[Q] 3D Screen Question - HTC EVO 3D

Is the screen 3D constantly? Or do you have the option of turning it on and off.
When viewing 3D on the screen, is it 3D in both landscape and portrait?
When it is in 3D, is everything 3D? ie. all aspects of the user interface, menus, etc.
Thanks.

Lol i dont own the phone but know the answer anyways.
The 3d switch...switches between 3d and 2d...and only works in landscape mode.
Htc sense only got one 3d effect in weather i think...other stuff only 3d videos and photos and games.

Thanks. I originally thought the 3D switch is for the camera only.

The 3d switch is for camera only...
It doesn't turn off the 3d if your playing a game or watching a movie...
It's I think hardware limited to only landscape.. don't quote me on it.

Correct. Sorry for not being clear.
And yes hardware is limited to landscape 3d only.

That was covered in depth in another thread (some said yes, some said no) but it actually does do 3D in portrait.... just not nearly as well.
Mike

3D works only while viewing pictures, watching videos and playing games. No 3D in menus, homescreen, etc. The switch flips the camera from 2D to 3D in order to take 3D pictures and videos. It works best in landscape.

This was also debated in threads even before we had a release date... My first 3d every time I would use the 3d camera and press the home button rather than the back button my launcher and icons looked holographic
Could be a possible to utilize the 3d effect in portrait mode... But wouldn't be very usefull to the people that get "sick". Or a headache from long exposure to the 3d effect

Is there a 3D launcher available? I really like LG Optimus 3D's interface (from what I hear).

It would be awesome though if it could be ripped from the optimus and copied onto the 3vo.

Wow i just read the knowmymobile review of the evo3d...
They say when you make 3d photos it doesnt even make it quality 3d...
So i ask you owners...does it has good 3d effects? Effects of both depth, and a "jump out of the screen"? When making close photos and when making distance photos?

I will stand behind it... I was a person that assumed it was a "gimmick". But I've see some pretty amazing. Videos and pics both with depth and the POP out effect... Id say try to get your hands on one and watch a few YouTube 3d videos.... It's beyond a gimmick now

Will the Evo 3D work in portrait and landscape?

The way I understand how those screens work, I don't see how it would be possible for the screen to have a 3D effect in portrait AND landscape. And if it doesn't, that could be a deal breaker. Like you'd want the interface 3D effects, but you'd also want to be able to watch 3D videos in landscape.
Anyone know? I can't find any info on it or any video or anything.
While I don't think anyone can provide official answers at this point in time, I would assume they would not make it so that you had to watch YouTube 3D in portrait mode, as everyone knows how ridiculous that is.
Also, see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSuD45mRl_o&feature=channel_video_title
It shows a video by HTC of the HTC EVO 3D, and it shows a movie being played in landscape, while the whole premise of the video is to showcase 3D abilities of the device, saying, specifically, before the portion of a movie clip in landscape, "3D movies in a stunning qHD display."
Thank god a new thread was started for this extremely specific question. I doubt it could have been asked in the 47 other EVO 3D threads.

Maybe anything that has the 3D effect will be forced to landscape (hypothesis)
If it's like any of the other glass-less 3D screens (LG Optimus 2X, Nintendo 3DS, 3D photo frames, etc...) it'll only work in 1 orientation. In order to work in 2 orientations, it'll need 2 parallax layers (instead of 1), or some other technology, and I don't think it's cost effective yet to do so.
If it will work horizontally what is stopping them from making it work vertically?

What I was wondering about is. Well, ok, the phone takes 3D still pictures and video. I take it that you can view these 3D stills on your phone and maybe a 3D TV?? What about the video? Again viewable on a 3DTV?? What about on your pc monitor? I guess printing hard copies is out huh? So, its kinda like a novelty and maybe gamer thing??? The only thing I would probably like is if the GUI itself is 3D. Thats what I'm looking at the most anyway.

As far as I understand it, these screens work like printed holograms. Your left and right eye are actually seeing different sets of pixels. So the screen is divided into two vertically-interlaced screens (which explains the poor viewing angle). If you turned such a screen on its side, the pixel rows would no longer be vertically interlaced but horizontally interlaced and your eyes would not be seeing the different screens and you would have no 3D effect.
From videos of the device it seems clear that it DOES work in both portrait and landscape, so I'm pretty interested in learning how they're pulling it off.

Minor annoyance: cant zoom 3d photos

I'm sure there is a technical reason, but I wish I could zoom into the photos i take in 3d. Admittedly they are really cool though
You can zoom.. I have only taken two pics and I just zoomed.

Is there a way to enable 3D on your homescreen? i have tried and called ATS and no solution, although corporate employees say yes (which you cannot trust them ever, i am an indirect tech) and it is also in the commercials. Anybody got leads or know hows?

The 3d actually does work in portrait mode. It may not look as sharp, but all of the 3d pics can be seen in both landscape and portrait mode. I bet it'll only be a short time before you see some 3d apps running in portrait.

Chainfire 3d + evo3d = full 3d?

I'd like to say, in theory, with a game that is rendered in three dimensions, you could program it to just use two different camera angles... but um, it'd have to be programmed into each one i'd guess... so yeah, no, prolly never gonna work.

Correct. Now the trolls can go away
In theory the display driver could be coded to display any opengl app in 3d, without changing apps. The driver has the complete 3d model, and two perspectives could be rendered. This would produce an accurate 3d projection for any ogl/el game.
The only thing that would appear odd is if the dev wasn't careful with the z plane on some objects ( 2d overlays, etc). It would appear fine in 2d, but 3d they may be way close or far out.
The 3d games aren't even POP OUT 3D so I don't know what the other guys are talking about. If you even play the included 3d game you can easily tell it just adds depth....I see why there would be a difference in other games, there will just be aded depth.
I thought NVIDIA's 3d stuff was a similar hack which is why they had varying degrees of compatibility among various games

I doubt spiderman was completely rewritten in 3d format. I would imagine it was just converted. I know instant 2d to 3d on a capable television doesnt look bad at all. Even some 2d to 3d clips are pretty good if done right, so I dont see what all the negative fuss is about. I was disappointed before launch, when I realized this phone didnt do 2d to 3d.
Oh yeah, games like call of duty that switches to 3d, doesnt have a completely seperate game on the disc, and it looks good.
3D isn't 3D as it was 5 years ago.
even in the movie theaters 3D isn't like OMG **** IS COMING AT ME kind of deal.
it adds "depth" and somewhat "clarity"
i remember Terminator 3D , now that was 3D .
the EVO 3D has limitations , makes stuff minor 3D. requires a lot of resources for full 3D . nothing a phone can handle atm, not even computers can handle it. full popping out , i think that hand is gonna grab my face 3D .
would you sacrifice half your battery life permanently with no fixes for full 3D on all the time? how would your eyes feel? looking at it everyday all day? i'll super glue 3D glasses onto your head . everything will be 3D .
the 3D effect is simply an angle, and depth as people say. that is all. makes you see more than just a flat angle. you can see the sides of the flatness, making it 3D

THE REAL 3D Phone : Never Written Before 3D Comparison EVO3d Vs O3D

I am basically writing this article to help all those who have spent time and time to buy the best 3d phone and are probably reading STEREOTYPE reviews repeating same things again and again and leaving you in a more complex state that you were before reading them.
I own an HTC Evo 3d and I also own a Optimus 3d and i also own an Acer 4738DG 3d laptop. I spent hours trying to find which of the two phones is best but i ended up buying both. Now this review to help those wanting to buy and trying to choose.
I will NOT go into details available at every other review website. I will only point out features that really matter and are not available anywhere for review.
PHONE SIZE AND FEEL
O3D is definitely not easy to hold. Its light but difficult to operate. The standby button and unlock button is at the top which makes it difficult to use, since this is the button you are likely to use a lot. The phone is lighter than EVO 3d which is an advantage.
Evo 3D is very bulky. and HEAVY. However due to shorter width than O3D it is easier to hold and grip and the unlock plus startup button is more accessible than O3D. My personal choise is Evo 3D for this round. Simply because it is easier to grip, although it is heavy.
3D Capabilities
Evo 3d is NOT a 3d phone. Surprised? Well thats the truth unfortunately. Evo 3d is a 3D camera which lets you take pictures and view them in 3d. NOT a 3d phone. I dont see any intention of HTC to make it a 3d phone as such. The only thing they have developed is a 3d camera ad a viewing screen. There is no 3d conversion as in you would have to manually covert2d pics and videos on your PC before you can view them on EVo which is useless.
O3d is a 3D phone. its a 3d camera, plus 3d interface icluding 3d channel youtube, plus 3d gallery, plus 3d menus, plus 3d application plus 3d games. Hell, it can even convert ON THE GO 2D movies and snapshots in 3D without any external software.
Go for O3d if you want a full 3d phone.
3D Camera Quality
Evo 3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 2MP. Video is at 720p. The camera is pretty basic with regular Htc options and only one option of 3d width adjustment. The camera in 3d mode has flash. Horizontal viewing is best. Vertical although supported is hardly noticeable in 3D. 3d Depth is not as cool as O3d but the pictures come up nice and bright.
O3D captures stil photographs in 3d format at max 3MP. and video at 720p. There is no flash for 3D stills or movie which is a HUUUGEEE drawback. The 3d camera is very smart and allows many 3d options like side by side, vertical cuts and other depth adjustments. The depth of 3d pics is better than Evo3d. but the picture quality itself is not that great.
If you operate in a bright environment go for O3d. If not go for HTC cuz flash is a huge advantage. The low resolution of HTC is compensated by the fact that it has flash.
Pre Bundled 3D software
HTC Evo3D = None
O3D = 4 games in 3d, Separate 3d gallery, 3d stuff accessible from LG 3d store which has movie clips and other apps plus games.
UPDATES
O3D is promised by LG to be updated to Gingerbread in October alongwith more 3d applications and 3d interface. LG has a 3d STORE from where you can download 3d videos and clips, free plus paid. Means you dont have to dowload, crop, resize and then somehow make them work on HTC evo3d.
HTC Evo3D from what i have learnt is not getting 3d updates from HTC. It is left to the developers for that.
ROOTING
Both can be rooted.
Volume Rocker
Volume rocker key in both devices is a pain to use. Its so much embedded kind of inside the phone.
Battery
O3D battery lasts for atleast 4 hours more than Evo 3d.
The other stuff is pretty basic. So if anyone is looking for a 3d phone this review may help him.
I have been an HTC fan throughout. But honestly LG has come a long way. I have the LG app files so if anyone interested in porting them to HTC evo 3d that would really be great.
If this helps, just say thanks.

So... Did the LG win the "Updates" part based on promises on adding an update that's been out for months? Frankly it should have shipped with GB. Kindof ridiculous that it didn't...
Also, converting videos and pics on the go doesn't seem all that convenient if the camera can just take 3D videos and pics. Why take a 2D anything and convert? The conversion won't be even half as good as the real deal.
EVO 3D does videos and YouTube in 3D.

My Evo 3D came with The Green Hornet 3D and Spiderman 3D. It also came with that 3D Games, but I wouldn't really call that one software though.
First of all thanks for the replies.
This guide is not basically to support one phone over the other. Point being whats good in 3D.
Lemme answer few of the posts so far,
Auto 2d to 3D conversion. Well this feature is kinda handy. With a 3D phone in your hand, you have the new camera to take 3d pics but what about your old collection. Do you want to boast off the 3d and enjoy the same pic with 3d content? Well then LG is your choice cuz (because) the phone can do that.
The result is not that bad actually. I remember when i first laid hands on my Acer 5738dg 3d laptop i converted a lot of 2d content. Never liked it. But this new screen concept of without the glasses does a pretty decent job.
I can say this cuz i HAVE TESTED it on O3D. I would suggest someone else to test and say if its that bad or ok.
The games that come with HTC EVO 3d are standalone games available in sprint version. I am talking about sim free versions of both phones. PLUS O3D has a 3d interface from which you can actually use and launch the game.
Lastly, LG promised an update in august and they delivered. I think the gingerbread update is coming in October, but what I am more interested in is the promised development that LG stated that this update will enable 2D games to be viewed in 3D as well. That is what i meant with when i said its a true 3d phone.
I will probably keep both phones till either HTC gets a port of LG 3d interface or LG gets an update for camera 3d flash. After that I will sell one of these.
Meanwhile, if anyone wants a hands on comparison of any feature please post here and i shall help to the best of my knowledge.
BTW someone mentioned youtube? Well when i meant youtube built in O3D i mean a real 3D youtube app. Maybe i need to post a video to let you guys have a look. Youtube in 3d is accessible by adding ",yt3d" to any search. But thats not what i meant.

Cyberlink powerd dvd 3d conversion, dvd FAB, stereoscopic viewer and tridef.
These are all 3d converters and players and pretty decent ones and trust me they are making a lot of money for these features cuz large public wants it.
Anyways, the 3d conversion on O3D is not bad actually, its good. Not excellent and not at all like actual. but good.
