?
I have contacted Samsung... the girls told me to go back to the shop (because i got the phone only 2 days ago) and that it is not normal that the phone had fingerprints in the sim card slot.

Totally correct. If you only just got it and it doesn't work, take it back to the shop and just be polite but firm. They have to replace it if you say there's a fault.

Thanks all for ur replies
Because I have never used Android before I was thinking that maybe the Back Key has a different behavior than the left key in order to prevent accidental touch.
Otherwise the phone is fine. It has the infamous yellowish left side defect, but I can live with it.
At the operator, i was told that it is common practice to open the box to check everything is in, at least for this retailer... is it really common that factory workers forget to put all the stuff in
I keep on testing and getting mad at this, before going to the shop

That's down to the supplier. That's why you'll get a phone from provider A with a 8GB card, or from provider B with a 16GB card (for example).

Oh I see, Thought I had been short changed as I didn't get a micro sd with mine from O2
I have since bought a 16gb class 10 but to be honest I am not sure that it is being used as everything goes on to the internal sd storage with plenty of space to spare.

Yeah, I used to think it was down to the manufacturer, but when I got the HD2 I got a sleeve with it, but lots of people on xda were a bit miffed because they didn't have one. Also, SD cards ranged from 2GB to 16GB (possibly 32GB - can't remember), depending on who you got it from.
I didn't get an SD card with my SGS2 either, so I just sold my HD2 with the 2GB one that I got with it and kept the 16GB one for myself.
Mwah-ah-ah-ahhhh!

Would a supplier open the phone for inserting a SIM card?
This one came without microsd. I asked the girl if the phone come with one while she was inspecting the box, and because she did not know she was going to open the phone, but i told her I preferred to check by myself.

Just back from the shop. Their attention was excellent. The phone will be replaced as soon as they get more units.
The thing is that 2.5 weeks ago they told me sgs2 are sold out. 10 days ago in another shop of the same retailer I paid for one to pick up 10 days later (i thought because they were waiting for the new batch). But the supply of sgs2 has not yet arrived. So the phone was one of the last sgs2 they had in the whole city. This usually means more probability that the phone has some problem.
The guy at the shop told me that it is not normal that the phone had fingerprints.
Frankly, i thought this would be much more troublesome and i am now convinced that this retailer is not doing things wrong. I think I will change the name of the thread if possible to something like"when u dont get what u expected from a big retailer".
My suspicions are the product of one bad experience with their technical support. Also, I am paranoid ever since I was offered an 8gb Nokia N8 from a operator (never seen other than 16gb).
Hopefully the next batch will also come with amoled screens and samsung's renderer chip.

Try this next time if it happens again...
*#*#2663#*#*
then update the firmware (Bottom button)
But I did both anyway..

This code doesn't work on my phone

UPDATE
No one knows when the next batch of sgs2 will come to this EU city where they are sold out since few weeks ago.
In the meanwhile I have been using the phone and for few days I thought the problem was gone as the back key was working fine (responding as well as the left key), but then I charged the phone and for first time used it while charging. Very soon after plugging the charger, the back key was almost not responding at all.
If unresponsiveness only happened during the first minutes of the charging process, I could take it. However I first noticed the issue while in normal use.
Lately my screen is taking nearly 90% of the battery consumption (just browsing use), which could explain why the issue did not appear. But now I have just found a way to copy files to the internal card of the phone and I will be testing with hr movies.
I doubt it is just a problem on my phone, so I would appreciate that someone reports how does his back key respond during the first minutes of the charging process
Thanks

Hot swappable Ameo - an EASY mod!

For anyone who's interested in making the SIM on their x7500 hot-swappable - like the Kaiser -and perhaps hasn't been sure whether to try it or not, the fiddly little clip that goes over the SIM card and which cannot be opened without removing the battery CAN be taken off with a little careful persuation and agitation.
It has no effect on the sim (which is held in place perfectly well by friction) and makes me wonder why HTC put it there in the first place.
I have been using my handset with this mod for about a month now, swapping sims between my normal handset and the Ameo with no problems whatsoever. The clip can easily by reattached in the event of a sale or warranty repair.
Upon hot swapping you have to deactivate and reactivate the via the Comms manager et voila!
Pictures attached.

yep i been using it like this for about 3 months now as well
it works really well...
although the sim for me was a bit hard to get out each time so i took a knife and cut a little groove in the sim card so i could get my nail into it
thanks for your point!! good idea!

define what u mean by an 'extra sim card'. I have a specific number with an attached data tarif which I want to use with my n95 and also my ameo (when im not out and about) are you talking about a pay as you go sim card, a new tarif or some kind of 'spare' sim as I was not aware that I could get a clone sim card.

I think the marketing term is "Duo SIM". It's a clone of the original SIM. Some companies give one for free (IIRC Vodafone).
You can use only one at a time though (you have to switch the phone you don't use off).
i'm on t-mobile uk and they certainly don't offer this service. I'd be interested to know how i could clone my sim though, since my reasons are entirely legitimate. Does anyone know if this can be done or if it's allowed?!
there's a reason you can't just pull the simcard out; and it's because the radio *really* doesn't appreciate it and generally speaking, it shouldn't be done.
that said, there's all likelihood that it won't matter anyway.
do you feel lucky, punk?

I would also be very interested in this in the UK, but I've never come across it.
If anyone knows any better, please let us know.
Alternatively, is it possible to 'clone' my sim? Or maybe ask for a replacement sim for my 'faulty' one, and then use both... not at the same time, obviously.

T-Mobile UK used to offer this service, back when it was One2One, but to Business Users only. The benefits were that people could have a SIM in their mobile and one in their car phone, however for two reasons it was stopped. Firstly the car handsets never really took off, and secondly and probably more obviously security reasons.
As far as I'm aware, the other UK networks are of the same standing.

Also, if you clone your card and the network detects two users, it will disable one of the sim cards. (In theory anyway - I don't know if people have created a "workaround")

Indeed, T-Mobile says you need to switch one phone off. Otherwise the first phone logged on will stay logged on. Which is unfortunate. You'd wish the phone you have with you to get the connection even if you forgot to switch the other one off.
I still have to go pick mine up, so I don't know exactly how it works. They did tell me that I will get 2 new SIMs. Not sure why, but that might be an indication that you cannot simply clone any SIM.
Duo SIM
Enquired with T-Mobile in the UK... They don't do the Duo SIM. Very annoying. I remeber that back in Holland every provider (used to) do them; car phone & mobile. My dad had one (eh... two?). Does anybody know if it's possible to clone a USIM?
I have an Ameo (Athena), an M3100 and a laptop with a UMTS card built in, so I could do with not having to swap SIMs every time... SIM is getting a bit worn...

Sim Card don't work

Hi, i have a new HTC One X + and the simcard doesnt work. Means the Phone dont recognise that i already insert a simcard.
I google this issu and found a lot of people with same problem but i never find the solution for that
any one got a idea?
Ps.: My phone is not rootet and i have the newest software from HTC (original 4.1.1 and sense 4+)

Have you tried popping open the tray and wiggling the card and then simply sliding it back in? Whenever my phone doesn't detect a sim card I just restart it. When it still doesn't work I pop it out and in again. It's annoying, but it doesn't happen often enough to really bother me. If it is of concern, see if your local store can help you out.

i already try this 10-20 times... the support hotline say that this bug is known and they solve it with the next patch -.-
But i hope i can use my phone faster than the next htc patch.... anyone got an idea?
I thought I read somewhere that the store you got the phone from might be of some help in this regard if it is an issue with the tray. Of course, if you've been hearing that it is predominantly a software issue, then I have no advice to offer. Sorry.
If the yellowish part of your sim card has mostly faded off,it won't work, ask for a new sim card gonna cost bout 5 or 10 Rupees.

i already try 3-4 different cards. My card works on other phones so it must be somethign with the phone.
Mine did that a couple months after I bought it ... took it back to the store and they sent it away for some kind of software update. It still did it a few times after that, although it's probably been a couple of months now with no occurrences at all. Some people say to put some tape on the back of the card to make it fit tighter. So I don't know if it's software or hardware. Although when it happened, if I put the phone in airplane mode and back out again, it worked fine, so that leads me to believe it really is software.

New Blue HTC One (AT&T) Sim Card Tray Issues...

Guys,
I picked up a Blue 32GB HTC One from Best Buy yesterday for $599.99 off contact, got them to price match AT&T...Anyways, I went ahead and got S-Off on the device, but then when I went to put in my SIM card, I noticed that it was really hard to eject the sim card. I finally got it out, but the tray won't go back in all the way. I played with it a bunch last night and got it better, but it still sticks out. I have had a bunch of dev editions of the One and never had this issue, it was always flush or sunk in a little bit, never stuck out. There are also a few minor nicks in the blue around the sim card tray slot. Has anyone else had this problem? I was thinking about going to try to exchange it today, but I need to put the stock software back on it first, which takes an hour or so to complete the process. I'm not sure they will give me a replacement or not, I suppose I could tell them the SIM card isn't detected some of the time. I don't think they were really supposed to price match the blue version at 599.99 as they are the only ones carrying it. I'm afraid they won't give me a replacement at the same price. Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
Y2J
They give you a 14 day exchange policy so you shouldn't have an issue exchanging it since you have a hardware issue from what it sounds.

I am out of options now. I love this phone and hate to see what its doing now.
Please please somebody help...
Send it in for repair with Samsung.
It seems like it may be a problem with the SIM card part. You may want to try replacing it yourself, but no guarantees.

The ROM looks fabulous but no SIM card
I thinking replacing the SIM Slot is the only option.
Somehow it works ..
Good News
I ordered a replacement SIM Slot from Amazon.
Took 3 weeks to come from China. It took me some time to replace it correctly and a precautionary step.
I am back on Jelly Bean (Stock and Unrooted)
Popped in SIM Card. and Memory card.
It really worked :0
BAD news :
Some how I think the new SIM Slot didnt like my memroy card..
and it fried it.
So I lost most of my pics from last 1 year
Was your memory card in the slot as you reassembled the back? It breaks every time. It happened to me twice.

I think when I reconnected the SIM Slot on Main motherboard something fried the card.
never expected this to happen.
No sim card weird solution in my case
I had this problem for a week and got rid of this problem by un-installing the following
1. Facebook
2. Whats App Messenger
3. AVG antivirus
After un-installing each one of them, shutdown the phone, restart the phone after 30 Sec and check whether your NO SIM problem disappears. not install one more application and go on.
Ive had the same problem with my note i717 and have factory reset, tried a new sim card, and also swapped out the sim card reader with the one from my wifes i717 with no luck. Her phone still works fine (with my sim reader) and mine still has the same issue (with her sim reader installed). It started out only showing the error maybe once every few days then became much more frequent. Now it seems to happen only a few minutes after restarting. Does anyone think this is an issue with the mainboard?
Some people have reported luck with just replacing the SIM card and memory card reader. That didn't work for me.
I ended up buying a used motherboard on eBay for about $80 and replaced the entire thing myself. Thankfully the modular construction of the Note makes it really easy - did it in under 1/2 an hour. Problem solved.
The only thing I stupidly forgot to do is pull is backup the internal hard drive... so I ended up having to put the old board back in and pull everything off of it and then switch the new board back again. *sigh*
thanks!
My phone got wet so i dunked it in rice and it turned on the next day but got the no sim card problem. I followed Your advice and it worked! Thanks a lot!! Saved me from the extra stress and costs.

[Q] Sony Warranty Help!!

Hello XDA,
I am in a bit of a sticky position. I have a Sony Xperia Z2 D6503. I purchased the phone from a 3rd party seller on Amazon. The purchase was made around 3 months ago. With the £350 purchase i got standard earphones, charger and original box with the phone. The best thing the phone came with and i assume came with every Sony smartphone is a 2 year warranty.
This warranty entitles me to give the phone back and they repair the problem. Problems only being something i could not have caused, like overheating motherboard.. Or whatever.
The problem i have is my phone wont allow me to use any SIM card. It did when i first got it then after a couple of weeks the phone stopped sending or receiving phone calls and text messages . The weird thing is the 3G internet still works when i have my SIM inserted in the phone.
I obviously got worried and started searching why it happened & how can i possibly fix this. The research i done gave me the conclusion of my phones IMEI is blocked. So straight away i contacted Amazon and they gave the money back and i still have the phone (strangely)
I am now wondering weather i can use my Sony warranty and see if they will repair the phone even though it may be blocked. I have found out that i will not get in trouble as i have legit receipts that show i bought this phone before it was blocked and i have a reasonable reason why i have it.
Would Sony repair or replace my phone even if the IMEI is blocked? Considering the phone is in warranty and i have receipts to prove the purchase.
Please can you give me other possible solutions to this annoying problem.
Kind Regards,
HaroonZ2
I don't see why you shouldn't go for it, the alternative is to end up with an expensive media player.
But hasn't the seller contacted you yet? I find this pretty strange, but there's no reason to have any legal troubles if the third party didn't do anything about it.

The people I bought the phone from stopped replying over Amazon. So as policy amazon had to repay the money. However, they don't care what I do with the phone.
That's what I had in mind. I have a great media player. And £350. But imagine if I had a working sony Z2 and £350. You can't blame me for trying..
Cheers
Go to Sony and tell them about your problem, you've got nothing to lose.
Your point is valid, you've done nothing wrong, and even if they refuse to repair it on warranty, you get to keep the phone.

Have you tried going to Settings> Wireless & Networks > More...> Internet settings (Download settings for internet and MMS). Also SIM cards do fail from time to time. I would get another from your carrier and then check that your APN settings are correct.

Yes, this was one of the many things I have tried. Ive even considered changing the IMEI.. But I won't.
I have ran in to a dead end with this problem.. It seems like there is not much more I can do apart from taking a risk and giving it too Sony.
Cheers,
Haroon
I have a warranty concern as well, though it isn't an issue with a blocked IMEI.
I tried to pull out the sim tray today and it got stuck and in my frustration (and having no other solution) I used tweezers to pull it forcefully out. Pretty sure it got stuck on the contacts of the MB and bent them, since the tray won't go back in now. Now I can see this as kind of my fault, but not really right? I didn't do anything to make it get stuck and I'm not sure how else I'd have been able to access the sim slot. I obviously won't tell them I forced it out, but any chance they'd fix it on warranty?

I have a warranty concern as well, though it isn't an issue with a blocked IMEI.
I tried to pull out the sim tray today and it got stuck and in my frustration (and having no other solution) I used tweezers to pull it forcefully out. Pretty sure it got stuck on the contacts of the MB and bent them, since the tray won't go back in now. Now I can see this as kind of my fault, but not really right? I'm sure they'll charge you for that.
They consider these type of fault, as user misuse.

Yes that is something you will have to pay for. Like I said, Sons free warranty deal is only applied when the phone has an internal or external fault cased by the phone itself. Something a consumer damaged breaches the Sony warranty. Therefore you would have to pay some fee.
I don't know what you would pay; it may be something like a charge for sony looking at the phone then extra charge for it to be repaired.
