Why can't SMS be easy? Or maybe I'm just dumb... - HTC EVO 3D

Couple of weird things I've noticed lately. First off, I never use the standard messaging Android app, I use Handcent. I also installed Voice and got it configured. I have 2 main questions, both of which are text related. First off, ever since installing Voice, Voice also now keeps tracks of my text messages. Is there any way to stop this? I have it configured now so that I dont get notifications from Voice, but if I go into the app to check a VM I see all my texts, and that's annoying.
Also, before when I would used to get an MMS (picture, video, whatever), it would connect to 3G to download it, even if I was connect to Wi-Fi. My phone no longer does that. Now if I get an MMS, even something small like 50kb, it takes like almost a whole minuet to download it because I'm pretty sure it's downloaded over 1x (doesn't show the 3G symbol anymore). Anyone know how to change this? I may have changed a setting somewhere, but I can't remember, and this is driving me nuts.

I used the G-Voice app on the 4G but I decided not to install it on the 3D. Using the stock message app is alot easier and have no issues with MMS. I dont get visual voicemail which kinda sucks but I still like it better then opening an app just to get to my texts.

Unless you disabled 3g manually you can just turn your phone on airplane mode and then back off airplane mode, or restart the phone... That's strange though, I'm pretty sure my messages download on 3g and i get them in like 15 seconds...

Go to your Google account in your desktop or mobile browser and disable text messaging from your voice settings. And the whole 3G MMS thing is a known issue I've always had using handcent, especially on my 3D. I never use stock app but since its so reliable because of compatibility issues with the 3VO being so new, it would be wise to go stock until app developers update their apps to support our phones.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how to change it. I've checked everywhere on my Google Voice settings (browser and mobile browser) and I can't find a place to disable Google Voice handling SMS messages.

I was able to verify that something is in fact screwy with my networks. I like the fact that if I'm connected to WiFi my 3G is disabled since it helps conserve battery, but I dislike the fact that this also means that MMS messages are forced to use 1x instead of 3G. I disabled WiFi and tried sending a picture over MMS and it sent just fine over 3G, but as soon as I reconnect to a WiFi network it forces any MMS's to use 1x instead of 3G so they take FOREVER to send/receive. Anyone know if there's a way to change this? I remember on my original EVO running CM6 I never had this problem. 3G remained disabled if WiFi was connected, except it would kick on for MMS messages. Sigh.

you have to uninstall google voice then reinstall. this time when it asks if you want to integrate say no then choose to use just for voicemail on the next screen

Thanks for the help guys. I just spend the last hour trying to get this setup the way I wanted and in the end I decided to completely remove Voice and stick to Sprint's voicemail for now, lol. I'll go back to Voice when we have CM for the 3VO
Still trying to figure out my 3G/MMS problem though Can any of you try it on your phones? While connected to a home/office WiFi network try to send an MMS (picture or whatever) and tell me if 3G comes on to send the message, or if it takes forever to send it.

Further testing: the exact same thing happens if I'm connected to 4G! Damn this sucks! So it's like, if I'm connected to a faster network (Wi-Fi or 4G) then 3G refuses to come on no matter what I do. Makes sense if you want to optimize battery life, but shouldn't it come on if it needs to do something that REQUIRES 3G? Such as send an MMS? -_-

Sorry if this is an ignorant comment, but why would the phone need to switch to 3G or 1X if you're connected via 4G? That seems really wonky to me.

if you watch on the notification toggle page, when you turn on 4g/wifi it actually turns off "mobile network" ie 3g. pretty dumb if you ask me.

I think all CDMA networks are like this, but the reason it needs to switch is because SMS/MMS messages can't be sent through WiFi or 4G.

That's interesting because I actually don't have this problem. If I have 4G or WiFi enabled it still has Mobile network and checked and enabled.
So is it safe to assume that you have the same issue with this phone? Where your MMS messages take forever to send/receive if you're on WiFi or 4G? I swear it never did this when I first got it, but now I'm starting to question that too...

Yes, it's possible to have Voice JUST for voicemails without it interfering with SMS or MMS and STILL keep your number, here's how:

about GV.. i was having similar issues.. it kept showing as my default text app, and no matter what i did with the GV settings, it wouldnt change a thing..
so i started comparing the GV in my phone with my wifes hero.. and when lookin at the version i realized that after i reinstalled all my apps on my phone i updated GV.. bad mistake.. i deleted that version and reinstalled my previous version and all has been well since..
if u want to go back to using GV without the issues, let me know and i can send u the version i have that will work the way u want..

Awesome, thanks for this!
Still going to keep trying to fix this MMS issue though since it's driving me CRAZY! I like the fact that 3G turns off when I'm on WiFi or 4G, but it should turn on briefly to send/receive MMS so I'm not stuck waiting forever while they send/receive over 1x. I'm going to delete Handcent just in case it's what's screwing everything up, but somehow I doubt it.

[Q] wifi calling unlocked note on tmobile?

ok so i bought this phone and it's delightful. I dont get the speeds i would normally get on a native tmobile 4g phone, but most of the time i'm either working or at home so wifi is always available
however, i've recently moved into a new apartment with my fiance and i only get about 1 bar of reception in my bedroom, and pretty much no bars in my living room and bathroom. Unfortunately, it dosen't appear as though this phone has any native wifi calling, and was wondering if anybody had some sort of resolution for this?
Yes i thought of some of the other apps out there but what i dont like is the fact that i either have to subscribe a new number, or there are advertisements before ringing, or how i have to disable an app when i go out because my data connection isn't as fast as a native tmobile 4g, so im kind of in a bind... i really love the phone and would prefer to keep using it, i just wish that i had something that would be able to run as smoothly as any of my previous tmobile android phones...
anyways i know it's probably asking for alot, but if someone has a solution, please let me know, i tried searching but i didn't come up with much
This would be awesome.

I would like to recommend this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ch_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5ndm9pcCJd
It will do everything you are wanting, plus you can make calls and save your minuets even if you have service, if your in an area where your data is fast enough. It integrates with the phone well and even uses the built in dialer.
I bought this app back when i got my first tablet that didn't even have cell capabilities and I've used it on various devices since. i think you will find the call quality is excellent.

Ok, this is like 99% of what i want, i just want people to call my NATIVE phone number to call me when im on wifi.
I dont want to hand out an alternative number, that's my biggest issue at the moment
for example:
if my family is in an accident, and they have my native number listed in their emergency contact, and they try calling, then that could be rather bad...
but yea, if you have any other ideas, i'm all open to it
When you set up your Google Voice number, you put your "native" number in google voice, when someone calls it, your google voice number will ring, the person calling is not aware of your real number... i'll give my google voice number out... 731-412-0080. When you call it, it automatically rings my house and my cellphone and which ever one i pick up on, you will have no clue, all that matters is when you call my google voice number you get me, I have several forwarding filters set up...
You would simply set up your native number calls forward to your Google voice automatically.
So If your native number was 555-121-1234 and I called it, I would be silently fowarded to your GV number and your cell would ring... (google voice it's self is completely free) go here to see: https://www.google.com/voice

I use google voice on that app but the call quality is not decent at all. Ive only used it on wifi and its terrible. Voce gets distored some lag, and even some echoing.
ok so here was my ultimate solution
got the app that was mentioned and also got tasker
i set it so that whenever i would enter my home wireless network exclusively, tasker would make my phone forward calls to my google voice number, which in turn forwarded the calls to my app =)
also set it so that when i leave my network, it would automatically disengage the ipgroove app, so all in all i gotta say it worked out ok, thanks!

if anyone chooses to go this route and there's no wifi calling app in the future, just let me know, it was a wonderful way to get to do what i needed to do, and with the help of tasker, it will auto engage/disengage features, almost as if we did have the native wifi calling feature that the s2 has, but yea, i'd be glad to help anytime =)
Taking up on technologia's offer to help
@tekhnologia: When you are at home connected via wifi, are you forwarding your t-mobile number to your google voice number (perhaps using "conditional call forwarding")?
Otherwise, I think I more or less understand your setup, but a brief list of steps would be awesome!
Thanks for the offer to help.

I am having the same problem...
The settings are located under the dialer and I was able to set GV as my voicemail.
Inbound calls work fine.
Outbound....
This has been a bit frustrating. If I set "Use Google Voice To Make All Calls" under GV settings and then try and make a call it does not do anything. Not even an error (although I assume there is one occurring)
However if I change it to "ask Me every time" then I am able to make outbound calls with my GV number.
I tried other dialers and have had the same experience.
Will keep experimenting for now

Cool. Any luck with using GV for all calls? This is the first phone I have had trouble getting GV working properly.
Hi,
I've been experiencing the exact same issue and found this thread- am using Omega 5.0 but it sounds like it's a rom independent issue.
Have you made any progress? I am also only able to call if I select "ask each time".
I'm having the same issue. I just flashed to the latest LF2 firmware and it's still happening. With the number of Galaxy S3s sold, I'm surprised that more people aren't complaining about this.
Even when I have the app set to "Ask me every time.." the call is still placed with my carrier number. It's a pain in the butt because now people think that I've changed my number and are starting to text my carrier number.
I had no issues with my S2 (Gingerbread or ICS)
My only suggestion is to post a review in the Market explaining this problem. If you see another review that is also having a problem, mark it as helpful.
EDIT: I tried this and it appears to be working!

Well I am still struggling with this one.
I do not think it is a GV + ICS issue because it worked fine on the HTC One X for the two whole weeks I had one.
I feel that it is more likely and issue between the GS3 ROM and GV but I have no idea how to make Samsung aware of it. Especially since GV is only in the US and the phone is international.
I have the Sprint version coming in this week hopefully and I will be able to find some things out.
For now if you have not tried it, I highly recommend checking out GrooVe IP. It works really well I was quite surprised.
Yes, I think it is actually a long standing issue with 7 digit numbers, however it isn't working for me with 10 digit numbers either! Except strangely, if I type a random garbage number it will work, but not work on my existing contact numbers- I've even tried to delete the contact and phone manually and no luck either... do you mind telling me which rom you're using?
I think you two are correct. ICS isn't the problem, it's the GS3 firmware. My Galaxy S2 was running ICS and GV with no problems. And to clarify, with the i9300, we seem to be having two issues:
1. Some people are unable to configure GV for voicemail and,
2. Many of us are unable to make outbound calls using GV
For the first issue, I have had luck by either a) skipping the voicemail portion of the setup and adding voicemail settings manually or b) Installing a backup of GV from my GS2 using Titanium Backup
For the outbound calling issue, I think I fixed it by using the Country code + 10 digit number. So, I guess "11" digit dialing might be a better description for us USA owners.
312-555-1212 FAILS but 1-312-555-1212 is working for me.
Give that a try?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
It's actually an issue with the Google Voice app and the SGS3 Dialer. It used to be that when you configure the Voice mail, it brings up the Phone configuration page in the settings, where you could set it, but in SGS3, the GV app can't bring it up, so you will need to do it manually.
Go into the Dialer and click on the Menu Button, go into Call settings, and there you can configure your Voicemail setting.

I tried to add a 1 or a +1 prefix but still no go. To give more description to the bug, if I reboot the phone, and under "always use GV", the first time I dial, it will create a "call not sent" prompt, but the call will actually go through via GV and function correctly. The second time however, it just fails to respond without any prompt.
Edit: I'm on ZNLE9, XXALF2 built.

Me too...
I'm also running into the "Make all calls" issue. "Ask every time" works perfectly.
I recall a few MIUI roms where out-of-the-box, the dialer app did not allow any third party access and this same issue would happen until you dug around in the call settings to allow access to other apps. Again, the "Ask every time" option worked, but "Make all calls" didn't until that setting was changed.
So, I'm assuming it is indeed an issue with the stock SGS3 rom's dialer application, for the GT-I9300 at least. Hopefully a fix will come soon.
I'm curious to see if "Make all calls" works after flashing a CM9 nightly. Trouble is, I just got this thing and wanna play around for a while before I root it.
I can confirm the same issue, as well. "Ask me everytime" works, but "Use for all calls" doesn't. This is on stock and Omega 5.0 roms.
Has anyone tried CM9 nightly to see if this issue goes away or any other suggestions?

[Q] Can I sent texts/make calls over wifi?

Reprimand me if this has been addressed already and my stupid ass couldn't find it.
I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. EDGE will suffice for simple things such as sms/mms, phone calls (obviously), and web browsing with Opera Mini.
At my house, we have wifi and my phone is always connected to it and signal strength is always excellent. Since I live in the woods, I get no more than 2 or 3 bars of cell service at any given time, if I'm lucky. One or two is the norm.
Can I make calls over Wifi? Or sent text/picture messages? Perhaps I simply don't understand how it works, but a large percentage of the time when I try to reply to a text, it fails and I have to send it repeatedly. Or if someone sends me a picture of some sort. Takes forever to download, if it works at all. Making a phone call is an exercise in futility. Perhaps it has to be done a certain way.
I'm running the latest version of ShoStock2 at the moment, but these problems happen with AOKP, CM9, and Phone Bricker, amongst others.
I'm sure there's apps that allow you to do that. First Google result shows Talkatone. Idk if there's other similar ones/better ones, but you can start there.
As for text, I'm sure there's an app for that too
I used textfree on my iPod. Can't recall if I couldn't send or receive pics though.
For calls, to my understanding, naturally. No. I'd say get something like Skype where you can do VoIP and do all your calls from there on WiFi, as for texts and MMS you really shouldn't have any problems. as far as I'm concerned, texts should be fine, and mms should download via wifi if you are connected. But if it continues to be a problem you could always get Textfree or Whatsapp and get your friends in on that. Its platform wide (literally) and is supported on every device i can think of.
Hit thanks if I've helped you.
Hope you figure out this issue!
You could use text free for texts you just couldn't use your own number or Google voice of course for text and calls. But you can't route your actual cell phone calls and texts over wifi. T-Mobile has that capability but not us on at&t.

Voice calls? YES
SMS? YES
MMS? NO
I thought that Google voice was supposed to start supporting MMS, but not sure when. I have been waiting for a while. I use Groove ip as well.
Whats difference between SMS and MMS? A friend and I are 7 days late and our phones are off.
I had viber but got rid of it cause i wasn't using it. (maybe redownload?)
Also my google voice doesn't let me make calls or send messages? (it says I can do international calls - but I turned it off cause it said I needed money in a "google account" sigh...)

No incoming calls or sms after ota update

Seems I no longer receive inbound calls or sms messages after yesterday's update. Of all the issues this update has caused, I don't see anyone else.having this specific issue. Any of you guru's have a clue on what might be causing this, or how to resolve it?

Profile UPdate, reboot, Profile Update, Reboot.
I had the same issue after I ran LazyPanda, and this fixed it then.
I also had the same thing after LazyPanda. Incoming calls would go straight to VM and no text messages, but once I made a call out everything started working again.

Called Sprint tech support, they pushed the profile and did some other hocus pocus, which resolved this particular issue... now why is the battery draining so fast? hmmm
I have been having this problem since day one. Multiple called to sprint still has not fixed it. Phone works fine in the mornings then by 12 - 1PM I can't get calls/txt. Today's call with sprint the guy said leaving the LTE/CDMA checked in a non LTE area can cause problems. They had me set it to CDMA only as NorCal LTE is not active.

problems
same problems as OP, although i was rooted, with a locked bootloader (just used SuperSU for things like titanium and astro) once the OTA came thru, my phone stopped receiving incoming calls or txt. if i dial out, all my txts start piling in at once. phone calls/vm doesnt. if i goto profile or PRL updates, they start, then i get a vDMClient has stopped working error and closes. if i take it to sprint, they will just deny it b/c its been rooted. any help here? can i get PRL or profile updates that i can put on my SD card and execute that way? also cannot get it to successfully RUU, even back to the same software version 1.22.613

I had to reset my phone completely back to stock...eh I left S-Off...and then I had to go into ##786# and reset the phone in this menu. Once I did that I stopped getting the vDM message. This happened to me at 1am I figured it all out the hard way. You will need your msl#, but you can download msl reader from the play store.

I lost data, calling, and texting after a profile update. I've gotten data and calls back but I still don't get texts.
Best part? EPST doesn't work. At all. I've tried it with my phone stock, with it rooted, and multiple apks from multiple sources with not an ounce of luck.

Yep. Same thing here. My epst would only work when I cleared the data for it and I couldn't make any edit so I reset the Damn phone that way and it magically word 100% after that. I had the problems too after a profile update

Long press mobile network on settings ,sub menu comes up make sure domestic voice and data are checked on.
im s-on according to my bootloader. when i dial ##786# the address book goes away, thinks for a second, then comes back. it doesnt bring up any menu. any advice there? also - my domestic data and voice are checked on.
now, i finally got the RUU to work - i had to fresh install windows 7 and after that, it flashed fine. checked bootloader - s-on and no TAMPERED. which is nice. now its not my problem - this things going back to sprint

That's the exact problem that I'm having. The Sprint Tech I talked to had no idea why it was happening. By any chance, when you go to Settings -> About -> Phone Identity, is username blank?

yes just like that.
i sent it to the sprint repair store. they said 'yep, the update broke your phone, we cant fix it. but we can replace it. give me $35'
i then asked them, if your forced software upgrade broke my phone, WHY do i have to pay you to get a new unit? HTC offered to repair it, if i spend my money mailing it to them, and waiting two-three weeks.
I am totally done with both sprint and htc. once this is fixed, im selling it, cancelling my contracts and buying a samsung on another carrier. its been an entire week of bull**** from both these aweful companies. no one wants to either exchange it, or offer advance exchange. ****ing. stupid.
I had this problem today. The solution is to do a data reset with Sprint tech support with ** and some numbers (didn't write them down) entered from the dialer keypad. It puts you into the info screen where they give you the password to do the reset. Once you reboot the phone it comes up with "hands free activation" message. It will update PRL and /or profile and you will start getting all of the texts that you haven't gotten since the problem began. This process reprovisions the phone. In my case, I did the reset while booted on the most current stock rooted ROM, not sure if you can enter the codes on the dialer when running MeanROM. So....nandroid, factory reset wipe, flash stock rooted, reset data with sprint tech support, provision/activate, boot twrp recovery, restore nandroid or flash your choice of custom ROM. The ROM flash or restore won't overwrite PRL or Profile that you just fixed.

[Q] Issues???

I didn't know where else to ask this so I created this thread to hopefully someone can help resolve my issue. Ok lets begin.
I am having issues with recieving phone calls where I live. I do not get the best of service but it works. Now the odd thing I am facing is I can get 4g outside of my house, literally outside my house. My wife has, unfortunately an iphone, and gets great service inside. She is able to recieve calls and whatnot. I am not. I will get text messages saying why I did not answer and I am not even recieveing these calls. Sometimes turning airplane mode on and off will trigger 4g which is weird but shouldnt affect calls or at least idts. As some will know I did have to Lg Flash tool to return to stock, so maybe my issue lies there, idk.
Now here is where it gets interesting. I am a google Voice user. I will recieve the voicemail but not once did it ring. I do not know if google changed something ever since merging Hangouts with Voice but its weird. I have always faced these issues no matter what phone I have used. If someone can please enlighten me with a solution I would greatly appreciate it. If this is not where to ask, mods please relocate. Thank you.
Edit: I am rooted through the stump method and I use a lot of WiFi on my phone. If that helps.
Make sure your mobile network is set to LTE/CDMA ...and not global.
I've done that and it eventually turns back to global...
Update profile and prl too
I guess I should have been more precise. I know all the basic routines to try and get good service. I am just curious if anyone else faces these issues?
Try wifi calling or maybe complain to sprint and get a free airrave. Also for Google voice there is a bunch of setting you can setup on the Web. Google "Google voice settings" and login and check all the settings. Mine were off and was sending people it didn't know directly to voice-mail.
See that's where my other problem lies... I have satellite internet because that's all that is available in my area. Sprint's airrave doesn't work with satellite internet. I've already tried. WiFi calling is my only option except, doesn't that use my internet data? I only have a set amount I can use a month.
