[Q] [Close to brick] - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Oook... it seems i'm not allowed to post into Development session due to my low number of post, so as suggested by VBullettin i'm posting into Q&A....
Really need your help guys.
I've played a bit today with my GT 10.1 3G and i ended up installing Bonsai ROM.
First boot ok, i setup all the stuff and rebooted.
Second boot, bootloop.
Then the tragedy.... i probably did something wrong and so actually this is my situation:
CWM 4.0.0.4 correctly accessible
all the partitions have been formatted
i'm unable to push any custom rom to the phone using adb as it seems that /sdcard, which actually is a link to /data/media, cannot be mounted properly by CWM or something similar
Even tried a factory restore through ODIN but when i enter downloading mode ODIN does not recognize the device and i see a usb drivers errors in WIN7. (drivers are installed correctly, i was able to use ODIN at the beginning).
Any hint?
I'd be happy both being able to install a custom MOD or even a factory restore, i just want to stay away from completely bricking the device - and it seems i'm not that far....
thanks in advance to anyone,
Cris

CWM 4.0.0.4 correctly accessible! Thats good news, all isn't lost.
1)Restore from a backup you created.
2)Try the touchwiz ROM quite popular in development forum and flash with odin actually for GT 10.1 3G
3) To push a custom rom into the device (why?) follow the steps, incase its update.zip
Now in CWM xxx recovery mode connect it to your pc,
STARt>run>cmd> direct to the adb containing pathway like:
C:\ cd Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\(type)adb devices
Hopefully your device will be detected,
Now push the restore.img (in case you backed up)
or anything into the sdcard( the push file should be in adb.exe folder) via PC:
adb start-server
adb push xxx.zip /sdcard/
4)Factory restore should be attempted from recovery mode, there is specifically an option for this plus dalvik cache clear all cache clear;NOT ODIN
Seriously bro its time to flash a factory ROM be it 3.0 or 3.1 if available via ODIN. I won't recommend flashing any custom ROM now.

Thanks man.
I was finally able to flash via ODIN HC 3.1.
The only minor issue is that is a P7510 version, so the mobile network 3g is not working. Minor issue as i didn't buy a SIM for data traffic yet.
Still, if anyone could point me to a ODIN compatible ROM for 7500, i'd be grateful.

[Q] HOWTO copy a new in recovery mode

Hi all,
I did a bad work with my galaxy tab. I've flashed it with a new ROM but this ROM is not working correctly, I can't see correctly my display probably due to a bad driver inside the build. My problem is that I've no more a working ROM on my galaxytab and I can't reflash it.
USB seems not working correctly, so device is powered on but I can't access to it from Windows.
Is there a way to to upload a file to internal storage in recovery mode or download mode?
Thanks
Stefano
Stefano,
Depends what recovery you have as recovery...stock recovery no you can't, clockwork recovery yes you can. From download you can use Odin.
What model Tab do you have? Wifi, 3G? What version firmware were you on before the problem and what do you want to restore to?
Ciao
Hi, yes I've Clockwork installed but how I can 'upload' a file using Odin? The standard guide shows that Odin3 is used only to upload a .tar.md5 file to root the phone....
Thanks

That's why i asked what sort of tab you have and what you want to flash your tab to..
There are odin files available to go back to 3.0.1, to go to Early Touchwiz, both for Wifi only tabs...if you are really stuck it is often beneficial to go all the way back to 3.0.1 then go in whatever direction you like.
Or, if the tab is sort of working even tho the display is corrupt you might be able to connect and use adb to push a rom to the sdcard and then flash from clockwork. More info Stefano, what have you got by way of tab, and where do you want to get to?
Download the samsung drivers on your computer . Then install android sdk so you can use the adb if you haven't already. Then you can adb to push a rom to your device and flash.
I'll try ASAP...I'll also add ROM and device details.
I've a Samsung Galaxy TAB 10.1 GT-P7500

Formatted my phone, not it won't boot!

Well let me start off by saying that I "updated" CMW through ROM manager. Big mistake it was actually a downgrade after using CMW Touch. So I decided to change it back, but for some reason the version that I was directed to use from ROM Manager had problems seeing files and directories.
So...I couldn't get access to the zip to flash again.
With my OCD and having a ton of useless directories and files already on my phone I said screw it, mounted my USB and copied my files over to my PC and then FORMATTED the entire phone.
Then installed CMW Touch through Odin v1.85. Success...
But my phone is stuck at the boot logo. Is there a way to flash a custom ROM from this point via Odin?
I am NOT worried about the flash counter. I just want my phone fixed

Yes, I can....
I thought I could mount usb storage there and drag over a ROM and then flash it, but my computer isn't detecting it when it's mounted, or I'm doing something wrong...?
Edit: I wanted to add the fact that my phone is showing up in my computer's device manager as Samsung Android ADB Interface...So is there some commands I can do through ADB to push a ROM onto my phone?
Thanks for your help Joe.

Trying adb push 'ROM' /sdcard right now....
Well I got the ROM onto my card, but when I flash it I'm getting an error Status 7....
"assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" ||, then it repeats and says quincyatt.... I'm thinking since this in the nightly build of CM9 that my device should be named quincyatt and it's not since I don't have CMW for this ROM???
No one?
I would use either strategy:
1. Get the Gingerbread Odin 1Click package. This will install driver, Odin, then format and flash GB rom.
2. Use Kies ICS upgrade site, go to tools, then do an emergency firmware installation.
Then flash CWM kernel for recovery.
If you can push twrp to you phone, then flash version 2.2.1.1. You will be able to install cm9 successfully through that recovery. If you don't want to do that, then push a different ROM to your phone and flash that.
Excuse me for diverting the thread a little, but . . .
@froidroid:
I don't use that recovery -- what is the difference/advantage of it over CWM? TIA
I would say just a personal preference ultimately. The reason I suggested it for him was so he could flash cm9. Cm9 won't flash with his current recovery. I would definitely suggest giving it a try. The UI is amazing and there are a few more options that aren't available in cwm.
Did I mention a nandroid takes less than 5 minutes? Best part imho
Thats a gooood selling point.
At this point I'd say flash stock through Odin and start over...as long as you've copied over your important files...

LoL Thanks guys, I got it.
What I was able to do was push the newest version of CWM onto my phone via ADB. But it was tricky because it came as a stand-alone file (recovery.img) so I did some searching to find an actual Update.zip for CWM and replaced the recovery.img in that zip with the new recovery.img
Then pushed with ADB (adb push update.zip /sdcard) and updated

[Q] Accidentally formatted /sdcard on my tab - is it bricked?

Hello, I think I might have bricked my Galaxy tab 10.1 while trying to upgrade it to CM10.1.
During the usual wiping of the cache, Dalvik, /system etc, I accidentally formatted the /sdcard.
Now I am not sure how can I copy a custom ROM and flash it again.
I can boot into Recovery and ODIN can still identify my tab. I am using Windows 7.
Any help?? Please!
Is there any way a tar file can be created from the ROM zips and flashed through ODIN?
Hi dear friend!
First of all, please don't panic
Second: you can always flash your Galaxy Tab with stock ICS / HC ROM via Odin
Third: if you can boot into CWM and also know how to use ADB, you can adb push a custom ROM like CM10.1 into your tablet and flash it via recovery...
Fourth: please don't hesitate if you have any other questions you can't find their answers on the forum. we're always here to help you
Good Luck!
Important Edit: I don't understand why you wipe those partitions manually before each flashing? you just have to flash data and cache from the main menu... (??!!??)
Thanks a lot for the assurance. Being a novice (sort of) I dont know how to use ADB. But I will search around in these forums.
One thing I wanted to mention here is that I cannot see my Tab in the windows explorer. Should this be a hindrance to using ADB?
I read somewhere that before installing CM10.1, the /system has to be flushed also. Of course I didn't want to do it on /sdcard. That was a stupid mistake.
Could you tell me how to flash a ROM via ODIN, please. I have been trying to find this out, but haven't been able to so far.
Esp because the ROMs are delivered in the *.zip format and ODIN takes only *.tar files.
I had taken backup of my stock ROM long back. There are 6 files (boot.img, recovery.img, nandroid.md5, cache.ext4.tar, data.ext4.tar, system.ext4.tar).
Which one of these should be used through ODIN?
Thanks a lot for the help so far. Much appreciated.
Ok I have been able to solve this problem after a bit of fiddling with ADB.
There is an excellent guide that I found online - http://www.googleymind.com/2011/11/guide-so-you-think-you-bricked-your.html#.UV8bRaUZyuI
It explains clearly how to use ADB and what exactly needs to be done.
I hope it helps someone else who experiences the same problem in future.
Thanks.

[Q]How to Recover photos from phone stuck at Boot Logo before factory reset?

Hi,
I am aware of the threads suggesting how to fix the phone stuck at the Samsung Boot Logo. Do factory reset is one option, but this would erase all the personal data in the phone including the photos.
I was able to get into the recovery mode and download mode of the phone. I tried wipe cache partition option in the recovery mode but still no joy. (I couldn't find the option for Wipe dalvik cache though)
I was able to detect the phone in recovery mode via ADB using USB cable. But I was struggling to get ADB to connect with the phone using the command prompt. So I was unable to recover the data/photos in the phone before going down the route of factory reset it.
I saw a few software on the internet claiming they are able retrieve photos/data from soft bricked phone. Can anyone confirm/suggest whether these claims are true? (e.g. REMO Recover for android and Yodot Recover)
thanks in advance.
cheers.

Have you tried mounting your phones storage (also known as USB storage) in the mounts and storage menu (CWM recovery)? (Assuming you have custom recovery) Works everytime with my phone and no adb drivers required! If you haven't install custom recovery, you can google philz recovery and flash it via ODIN. Then you should be able to mount your phone's storage and retrieve and important photos and etc. Factory reset won't delete any photos and videos. It will delete ALL apps and related data and settings, but not important pictures and etc. But try what I suggested first before attempting factory reset.
Oh... I wish I can use CWM recovery. However, this S2 phone has not been rooted. So it is on original firmware. Can I still root it then install CWM recovery without losing media data?
Also, I thought factory reset will clear the phone to factory status, i.e. no photos and any media file? (more precisely, I think there is no option to just do factory reset without wiping data)
I remember that's what happened to my S4 before when testing root/roms (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+S4+-+Wipe+Data+-+Factory+Reset/23217)

yes, you can still root your phone and won't lose your data. If you are on stock jb 4.1.2, you can install siyah kernel 6.0b5 on your phone via ODIN (that means you need to download the tar file one here: http://d-h.st/frK). Your phone should be rooted and have CWM recovery after that. If you have 4.0.4 stock ics, you can install siyah 5.0.1 onto your phone (download link: http://d-h.st/Bcf) via ODIN.
In odin, select the tar file under PDA then click start. Your phone should reboot automatically once done
Nice one!!
I successfully flash siyah 5.0.1 onto the phone and managed to get back the media files I wanted to backup using USB mass storage function in Recovery mode.
But then I got another question. I guess it is because the stock ROM installed version does not play nicely with the kernel. (As I cannot remember which android version it has before I flash Siyah kernel onto it). It just won't boot up. It went passed the Samsung boot screen (with yellow triangle), then the Siyah logo flashed a few times, then the screen went black out, the phone was super hot and I have to take the battery out to turn it off.
I haven't tried to factory reset in Siyah's recovery mode yet, but before I do it, I suspect that it won't work, as I assume the android ROM version will still be the same even if I factory reset it. Should I go get another ROM to flash instead? if so, which one is recommended (I'd love to go to lollipop if that's available.)
As I never played with custom kernel/recovery, can someone point me to the right direction? Should I flash another more up-to-date kernel before I try to flash a lollipop ROM onto it? (I believe Siyaho 5.0.1 is only good for ICS?)
Newbie here. I have been reading thru different threads
and for someone like me who have zero idea about rooting phones
or about all the terms used.. I somehow got to the point of
1. Downloaded latest version of ODIN
2. Reinstalled USB Drivers for Mobile phone in my laptop.
3. Still looking for Siyah? or CWM to flash on my phone?

>stuck on boot LOOP with triangle thing
>RECOVERY MODE (not possible)
>DOWNLOAD MODE (accessible)
wanted to retrieve all the photos/videos saved from internal storage
don't care if phone will get fix or not (since I already have a new one)
But I need all the photos, & if possible contacts and other data saved there.
PLEASE I NEED HELP
I went to the service center and asked if they can help me atleast access CWM recovery
to use USB MOUNT on device but all they've told me over and over is
"we will wipe your phone to fix it"
"not possible to recover anything,we'll just reformat your phone to fix it"

Thanks. I tried again the link on the Siyah 5.0.1 you added earlier but there is only one download button (blue one) and again nothing extracted.
I have a question though. Since my phone is rooted already before and working fine,
and 2years later got stuck to bootloop and only have DOWNLOAD MODE access,
do I still root my phone again with the link you have provided (siyah)
or should I just flash my phone with a CWM recovery to access USB MOUNT on my phone?
also, from the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...lz-cwm6-stock-kernel-cwm6-root-exfat-t1877270)
which one should I flash my phone with? I am reading thru it, for like 3 times already

Did you read this bit:
What kernel to choose:
The important part is the Kernel code:
XWLPX-NEE
Kernel code is in red (LPX), for this example, you need an LPX ROM. However, often, you can mix kernels when they are close: LPF kernel with LPG ROM...
NEE code doesn't matter at all, I add it for reference. It is the CSC
XW: mixed, often doesn't matter for close regions. For example, XW and XX are often interchangeable. However, mixing a BU with an XW ROM or inversly, sometimes works, but often ends in a bootloop. In that case, either boot into recovery or download mode to reflash

The last three letters before the region code is important. Choose the one that is closest to yours (look at the build number in the about device menu).
As for the first question, it's all up to you. Flashing siyah kernel or CWM will both give you a recovery, so either one will allow you to access your phone storage in the mounts menu. Remember that Android version is important as you can't flash a jellybean kernel on ics and vice versa.
gsstudios
Edit: Also, NEVER extract kernel zips or tar files. They are ready to be flashed. There should be a few folders and other files in it that makes up the kernel image.

I guess it will be hard for me to do that since I can't really check what kernel I had before
I've absolutely no access to my device nor open "ABOUT DEVICE" menu.
Tried to see if a clue might be at the back of my phone but alas, nothing there.
All i know for sure is my device was on ICS. will try my luck on ICS compatible CWM or Siyah. thanks again!

the problem is that my phone isn't detecting any network and service at all, and i think my sim is locked.

Logs would be appreciated. Get adb installed on your computer and authorize your device (good ol usb debugging etc) and I want you to do "adb shell ls /data/misc/wifi" and post the output. Also, have you tried reporting this in the thread of the rom? Have you tried another rom? If you're in the urgent need for a device, why would you use a custom operating system for it? I mean, what's the worst that could happen, a vital function doesn't work. Also, try to use an older version of the rom. Those are just my $0.02.

Yes I've tried another Rom, and still the same problem (no network and no signal).

First, have you verified that your IMEI didn't get erased?
When you flashed the original firmware, you said it bootlooped and wouldn't boot into android system, did you try booting to stock recovery then factory reset and wipe cache partition? Sometimes this is necessary after flashing with Odin.

The firmware that you flashed, was it older than the stock version that was already on the device? Most Samsung devices that were made after the introduction of 4.4 Kit Kat can't be downgraded. In other words, if your device already had stock lollipop then you can't flash Kit Kat but you can flash lollipop or Marshmallow, if you go up to marshmallow, you can't go back to lollipop but you can go to nougat, if you go up to nougat then you can't go back to marshmallow and so on and so on.
You can stay where you are or step forward but you can't step backward. This probably isn't your issue.
Are you certain that the firmware you are flashing is for your exact model number?

it's passing the first screen that says "Samsung Galaksy S5" and stuck on the second screen that says only "Samsung" or "Galaxy" (depends on the andriod version 4.4.2/7.1.1).
I'm without any cellular device for 5 days now.
Please help me with this annoying thing.

Are you certain that the firmware you are flashing is for your exact model number?

If you flashed 7.1.1, it probably upgraded your bootloader (wiping your personal data in the process). If it upgraded bootloader, you probably can't go back to 4.4.2. I described this in my earlier reply.
Try booting to stock recovery then factory reset and wipe cache partition, then boot into download mode and flash 7.1.1, after flashing, if it doesn't boot, boot to stock recovery again and factory reset and wipe cache. If that doesn't work then maybe flashing the PIT along with the 7.1.1 firmware might do it. I would not use the PIT unless, the last resort, I can cause worse issues if something goes wrong.

I want to reflect your instructions to see that I understand them correctly with your permission
Try booting to stock recovery then factory reset and wipe cache partition, then boot into download mode and flash 7.1.1,
-You mean to flash to 4.4.2 in Download mode and then within Recovery mode to to do factory reset and wipe cache partition, and after that to go to Download mode and flash 7.1.1.
And if that won't work to PIT along with the 7.1.1 firmware- how to that, from where do I get the PIT?

No, don't flash 4.4.2.
1) boot to recovery, factory reset and wipe cache.
2) boot to download mode, flash 7.1.1.
3) if it doesn't boot after flashing 7.1.1, boot to recovery, factory reset and wipe cache.
4) if it still doesn't work, try flashing 7.1.1 again but this time find the PIT file for your specific model number and flash it along with 7.1.1 in Odin.
To find a copy of your PIT, do a Google search for:
"PIT for (your model number)"
If that doesn't find it, you'll have to find someone here at XDA that has your exact device and has theirs rooted, get them to pull a copy of the PIT from their device using Terminal Emulator or adb shell, then get them to upload it for you so you can download the copy and use it.
You'll have to do some searching to find out how to pull the PIT.

I explained where to get it if you don't find it on the web, did you read my entire post? I will not repeat myself when the answer is in the post above yours. That's how you got in this mess, you don't thoroughly read and pay attention to the details.

Few questions...
1. Was this a clean install? All partitions wiped?
2. Are you sure u got the Japanese varient ROM?
3. Did you try this one ? https://sourceforge.net/projects/re...v5.8.3-20170518-kltekdi-Official.zip/download maybe the build was bad that u installed. This is more recent.

You find them by looking around or use the XDA search feature, the one that says "search all forums", type your model number there, you should find other threads about your device in the results, look through those threads and find someone that has been active recently and has a rooted device like yours, then get them to pull a copy.
Sorry, but you're not gonna get this kind of answer just handed to you, you're gonna have to do the hard work for yourself, we don't spoonfeed, we give the information needed to help you find the answer YOURSELF, it is YOUR device, if you want it fixed then you should be willing to dig deep for answers.
