[Q] What's the best way to sell my old phone (Evo4G) to pay for my Evo3D? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm sure many of you have done this to subsidize the cost of our snazzy new beast.
I have the original box (that awful, terrible egg carton thing) and owner's manual. The device itself is a refurb I got from insurance, since my original Evo4G was stolen.
My biggest question is: since it is rooted, is it best to offer it that way? I guess my question is whether there's any market value to it being already rooted and thus getting more from an eBay auction (unless theres a better alternative to eBay that anyone knows). Or maybe advertise the option of: I can send it to you rooted or if you don't want it that way, I can unroot it for you.
If someone wants it rooted, basically I just need to do a full wipe and flash a rooted stock ROM. If they want it unrooted, I believe I need to unroot first, flash a stock ROM, then turn S-ON (might have that in the wrong order).
I hope this is an appropriate thread for this forum (instead of the Evo4G one) as it would be helpful to other people looking for a way to obtain the Evo3D.

My suggestion to you is Craigslist. Sold my hero a month ago for 100 bucks

I tried to sell mine on Craigslist for 200 but had no offers. Sprint, unsolicited, sent me an offer for 150. They don't want the memory card or charger either.

I sold mine on Ebay for 270 each

Hello,
I sold my 4G for 300 Dollars on Craigslist. I did happen to get a Replacement the week before I listed it. While my original 4G was Rooted, I held off Rooting this one, but did not do the GB Update so that the Buyer would have the option of Rooting or not doing so.
My Upgrade was not supposed to be until September, but I pleaded with Retention and they reset my eligibility. This happened the day after my Refurbished 4G arrived.
I threw in 2 Otterbox Defender Cases, an HTC HDMI Dock, and pointed out the 4G was a 004 Version and was only a week old. I actually received multiple offers and ended up selling to a guy who lives on the same Barrier Island that I do.
I would think it would be best if you could get it back to S-ON and not disclose that it has been Rooted unless someone asks. You could even offer to Root and customize the 4G for the prospective Buyer. It really helped for me as the guy who purchased mine wanted me to Root it, but when he went to Sprint to Activate it he walked out with 2 3VO's instead. I am now trying to help him sell the 4G. I have gotten a few offers around 250, but he wants 300 and I have not exactly killed myself trying to sell it.
Also, I think that sometimes the 4G's Sprint sends out as Recertified are actually new Phones. The one I got sure seemed that way and again was 004.
It helped greatly I sold mine before the 3D's Release. The marketplace has changed since then. There is another Website that offers more than 150 if the 4G is in pristine condition as well. The name eludes me.
Cheers,
JJ

Sprint gives you $150.

I sold my 4G on craigslist for $200 about 90 minutes after I had it posted.

Well, it's VERY EASY.
Sprint will pay $150.00 for your evo 4G in account or store credit. You can either take your EVO 4G to a sprint store, or do it online and ship it to them:
http://www.sprintbuyback.com/
Just did it today at the store and paid only $49.99 for my new 3D!

If it is in good enough shape, I would sell it on eBay... considering I sold a refurbished one with a deadspot on the screen for $200 cash (Fully informed description I might add) You could likely get $250-300 for one in real good condition.
Good luck!!!

Craigslist is probably your best bet if you feel safe using it. Followed by ebay... You could also sell it on these forums which is the choice I took mostly because I wanted my phone to go to someone in the community.

RadioShack gave me $167 on trade for the 3VO. I also traded in my Hero for $50 so had a store credit. I had the boxes and the chargers for both.

I posted my 4G on swappa.com for $250 and it was sold within 2 days. The cool thing is that doesn't matter if you're rooted, people there seem to prefer it. Also if someone is interested, they have the option to buy your phone right away via paypal.

Never heard of it. Is it any good?

We sold ours on Craigslist for $225 each. $0 for the upgrade. Been doing this for YEARS. Depending on how rapidly you are upgrading you can sell them and profit from the sale.

From what I hear, yes. If I remember right, its specifically for selling/trading android phones.

Sold mine for 230 on craigslist. Might have gotten more on ebay, but it'd barely be with it after dealing with the fees and the scammers.

Sold my Verizon iPhone on craigs. Had 10 offers by morning. Sprint would have bought for $220. So there's always a fallback if you want quick cash. Assume EVO 4g should have similar results.

[Q] Radio Shack $75 smartphone trade in

I have called two Radio Shacks about this and not surprisingly they were clueless on the details. From the Radio Shack site:
Trade-in offer good 6/24 - 7/31/2011. $75 offer valid on select smartphones only. To be eligible, the phone must power on, cannot be PIN locked and must be in fully functional, working condition without any broken components, including, but not limited to, cracked display. In addition, the cell phone housing or casing cannot be cracked or broken, and neither the display nor the housing can exhibit any signs of liquid damage: Limit 1 per customer.

My Hero that has been beat to **** actually meets that criteria and I'd take $75 for it in a heartbeat. So...which phones are the "select smartphones" they reference? Is the Hero one of them?
When I called RadioShack, the guy I spoke with said the store has a list of phones 'guaranteed' to get $75 and that it was 'quite a few'. Unfortunately for me, an old HTC Touch Pro2 was not on that list .
I've been wondering the same thing because I would trade it no doubt for $75
if the list has been published, it'd be helpful! I have a htc snap, touch pro, centro, htc vogue that i'd love to get rid of for $75... total
Actually have a Question for you guys, if I take a Samsung Epic today will they traded in for a Gift Card?
The trade in right know is 140 for the Epic 4G... What do you think?
BTW.. The Epic is not in my name, it was a gift but it cannot be activated because the person has not pay the last bill, and the phone shows active.

Radio shack told me that my cdma hero would only get $52 Max from their buyback program. However, the guy seemed to be clueless as it took him 30 minutes to complete 2 Evo 3d preorders.
Can someone please post the $75 list if you have it?
Also, does it mention anything about the trade ins being stock/rooted?
EDIT. Signing up for RS email gets you a $10 off coupon. Maybe/maybe not work for Evo 3d as it says "May not be valid on certain other discounts." Whatever that means... worth a shot, I guess.
2.3.4 on a Hero? Yup
I just checked out my local RadioShack on 3rd Avenue in New York City and they had the list of cell phones that qualified for the $75 credit. Unfortunately the HTC Hero was not listed
See attached picture for the complete list posted at this RadioShack.
What a scam! $75 is theft for most of those phones!

Sprint has their own buyback program that you can use as a credit toward you account. They are currently offering $150 for the original EVO! I'm using that and my $45 "stay with us" credit they just gave me on top of my upgrade...which will land me the 3D for $5! Check Sprint's buyback program and see how much they will give you for your phones: https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/consumer/
They also accept phones from other carriers...

Better than nothing...and probably better than what anybody would give you for that phone! Hahaha! I paid $450 for the EVO on launch day because I bought the Hero on it's launch day with my upgrade and wasn't eligible for an upgrade in June when the EVO launched...I couldn't stand one more moment with the Hero! Sprint gave me $80 for it a year ago...win-win if you ask me!

I agree. I did it but radio shack are bastards to deal with. I had problems with my 3D and now I have a Photon and had issues. They suck to deal with and I'm under my 30 days. They don't wanna do exchanges or returns. I've had to have Sprint call and make them obey policy twice now. Wish I would have just gone to a Sprint store.

Just to be fair, my RadioShack here on Geary Blvd. in San Francisco has given me amazing service, even selling me the 3VO before my upgrade expired so I could if I wanted do a 30 day exchange for the Photon. FYI, according to Sprint, the $99 price point at Radio Shack has nothing to do with them, and will not be honored at Sprint store or online via Sprint.
New Photon Today
I just took up Best Buy Mobile on the $99 deal. I added a new line for my father and gave him my EVO 4G and picked me up a new Photon.
Slingplayer and Logmein are my most used apps.
Still working out the video chatting software. Got QIK running with video, so off to a good start.
Will try out my HDMI cable tonight.

I don't expect Sprint to honor that. My issue is with Radio Shack. I have had two defective devices so far and had problems getiing them exchanged even though they saw the problems and I am under 30 days. Sprint had to step in and make them do what they were supposed to. I live in the midwest though so it's probably completely different where you are.

I used to work for RadioShack, key word "used to". Now I'm a lead technician for Sprint and I can tell you straight up, it's a mistake to buy anything from RadioShack. Their policies are very crooked and there are enough loopholes in all of their warranties that the coverage is voided before you even walk out of the store half of the time. One of the local stores here is currently under investigation for lying about deposit amounts and pocketing the extra cash. They also do everything possible to get out of honoring the Sprint 30 day satisfaction guarantee. If there is so much as a light surface scratch anywhere on the phone, they will deny you a swap or even cancellation. It's pathetic, just don't do it.

They can't do that, it is a Sprint phone with a Sprint contract, they are just the middle man, they cannot do anything to the Sprint contract that says you can exchange your phone if you are not satisfied within 30 days, and you can actually do that 3 times. So really its 90 days. I would literally fight one of them if they didn't do what I asked them. Real talk.

If you are current Sprint customer, you can call telesales and get price match of RadioShack for $99 (YMMV). You will basically get additional $100 credit of the phone that is $199. My phone is on my way.......
It didnt take them any longer to get the Photon than it did Best Buy or non-corporate Sprint-branded stores. They arent refurbs.
SOME RS's do sell refurbs, its all very plainly stated, and they're pretty reasonable and often without contract so its saved my ass a time or two when out of town and a phone ends up broken.
They're selling at a lower price because NEW activations come with a kickback/monthly that extensions dont. There used to be a few guys that did this exclusively on Ebay, they were a legit official Sprint partner selling phones for virtually nothing on new activations only. I got a PPC6700 or 6800 for basically free when they retailed for 500+ and all I had to do was add a line...which was fine with me since I had $10 Vision and free add-a-phone back when you could get all those things.
anybody have any luck getting it on upgrade for that price??

I have to agree. I called a local radioshack when the Evo 3d came out and was just inquiring about their return policy. I talked to two people there and they said there was no return policy and if you don't like the phone that you are stuck with it unless you want to exchange. I explained that their has to be a 30 return policy of some sort. They both explained that it was not honored if the phone was used at all. Then after pulling my hair out from their stupid statements, I explained no one has such policy. These guys are idiots and the sad part is there were two idiots under the same roof. I thought there was a rule against that. Anyway I called another store and they said there was a return policy but it was only for exchanges.
Price tag
No, Best Buy Mobile , in our local mall , had a $99 price tag on the Photon. Best Buy and Radio Shack aplly the mail in rebates at time of purchase.
The Photon was $106.74 , plus the price of a Zagg shield, out the door.
I also went by Sprint and bought, the dock for the Photon. Great product and well worth the money.

Glad it's helping! I couldn't get my $100 back (yet) cause they said I was 2 days too late on my 30 day policy, but I'm sickin my Fiancee on em tomorrow! Sick balls, chopper!
Pew! Pew! Pew! From my Mo-Pho!
Just got a refund from Best Buy. Took my receipt to the customer service counter, said that I saw the phone for $100 less, and asked if I could get the difference back. She refunded the $100 no questions asked.
My original purchase was an upgrade, not a new contract.
I ordered mine through my Customer Care rep about a week ago. I called her back this morning to see what she could do and she said that I would need to return the one I have to a store or she could send me a return envelope. I was hoping they could just price match a credit for me. Oh well.
Now my worry is...my current phone is working great. I will prbly go return this one and stop by Best Buy and get one that's bunked.
Worth a $100 risk though.
I just bought my Photon at Best Buy as an upgrade and got it for $99 and they also gave me a free Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector. I saw the stock of phones in their closet and they all (the Photons) had Zagg boxes rubber-banded to the Photon boxes so anyone buying a Photon from Best Buy gets the phone for $99 and a free screen protector. They even had them pre-installed on the phones and when they saw that there was a hair under my screen protector they pulled it off and re-applied a brand new shield.
I traded in my Evo for $126 (just gave them the phone and the box; no cable, charger or memory card) so the Photon cost me nothing and I have $19 left on my Best Buy card after tax.

Looks like the price is being changed in stores today so it should be very easy to get that 100 back from bestbuy. They were changing out the price when I was there. What a great deal. I just came back to the photon after my little expo with the NExus S. Glad to be back. I can finally retire my Evo now.

Buying ebay phones?

I have to wait a little while until my current contract with Sprint is up before getting the Evo LTE. But I see them on ebay for about the same money as one would cost me in the store once I'm upgrade elegible. I'm wondering how the ebay phone process works to get it working on the Sprint network? I've only bought phones from Sprint and BB in the past. I know I need a clean ESN, but what I'm wondering is about activation and insurance. Does it cost me money to activate an ebay phone or can I just do it through the website tools? Is it possible to get insurance for the phone (aftermarket I'd assume)? If so, who do you recommend? Anything else to know about getting it working?

just tell them to turn on the insurance when you activate or they will "forget" to say anything. I bought an OG EVO from e-bay as long as the seller is reputable you will be ok.
I think that technically there's an activation fee, but from what I've seen before it's not that hard to bypass. If you're finding a phone on ebay that costs the same as the subsidized price, then I'd think very hard about what I was doing. These phones are normally 2-4x the price you pay when you get a subsidy; you're putting yourself up for some real risk if an unsubsidized phone costs as little as a subsidized new phone.
If you do buy it though and it does turn out to be a clean ESN/MEID, then first off congrats since you just dodged a massive bullet and saved tons of money, but also go and sign up for TEP, at least for a few months. The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

Activation fee is charged on a new line or upgrade...not an ESN swap
Plus one for hidden issues/bad ESN.
I would seriously question an EVO on the second hand market for $200-300

We're definitely on the same page as far as second-hand devices go. That said, I would love clarification on the fee for hidden issues. It's not something I've ever heard of. I'm not discounting it as a falsehood by any means, I really am just very surprised to see such a thing and would love details. Screenshots work best IMO.
I've seen them go for 300-350 but less than that is a bad phone
Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I can get TEP from Sprint on a phone I did not buy from them. I've found SquareTrade offers a warranty, though. We have used them before, so that is probably the way I'd go there.
There are a lot of these phones on ebay for under $250 right now. I figure $250 is about the break even point when I include the activiation fee and almot 10% sales tax we pay around here. I can't imagine they are all scams. I appreciate the concern, though.

you can totally get TEP from sprint on a phone you did not buy from them, I have got it on the last phone I bought. I just asked and they turned it on, it was that simple.

Cool. Good to know.
I look at Craigslist and Ebay almost daily to see what they're selling for. I have one and also the GSIII. One must go soon and if its the EVO, I don't think I'll get more than $300 for it. Some are selling brand new EVO's, well suppose to be, for $250 on CL. My opinion, which means nothing, thinks that maybe the EVO has a bad reputation right now from the people that swapped them out for the GSIII. Not sure.
Seems like the S3's are going for much more money. Could be it's because they work for every carrier?

There are ways, but it isn't the norm. And is against policy

S3's are offered by all 4 but do not have interchangeability . A sprint s3 will not work on Att etc.
It's more of a Flagship, heavily advertised phone that more people want. Simply supply vs demand

I bought new evo lte from ebay seller. When I called sprint to activate on my line the agent even asked do you want to keep TEP and I said yes. No problem at all and it is there looking on sprint's website in my profile.

i have bot multiple phones/devices on e-bay. have not had any issues with activation.
one time i bricked a device and the guy i originally bot it from was able to fix it for a small fee.
The activation fee is only on new phones. It is only when the esn is first activated on sprint. So if I bought a new phone and activated the esn but left it new in box and then sold it to you there'd be no activation fee as the esn was already in sprints system

AT&T $100 Trade-in Promotion Starting

I just wanted to post this for all of you considering getting a new phone on AT&T, such as the One, S4, Blackberry, etc. According to what I have read, it looks like AT&T is starting a promotion tomorrow that will give an instant $100 or more credit toward a new phone of your choice when you trade in your old working smart phone, ( 3 years old or less). This may help in the decision making process for many people.

I just posted an article on this on our site! LOL It's a pretty good deal!
It will push me back into the store tomorrow. I was in the store today and almost bought one, but I wanted to consider it a little longer and wait until the weekend. I am done thinking about it, lol.
well i already traded in a phone directly through HTC for $100 and its gonna be for a visa prepaid card. plus you have to do this in store and they dont have the 64GB version available at stores. i guess its a good deal for those that missed the cutoff for the HTC deal though.

I actually signed up today and received a code. My 8525 qualifies for HTC, but not for AT&T.

What did you tell him that you got the $200 credit? I just signed up with AT&T a week ago and I still cant get my 36 dollar activation fee waived
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Wow glad I came across this thread.. I'm locked in a 2 year contract with my s3 so this will definitely ease that upgrade fee
If I bought my One brand new from craigslist could I use this to get an S4 or another One?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Cool, so this is retroactive?
I got my One on release day, so still within the 14 days - if I go back to the store, they should credit me, right? I have a Nokia 900 that I would gladly trade in for an easy $100, lol.

An 8525? Wow. That is old. HTC was taking that for a trade in? I wish I would have known. I could have dug mine out of the drawer.
I had the One..exchanged it for the S4 and came back to the One. Anyone that that has the S4, should definitely get the One if you can, while the bootloader is still unlockable
I'd rather go on swappa or any number of other sites and sell my old kit for a lot more than $100 unless it's an old phone. Just about any decent, present day smartphone is worth more than $100. They're just catering to those who either don't know there options or don't want to deal with trying to sell on their own.

You could go pick up a cheap android phone from virgin mobile for $30-50. This would get you $50 off. I'm trying to find out what phones are eligible. I sell my stuff on ebay too, but a free $50 is nice to stick it to at&t

I checked. They showed a $0 payment for an 8525. For a galaxy sII, they offer less than AT&T. But, Swappa is a better deal than AT&T.

From everything I've been told, it's $100 minimum.
Just wanted to say, bought my One two weeks today and went back to the AT&T store to see if I could get in on this promo. Not a problem at all, traded in an old HTC Inspire 4G and they gave me the $100 credit, which by request, they applied to my bill. What's great is, average selling price on eBay for the Inspire is around $80.

i just told them that i see that you guys have the trade in promotion going that you get 100 dollars for trading in your used phone. i actually read this thread wrong which is why i called inthe first place lol. because i thought they give you 100 dollars on top of what they already give you. the wife traded her iphone 5 and i traded a nexus 4. the rep gave me a 200 dollar credit no questions asked. probably because she can't see on her system exactly what phones we traded in.
