WiFi - this is killing me - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really need some help with my wifi issues on my tab. I am tethering from my Thunderbolt and as you can see in the picture, my signal strength is as good as it can get. However, the websites are not loading at the time of the picture, the weather will not refresh and my words with friends won't update. All of this is sporadic. After I took the screenshot I went right back and hit refresh on the browser and it worked.
Here's a good example; just a few minutes ago I downloaded Swiftkey from the Amazon appstore and no sooner had it downloaded and installed when I went to the browser and when it was trying to load the homepage of Google it tells me there's no connection when I have full signal strength. Also, what do the colors of the wifi signal bars mean? Sometimes they're gray and other times blue. But I can't see a direct connection between working data and error messages. Sometimes gray works and sometimes it doesn't, same way with the blue bars.
Basically, I am connected to wifi and the data connection comes and goes in a matter of seconds. Last night it worked for an hour or two no problem. It's not my tethering because I updated the app, reverted back to what I had before and even tried another release. My Acer A500, my girlfriend's iphone and ipad, and my ps3 all connect to the network and have no problems. I know it's my tab, I just don't know how to fix it.
I even tried replacing the wpasuplicant, it makes no difference with or without the new one so I just chnaged it back. Plus, the tab has no problem seeing and recognizing the phone's network; it just connects and stops working. It doesn't even tell me I'm disconnected, it shows me being connected even when it doesn't work.
I'm stumped guys, this shouldn't be so difficult. I really like the tab, and I don't want to have to get rid of it. I find it strange that no one else (that I've seen anyways, forgive me if I've missed it) is having this problem. I have seen wifi issues listed on here about not being able to connect, but not dropping out like mine.
Sorry for writing a book, any help is appreciated.

When you're tethering from your phone to your tab, since they are close, the signal between them is strong. This doesn't mean that the 3g speeds that you're getting from the provider to your phone is fast. You're phone might be dropping it's 3g signal. You'll never know it by looking at your tab because as far as it knows, it has a full connection to your phone's wifi.

That's true, I'll keep an eye on it. Right now I have full bars on the phone and it's working fine. But earlier I can't say because I wasn't looking for that.
**EDIT** Nope, that's not it either. It was working for a while and I thought it might be. But now I have full bars of 3G coverage and it says on the tab browser "Data connectivity problem" and "The connection to the server timed out."
I should also mention that I've been tethering from the TB for months and never had an issue with a device getting wifi from it. So that's why I'm so quick to dismiss the phone as the problem.

Do you see the same behavior when connecting to other wifi networks? If so that would eliminate your phone as the issue, and point to either a software or hardware issue on the tab. If you can't... probably the phone.

Boo ****ing hoo JoKu
Try a cable instead of the ***** wi-fi geek connection!

In 20-30 years time we'll all be cancer ridden because of the wi-fi radioation. Too bad, suckers...

HTC does not allow wi-fi tethering from their phones unless it is through your carrier. You have to use Foxfi app and use the bluetooth tether option.

HELP/Alert! New ALLTEL versions wont do wifi!?!?

This really really pi##es me off, as where I live I get 1x data, & usually use my home wireless (wifi).
Recieved the pro, and activated it. It seems disabled by being activated by alltel. I even stumped the blackberry adept person at the local store enough that they switched out the phone, I walked to next door (motel) used the free wireless (to prove the wireless would even function) then let him activate it and headed home (30+ miles into the wilderness). got home and again I cant get Crap wifi to work.
Home is wireless b, it connects, can be seen on the 'simple' 2 wire wireless appliance but the PRO, will not see or try to send data through it. turned off security and everything on the wireless for testing. I can check, but I know the pass for the motel, and I could try again, but am definitely sure that this AINT the issue--> again the phone wouldnt connect at the motel (least not the pre exchanged one) with me or the rep at Altel either, while it was activated and on alltel.
who to call? Any help out there?
my 6800 will still wifi, at anyplace there is a signal and that I know the passcodes or is open.
yes I asked this, at alltel-howard forums, but would think you guys here know more (on second thought, when I remembered about all the stuff you do here, I know I probably should've posted here 1st, but Im kinda mad at the moment!)
Pretty adept at computers, I do IS as my real job, anything I can do to help trouble shoot? yeah the 6800 has been flashed & I even noobed around with cooking a few time. appreciate any help you guys
i Have a touch pro and a touch diamond, both under 2 weeks old and the wifi works fine with both of them, maybe you should try a custom rom and see if they changes anything. but there is no reason it shouldnt work with the stock rom

goony,
Is it an Alltel? are you positive that wifi is working, not the "data" connection with alltel towers (cell call)? My proof is that if I goto my basment, I have no cell service so not any data connction, ONLY WIFI (that is where my wireless router is. that is when I found out the 1st time. Everything else looks right, on the phone it says it is connected, on the router I can see it on the connected devices list.
I have my issue that I believe, that it is some setting that Alltel is setting... like I said the phone would connect via wifi until the phone activated. When I activated (full unlimited data package is on this phone) the phone fully rebooted on its own, 3 times as if getting updated via data plan. Im not talking about the 1st time turn on customizations, those were done before I tested the wifi at the motel lobby... For instance, the volume control buttons - the display app were obviously modified, I am not positive what else was.
I'd LOVE to try custom rom, if I wasnt right in the period of time I can get my money back, or not. after that I will...
yes they are alltel, and to test the wifi i just connected it to my router and then turned of my alltel data and it stayed connected so i am positive the wifi works. you can still use a custom rom under your return period, if you want to return just relock it.
I wanted to double check myself sting to make sure i was realy getting wifi, so i connected and went to speedtest.net and did a speed test and sure enough it showed my isp as roadrunner(my home provider). Have you had this problem with multiple phones? are you checking the internet option when it connects? and do you have it diconnected from the pc? my wifi wont work on my diamond hooked to a pc.
Has nothing to do with alltel. Maybe with the rom or the phone. Now I hope you're not waiting for a pop up to show itself on the main screen asking if you want to connect because you could wait forever. Go to comm manager enable wifi/ go to start->settings->connections->wifi and make sure options are set to "all available." If you can even see wireless networks on the list, the wifi is functioning correctly and there is a router settings conflict. If you don't see networks on that list in wifi, then there is a rom/hardware problem.

Hey thanks!
But, it is the Stock shipped rom, I have my HTC 6800 right next to this one, connected and surfing the web, both show up when in the home WIFI router config as connected, yet the pro sends NO DATA to ie or opera, (cant locate any webpages) or any app that uses internet/data.Unless there is something I need to do with PRO that I never had to do with the 6800 (mogul) that I just flashed back to stock shipped rom, ready to sell on ebay...
what I dont know is, well, most of the people wifi to tether a laptop or something, I dont! Sure that will be neat in the future, but RIGHT NOW, Just I use WIFI when I am at home and dont even have signal or evdo near me... (remote locations that I live, the tower coverage sucks out here in ks...) Got to fix this soon, or this Beyotch is going back to alltel.
Another thing, this bad boy pulled this crap, as soon as alltel activated the device (so I could use it as my phone!) when it was NOT activated, the wifi worked (proven at the motel next door to the Alltel store I exchanged this phone). BTW, I was able to test it on the 1st phone shipped to me, while it was activated, it pulled the same thing, when he unactivated the phone, we could almost pickup the wifi from the motel next door (distance was the only issue I think now looking back) but seemed like a chip problem.
Where I got screwed was we believed the wifi to be bad on the 1st phone. So he got out a new phone, and before we activated it, I went and tested the wifi, it worked on the 2nd phone. I thought wall was fine, it worked. then I had him activate it, assuming that proved I will be able to use the wifi. So I leave the store thinking OK wifi works. I get home, and again unable to use my home networking wifi to open web or apps. unacceptable. Yet the 6800 does and still works flawlessly (as long as you slide the wifi sider on side to on {inside joke}).
follw me better now?
What brand router do you have? How many devices are wireless? And it connects to other locations but are you sending and recieving data? Try this link http://www.wmwifirouter.com/trial/ and install on 6800 if you are not normally around hotspots. This will test the t-pro's ability to send and recieve information via wifi. Now it is sounding like an IP address conflict.

Sweeny, Im in the houshold router (made by 2wire) I can see it (the Pro as well as the 6800) each get an ip. (I work In IT, so I know what you are talking about in ip conflicts, all that.) I have even set the router to manually setup IPs now, then set the ip inside the Pro, as well as the default gateway, dns all that.) I'm telling ya, it is more like it doesnt know the DNS or the gateway (just like I disable internet surfing on the computers at work that I still must use networking)
I copied the DNS and everything from a working laptop (ipconfig -all) on a wireless laptop today, and still as if it was disabled.
This weekend i will test the dang thing tethering with my notebook i'll bring home from work (use the pro as the internet access). if it wont tether either, then I think allHell is doing something. Again if the device is DE-Activated I will wifi... {I'll bet you $$}. I might call alltel, tomarrow night, and try that. I'll have them inactivate it and if it suddenly works, then the question is, what do I do with alltel? they dont have the right to disable hotspot usage do they?
I feel I feel the presence of VERIZON already in Alltel, Luke is turning to the dark side. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
You all thought I was off my crock...
http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/2073117/Touch+Pro+WiFi?t=anon lots of folks posting same problems it looks like.
Need that group of people who can create a kitchen, and hcak tomtoms, to help us with this PLEASE!
No I don't, think you're off your crock I just know how frustrating problems like this can be. Here is what I suggest you do. And if this doesn't work exchange the phone or try a different router. I know what you're thinking....not the router. Truth is might be. Its just like wireless adapters in wii's and ps3's they simply will not work with a handfull of routers even though not clearly documented.
Anyway, change router to static Ip's, safer anyway.
Specifiy gateway, primary and secondary dns, and limit your ip's within 100 available obtainables. Use a 64 bit wep encryption. Change the channel of your router's broadcast to 1 or 11. Use only simple gateway ip range, not pure server. If you need me to provide you with example settings then pm me because I do not want to broadcast them via forum
Good luck.
Dont take this the wrong way....but are you positive that you are disabling the DATA Connection in Comm Manager?
I have had the alltel touch pro since the second they hit the store. I have used 3 of them since and they all work perfectly on wifi. I primarily use wifi and use diamond tweak to activate the wifi standby so wifi stays connected in standby like data does by default and use modaco nodata to disable data as I live in a house that gets a very lowsignal from the tower and eats my battery superfast if I use data. I have a router in the house and one in my office detached from my home and when I had my mogul it often would not switch between routers successfully requiring me to manually connect more often than not. All the Touch Pros connect superfast and switch automatically. I am running mightyrom 4.12 and telus radio which is light years better than stock with signal, speed and batterylife, but even when I was on stock for about 3 months there were absolutely no wifi issues.

Not sure which of us you are asking this queston of...
Thanks, for the help so far...
I was having the same issue (Alltel and all).
I found this post in the MS forums:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/561f18a8-5f64-4359-957e-adb003229f1d
Essentially, it says to "Navigate to START/SETTINGS/Connections Tab/Connections icon/Advanced Tab
Press Select Networks Button
At the top it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:"
You want to press on the drop down and choose My Work Network"
You need to tell the system that the Work Network connects to the internet as well. While this doesn't seem like the ideal solution (there should be a faster way to switch it, or it should do it automatically depending on location), it did work for me. I'm sure there's a much more sleek solution out there, though.
Btw... I hope I'm posting this correctly. I'm more a reader than a poster.
Ooop... one more thing. Its non-sleekatude rests with the fact that when you want to switch between wifi and your data plan, you have to go through the whole process, and switch the active network from My Work Network to Alltell Wireless. This is where I was hoping for a better solution. As I say, it does work, but it seems like it should involve less hassle.
Might add this to the WIKI, I dunno but there could be a few more thousand users out there on ATT or SWB using the modem/routers that they shipped when you got DSL more than a year ago...
Everyone that has the older 2 wire brand, wifi modem/router that came with SBC (now ATT). Wierd I know. But Mine has just been replaced by the newer version of that modem/router. and I will be dammed, it works. but the phone wont work with the older ones. Mine was the 2WIRE 1000hw model. they are shipping new models, and finally the phone will work with the wifi on that new router.
Thought it might be nice to know...
alltel model uses wifi just fine
My TP from alltel works just fine with wi-fi all i ever do is turn it on and then select which connection i want to make ...really quite nice...maybe you need to exchange yours...
On further testing of my own setup, I'm thinking my issue was the router. I had done several fixes all at once, and cited the wrong fix as the working one. I happened to reset my router at the same time I did the above suggested fix.
I thought it had to be the device, as my HTC Apache never had an issue with the router, but after resetting the router, and going back to the original settings on the TP, I'm having no problems connecting to the network. I wish I could pinpoint the exact conflict between the two, but now that I have it working, I'm not messing with it.
My suggestion is to back up your router settings, reset the router, and see what happens. Or test your wifi on someone else's network.
Isolating a network conflict can be one of the least fun things to do, but from everything I've seen here and in other forums (and my experience with it) I'm going to say that's the issue, and not the TP alone.
I don't think it likes your router being wireless B, you should try it on a wireless G router before Ebaying it.

Stock T-Mobile Amaze Wifi and/or E-Mail Issues?

Hey Guys.
I seem to be experiencing strange issues with my T-Mobile Amaze 4G and was wondering if it is only me.
Before I continue, I just wanted to note that I already performed a Hard Reset and received the OTA update a couple of weeks ago with no change in the problem.
It seems that everything seems to work well as soon as I restart the phone...but after a while, I notice that my e-mails do not get refreshed/notified from the e-mail app unless I actually go into the app itself.
I have set the e-mail app to check for new messages every 15 minutes with no peak time defined....that is....it checked every 15 minutes all day any time of the day.
Second issue is with Wifi. It seems flaky and I find I must turn off/on Wifi periodically not matter were I am getting Wifi from (i.e. - Home, Work, Coffee Shop, etc...)
Is it just me having these strange issues?
Is there a fix for it?
Thank All.
I don't have email issues when I am connected to 2G/4G.
I do, however, have issues with WiFi. Specifically the corporate WiFi at my work. It just won't connect. It gets stuck in the authenticating/disconnecting loop. Very annoying as this is the only phone I have not been able to connect to the WiFi at work. All of my prior phones connected with no problems, e.g. Motorola Photon, HTC Evo 3D, HTC Touch Pro II (Sprint and T-Mobile versions), iPhone 3/3GS/4. All of them will connect but my Amaze won't.
Is this par for the course or could I have a bad Amaze, again? I am on my 2nd one by the way. The first one had the same auth/disco loop problem, too.
My WiFi connects at work when it feels like it, which isn't often. At home its just fine.
I have the same thing happen to me as well between Home and Work Wifi.
It would seem that Corporate Wifi systems usually require the "Use secure credentials" to be enabled in order to connect (Settings, Security, Use secure credentials).
If it isn't checked...then no Corporate Wifi will connect.
It would seem that HTC released an update for the Amaze today (Dec. 12).
I have updated my phone...we'll see if it works any better.
Wish me luck...
Apparently HTC is rolling out an OTA that includes WiFi calling: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1319
Not sure if it's T-Mobile USA only or not...
Thought I'd post my observations...
My wi-fi at home (wpa2 personal) works flawlessly. Wi-fi at work (wpa2 enterprise) is able to connect and works great but after 40-50 minutes gets stuck in the authentication loop for unknown reasons. While in this auth loop, it seems to be in a transition state - neither wifi or TMO data mode and no synching occurs. Turning wifi off then back on will resolve but is a pita.
However, once the enterprise wifi is enabled (using credentials) the advanced power menu stops working - the long press of the power button functionality. Clearing the credentials usually re-enables the power button long press functionality, sometimes this requires a battery pull to restart.
Even with these small (at least for me) inconveniences, the Amaze is the best phone I've ever had!

Do you connect using WPA2 Enterprise at work? If so, are you able to enable Wi-Fi Calling?
I called 611 and they were not much help. Only thing came out of that call was maybe the WPA2 Enterprise enforces additional security for UMA (WiFi) calls resulting with REG99 error for me. I'll try from home with the WPA2 Personal connection later.
I'm reading TmoNews and it says IMS WiFi calling. 611 told me UMA...
Tried the WiFi calling from home (WPA2 Personal) and it works great. The router at work must be causing the REG99.
we're on a WEP network at work and at home so not sure why home works but not work. It may have to do with the firewalls and all that, but I'm not sure.
I ran into the same problem with email syncing. Here's a work around...
Use "tasker" and get the plugin for it called
"Synker"
Make a repeating profile that links to Synker and voila. You can control when and how often it syncs...

My WiFi performance stinks with this phone. I just got the 1.43 update today and it's not any better. With my old Nexus One I didn't have problems, but when connected at home (shown as WPA/WPA2 PSK) I get lots of time out errors and just about every action in the Market loads very slowly. When it finally does start a download they go OK but getting opening an app page or getting a download to start takes a long time. It is very weird.
I'm running stock.

I don't think it's the phone. I run stock and average 6-11Mbps down and 7-8Mbps up with my WPA2 Personal router connection.
I'm having data connectivity issues on the corporate Wifi (enterprise 802.1x encryption). I can connect initially, but after about 10 minutes (sometimes as much as 30 minutes), I'll lose data functionality but the wifi stays connected. My old Vibrant works fine at work, but the Amaze drops the data. It seems to happen when I switch access points. My sign-on credentials are fine. I can't seem to find any other similar issues out there and support was no help (t-mo, htc, etc). A factory reset didn't change anything. My home wi-fi works fine so this issue is a bit frustrating. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I'm feeling quite alone on this issue unfortunately....love the phone otherwise. I'm running stock.
I'm having the same problem with the router at my work. It will say connected but not data is sent or received. Any other phone works just fine on the same router. My amaze works just fine on any other router. I've disabled all security access on the router at work and the only phone that seems unable to connect to this router is the amaze. (I've tried 2 other w/the same result)

I have been using Beast mod for 3 days now and email has not been syncing, along with facebook and twitter. the sync icon has been on for a few days but nothing is syncing properly. Could it be something to do with a custom kernel?
Just to throw my 2cents in, I was struggling with connecting to the wifi at home, it would connect ok but then never transmit any data. Everything else connected and worked fine, also connected to other routers with the phone and no issues. Long story short, I limited my router to just B and G (no N) and it fixed everything. Phone works great now.

[Q] Wifi icon gray, Talk not working ... NOT A WIFI ISSUE THREAD!

So I picked up a Prime today (running 4.0.3), and I'm having a weird issue... I can connect just fine to wifi, everything works properly, except two things:
- My wifi icon is gray. Always. Regardless of where I am, the network I'm connected to, etc.
- Talk doesn't connect. The error is "Connection interrupted -- status updates temporarily unavailable"
I have cleared Market and Talk data. I have removed and re-added my Google account. I don't have PDANet or any other tethering software. I've checked my wifi connection to make sure there is no proxy or anything. My speed is just fine! I've disabled/reenabled Background Sync. Syncs on the Google account work just fine.
I'm at a loss here... HALP?
I'm having this problem too.. did you ever find a solution? anybody else?
Mine does that when Im too far away from the router but it goes blue when i get closer.

I'm having a similar problem. My icon starts out blue and everything works fine, but then after letting it sit for a while, my icon turns greay. Have not been able to figure it out yet. Pretty frustrating to set your tablet down and 15 minutes later have it stop getting notifications because it's disconnected itself or whatever it is when the icon turns grey.
I have my wifi settings set to always remain on while sleeping.

I tried but didn't work. I think we had different issues. It didn't sound like you could get a connection at all, while I get a connection that goes bad after the tablet has been idle for a while. Turning off/on wifi allows me to reconnect.
My android devices do this typically due to the firewall settings on whatever I am connected to, my wireless at work or example.

That is my assumption as well. I have the same issue but i figured it out. Its all you r wireless settings on the router. I have changed the broadcasting channel and since no more gray antennas. Its all i guess channel interference.

I've had that happen before, but in this case it was a constant 100% of the time thing, regardless of firewalls/connection/etc. Just something weird with the wifi profile on the device. I'm more convinced it had to do with restoring HC data after being upgraded to ICS.

I always wondered why my cell phone did the same thing, and in my searches, gray just means that it's not connected to Google's sync service. Now, while I agree with that to an extent.... I too have noticed on my cell phone and Prime (when tethered to my cell), that if either end is gray, I have non-functioning internet. This even happens if I have full bars and HSPA for my data connection. I personally have never noticed this on any of the 3 wireless home routers that I've connected to, however.

Same experience here. Grey typically means you have internet but no google services, but on my prime grey means no internet at all.
I've managed to get my wifi connection stable by using an app in the market called Wifi Keep Alive. I'm not sure if this app has any impact on battery draw in sleep mode, but I didn't notice much of a change after installing it. I left my Prime on all night last night which has always caused the grey icon, but my icon was still blue this morning and internet was functioning

Wireless on Cm7dx2

It seems like there are a good handful of users having issues with wireless going to sleep/losing connection. I have my wireless set to never sleep however when my screen is off for 15 minutes or so my wireless is in a state of "obtaining ip address" and never seems to re connect unless I toggle wireless on/off. I have also tried turning 3G off while in wireless range and this did not help.
I usually only see this when I'm at work and the connection to the AP is weak. I have not had this problem at home where the connection to the AP is strong.
I had this same issue with the Eclipse ROM version 1.3. Although it seems to be amplified with cm7.
Also my install was off a fresh sbf, this is my only issue and it is by far not a deal breaker.
Figured I would start this thread since the cm7 thread is getting quite large to sift through.
If anyone has a solid workaround please share!

I'm getting some of this behavior. I set my wifi sleep policy to "never," but every now and then I'll pick up my phone and notice the wifi disconnected itself (but was still "on") and won't get past "obtaining IP address."
So yeah, my fix has been the same as yours (turn off wifi, then turn it back on).
Same here. I downloaded wifi fixer off the market but that didn't help any.

I am unable to get mine to work at all. It will start to connect then when it gets to obtaining IP address it quits and the network shows disabled. It does this everytime no matter which settings I use.

Any suggestions on this issue? Anyone else having this problem?
I have to set my screen to stay on for large downloads or it disconnects. Sometimes it will lock up my whole network and have to reset router. Dlink dir615.

I've tried the wifi fixer app some users are recommending and i still have the wifi disconnects. It seems all that app does is toggle (reset) wifi until it reconnects.

Yeah, that's the same thing I get. It doesn't fix the problem with wifi losing connection. It just reconnects.

Same here. Everything I have tried has not helped at all.
Something I noticed on mine is when this happens the green skin on the wireless and signal (data network) icons is gone.
And if I turn off wifi and back on, the green skin is re applied and wireless works.
I'm running adw ex (paid) but other than that everything follows the install steps exactly in the OP from the cm7 beta thread. I've not installed the tethering patch pre or post BT.

Do you mean that your icons turn white? That's normal with any ROM or build. It means that you are connected with the router or cell service, but that it is giving you an ip and opening ports to allow you to use it.
With that said, since Eclipse 1.3, I have always had it randomly d/c or turn white, in which case even though I'm still technically connected, I can't use the service. Likely a Motorola problem.

Yes that's exactly what I mean, thanks for pointing that out I had no idea..
Thanks for the input!
Lol no problem. I only assume its a Motorola problem because its been fairly consistent with my phone, through multiple ROMs, but I can't remember prior to Eclipse 1.3 if I was experiencing it. For all I know it could be a build.prop mod that a lot of our devs are using that may indirectly do it.
I've been having the same (or similar) problems with Wifi on CM7DX2. I did some experimentation and some debugging and have it narrowed down to what I think is a problem with DHCPCD fetching an IP (or rather, failing to do so). Here's my observations:
If Wireless is off and I toggle it on, it has no problem getting onto the network at work (open 802.11g) or at home (WPA2-AES 802.11n). The connection seems fine for a while (so long as I'm using the phone, though that only tends to be in bursts of 10-15 minutes or so). Once the phone goes to sleep (or I put it to sleep) it seems to put wifi to sleep (only a guess), but only once the phone has been sleeping for a couple of minutes or more. If I sleep it and immediately wake it up, it seems okay. I have my wifi configured to never go to sleep.
Once wifi wakes up, it attempts to connect to the network, sits there at obtaining an ip, then fails, sometimes marking the connection as "Disabled". I did some troubleshooting, including poking through the phone logs and saw some stuff related to dhcpcd. Unfortunately, all that's sitting on my laptop at home at the moment. I'll try and get that posted when I get home.
Working on the theory that dhcpcd is the problem, I tried setting a static ip at home (can't do it at work or the network people yell at you). Sure enough, the problem seemed to go away. So, as far as I can tell, the wireless driver itself, as well as wpa supplicant, seem to work fine. It's just dhcpcd fails to be able to obtain an IP until you power cycle wireless.
If any of the devs who have more of a clue about the internals of the android network stack can chime in and ask more questions, I'd be more than happy to provide what information I can gather. I'm a Linux admin, so I'm very comfortable with a command line if I know what to look for. I'm just not too familiar with the android way of doing things (which seems very different than a normal Linux distro).
Thanks!
Edit:
I forgot, I have a crashplan backup of my laptop, so I was able to grab the file... here's the relevant bits of data related to dhcpcd
E/dhcpcd (23840): open_udp_socket: Cannot assign requested address
E/dhcpcd (22434): open_udp_socket: Cannot assign requested address
E/WifiStateTracker( 1978): DHCP request failed: Timed out waiting for dhcpcd to start
E/dhcpcd (22434): open_udp_socket: Cannot assign requested address
E/dhcpcd (23840): open_udp_socket: Cannot assign requested address
E/dhcpcd (24029): open_udp_socket: Cannot assign requested address
E/dhcpcd (24060): flock `/data/misc/dhcp/dhcpcd-eth0.pid': Try again
E/WifiStateTracker( 1978): DHCP request failed: Timed out waiting for dhcpcd to start
It repeats that stuff over and over again when it fails to be able to connect to a network. When it's successful, dhcpcd is silent.

Sounds like a install problem. all the skins have the icons so if its a big deal to not have them I would reinstall.

If you have had the issue across multiple roms and haven't sbf'd I would try that.

Its not an install issue. Icons for 3g and wifi turning white is common; it tells you that you're connected with the router or cell tower but aren't receiving a usable internet connection yet. I expect that its having a hard time obtaining an IP like one post already detailed.
Also, on a side note, my phone just decided after a week of normalcy to try to autocorrect "wifi" to "Sofia". Figured you should all be aware of this travesty.
I have my network setup to assign ip address according to mac address cause i need certain devices to always have same ip. Well i switched my Droid x2 to manual ip instead of dhcp and disconnects no longer happen when screen goes off. Going to test test of night but seems good so far. So for some reason it has to do with dhcp like other post said.

No I sbf before any new ROM i flash just for a fresh start.
It almost seems to me like the wifi is going to sleep even tho i have it set to never sleep. It also only seems to happen when i have a weaker signal to the AP. I don't even bother using wifi at work anymore because it got so bad. This happened with liberty and eclipse 1.3 but not nearly as bad as with cm7.
I mainly only notice it at work because i will leave my phone idle on my desk for long periods of time and when i return the wifi is stuck "trying to acquire ip address"and will not unless i toggle wifi. I do sometimes notice it while my phone is in use. I stream sirius/xm and anytime it cuts out i turn on my phone and sure enough it's "trying to acquire ip address".
Like i said in op it's not a deal breaker by any means it's just something i noticed got worse once i went to cm7.
This is by far the best ROM I've used on the dx2, although i haven't tried miui yet.

Some additional observation tonight. While setting a static ip will make sure you can get back online over wifi, I don't think it's actually preventing the root problem. I just woke the phone up and it looked like the wifi had disconnected while sleeping (the wifi "bars" were all grey for a second before they filled in). So, while there seems to be some problem with dhcpcd fetching an ip after waking from sleep, the wifi shouldn't be sleeping in the first place, but it is. Is it possible that setting in the CM7 Wifi Settings menu isn't actually affecting the behavior of the driver (or whatever actually puts it to sleep)?

I think your right, it was more consistent on static ip but it did eventually lock up my router again. The constant connects and disconnects must freak out the router.

What is wifi network "0x"?

I've noticed that whenever my wifi is on, and also the "always scanning" option is on - my phone suddenly connects to a network called "0x".
It doesn't really work - there is no internet. It happened in different places, inside and outside my country.
Does anybody know what it is?
UP
Old post, but happened something similar to me. Sometimes when I have just connected to my wifi network and I look on the menu it displays "0x". Your phone was probably connected to a public wifi or just bugged.
Still doesn't explain it though
In my understanding, the 0x is a garbage SSID that indicates that WIFI configuration data is obsolete.
Ite wonderful if u ask me ☺?
I booked a hotel room and when i arrived thr...my device got connected to Ox wifi and it has over 2Mbps speed...so i was curious about this Ox wifi hotspot so i searched on google and i found ur post and now i am more curios about it. What the hell is going on lol...
.
In my opinion it may have some connection with rooted devices bcz my device is rooted and i have samsung s8 as well and it neither finds this Ox wifi nor gets automatically connected☺:fingers-crossed:
Edit: As far as I see, it might a bug of Android with special cases of bad connection. Like it connects somehow, but can't get SSID. Turning on "avoid poor wifi" seems to fix it.
Same here. I've saved two wifi connections: one is my home network, other one is a network of free wifi transmiters offered by my ISP (UPC Wi-Free). My phone is Motorola Moto G with Android 5.1. It's not rooted and never has been.
I live around elder people and there were no strangers so I doubt some grandma suddenly established malicious network. Probably a bug, but the bug of what? Android? Some external software? I use Nova Launcher and Wigle Wi-fi. Do you?
0x seems to be prefix of hexadecimal numbers, but it doesn't make much sense. It wouldn't mean "hexadecimal zero" (which would be 0x0), but "hexadecimal nothing".

I've seen it too, then the actual SSID of my home network appears. Maybe Android shows '0x' when it doesn't know the name of the network it's on.
