[Q]Has anyone figured out a way to kill off blur and still have contacts work? - Motorola Droid X2

Hate blur... hate blur, want it completely gone. I've considered the idea of installing 3rd party contacts/dialer combo and then sequentially ripping out every f'n blur apk...
thoughts?
how about using all the AOSP stuff?
either way I want blur to die NOW, i got a nandroid backup that I can softbrick and reload so let's do this shiiit!

I have go dialer and contacts and it works beautiful but still pulls up blur when it's all said and done. Roms are coming...be patient

Why does everyone hate Blur? It's not even that bad. Looks a lot better on this than the older versions. One thing I don't like about it, is the Facebook integration. Messes up with the regular Facebook app, so I can't send messages or use chat..

Because it's bull crap that it's impregnated in every portion of this phone's interface.

this is why. and all that crap wastes a ton of space. I want only the ability to copy contacts from fecebook one at a time when needed. It's fecebook, I don't need that crap polluting my contacts.
I mean, as soon as a few more people get in my google+ circles I won't need any ability to integrate fecebook into my experience, leaving me able to completely rid myself of the useless integration that will waste working memory and contribute to killing my battery.
forgive me for being one of those nerds who went to an OPEN SOURCE platform. I buy a "computerphone" based on specs, not software
as far as blur, if you like that kinda crap, great! but I'm sure motorola has made many dirty rags polishing that bloated turd.
i want to use the launcher of my choice and AOSP dialer/contacts/messaging. I dont wanna waste bandwidth cause I travel alot and sometimes I'm stuck with very very slow data. (the fact that contacts uses data every time I scroll through it just to update pictures is useless and total bullshiiit)
i have some downtime to spend in the airport coming up, so I need something to do. if anyone has found a good way to do this, or at least get halfway there (particularly making the AOSP apps work, and which versions from where to use.) I've not seen anyone have success yet and I've spent days reading post after post after post without finding someone who says "f yeah it works, here's how ya do it, blah blah"

[Q] Suggested apps, widgets, etc

Yea, I could go through each and every post of every thread, bt instead of taking several days to do that, figure I will take the shortcut and get with you guys first.
I will be getting my Thunderbolt by Tuesday, and want to jump right into customizing (a little bit, no unlocking!), and downloading and installing the apps I need!
So my question to everyone, (coming from an Imagio), what apps do you recommend? What widgets? And what about different clocks and other things?
I notice there are some with text clocks and calendars, I would really like that. Is that something easy to install?
And what about modding so that I can throw alot of stuff on the SD card instead of stacking up my phones memory? Any suggestions there?
Same question regarding performance, there are several apps that run in the background, and I hear that they are not able to be shut off (except for what the XDA wiz kids have come up with) in order to save battery life. Is that correct? If so, can I shut them down or remove them?
What about skype, does it come with it installed or not?
Thats all I got for now, I am sure there will be more! So any advice and suggestions would be great.
You guys really helped make my Imagio last this long, looking forward to working with you guys on a brand new phone.

I agree with both of these as they will help you with your batt life a bit.
As for the text clock/calendar, that is also a must have for me (Minimalistic Text) all of these are easy to install just look for them in the market.
Beyond that, i don't do much more to my phone beside using Launcher Pro and the widgets that come with it.
Clock/Weather Widgets: Beautiful Widget or Fancy Widget
Calendar: Agenda Widget
Home screen replacement: ADW or LauncherPro (I prefer ADW)
SMS Replacement App: Handcent SMS
Clock replacement: Alarm Clock Plus*
Ringtone finder: Zedge
Wallpaper finder: Flikie
Email replacement app: K-9 Mail
Browser replacement: Miren Browser
File Browser Replacement: OI File Manager
Weather app: Weather Bug or The Weather Channel
Hope these help!

Install everything in your internal memory. It's MUCH faster than the SD Card. For media (MP3s, videos, etc.) you don't have much of an option unless you unlock it - those go on your SD Card. And even if you unlocked it, I'd still recommend you put them there.

Uninstall as much of the pre-installed software as you can that you won't use. That said, you'll be stuck with most of the bloat. However, it's not really a problem - it's pretty smooth and performs pretty well, stock.
Lastly, BEWARE of anybody who tells you to install a tool like Advanced Task Killer. This tool will NOT speed up your phone - it will just slow you down a bit (probably not enough for you to notice) but it will drain your battery even faster than normal. The battery life on this phone is bad enough - you don't need to make it worse!
For best results and maximum customizations, I suggest you root your phone, if not to load a custom-super-themed-decked-out ROM then at least to load a standard debloat-deodex ROM.

I must disagree, honestly. Stock Sense, while it is a bit bloated, it is by no means laggy. If somebody isn't comfortable with rooting, and doesn't have a pressing need to root, then I don't think they should root their phone. It adds risk, headaches, and concerns to make something, that is already fast, faster. If somebody should root their phone, it should be for more of a reason than, "well, it seems like a good thing to do".
[edit] Although, you are right. If you want "best results and maximum customizations", then yeah, rooting is required. But it didn't sound like that the OP wants. It sounds like the OP wants to know how to customize it well without rooting. That's my interpretation, and why I disagreed with you suggesting the the OP root and flash roms.
Just my $0.02 worth.

yea, its not that I don't want to, because I really would love to, but the wife was pissed that I unlocked my Imagio, and blames that on the problems I have had, so a deal was made, I take my kids upgrade, transfer to mine, and get the new Thunderbolt provided I DONT unlock, root, jailbreak, or do anything that allows me to customize it beyond what the original design allows.
Yea, fine, sounds fair. So what I am looking for is just those things that I can download and install that are 'authorized', so to speak, from Verizon and HTC.
Maybe when she upgrades she will want to see what can be done (she is due in a few months) and thats when I will have to 'show' her!

TXT message limit

I've just realised that there is a 3 message limit before it changes to multimedia.
I wanted to know if there was a way to remove this limit.
NOTE: I know you can dl other messaging app but the stock is good enough for me.

You can go to pulsars rom which has this fix for the stock app. Haven't seen it come up as a seperate thing. You don't tend to see too much work on things like the texting. I always asumed it was because there was little interest in working on something that is already available in several feature rich and well hashed out apps. I was kinda hoping for some tweaks for touch wiz but wonder if there will ever be much happening there for the same reason.
Yeah as krabman said, flash VillainRom 1.1 and install VillainTweaks works like a charm =)
Handcent SMS do the job, too... On stock rom ;-)

Well, nobody ever mentions things like this needing done.
Luckily someone told me about the 10 recipient, 3 SMS limit, so both these are removed if you flash VillainROM 1.1, and then use VRTweaks to take the MMS app fix
Ahem, I did sorta mention in your rom thread that if you were interested in adding a few basic tweaks to TW such as rows and columns it would find an audience with at least one poster. Assuming it wasn't too much work of course. lol
Good, well I have the same problem! 've walked a few things to try! and the exprimentei Handcend, but I do not detect all the contacts! someone already got the solution!?

Most ROMs should now carry this mod. Install CheckROM v6 and download it from the Kitchen app.

Eclipse Rom questions

I would post this under the eclipse section but in development but i dont have rights yet.
Is it okay to install a different launcher, email, calendar etc apps on ROMS like this. I hate to do that and destroy the whole idea behind the ROM but i love some of the preloaded apps that you cant get from the market.
Also has anyone noticed anything strange with how accurate the battery meter is? I was at 85% and when i rebooted the phone it said i was at %99 when it came back up.

There's a lot more to a ROM than the surface. Feel free to install whatever you want. Most ROMS though they have themed elements are modifying a lot of what you don't see. Removing unwanted involvement from Motorola, for example. Changing memory settings, wifi refresh rates, all sorts of things.
The battery meter issues are with 2.3.4 base, and no one has gotten a handle on how to fix it quite yet. It doesn't seem to affect battery life and within a little while, the percentage will get closer to accurate.
Thanks
Thank you.
I also noticed that the camcorder is missing. Oh well. This ROM is still pretty awesome. Thanks again.

Yes it is ok, I run launcher pro and have a different calender. As for the battery issue did you recalibrate the battery after flashing the new rom onto the phone?
---------- Post added at 10:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:49 AM ----------
You can switch to the camcorder once you start the camera app, also you could side load the blur camera if it bugs you that much.
No i didnt do the battery calabration. i think i might start over and give that a try. I actually really like the camera and the gallery i just happen to notice that there wasnt a camcorder icon in the menu. Trust me thats not a big deal.
As said earlier, the camcorder is in the camera app.
As for installing other apps, if you mean installing apps from the market, that is ok and they will work correctly. However, if you mean installing the original preloaded blur apps, most of those will have some functionality missing with Eclipse, if they even work at all. Posting exactly what apps you want to install will get a clearer answer.

If u want a direct button to camcorder GO TO MARKET.
Download app named CAMCORDER SHORTCUT.
Presto. Camcorder direct app button.
Anything else u need?
I used the battery fixer zip that's been floating around. I'm also using eclipse and since flashing the fix, Ive reboot my phone 4 or 5 times, all at different intervals of my battery's charge and its been minus 1% after every reboot. Way better than before. I'd have to say it works. Here the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350336&page=6

I use different launcher and music applications on my and have no issues at all. i dont see why you would have any issues, give it a shot whats the worst that can happen you reflash it.
My advice is to make a Nandroid backup before you make any changes you may later regret. Then, if you find that after installing an application your phone starts to have weird anomalies, you can simply restore from your backup when you know it was working well.
I also hate that I cant post in the dev threads yet. Not everyone that creates an account here is a n00b. lol. Oh well. I gotta get my 10 posts in.
The eclipse rom is just like the stock rom in the sense that you can install anything from the market and use it as normal, such as launchers, email apps, messaging apps, etc. They will work fine.
As far as the battery problem, that was something introduced with 2.3.4. Blame that on Motorola. There is a battery fix that was mentioned above that works well. I have been using it for about a week and have seen no problems with my battery jumping after reboots.

[Q] X2 freezing of apps/text problem

Ok guys I finally got around to rooting and freezing some apps last night on my X2. However, now I'm having texting problems. They seem to go out fine but they rarely come in. Also, I sometimes get a FC error saying the application Text Messaging ( process com.motorola.conversations has stopped unexpectedly.
Also, when texts do come in about 75% of the time I get two of the same text. This may be a chompsms thing since it was doing this before I rooted.
The list I used can found by googling "X2 freeze app list" and it's on androidcentral. (i can't post links, sorry)
Can you guys help sort this out? Thanks!
I've looked at the list and its sound. None of those apps should have caused the issue you are experiencing. You mentioned a 3rd party messaging app? Do you still have the stock messaging app?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Yes I sure do. I haven't removed anything, I've only frozen apps. I went halfway through the list and just froze a few at a time but stillgot the random FC's. I'm not sure what to do now..
I would unfreeze everything and see if you still get fcs. If you do it might be your third party app. If not then freeze just Verizon apps and freeze the rest one at a time, that way you can discover the problem by process of elimination. I personally think the third party app is causing the problem but hey I could be wrong.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
If I don't freeze anything then I don't get any fc's or problems to speak of. But that kind of defeats the purpose of buying Titanium Pro and the phone is much quicker when I had a bunch of the bloat frozen. I'll spend some more time freezing apps slowly but the problem is that the fc's don't happen happen every time even with the same list of frozen apps so that makes narrowing it down very difficult. If you have any great ideas in the meantime let me know, thanks!
Sure thing I will keep it in mind

My frozen list without FCs in any stock apps:
Amazon MP3
Amazon Kindle
All other preloaded apps (NFS Shift, Let's Golf, etc.)
android-syncservice-app (related to Backup Assistant)
BackupAssistanceClient.apk
blur_flickr.apk
blur_lastfm.apk
blur_linkedin.apk
blur_myspace.apk
blur_orkut.apk
blur_photobucket.apk
blur_skyrock.apk
blur_twitter.apk
BookmarksWidget.apk
BooksPhone.apk (Google Books)
BuaContactAdapter.apk (Backup Assistant Contact page)
Cardock2.apk (do not freeze if you use a car dock)
DeviceStatistics.apk (polls various systems and stores statistical data)
Dock.apk*
DockService.apk*
* These apps are also required for HDMI mirroring; keep ro.hdmi.mirror.enable=false in the build.prop as it is enabled via hotplugging
HelpCenter.apk
IMPresence.apk
MessagesWidget.apk
MyVerizon.apk
PerformanceManager.apk (this will cause persistent FCs until battery pull; on restart, the system will remove data related to this app)
Preloaded.apk (preloaded contacts)
Protips.apk
QuickContactWidget.apk
Quickoffice.apk
QuickSMS.apk
RichLocation.apk
Skype_mobile_live.apk (use Market version instead)
Slackerradio.apk
SpellingCheckService.apk (I'm a good speller and hate this crap)
SuggestionsProvider.apk
SuggestionsRuleCheckerCore.apk
SuggestionsServiceScheduler.apk
-- Freezing these will alleviate a lot of the lag experienced with the stock ROM; adding build.prop optimizations will complement this
ToggleWidgets.apk
Vcast.apk
VcastMusic.apk
VcastVideo.apk
vnav_DROIDX2... (VZ Navigator)
Vsuiteapp.apk
VVM.apk
VZWIM.apk
VZWInstaller.apk
WeatherWidget.apk
You can freeze the datacollection APKs, but just know that you won't have any battery statistics and some data push features won't work either. If you freeze datacollection without freezing the 3 Suggestions APKs, you'll get a force close on the RuleChecker at startup.
I kept the social stuff mainly because the stock ROM doesn't integrate the Facebook app like stock Android, so in order to have your Facebook contacts sync'd with your phone contacts, you need the blur_facebook.apk authenticator, and to keep the status updates intact when receiving a phone call from a contact with Facebook data, you need some of the social apps (mainly friendfeed.apk). I disable the social messaging notifications from the Messaging app in the launcher, as the official Facebook app provides notifications, and I don't need two.
If you don't care about that stuff, just remember that the stock ROM expects many of the authenticators to be there, mainly Facebook since stock Android also links with Facebook. You may get force closes when trying to open or edit a contact, or when text messaging contacts.
Here are the APKs that will cause FCs in the contacts area (opening or editing a contact):
blur_activesync.apk
blur_email.apk
blur_facebook.apk
blur_yahoo.apk
I kept blur_picasa and blur_youtube as I wanted these sync'd in my gallery.
blur_xxx are authenticators (used in the Accounts page)
Blurxxx are actual programs
Sorry about the length, but some things need to be explained so everyone can understand these things.
Thanks for the very long and detailed post Jason. I'm also trying to get my extended battery calibrated but the Battery Calibrator app doesn't seem to be working.
I will definitely get to work on that app list but with just those few that I had listed I wasn't able to get into my contacts without a fc. I don't see how everyone else is doing all these things so easily but I'm struggling. Is it possible to have a bad root or something?
I didn't read all of Jason's post, so forgive me if I repeat something, but I use Chomp and have run into something like this, but only if I freeze the default messaging application. If I freeze it, I can send text from Chomp, but not receive them. Unfrozen, I can send and receive fine. As much as I'd enjoy freezing the default app, I've just disabled the notifications from it and hidden it from view. I know I was able to freeze it without issue when I first got the phone (back on FroYo), but, since updating to GB, it causes issues.
I've seen problems when my mother sends me a text where it doubles the text, we are both in VZW and the text itself is doubled on her end, so could it be VZW?

did u happen to freeze email engine or authentication?
That will mess up texts
I can't remember now for sure but I think I froze Corporate Sync Authenticator. Would that affect texts? I need to get some more time to play around with this but it's so darn frustrating, I thought this would be pretty straight forward. I also still can't get my extended battery calibrated. I get the blinking red-light after about four hours off the charger

Our phone will NEVER read an extended battery correctly
no matter how many times u "calibrate" it.
You gonna want to use a battery widget and keep an eye on the voltage left.
I believe around 3700 is pretty much dead and u should recharge.
Corporate email may have had something to do with that text issue.
It sounds more likely that it is the third.party message app giving u issues.
I know when I used go sms and I froze stock message app I entered the APN and SMSC #'s or something like that manually ((I forget exactly what I entered...but I had found what needed to be entered by digging around in root explorer somewhere)) for it to pull messages and send correctly....
good luck...
If I have time later ill browse around and see if I can locate what I did before...

Yeah I have had mine go lower than 3700
I meant that when it starts to go under 3700 it seems to drop faster also
so its a good idea to charge up when u get under 3700 since its a BAD idea to let a Li-on battery drain completely....they work better and last longer if u start charging when it gets to around 15%...
Thanks for clarification motcher
Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately I just can't seem to freeze anything without getting force closes. So I guess my root was all for not :/ boo.
Is there a specific battery widget that you would recommend? Or will any do?
When i first got my X2 I had a problem with sending double texts and not being able to open a thread once it had 100+ mesages in it. I would have to delete the thread for it to be corrected. I rooted the phone and tried freezing and unfreezing a bunch of apps and it still gave me problems. Both when i was stock with very few apps and rooted. But when i flashed minimal x it seemed to quit. Ive been running Eclipse and now CM7 and havent had anymore issues. Btw the problem with the text wasnt just one phone. This is my second X2 and both had it till I put a rom on it. Im sure there was something simple I missed but I still dont know what.

[Q] Speed up Stock Messaging App?

Kinda what the title is referring to. My phone (Xperia Play) came with pure Vanilla Gingerbread, which is really nice! I've used SO many messaging apps like GO, Chomp, Handcent, Pansi, etc. and I just decide to go back to the stock app every time I switch apps after a day or two. The reason why I switch is because of one thing, the threads take too long to load on the stock app. It's annoying, because if I want to start texting my gf, I have to wait literally 10 seconds just to open up a 1000 count thread. I don't like to delete my messages.
There's a port of the ICS messenger on the market but it has adverts in it for some reason, and what's funny is that it loads a thread that big pretty much instantly, and I mean the ENTIRE thing.
Looks like its time to start deleting messages in your inbox/outbox. Never really understood why ppl like to save text messages. Its like chatting in person and you both writing what each other says then filing it away. For what?

I've had it, the adverts go away, but the white bar is still there. Which is really annoying, I'm using that ICS messaging app right now. If there's a way to either remove that bar, or at least shrink it, that would be fantastic! There shouldn't be an advert because it's a port of Google's software. The newest version has "Removed AD from Landscape mode" in the change log. If that could help.
