What is the most accurate voice dialer app? - HTC EVO 3D

Hello,
I'm not doing well with the integrated voice dialer. It is nice that it is free but not very accurate ( have about 400 contacts and often it just tries to dial stuff on in my contacts). I also get frustrated it dials the wrong number without verification that it has the right number.
The MS command was very accurate. It might seem crazy but if that is made by a third party, do they make a droid version? I'm very new to android so I appreciate the info.

Try Vlingo. I find that it is generally more accurate than the free google voice recognition.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vlingo.client

+1 for vlingo. I feel the same way about MS Voice Command, in comparison to the stock voice search on android.

Thanks - I just tried VLINGO - maybe I don't have it set up properly. I want something just MS Voice command where I press the button on my headset and it I say "call john doe at mobile" and it properly selects the name from my contacts and then says "call john doe on mobile" and I say yes and it dials.
VLINGO kept on coming up with on screen prompts. I don't want to look at my phone while I'm driving.

The first time you trigger it (by holding the search button), it will ask you some crap. Just go through that once, and it won't do it again. Next time you hit it, it will just pop up a screen that says "Listening..." At that point just say, "Call homer simpson mobile" and it will do so. It has been remarkably accurate for me. And you can even have it do other things than dial (send text to..., etc.).
Overall, I like it about as well as MS voice command, and it does more.
Also, no need to hit "go" when you're done speaking. Just wait a second and it will figure it out. The less interaction with the screen, the better, in my opinion.

Thanks - I think my mistake was setting it for vlingo inCar. I still could use your help a bit further. I don't know how to have it give me a verbal confirmation vs. on screen. I also don't know how to have it search my contacts and not the web/yellow pages. When I'm calling via BT, I know who I want to call.

I haven't used it, but here is how you setup verbal confirmations: open the app, click menu, settings, click advanced, and check "text to speech (beta)."
I've never had mine search the web. Are you using "Call..." or just saying the person's name? Try saying "call peter griffin at home" instead of just "peter griffin" and see if that works better for you. There must be a setting to disable that, because I've never had it search the web when I was trying to dial someone. However, I don't use it with bluetooth very often.
Dave

It's doing the same thing for me when I try to call a contact, if I don't say @ mobile or @ work. If I say @ mobile or @ work then it works pretty good. The deal breaker for me is that while using it if I hit the call/end button on my bluetooth it just shuts off the bluetooth earpiece and doesn't hang up the call like the standard dialer does.

[Q] Does VOIP work on G-Tablet

Hi Guys,
I have updated the device to TnT 2.0, thanks to the develoeprs and XDA forum. However, I am facing an issue in terms of calling over WiFi. Are calls over Skype, Fring or Nimbuzz working? Neither me nor a person whom I am calling can hear over Skype even thought the call connects smoothly in Skype. In Fring I here the jittery noise and no voice communication exchange possible.
Are you guys facing the same issue? Any fix for this ?
Thanks really appreciate all the help.
Regards,
Neil
Skype is working for sure, with the usual quality. My jawbone just took a sh!t so I can't say for sure that you can hear the party you're calling. But they can hear me, so I'm pretty confident that all is well.
Skype works it just mutes on first dial so you gotta unmute first.
FWIW at least on sipdroid and the built-in speaker, I cannot hear the other party during a call. However, they can hear me. I haven't tried skype yet though.

VOIP calls on G-Tablet with Sipdroid + Google Voice
After weeks of trying different apps to be able to make and receive calls on the G-Tablet I've had success. (Rooted G-Tab running TnT Litev3.1.0, Android 2.2)
The info is from a post I came across at http://androidforums.com/android-applications/252222-google-voice-pbxes-org-sipdroid-free-calls.html.
The poster references the following blog which also has some helpful information for setting up correctly:
http://blog.kylehasegawa.com/google-voice-voip-on-android-just-got-a-lot-easier-with-pbxes-peering
Read through it but basically it is:
Get a google voice number and then install google voice app on G-Tablet
When you are in google voice on your computer click on "settings" and then the "phone" tab. Make sure that "Google Chat" has a check mark to the left of it indicating that it is a forwarding option. If it is not listed there, you need to enable Google Chat which you can do in Gmail (it's an option on the left side of your inbox).
Install sipdroid (free in market)
Run sipdroid and click the link at the bottom that says new PBX linked to my google voice
Verify your google voice account email is correct and enter your google voice password. Then enter a pbxes.org password which can be anything you want it to be.
Once you do that, pbxes and sipdroid will auto configure everything else.
To make calls you will need to use a headset plugged into your GTablet in order to hear your caller. My experience is that on the GTablet side I could hear the caller perfectly. They could hear me well, but there was a slight echo where they would hear themselves after they spoke.

I realize this post is a bit old but it was all I could find so I thought I'd try and get an answer anyways...
So I followed the instructions above and it worked great. After, I installed another dialer app (stupid) which didn't work so I uninstalled it. Afterwards, GV no longer worked. I uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck so I uninstalled sipdroid.
After reinstalling that, I no longer had the option to auto config. When I click the button and put in a new PBX name, I get a message stating that the trunk is already in use. I attempted to configure manually but when I put in the user name and password I originally typed it doesn't appear to log into the server and I get a 'Mobile network not available' error.
I can't seem to remove all the previous sipdroid connections and I can't find any folders to delete after uninstalling it. I've cleared data but when reinstalling the app, I am no longer asked for my google voice number and the web site doesn't help much with manual configuration.
I created another google voice account but even after I reinstall GV and configure it using the new number, the SIPDROID still tells me the old VG account name. I assume it pulls it from elsewhere in the system.
So can anyone tell me how to manually configure this thing or how to remove all the previous sipdroid settings so I can start from scratch?

Google Voice take over everything? Look here....

Just wanted to write this up real fast and hopefully help a few people. I myself, coming from the EVO, did it also. Ya know, just pressing the "next" button and not paying attention to what I was actually hitting next to. I have seen quite a few people and threads about this so hopefully this helps. I had to dig around for answers, lol.
If you were just pressing next, next, next like I was, you will have found yourself with Google Voice taking over your texts and phone calls. And I did not like it at all. When my phone rang, I had to answer and press 1 to accept the call. WTH is that? Anyway, to get it back right you will need to log on to your computer to google.com/voice. In the top right hand corner you will see the settings button (where the arrow is pointing) and click on voice setting. Select the phone tab. Uncheck the boxes that Google has registered your numbers and integrated and you will be good to go. Uninstall and re-install Google Voice if you would like without hitting the integration button on the first step. Hopefully Google will change this soon.
EDIT: Read down with the next few posts, a lot of good info that has been said.

I did the same thing too. I was so upset they ****ed up Google Voice this way. I mean integration is nice, but NOT taking over my text messaging app and phone number etc.
Once I figured out what I had done I was able to get it to work NORMALLY as in before Google screwed **** up. I do hope that Google fixes this "Apple Takeover" crap.
Just FYI - any changes made with Google Voice will reflect as account changes in Sprint.com now.
Or take the time and set it up right and enjoy the awesomeness only Google voice integration on Sprint can give you.
Here is a post of mine I did before with links.
I love Google Voice integration. I've posted these links in other threads but they are good reads on why you are better off actually integrating and how to still use your default messaging apps.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...e-integration-i-did-it-and-heres-how-it-went/
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ice-sprint-integration-questions-and-answers/
Here are some other cool things I'm able to do now myself. I can make outbound and inbound calls on my google talk using my cell number on my computer wherever I have internet access. I bought an OBI110 and hooked up a phone to it so now I have free VOIP calls whenever I answer or receive calls to my CELL number on this phone. Now I don't have to give anyone a different number and I can still control who gets to reach me at what time of the day. I can answer and receive texts on my computer, laptop, tablet all using my cell number. All my texts are backed up and searchable to my google voice account (even texts I send from my phone using one of the regular messaging apps, not google voice app)
My opinion. Take the time and setup integration right. It's one MAJOR advantage of being an Android user on Sprint now. You're missing out on way more by not setting it up than you would by setting it up.
Oh and for those who don't want to lose your old Google Voice Number, Google lets you keep additional numbers at $20 per number.

Well I think for me, and many others, it wasn't the same set up as when I set it up for the Evo or whatever phone the user had. Yes we should have read and paid attention more closely, but the fact is we didn't and I'm sure there will be plenty more also. Thank you for the info and links, very interesting

I almost did the same thing when I was setting up the app. I think they shouldve gone about putting that option in there a different way. If you're just going through it quick and pressing next you're screwed.
Off to check out those links... I tinkered with GV for hours trying to only use it for voicemail and use my stock or handcent for SMS/MMS. I kind of got it to work until I put the GV widget up to see the transcribed voicemail. The widget ended up displaying the SMS!
Finally I said screw it. Ditched the Sprint integration and setup a new number from some far away prefix. Now its great, GV for voicemail and stock or handcent for SMS/MMS.
Until GV can handle MMS and have SMS popups with screen off, I'm not using it except for phone call management.
thanks for the links.
can HTC install a trackball on this thing?
In order to continue to receive text messages to your handset's Messaging app, you have to check "Receive text messages on this phone" under the Google Voice online phone settings.
I don't mind it now
I like the way Google voice is integrated, what i hated was the call screening. I finally was able to get to a computer and fix that problem and fix my text message problem as well. I use handcent, so i turn off the notification but kept the pop-up so i don't receive two notifications but i still have the pop-up i like for quick response.
Like already said, log into your Google voice account and mess with the settings until you get it how you want it. you can allow text to be received on your phone and you can turn off the call screening.
I didn't notice this until people started asking "where are you?" and "what phone are you using?"
I was like... uhhh..... my cellphone...? "Well its a weird number."
Walked into Sprint, asked what I did and the girl looked at me kind of weird. Eventually it clicked (I smacked myself in the head) and we figured out what it was (after two hard resets). She let me use her computer quick and we disabled it.
I like how it took over the phone, but without support for MMS/ picture messaging, I don't wanna use it.
Like many others, all I want GV to do is handle my voicemail. Unfortunately, GV wants to take over my life. I set the flag "Allow SMS on the phone" but they still went to GV. I've actually had to log out of GV in order to get my SMS in the messaging app on my phone. GRRR!
Use full GV integration, use your sprint number as your GV number, do NOT install the GV app, then setup it correctly on the website and you will have SMS, MMS and picture messaging just fine. (FROM your cell phone only, can't send MMS from GV website or any other phone you link)
It doesn't do MMS/Picture messaging if you choose "option 2", use your GV as your sprint. Also, if you do option 2, sprint can't give you the unlimited mobile to mobile because the database uses prefixes to sort which are mobile, and GV numbers show as landlines.
So, yes, if you do your integration correctly, you get your sprint number, GV features, MMS, SMS. GV voicemail, etc.

this is a problem by the app. Everytime you install the app it unchecks the receive text notifications. So anytime you sign out and sign back in the app (which should be rarely) you have to go back and recheck that option.

That incorrect, option 2 still allows for any mobile to ANY mobile. If you go to your google account on the web and your phone number says "sprint integrated" sprint servers know now to include this number as part of your plan for incoming and outgoing. Only difference is mms WILL have you original number, but both numbers are optimized for your plan.

You can send them to your email, or have them come in as text notifications.
Since I switched 2 phone over we've used zero minutes on our plan, except for the any mobile to any moible minutes, this seems more than enough reason to stay using it and not care about the quirks. It means I can drop to a lower plan and save money!
Using the google voice app for texts isn't that bad. Now that I'm used to it I like how everything is sorted by time received and then grouped into conversations, plus voicemail thrown into there. Its a one stop shop.It is great for work, we use just our personal cell phones for communication, I only have to check one place.
Call screening was the first thing I turned off, it was such a horrible idea. It's like they forgot we had that newfangled fancy thing called caller id on our phones.

I stopped that issue way before I bought an E3D. I used it on the OG Evo for seperating calls by dishing out Google number instead of my real cell number. Its kind of annoying how Google voice works though. I kind of see it as a privacy issue especially when it comes to texts and voicemail. Open your eyes people. Google isn't are cell phone company, so why give out such privacy.... To each is own.
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
i set mine up manually instead of the quick integration step. GV is my voicemail and i use my regular number to make calls and text. if i need to text or call using my GV number, i have a widget to to do that.
Yea once I re installed google voice and is asked permission to take over my voice mail I exited out then went back into the beginning and selected to skip integration. I am not interested in google taking over my sprint matters as well.

[Guide][ALL ROMS] Properly Set Up Google Voice For Voicemail

So, let's be honest here. Those of us who use Google Voice know how awesome it is, but we also know how woefully pathetic the setup is, and how easy it is to configure something you didn't mean to configure.
That's where I come in, with yet another clear-cut guide that's aimed squarely at newcomers who want to use Google Voice but have been burned by it before or have heard horror stories.
First and foremost, I'd like to mention that this guide is pretty much directed at those who ONLY want to use Google Voice for Voicemail (no Sprint integration etc). For AOSP users who are sick and tired of the phantom voicemail notification and just general problems with VVM, Google Voice is a fantastic solution that genuinely works.
Google Voice is extremely powerful and can do quite a few other things, but for the purpose of my trademark simplicity, I will only go over this.
So before we begin, let's start with a couple thing you'll be needing.
Stuff You'll Need:
~ An Android phone running any ROM
~ About 3 minutes of spare time.
-----------------------
Alright! Let's begin. (Please excuse the massive screenshots! qHD is as qHD does ) Also, I am doing this on MIUI. Although it may look different, it should not be any different on a Sense or AOSP/CM ROM.
1. Go ahead and grab Google Voice from the market. (Market Link)
2. Open it up, and this is what we see!
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

}
STOP.
So, for the purposes of what we want to do, we do NOT want Sprint integration. For people who just want voicemail, this has caused a lot of headaches. If you are interested to know more about GVoice/Sprint integration, please read here: Sprint w/ Google Voice Integration)
For now, be sure to click "Skip".
3. The next screen will show up, asking you what Google account your voicemail will be set up under.
Pick the account.
3a. [MIUI/AOSP Users Only!] If you are using a MIUI or another AOSP-based ROM (such as CM) this action will trigger the Access Request function.
Be sure to tap "Allow"!
4. Once you allow (if the above step applies to you), you'll then see this screen.
Tap "Next".
5. We then come to a screen that asks us how we want Google Voice to interact with our phone calls.
So, you might be asking what these options do. If you're only looking to set up voicemail, please skip on down to the bright blue line that says "I'm only looking for voicemail".
Use Google Voice to make all calls - This option enables the ability for Google Voice to intercept all outgoing calls and route them through your Google Voice number. This feature is primarily aimed at those who are on a limited plan as far as minutes go. Your Google Voice number will always be local to your area, so what happens is that the number you dial out is dialed using your Google Voice number. Confusing? Let me explain it this way. (Follow the colors, it will help.)
Your number is 555-555-5555.
Your Google Voice number is 555-333-8888.
You choose this option.
You dial your buddy's number (650-444-4444).
Google Voice intercepts this outgoing call. It makes your number dial your Google Voice number, and then when it connects, your Google Voice number dials your buddy's number.
So, on your buddy's end, the call will be coming from your Google voice number, and even though your buddy is long distance, because your Google Voice number is in your area code, you're only going to use your regular minutes to call them.
Do not use Google Voice to make any calls - Google Voice will NOT intercept your outgoing calls in any way. This is the option we want if we are only setting up our voicemail and no other features.
Only use Google Voice for international calls - This option means that Google Voice will only intercept your outgoing call if you are dialing an international number. Why would you want this? Because Google Voice offers international calling credit. For instance, my girlfriend was on holiday in France for a couple of months, and rather than dealing with calling cards, I purchased Google Voice credit at 10 cents per minute. That way, all I had to do was add her international mobile number into my Android Contacts phonebook (making sure I had the country code preceding the number) and any time I dialed it, Google Voice automatically routed my call through my Google Voice number, which meant it only cost me 10 cents per minute to call her rather than the absorbitant amount that Sprint would have asked, and it was all conveniently and seamlessly done from my smartphone.
Ask every time I make a call - This option means Google Voice will prompt you every time you make an outgoing call, asking if you'd like to complete it with Google Voice.
---------------------------
"I'm only looking for voicemail".
Remember, for the sake of only setting up our voicemail, we'll only pick Do not use Google Voice to make any calls.
Continue on.
6. Once we pick the above option, we see this screen.
Tap "Next".
7. We see this screen next.
This screen tells us that we must dial this provisioning number to give Google the ability to handle our voicemail system. Instead of clicking the blue hyperlink, just click Configure. (we'll get the option to dial that next).
8. It takes us to our call settings, where we are asked to pick our Voicemail service.
Pick "Google Voice".
9. This screen pops up.
This is where we tap the blue highlighted text with out provisioning number in it. It will take us to the dialer and fill in the digits. Simply Call that number. You'll here a few beeps, and then it will hang up. This means that it was successful. Once it hangs up, hit "back".
Heads Up: It may still prompt you to dial the provisioning number. Simply hit "Ok" and make sure that the voicemail provider is Google Voice. As long as you've already successfully dialed the provisioning number, you're all set. Hit "Back" until you see Google Voice again.
10. You'll see this screen here.
This tells us that our inbox will stay sync'd through data. Click "Finish"!
11. Our voicemails/text messages will now show up as and when we recieve them. For advanced options such as setting up your greeting message, be sure to check out the online interface at https://www.google.com/voice.
And that's it!

Very nice guide! I have a quick question and a problem with GV I want to see if anyone else has experienced. First, is all of the setup reversible by uninstalling GV? For instance if you follow the set up exactly like you did, uninstalling will take the phone back to normal right? Same if you choose Sprint Integration?
Now my problem. I have been using GV for a while on my Sprint Evo 3D. I didn't choose Sprint Integration in the set up because I wanted full control over my original number, so I chose "Ask every time" which works fine (I use my Sprint number for personal calls, GV number for my business line). I am running Warm Rom (still sense 3.0 rls. one). I have in the past ran a couple different Alpha versions of the rom and have had this problem occasionally. So the problem is I will select a number from my recent calls list and select send, then use google voice, and then the phone will dial a completely different number (usually a random number out of my phone book I haven't called in a very long time). It will also happen if I choose not to use GV too. Very random, not very consistent at all. Also, it sometimes will do the same thing if I select a number from my phone book but not nearly as often. Anyone else experience this? I assume that some other app is maybe interfering, or something in the rom itself but really don't have the time to reset and start over. Actually going to wait for ICS and do some experiments then. Thanks for any help with this.

Anyone else experience this? I assume that some other app is maybe interfering, or something in the rom itself but really don't have the time to reset and start over. Actually going to wait for ICS and do some experiments then. Thanks for any help with this.

I wish I could help. I haven't run Warm in a long long time. Maybe you might want to ask in the Warm thread?
For all the times I dialed my girlfriend's number for when she was in France, it always connected to her, but then again, I only ever used MIUI with that aspect.
The guide worked great for me. Do you know of a way to reverse this so we could use sprints visual voicemail? Not saying I do but someone might.
I was about to ask that. I am finally back on sense...

I figured out how to change it back to sprints voicemail system. Dial *73 hit send wait for it to disconnect. Then dial *38 and wait for the disconnect. Then change the settings for voicemail back to my carrier.
My visual voicemail is now working.

This is a fantastic guide--too bad I probably messed something up earlier . . . I previously had a failed attempt at setting up Voice to replace VVM which wasn't working at the time. I got VVM working, so I just deactivated the features related to capturing my voicemail and sending them to my cell. This included obtaining a Voice phone number and setting it up to forward to my cell.
I just now followed the directions in the OP and everything worked up to the step where I click the link and dial the number. I get a message to the effect that the code/number provided is invalid.
Perhaps I need to ask Google Voice Help about this, but is there another step I can take in order to complete the conversion to using Voice for my voicemail?
-----------------------------
I get the same error when I try to use the "Activate Google Voicemail on this phone" link on the Google Voice site from my PC.
-----------------------------
It turns out that having created a Google voice number fouled things up. Setting my phone's number as my Google voice number fixed my issues.
Thank You
This deserves a sticky. I have fought with this for awhile and it was all due to not following the 'Skip' option when logging in to GV. Really appreciate your effort. I can finally choose which number to call from again and my peeps will actually answer my calls based on the area code.
I need help with my Google voice and re-integrating my Sprint mobile number with it. I guess a while back I un-integrated the number and now it wont let me re-integrate it again. I don't want anything to do with the Google voice number, I want to use my Sprint number for everything but every time I try to enable it, it gives me an error and I heard its because I had un-integrated it before. Any way around this? I have some more information below that might help you help me
When I try to change my Google voice number to my mobile number, I put it my sprint number and click on option 1 which is Use your sprint mobile number with Google voice, I click continue and get the following message: "Unfortunately, Google voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled." It is currently showing the number Google voice gave me.
When I click on check eligibility for sprint integration (using my mobile number) under "forward calls to" and click on option 1, verify my phone, it tells me the following: Unfortunately, Google voice cannot be enabled on this Sprint phone. Please contact sprint for more details as to why this cannot be enabled. I did this and they told me to try the following day but its the same thing over and over again.
Activating Google voice mail on this phone DOES work but its useless without the full integration.
Any ideas on how to fix this is very appreciated. I am regretting the day I un-integrated it.
Thanks!

9. This screen pops up.
This is where we tap the blue highlighted text with out provisioning number in it. It will take us to the dialer and fill in the digits. Simply Call that number. You'll here a few beeps, and then it will hang up. This means that it was successful. Once it hangs up, hit "back".

It's been over 5 minutes of just silence. No beeps.
Nice guide.. Thx
I wish I would have seen this guide last night. Well, before I finally broke down And installed GV. I think I probably didn't do it this way, but I'm afraid to just clear data and uninstall/reinstall for fear it'll mess something up.
Any tips on safe uninstall of this?
Much thanks.

[Q] Google voice actions. Used to work, not anymore?

I'm on CM10, and a while ago, I used to be able to go through Google Now, say "Google" which would bring up the voice input. Then I could say something like "call >restaurant< in >city<" and it would call them.
Now, it always brings up only people from my contacts list. And it gives me web results that show the restaurant below that. Is there any way to get the original function back? It was awesome.

[Q] Google Voice Search not finding contacts

My phone is synced with both a Google account and an Exchange account. I have contacts on both and can see them find in "Contacts" application.
However, when I use Google Voice Search (the little microphone on home screen) and say Call Bob or Send Text to Bob, it does not work. In the stock ICS rom, it used to do random stuff like searching web for a random business. I've since flashed Houstonn's JB ROM. Now I see that my voice command is transcribed perfectly i.e. when I say Call Bob Buster, I see the text "Call Bob Buster", but it just says Contact not found and gives me a link to "find contact". If I use that link and type in Bob Buster, it finds the contact.
So, the transcribing is perfect, plain text search works, but they using voice search to dial does not work. What gives? Same thing happens with Google Contacts and Exchange Contacts.
Any one else encounter this? Any workarounds? Thanks in advance.
Voice Control Works
Sorry to reply to my own post, but after I posted the above, It hit me that I should try another voice assistant that uses Google Voice Search engine/api. So I tried the Voice Control (Test). I've tried it in the past with stock ICS ROM without much success. However, in the JB ROM, it works great for almost all my contacts. So, it appears that the voice search engine is greatly improved in JB, but the the app/interface is some how broken.
I guess I'll go pay $1.99 to buy the full version of Voice Control.
EDIT: --Further Info--
First, I just figured out that there is an "Edit" button on this forum, so didn't have to make a new reply. Sorry about that.
I guess I was on a roll. After posting above, it occurred to me that there is an "offline voice engine" in JB. So I made sure that the offline data is downloaded and turned off wifi and mobile data. Voice Control just plain stopped saying no network available. May be it wasn't using the API properly. But here is the surprising part. I can now call many of my contacts with the call command just fine now (Google Voice Search).
So, I've tested turning data back on and same old problem of "can not find contact". I've repeated this 2-3 times. Same contact can be called when I am offline (no data), but not if I am connected. I guess Google is doing something funky when I am online?
Google Search Update Feb 13
The Google Search update on Feb 13 appears to have mostly fixed this issue. I am at 50-60% success rate in dialing my contacts. But the contacts it previously transcribed correctly, but couldn't find in my contacts are now being transcribed incorrectly. Oh well, I guess it is a step in the right direction.

Just curious, but when you hit the mic button, then tap the menu button for settings, there should be an option to check phone search. Select phone search and see what options are checked off. Make sure contacts is ticked and anything else you want search to look through. If you've already done this, my bad!

Thanks for the pointer. I didn't know about the settings option after hitting the mic button. All the proper things including the Contacts are selected for search.

You may want to try Google Now instead of just voice search. If you're on ICS there are a couple hacked versions around. If back on JB, it's probably already installed. Make sure it's on/active. I've been getting pretty good search results with it (including contacts) and I'm on Slick ROM v6.
