Back to Stock but still Rooted?? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How's it going guys. Well I used Odin to go back to stock and it did pass and everything, but the phone is still rooted! Wth?? This didn't happen before so I'm a bit confused right now.
Funny thing is, all the apps that I erased are now back, but Superuser is still there....
Right now, i'm on firmware 2.1 Update-1
The files I used was
Stock-i500-VZW-System.tar.md5
Help would be appreciated!

I'm not sure if that file is an official vzw file or one that was put together by someone else if I were to guess that is the case and the file you flashed contains root...if it still says your on 2.1 update one I think your odin file was really old?
where did you get that tar file?
What are you trying to accomplish exactly?

trying to just back to stock after updating the ClockWorkMod and totally f'ing up my phone. Every time I send text messages now, people receive blank texts :/

Did you ever find a solution?
I'm basically having the same problem nightmare.. same firmware version on my phone now, did you ever figure out what the problem was/how to fix it??

You need PIT and DL09 package. Will get you to DL09 without root. Upon first boot don't sign into google (so the market doesn't go on an installing spree) and do ota's to froyo.
good day.

Need a little help with this. Please

I have a quite larger problem, I installed the JP3 rom from Eugene and Bionix. Well I revereted back to a nandroid of Vibrant9, thats where my problems began. After the nandroid was finished I seen the GTI9000 screen and it stayed there so I tried to revert back to stock with odin. I havedone every stock 2.1 odin they have posted and they go into a bootloop boot all the way up for about 20 seconds and then reboot. So I managed to get my update.zip pushed to my internal and without having to reroot the phone I got into clockwork mod installed Franken Twiz it works great other than the new problems. My signal either shows to be all or nothing no more individual bars being full, and my market place with download maybe 5 apps and wont download anything else after that. Did I do something wrong I followed all directions to a T help is needed Please.

You could try downloading lookout from the market. It will scan the apps you have. I personally havent seen a virus but im careful what I load.
not to be rude but in the OP it states that my market place no longer works becase of this. none of the antivirus apps actually work they have never been tested with a real virus. if someone can post the apk for a zip file containing that apk for lookout we can test to see if it really works

[Q] help please need to unbrick before returning from deployment

OK to get started a little background, I was very deep into rooting and roms on my original droid, so I do know a lot of the basics. I got the fascinate in last october, dropped it and cracked the screen in december at that point I decided what could I really do to the phone hacking thats worse than physical damage, so I started using Odin and flashing the risky froyo files that were out then. I dont remember which one, did one and the phone started saying -e:cant mount /dev/blockst111. Ive tried the i500 vzw stock recovery.tar and the modem and something else of those files through odin to no avail. Im trying to do all of this recovery stuff from afghanistan also. When I try to use those files through odin it always says invalid hash value. file download is almost impossible here but I was able to get the 2.2 atlas .pit and CI500_VZW_ED05_FROYO_REL.tar (1).md5 from another marine. please help oh and I dont have the stock cable out here either. Thanks for any help guys.
I got it ! sorry for the cry for help but all I had to do was mod the file name and voila there it was.
Glad you got it fixed. Watch yours and each others backs over there and come home safely.
Brwnsuperman has all files to stock and gingerbread upgrade if you ever need fix again.

Can't update stock rom, "Communication Failed" from Software Update

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who is having this problem but I've searched around and can't fix the issue. I recently had CM9 but went back to complete stock, on 2.3.4 (which isn't up to date). When I go to update from the settings menu, I get a communication failed text box, which then in turn makes me wait 24 hours before checking again.
I've done multiple battery pulls and stopped the running process for the software update to no avail. Can anyone help me with this?
Remember, I'm on the stock AT&T rom.

Not rooted. I just want to get my phone up to date so when the ICS update rolls out I'll be able to get it.

I think others were having trouble updating as well... I'd suggest flashing a custom rom, or if you want to stay with stock, using Entropy's Back to Stock packages (I'm not going to link that for you cause I'm too lazy and you should be able to find it.)

Might give it a try. Trouble is, not having a rooted phone and going back to stock means I lose all applications and data with them. Eh. Thanks
Download stock rom (if u can get a tar file it most likely has everything u need, do some Googling just make sure its for the i777). Get mobile odin pro. Use mobile odin pro to flash the .tar and it gives u the option to root right there within the app before u flash. Profit. Just giving my two cents and what worked for me . If u do this though and don't remove any system apps it should allow u to ota upgrade. Haven't tried myself but that sounds like it'd work fine.

I already did this except for rooting about 3 weeks ago. From what you're saying, if I root my phone from its current state I should be able to receive OTA updates? I'm willing to root just to see but I don't see how that would fix the "communication failed" errors for updates.

FYI I have a rooted stock ROM, and I'm having difficulty doing an OTA update also. Different error (mine is "interrupted" after reboot). I posted it here because it seemed more related to that thread and I had other Q's about the process.
You guys are in panic mode, wait till we actually get an ANNOUNCEMENT for ICS from AT&T, then try to go back to stock using the methods we have.
No reason to do so right now, since AT&T will probably take a long time before pushing it.
We have a possible sources dropping on March 15th from i9100 but you will be required to be rooted to flash the possible ICS Roms that will be available after that date.

I don't think you understand. First of all, in no way am I in panic mode. Secondly, my phone is a few updates behind since I just recently brought it back to stock from CM7. All I am trying to do is bring it up to date.

ota issue
You might want to check the (Guide)How to flash custom binaries.....on this forum. Creepycrawly has posted a reply towards the end of the thread that might be helpful. Believe its on one of the last two pages.
As has been said many times in other threads, even on a stock ROM if you have rooted and removed even one item of bloatware or made any other mods you will not be able to download an OTA update.
I have not rooted my phone. And as I said earlier, I restored my phone to complete stock meaning no bloatware has been removed. I'm still at a loss for what to do

You were on CM9 (in a later post you say CM7), but you went back to stock UCKH7. Now you are unable to update over the air to UCKK6. You are mainly interested in having the phone ready to receive the update over the air to ICS, whenever that occurs. You have not rooted the phone since you returned to stock but you are willing to try root if it will help the update happen. You were also concerned about loosing apps and their data since you are not rooted. I recapped all this because on stock you should be able to run the update. To help you solve the problem, need to know all the facts.
I've done the following, although it has been several months ago, about a week or two after UCKK6 first released. From running a custom rom, I did a wipe data/factory reset, flashed stock UCKH7 plus root, and ran the over the air update to UCKK6 successfully, retaining root on UCKK6. I just did this to test it out, so after completing the test, I used my nandroid backup to return to the custom rom I was on.
I would assume that you did a wipe data/factory reset either before or after you flashed back to stock? If not, there could be traces left over that could interfere with the update process. I'm not sure if there could be traces left even after a wipe data/factory reset, but the Cyanogen Mod file structure is so very different than stock that it wouldn't be inconceivable.
Next, I would wonder how soon after flashing back to stock you tried to run the update, and if not immediately, what action could have possibly placed or removed files that would intefere with the process.
I'm pretty certain that if you were to wipe data/factory reset with a format and then flash stock again, and then try to run the update immediately, it would succeed. So there has to be something in the file system preventing it. You may not find it easy to correct that something manually. You may just have to do a wipe data/factory reset, and maybe a format, and then start all over with a fresh install.
Of course, that is the reason for rooting first. Root, then back up everything with titanium backup, SMS backup, export contacts, etc. and save all that to your computer. Then you can restore stuff after.
Thanks creepy,
I'm in the process of doing what you said. I rooted my phone, backed up everything I thought needs to be backed up and flashed the stock rom (2.3.4 kernel version 2.6.35.7 baseband version I777UCKH7). I still need to do a factory format in order to see if that will fix the update problem.
Question. Is the firmware version(s) above the latest AT&T software? According to Kies, it is. But I am reading other places that the latest software is android 2.3.6.
Did exactly as creepy stated. Brought the phone back to stock software and did a factory reset. Without ANY customization and as soon as the phone booted up, I did the software update and had the same thing, "Communication failed" (says there is an update available but servers are busy).
I give up.
Well, I don't have any new ideas. Maybe if I get some time in the next few days I'll try it on my phone to see what happens. It has been a while since I tried it. Maybe the server behaves differently now?

From what I've been reading on AT&T forums (http://forums.att.com/t5/Samsung/Sa...2-3-6-OTA-update-now-live/td-p/2996495/page/3) I don't think so. I've been trying every combination I can think of to make this thing work but I honestly have no idea. I was extremely surprised when I brought the phone back to complete stock and no root and still couldn't get the update.
If ICS ever comes to AT&T GS2, I'll wait a month or so to keep trying then I might resort to going to an AT&T store to get a replacement. Who knows

[Q] Did ODIN brick my phone?

Hey All,
I've been looking for an answer for over a day now, but can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. Here's what happened:
I had flashed to ICS 4.0.3 on my Samsung Vibrant about a month ago and everything was working great until yesterday when I woke up to find the "Encryption Unsuccessful" screen on my phone. I did a little research to find out that there is a fix to this and to NOT reset the phone. So, I took the steps to ODIN the phone back to Stock Eclair in hopes that starting from the beginning again would be easiest way to fix the problem. The ODIN process finished completely fine (PASSED), but now when it reboots, I only get to the first "Vibrant" screen, then it shows the battery and spinning circle icon. Apparently it won't fully reboot. I've tried to ODIN it back to stock several times, and I keep getting the same results. I can get it into download mode and plugged into my computer, but that's about it.
From the posts I've read, it sounds like my phone might still be okay to recover since it does power up, but I can't seem to find a solution to get it fully back up and running.
Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Maybe your JFD file is corruption. Check with your MD5 sum if there any error or mismatch.. Just give you an idea.BTW what Odin are u using. I recommend Odin 1.7 I stay away the older Odin or the newer Odin
You are screwed.
Sorry to tell you this but i had the exact same problem and found no solution whatsoever to fix the phone. I finally gave up and bought a Galaxy Nexus. You can try flashing Eugene's Unbrickable Froyo Rom which is flashable through odin as a .tar package along with the pit file. You might be able to fix it but i highly doubt it. I flashed Eugene's rom and got the same results as you described. By any chance did you click "Reset Phone" when the "Encryption Unsuccessful" showed up? If so well yeah your phone is pretty much paperweight as of now...until someone finds a solution. Like you i am also able to access download mode. So i guess there may be a way to fix your phone. Not saying it's impossible...hopefully someone finds a solution soon.
Here is the link to Euguene's rom: http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=8
Good luck.
OP, what ROM were you running (specifically. Not just ICS 4.0.3-what is the name of the ROM)? Also what kernel?
Since you are not the only one this happened to, I would like to know the above and see if it correlates to the others that this happened to in the Vibrant section. I'll post the same in their threads too.
Check here out for a possible solution/workaround.
Replacement Vibrant Coming
Thanks for your recommendations/help guys.
I decided to go to T-Mobile and complain and they are sending me a replacement phone. Apparently it's still under warranty, so it won't cost me anything, and if my data is lost, then so be it...at least all my contacts will still be in tact through my Google account.
Merio - I did NOT hit the Reset Button when I saw the Encryption Unsuccessful screen. Before doing anything I did a little research and I found a forum here on xda that said to not hit that button, and tried to explain a way to fix it using the Heimdall One-Click. Basically it sounded like I'd be flashing back to a Gingerbread ROM. So, instead I just went ahead and tried to flash back to stock Eclair. The results of that were obviously not good.
Woodrube - I was running the Passion 13 ROM (ICS 4.0.3). Was really enjoying it until I got the Encryption "Screen of Death"
I don't know what Kernel it was, actually, I don't really know what a Kernel is...
Thanks again guys. Hopefully I'll be up and running on my replacement phone soon!

Need help, droped phone, crack in glass, have siyah kernel, need stock for insurance

Hi!
i need some reasurance from you guys, been coming here for years... always felt quite comfortable while flashing... but, ive never gone back to stock
ive got a galaxy s2, live in germany had a stock EPLUS branded firmware... ive upgraded via kies to 4.0.3... then flashed the siyah kernel for root and other nice things...
yesterday while filming a video at the main river i droped my phone and it has a crack in the glass going from the bottom right corner to about halfway up the left side... phone works, screen and touchscreen work... but its annoying to see it and i have an extra insurance that offers repair if possible and replacement if necesary... so why not take advantage of it? hehe
now the only thing im worried about is, that i have a yellow triangle when booting and im pretty sure the repair guys will complain and refuse to fix it when they see it...
im currently downloading the stock 4.0.3 firmware for my carrier (eplus-germany) from sammobile (388mb)....
my question is: what is the best method of installing that firmware and if i do so, will my data be wiped or is there a way of only re-flashing the stock kernel?
also when the stock kernel is back on my phone, will the yellow triangle go away? oh.. and can the repair guys tell there was a moded kernel on the phone?
k, enough stupid questions, i hope someone finds the time and patience to answer
thx in advance!

Since everything is functional i suggest you to use
Triangle away to remove yellow triangle
Then install Chainfire's mobile ODIN/Nornal PC ODIN and flash your Kernel (zimage from your firmware)
Then take special care to remove all rooted apps to avoid detection ...Now your mobile is stock
ah ok.... thx.... ive seen triangle away program in the forum, so i download that, use it, and triangle is gone... ive used ODIN before when CWM messed up and bricked my phone, to reinstall kernel....
and from the package im currently downloading i flash zimage via ODIN.... sounds easy enough.... download is done in 8min... ill try it and report back
ok, yellow triangle is gone now for the next step
hmmm, downloaed the file.... ive got a big I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100EPLLP5_HOME.tar.md5 file... inside that file ive got various other files, including the zimage..... ive extracted it, but odin only wants .md5 or .tar files..... if i give him the whole file, im assuming it will flash everything, which i dont want... ( or do i? )
and since im only going for the zimage..... in which does it go... pda or phone?

I've never used it but if it has the option it should. You can check afterwards by going to setting->about phone and then looking at the kernel version which should no longer have siyah in the name.
After that, be sure to remove all files that depend upon root access and lastley to remove the superuser app and binary. I'm not entirely sure but I believe that superSU has an option for self cleanup as the last step of the process. I would keep CWM and Titanium backup as my last apps then look for anything installed as root using Titanium backup (aside from superuser and CWM), then uninstall Titanium, reboot into CWM and clear the caches, finally uninstall CWM (delete it at the command line using adb if you know how and also look for other apps you might have missed), and lastly uninstall superuser. SuperSU might have an option to unroot and uninstall itself. I have the paid version so I don't know if the free one has it.
Almost forgot; you'lle want to delete the clockwork mod folders that are created when you do nandroid backups.
Of course it would be easier just to make a nandroid backup, pull it off the phone using adb (or wifi if you're afraid of adb), then just flash that entire md5 or tar file you have and when you get the phone back put the backup on it again and restore from it. If you do it this way you can format your system, data, and cache before pushing the big file on. You would also want to look over the contents of the sdcard and remove anything that would give away the presence of rooted app, for example root explorer extracts things to a folder called speedsoftware or something. Titanium Backup also keeps a folder on the phone and you'de want to remove that.
If you're okay with adb then it would be fine to just do a nandroid backup and then pull the entire contents of /sdcard/ to your computer then remove your external_sd before sending it in... and backing up, Nandroid, to the external_sd would save the time of pulling the data of a nandroid backup from it now that I think of it. If you do this; ensuring you have all your photos, music, etc, then wipe the data, system and cache, you can pretty much remove your external_sd and delete what's on /sdcard/ and push the big file you have using Odin... you just need to make sure you have a backup of everything you've deleted so you can put it all back. To be clear though, a Nandroid backup won't save the contents of your /sdcard/ files. You'de need to do that yourself.
So there's a few scenarios... Good luck, and wait for more advice from others before proceeding in case I missed something.
