[Q] How to Change/Modify Vibrant Icons - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my boyfriend was able to use PS CS5 today to modify his iphone4 icons. This got me to wondering if I could do the same thing, and if so, how would I go about doing such. For him, it was as simple as finding the folder in which the icons were stored, modding them, and placing the modded icons back in the system folder. So yeah. Any help would be mucho appreciated.

you could use ninjamorph from the market, its free (you can do a quick search here at XDA on how to use it)
or for me the easier way, use 7zip.
- Open the .apk you want to edit.
- Go to res>>drawable hdpi and find the icon of the apk.
- Now rename the icon you want to change it into (for example the browser is named ic_launcher_browser.png)
- Drag the new icon and overwrite the existing png. close it
- Push that apk to system>app using root explorer and you're all set.
common ones i usually change so you dont have to look for the name
ic_launcher_contacts.png - contacts.apk
ic_launcher_phone.png - dialertabactivity.apk
ic_launcher_smsmms.png - MMS.apk
ic_launcher_browser.png - browser.apk

Lockscreen ??

Can somebody tell me where the lockscreen is stored?
Probably either framework-res.apk or SystemUI.apk. Open them up with winrar and see if you can find any PNG's that exist in the already set up lockscreen.
In the framework apk i just found a huge amount of .xml files and in the systemUI i found the statusbar png but nothing from the lockscreen :/
They're in the Framework-res file. Look better.
Thanks found em and i've found the standard android lockscreen png's too in the same direction. And is it possible to use the standard ones if i just rename them to name of sonys lockscreen png's?
Sorry for my bad english
Yea. Android is made to use a specifix name for a certain icon in a certain spot. You can put whatever you want, but you want to make it look nice So adding a bird with the same name as a button will show you a bird instead of the button, but will behave as a button
Okay and if i did changes to the framework-res.apk must i do something with it or can i just put it on my phone with root explorer?

GUIDE Modify apks

Hi. I just wanted to write a guide on modifying apks. You probably have seen my rom in the ported section.
(I'll make the guide look better when I get home)
Well lets get started.
1.
First. An introduction to what an apk is. An apk is (believe it or not) a zip of files.
2.
So how do you go about editing a zip? I suggest using 7z on your computer or root explorer on your phone.
Second: there are a lot of apks you can edit but for this guide I'll be using the systemui.apk that you find in any rom in the system/app folder.
3.
Ok. So assuming you start with the system ui apk your going to need to extract the apk with 7z on your computer. (or root explorer on your phone. Es file should work also)
4.
Now you should have a new folder where you chose to extract your apk. Open that folder. Your going to see a bunch of files. What your probably going to be interested in is the res folder. Go into that folder and find the drawable hdpi folder. Open it.
Your going to see a lot of icons. Here is where you can change things like wifi icons. You can add 4g icons and so much more. Even edit what your contacts look like.
5.
This is an important step. Make sure your using the system ui apk from the rom your currently on or make sure its compatible with yoir rom.
Ok so now we get to the things like icon changes. Download a theme you've been dying for but couldn't get because it was either for another rom or phone. And the only thing you wanted was a few things from the theme.
Now extract that zip. Then extract the systemui.apk again from the zip you want your icons to look like. MAKE SURE YOU RENAME THE THE SYSTEM UI TO SOMETHING DIFFERENT SO YOU DON'T MIX THEM UP.
6.
So now that you got the system ui apk with whatever you want to use all you need to do is go into the drawable hdpi of the one with the icons you want in it. Copy them and bring them to your roms stock system ui and replace them.
7.
Thats about it. Now zip your roms stock system ui back up and change the ending to .apk. Then put it in system/apps and replace it. Reboot. And boom. Your modded apk is ready.
Hit thanks if I helped.
for step three rename the. apk to .zip its easier
This can only be used for replacing regular images in the APK. There are many images that are .9 images which require decompiling.
There are MANY guides across xda that go into detail and show you the proper way to modify APK's..... There is much more then images.
This one is even in this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388459

Custom Icons

I have started playing with custom icons recently an was curious, where can one find the stock icon.png file? I have a lot of apps on my phone like DrexelOne (for my college) which no one has made customs of, because of this I need the stock image to use as a base for my custom one. Other unpacking the .apk and removing the the icon.png is there a way to reach these?
Thanks ahead of time, I think this will help many more rookies than just me!

Are you asking where that default icon is that only shows up when the app has no specified icon? That would be either in framework.res or com.htc.resources. Both of those apks are in /system/framework.
No I'm asking in general is there a way to take an application's icon and use it as the base for a custom one? For example: Can I somehow get the SuperUser icon .pgn file so that I can take it into paint and edit it, then use ApexLauncher to edit the icon shown on my home screen?
Maybe I'm simplifying the steps to much, but can't you make 72x72pixel .pgn and use ApexLauncher to to make that new icon the icon the shows up?

[REQ] TouchWiz30Launcher

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and if its possible I'm gonna ask for help here.
I'm losing hope with this, I followed all the guides regarding in modifying touchwiz however whenever I edit an xml file even just a letter and recompile it again, it won't work. I set the permissions to rwx-rxx-rxx in the /system/app but still its not listed as an installed application in all application lists. TB shows it as an uninstalled app/orphan. I already managed to deodexed my touchwiz so I don't know the problem anymore. What I'm trying mod with my touchwiz is as follows:
*5 icons dock (original icons) /no dock background or some line above dock just like original
*5 rows homescreen
*application_name=Samsung home to Home
*transparent menu_background
*fly in effect
*launcher:defaultScreenCount = 1
*automatically sorting apps to alphabetical
*disable homescreen app labels
I downloaded an already modded touchwiz3 to set as my model for editing, its perfect however what I don't like in it is the line above the dockbar and whenever I set the homescreen number to only 1, the homescreen icons/widgets are scrolling. I uploaded the 3 files (original/downloaded/my modded), could someone check what I'm missing in my work? BTW, I'm on a stock S5300DXLF2.
I'll appreciate all the help in advance, thanks.

edit.how did u named the apk?
MANYGREEEEEEEETZ!!!
Yes, I set the permissions to rw-r--r-- but still its not showing up as an installed application. I deodexed the original touchwiz using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600805 but still it won't let me edit a single line in an xml file. What could be the problem?
Regarding your question about how did I named the apk, are you talking about the filename.apk (TouchWiz30Launcher.apk)? I didn't change that in the /system/app directory.
try to sign the apk
I finally managed to make it work, I copied all the files I edited from the new compiled apk to the original apk and I pushed back the original apk. However the application name and the menu background transparency didn't change at all. Since I don't know where the values folder goes after recompiling an apk, I don't know where to copy it from the new apk to paste to the original apk.

This is the problem of signing the app... use vts to compile, decompile and signing... I guess it will work...
Sent from......... I guess you know it...
I tried using VTS, but that didn't help either changing the application name. I'm having another problem adding rows to homescreen, I changed the longaxiscells to 5 but I'm getting FC.
how is it .. is it good ?
Any of this is like the one in JellyBlastV3 rom??? With the transperant dock and stuff??? And I just push it using root explorer??? And set permissions??

Missing System Apps after replacing icons (using APK Editor)

i want to change the stocks system apps icon, 3 out of 16 apps that the icon has changed were missing (but the rest are working perfectly), the missing one were
-Contacts.apk
-DownloadProviderUi.apk
-Settings.apk
the method that im using was
-using APK Editor,
-open res
-and replace the ic_launcher_(app name).png in mipmap-hdpi/mdpi/xhdpi with each resolution of my own icon.
-then put them in system/app or system/priv-app and change the permission to rw-r-r
oddly enough that those 3 apps were the only one that didnt work
help me . and what causes the problem?
New to Android world, hope i can find some guidance
Thank You very much1
