initial impression
So far, so good. I am now able to stream music where I was roaming just an hour ago. They fixed something with this unless I'm having a very lucky moment. This is the first time I have been able to access 3G from my desk since I got the 3D. Fingers crossed

Oh Joy...
Instead of horribly slow 3g speeds, all I get now is "Network Communication Error".
Me thinks that was the last straw.

I feel you..

My speeds actually got WORSE afterwards.

think mine may have too. haven't done any serious tests though.

Considering the PRL is your carriers "Preferred ROAMING List", unless you're actually roaming, this shouldn't have any affect on speeds at all.

I'm in a fringe area and roam pretty regularly. I tried it and it seemed worse until I did "update profile" and did a power off, battery pull, and reboot. Now it seems like it might be improved a little. Someone should do a compare and see how 21079 differs from 21080. I don't think 21079 offered 3G roaming. Does 21080?
Mike

I'm actually getting better downloading speeds I can actually watch a YouTube video using 3g so feels good

Broke my 3g speed record 1.32 dl

Just updated my PRL and my 3G speeds have decreased from an average of 1Mbps down and .65Mbps up to .71Mbps down and .48Mbps. Weird thing is that on the tests before the update, I had 3 bars but on the tests after the update, I had 5-6 bars.

My speed increased quite a bit, this morning I was getting .49Mbps and after the PRL updated I am getting average of 1.22Mbps down, up is atill average of .50Mbps.

I believe this is correct.
I think what everyone else is seeing is known as the placebo effect.....

Def not a placebo effect..I've never achieved speeds this high..not even close..never saw anything higher than .7 mbs and that was if i had a good test ..usually was at .20 mbs ..and I've had speed increases in the past with prl changes so I dunno..and its the first thing a sprint store will do.if you complain about slow speeds

Sadly though sprint has us stuck here especially not that Verizon is no longer "all you can eat" data. Damn you sprint with your unlimited greatness and poor data speeds!

Wow 3g is slow!

This is ridiculous. It's taking like 2 mins to load Google?
I've already done the proxy removal and I'm only getting like 100 kbps. What's going on here??

That's about right for Sprint 3G. It's within the 3G range for Sprint, anyway.
After removing the proxies I went from like 500kbps to 1.3mbps in my house...1-2 bars...sometimes 3....
Today I was in an area that was previously almost a deadzone, no bars but no roaming.....I got 1.5mbps-2.1mbps!??? It was phenomenal. The 4G in that area only netted my like 7mbps, even though 4g in my area (which I cannot get in my house) I've gotten up to 18mbps before.
Call sprint, report deadzones. If nobody tells them they won't do anything.

If you live in the boonies.
It's fast in California.
I live in NYC.
Just did a speed test and got 11 kbps. Pretty sure NYC isn't in the boonies.
Live in Chicago burbs, as I type this, roaming alert came on
On my.EVO 4G don't think I ever saw the roam alert. On this 3VO it roams few times a day. That NEVER used to happen.
3G service has hit the ****ter lately.

3G service when I had my Lotus and Moment were actually impressive for a mobile device...I was surprised.
3G Service the day I got my Evo4G was VERY impressive....and it just declined steadily from there. For a while I thought it was me screwing with the phone too much....but 2 and 2, etc....
The 3G speeds I get on my Evo3D are right in line with the Evo4G and the steady decline in service in my area (probably proportionate to some of the (now) 500,000 android activiations every effing day)....but the radio is like 1-1.5 bars lower than my Evo would average....which sucks. Performance isn't affected unless it's a fringe situation, like the bathroom at work...which sucks, I like to read CNN when I poop, but I digress.
I expect radio updates will help a lot, but, I ain't touchin' any of that until we have some action out of HTC or failing that one of our brilliant devs does what they are bound to do anyway...
...I've gotta admit, I've been F5ing the living fnck out of the two root threads in development and they are fascinating and at times exciting....I recommend it, it's better than the drunken 6-year-old mob mentality that has tended to coalesce in General lately--I haven't even bothered with Q&A....
Man I never thought I'd see the day where I'd salivate over 322 kbps.
If only Verizon would release better phones...

So flash a verizon PRL and watch your usage....once you hit 300mb put back the sprint PRL...it's like you are throttling yourself, lol.
Seriously, if Verizon is that much better where you are do it....where I am Verizon has a stronger signal but they also have MANY MANY MANY times more customers than Sprint, so, their network is way oversold and over utilized....Sprint not so much....so Sprint has weaker signals and faster speeds on average.
In terms of voice, Sprint is the clear winner where I am but for some reason Data is just the worst.
How would I go about flashing a Verizon PRL? I have the PRL file but I'm unsure of how to actually flash it.
Did you try calling Sprint and getting them to reprovision your phone?

My mistake for saying 'flashing', force of habit...
First thing you have to do is get your MSL, you can either call Sprint and ask for it or use the popular method (with CDMA workshop) that's currently around the top of the Dev section... I usually just called for it, but, for geekliness I had to rip it out myself and it was an effin' snap to do, so, just follow those directions to get it...
....then there is a thread floating around here (and/or the Evo4g forum) with a number of Verizon and Verizon/Altell hybrid PRL's.....download a couple...31337 is good I hear
then you punch in some ## codes, load the PRL file, reboot and ***POOF***, you are on verizon--still consuming roaming data and voice--but you aren't limited to 1x....
EDIT: Don't forget to hit "menu:commit changes" to reboot--or you won't make any changes.

Hmm thanks. I already have the MSL, but I don't see anything in the ##3282# to load in a new PRL. Is that the right code?
EDIT:
OK whoa whoa! I got a nice 300 kbps just now. I changed a setting in that menu regarding EVDO. Changed it from CDMA only to Automatic. Lemme revert and see what happens.

359 kbps
4821 kbps WTF?

I used to live in the Des Moines area of Iowa and the 3G was awesome...moved to Chicago and noticed its about dial up...don't know how you guys got/get by on just 3G. The EVO never went off 4G...
What's really sad is I could do speed tests on 3G in IA that are only slightly slower than my 4G tests here.

My 3vo is getting max 126 download and even worse upload. Four people in my family have EVO 4g, they are consistently getting close to 1 mbs and similar uploads. Tried the proxy fix and everything. My speeds are typically better where I live, but are horrible this holiday weekend. Could it be the towers here don't like the 3vo, or should I exchange the phone?
Thanks

Try 2 things before you take it to Sprint:
First, update your PRL and Profile (Under Menu-Options-System Updates) and then hard reset the phone. (Turn it off, pull battery, turn it back on) then test your speeds
If that doesn't work:
Try the MSL fix Here
Make sure to write down your defaults, as I hear Sprint doesn't like it when you mess with that stuff, and set it back if it doesn't help.
If all else fails, go to Sprint, whine or something. Maybe they'll give you an AirRave. I'm just not a fan of having other people fix my problems.
I get same DL as you, upload speed is like 18. Only getting 2-3 bars most of the time even though I pulled up the sprint map and there are supposedly towers all over the place here.

The over the air provisioning is not authenticating your 3g (only 1x speeds)
The fastest and easiest fix is to call sprint tech support and have then perform a HLR RELOAD or refresh on your data profile.
From there, you will go to settings then update profile from your evo
Note: if the hrl reload doesn't work, have tech support "REPROVOSION YOUR DATA PROFILE" (exact words)
Trust me. This works
What happened was when you dis the hands free activation, 3g was not authenticated correctly.
Hit the thanks button if I've helped you
Cheers
I has the same problem all last week, it turns out (God, knows why) but my EVDO setting was CDMA and it had to be set to Automatic - Once I changed this, I was getting much better speeds.
called sprint. they did something and asked me to reset the phone after we hung up. same speeds afterward, 98 down, 70ish up. said they can't do anything else because i am calling from the phone i need service on. i don't have another phone to call from right now so i'll have to call back later and request the reloads mentioned above.
after resetting my phone, i did prl update, profile update and the proxy fix. still getting same speed results.

what speeds are we suppose to be seeing. I'm using speed test.net and my test numbers always change. on 3g i can test it 1 minute apart and get 1.16 Mbps down and then .72 Mbps down......should they be better?

Those are 3g speeds so sounds like authentication for you isn't an issue. Probably just the network where you are.
i would be satisfied with speeds in that range, even if they were sporadic. what i'm getting is .2 mbps down .03 mbps up (or less) consistently. just got .03 down, .11 down and .18 down, on my last three tests.
I am constantly getting 300-400kbps down and 50-150kbps up.
Tried ##786# and performed a data profile reset. Fixed it got great speeds now.

[Q] 00001 prl cannot run speed test [SOLVED]

I've got the 00001 prl loaded via epst and everything seems to work fine, except speed test keeps giving me network communication issues and cannot find a close server. Any ideas?
--edit-- I got it now. I figured I'd try to reload it one more time and for some reason it works now. 300 down and 600-800 up just shot up to 1500 down and 750-850 up! This is mostly for the office where my coverage is total crap. Work should be fun now!

Kool but just so you know that prl is for Verizon. It may not look like your roaming but you are and that unlimited roaming from sprint does have a cap. You may get a huge bill or even get terminated from sprint. Little FYI.

I didn't think sprint charged for roaming. I've only heard of people getting warning letters telling them that they are excessively roaming, then eventually being canceled if they.don't slow it down.

yeah, I'm only using it at work, and I just gotta make sure I limit myself to 25mb of usage each day and I'll stay under 300/month

[Q] Poor data speeds

Not getting good data speeds on sprint network. I have the latest radio update 1.06.00.1216. I'm rooted and s-off. My kids have the iphone and when i run speed net side by side they get 3 to 4 times download speeds. I'm stuck at 125 kbs or less. Any ideas. I have set to automatic and updated prl and profile.
I've heard this complaint before. Not to sound too much like a conspiracy nut, but from all the comments like this, it makes me wonder if Sprint prioritizes iphone traffic to make the iphone experience similar to other carriers. Since you can buy the iphone on other carriers, they do not want to be subpar.

Any speed increase? I'm in my hometown ATM, using 3g for my laptop. Ran 2 speedtests (Temple, TX and Kansas, where Sprint's HQ is).
For Temple I got over 1.5mbps down.
For Kansas I got 2.2mbps down.
My apartment limits my internet to 2mbps down/1mbps up, so it's on par with decent internet speeds. I can surf/play games normally with little lag.

Lol yes it does. Especially on Sprint and especially when you live where I live. If the verizon tower near where I live wasn't included in the roaming list that I have then I would probably not even connect to 1X.
So yes, it does matter.

No it doesn't tell your phone to connect to towers on an order. It's by cellular system.
The only thing you will get out of this is of you are in Baltimore it adds 800smr coverage there.

Is anybody else noticing poor or poorer signal with the PRL 25010?
What ever the previous PRL was it seemed to work well. Sometime this week my service updated with 25010 and i started to notice lower signal in areas that i have always had full signal.
Then on 3 occasions now i have had text messages come all at once..
Example, this morning 11 messages came in all at once. This is bad because where i live is always full bars / great service. For the past few days its been 1 to 3 bars..
Another example. At my office, i get 4G LTE half bars, its been hovering at 1 bar. Then i got an email from someone trying to call me and it goes straight to voice mail. So i called my self using a differnt phone and sure enough.. multiple times it went to voice mail. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue of calls not going thru but i still have what seems to be poorer recieve signal strength.
I did check the back cover and verify its on tight.
Also my data speeds seem slower, on 3G and LTE.. but i would expect this with lower signal anyway, so the two should go hand in hand..

Everything you describe would not be caused by a PRL update. These would be tower issues.
