[Q] Q/A Official ATT Gingerbread OTA UL BL Root - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thx for your support help and patience to me, kind of new in this stuff, here is my question and I hope someone with absolutly real experience can answer.
Here is my reality, I have an Atrix with the new OTA update gingerbread, no UL BL, no root, no mod, clean...Can I still unlock the bootloader with the2dcourt guide in briefMobile? or I am stuck in the world of no mod forever? This is because I am tired of searching. someone guy s say you can, other say can´t (BriefMobile for example)...I really apreciate the help and a little guide just the names of treats or files I would search

I'm in the same boat, was waiting for the official update before making any mods, and I have to say, after a couple of hours on here this morning I'm a bit confused.
I got root fine (brief mobile's is solid for that) but now I'm trying to figure out the BL. Some posts say the OTA will hard brick if an SBF is flashed, others point to guides that use the SBF flash...

You can still unlock the BL with pudding and install CWM to flash custom rome. Use the preinstall method to root or use a pre-rooted custom rom.
DO NOT try to flash back to a stock froyo build or you will hard brick.

You will only hard brick with the OTA if you attempt to flash back to 4.1.83 or earlier stock builds. You can use the fruity cake builds (as they have pudding in them) to go back if you had to.
From here on out you have to use pudding to unlock the boot loader to enable custom rom flashing. Just follow the pudding thread for more info on that.

You can't flash an older SBF file, that will cause you to brick. The SBF files you should avoid are pretty much all of them except Gingerbread, Unlock, and Radio SBF's.
You can unlock your device even though you've updated. But you're stuck with that bootloader forever, but you can always downgrade with a fruit cake I believe.
It all seems confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I had run several custom roms on my G1, but much less of that experience is proving to be helpful than I had hoped.
Thanks everyone for your speedy replies, I'll go give pudding a shot after breakfast.

if i flash pudding, just the unlock part and then fastboot the unlock....will i have to load a rom, or will gingerbread 2.34 still be there?

Okay, so the official pudding thread recommends beginners follow Brief Mobile's BL unlocking guide. I did, and got the message "oem unlock is not implemented". However, the 1st step in the guide is "If you’re on Gingerbread, skip to step 13". I am on GB from the OTA, but the guide was published a month ago, before the OTA update.
I'm guessing they said that because at the time it was published, you would need to have already done those steps to be on GB, so I may need to go back and follow through all the steps I skipped the first time. But if they had GB users skip steps because they would be harmful to GB phones, then that would be bad... Advice?

Go through the whole thing. If you soft brick, just run fastboot oem unlock again.

Thx for the help and quick response everybody, I will try to put all the step together and get the ULBL, xda always there indeed

Step by step ULBL, Root for OTA GB
**I've been getting PMs for clarification: I didn't do a single mod to my phone before this morning. Stock ATT/Moto Atrix, installed stock ATT/Moto OTA GB update yesterday. Following these steps I am now BLUL and rooted.**
So here are all the steps needed to get a stock, OTA Gingerbread Atrix Unlocked and rooted:
1. Follow Brief Mobile's BL unlock guide here.
Things I found out that you may like to know:
-You will need to complete all steps *even the ones the guide says to skip*.
-When you enter your device unlock code, it is case sensitive; use caps-lock.
-The most recent SBF flash is in the XDA IHOP pudding thread, use this instead of the older file linked to in the Brief Mobile guide.
-When you are done, reboot will take a *long* time; just stay calm.
Edit: After 30 min on the dual core screen with the "unlocked" in the corner I pulled the battery... after reboot everything seems fine.
2. Follow Brief Mobile's guide to root here.
Thanks to brief mobile, and to the xda folks who held my hand through this whole thing the first time

Hey, I appreciate it, and I'm glad to help! But honestly, I stopped at each step and asked the experts what to do, and then just wrote down in one post everything they told me.
I'm glad it's saving time for those coming behind me, but the real thanks belongs to the guys who helped me through it this morning; thanks again guys!

[Q] Help 2.3.4 locked boot

Okay guys, i flashed the 2.3.4 ota as soon as it came out (before all this trouble with it of course) and now i am stuck because i was under the impression that the new bootloader would be unlocked so i had never even though about eating any pudding before the fact. Now i come to my trouble, im running a totally stock 2.3.4 att and i cant seem to find a way out.
Question #1- If i have a locked bootloader can i fruitcake back?
Question #2- Is there a possible way to unlock the new bootloader?
Question #3- How in heck do i get root, im on windows 7 and i recently tried the two bat files that one of the devs released and they were a no go, it didnt seem to flash the preinstall when i tried to look for it, it wasnt there. I have been quietly trying to fix this on my own for days now i am asking for a little help. Im stumped.
I got root using the /preinstall method with those 2 .bat files posted yesterday.
From page 30-35 is the guidance I followed from mramirezusa.
Other than that we are in the same boat.. I read puddings will flash relatively safely.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159950&page=30

hey man first things first. dont panic, you are not stuck. this is temporary at best, in the mean while theres plenty of stuff you can do, sbf is not safe to begin with. so actually be gladd you only got to use RSD one time
first things first, get yourselfed unlocked, pudding will do the trick. once after pudding, you never have to touch RSD
Once you are done with pudding go ahead and get tenfars unlocked cwm
once you are done with that you are free to flash pretty much all the roms, as usually custom roms, or fruit cakes dont have bl, only the rest
enjoy
Okay guys, thanks for your help. but let me get this clear, i do not have a unlocked bootloader, im a pudding virgin. I can simply rsd the 1.83 with pudding and thats it? No worries no nothing?

Yes but you still can't use any other sbf. I'd use the raw pudding sbf, unlock, then use CWM from here on out. No more rsd
Sorry about that. There is just the unlock and then the unlock packaged with 1.8.3. The one that has has been causing bricks from my understanding is the packaged one. Be sure you flash just the unlock.
Anyone know what exactly will be erased from /data after flashing the unlock? Also I don't want to restore backed up files that will conflict with new ones. Any guidance on this is appreciated.

All user data is wiped when unlocking. The 1.8.3 sbf with pudding is safe to flash but i recommend just using pudding and then CWM and ditch rsd.

Agree, just use the pudding only sbf. to unlock , then preinstall to get root.
Make sure to have 50 or so battery so you don't run into the trouble I had with battery being to low to fastboot. Also once you flash pudding you wont be able to boot the phone, don't panic just follow steps to fastboot oem unlock and phone will boot fine afterwards.

Which did you flash? Pudding or 1.8.3 with pudding?
Try connecting your phone to pc select fastboot and finish the pudding instructions (fastboot oem unlock)
It might boot then.

Here is what I did.
1. If you were to update to the OTA 4.5.91. Or already on the OTA 4.5.91 you can still unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash pudding only SBF so you can unlock the bootloader. http://diamantephoto.com/fastboot.rar direct link. Flash this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1136261 Original Post about pudding.
It will go to a text only 14 option screen and say something like boot failed 0x1000. Don't freak out and tell me you bricked you phone blah blah blah. You still have to unlock the bootloader by choosing fastboot from your phone and connecting it to the computer via usb. Make sure you have ADB with fastboot tools installed on you computer.
Open command prompt from you computer and type fastboot oem unlock. It'll display warning about voiding warranty and a unique device id. Type again fastboot oem unlock ############. The # are the unique device numbers. Don't type # it wont work. The instructions are posted on the pudding thread if you would like to read more about it.
Then type fastboot reboot to reboot. Unlock should be displayed on top left of screen and it'll take 5 long mins to boot up.
3.Then you need to install CWM and root.
You'll find instructions in the developers form. But if your lazy here is the CWM link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1138541 follow the instructions or every time you reboot you will loose CWM. For root there are two available for gingerbread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1140110 I used this one and got root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1138204 I hear this works too.. Haven't tested read the post if you want to use this method.
As always don't blame me for bricking if you happen to do so. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. these are the steps I took to unlock and everything works great. Absolutely no problems with my phone after wards.
One thing unlocking your bootloader will format/erase data. Basically a factory data reset so make sure you backup everything with titanium or you favorite app. I would not restore system apps as i've had a few problems with email and motoblur force closes.
Is there a way to root without unlocking the bootloader?

Out of the loop, help?

Hey Everyone,
It seems that since the bootloader got unlocked, things with the atrix has skyrocketed and there is many things I'm unfamiliar with. I was unfamiliar back then too but managed to get a pseudo rom running.
Anyways, I need help going from a Greyblurred atrix to an updated Atrix with gingerbread , unlocked bootloader , and rooted.
It would be great if anyone could point me in the right direction.\
Thanks ahead of time!
Well I am assuming you are not unlocked, correct? also I will assume you have not done the OTA (Over The Air) update of gingerbread (2.3.5)..
First off, if none of the above has been done at all you need to go here, IHOP and read these directions over, and over, and over before you start to follow them and execute what they say..
after you do that, or if you need further clarification just write back here
I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 its an auto scripter u will soft brick fix is built in READ EVERYTHING first. Mine actually froze rite after brick and wouldnt allow me to follow instructions exactly,if it happens to u dont freak.just pull battery for a few moments reboot into fastboot and use the fix

Ahhh, school got super busy and still never got the chance to do this.
So it seems I can use RSDlite to just flash to an older sbf and go through the updates to the now 2.3.4 and then unlock from there and get CM7?
I don't need to back up any apps or anything so can I go straight to flashing SBF right over Greyblur?

as long as you've never done the OTA before, you can flash a froyo SBF and go back to stock that way.
there's also an unlocked bootloader for froyo in the pudding thread, you don't have to update to 2.3.4 to unlock and get CM7 (which is gingerbread anyways)
just go to the International House of Pudding thread in the dev section and read up on the right .sbf to flash to unlock your bootloader.

You can always go back to stock. The threads provided above give nearly step-by-step directions on how to do those. As stated, QBKing77 does it in videos, so you can follow along and actually see how it's done.
The unlock is extremely simple, and so is going back to stock. As long as you follow the steps, you can just flash the sbf and lock the bootloader in a couple minutes.
It's worth to note, though I'm sure you know, that at this time unlocked bootloaders lose 4g. It's an issue that is being worked on though.
yes , thank you. will flash Cm7 hopefully tonight

^ This is good advice.
If you plan to use any of Joker's roms then it will be best to flash 198-7 before unlocking.
Follow QBKing77's video to unlock. The only difference is the pudding file is now smaller (1MB - derpunlock) than the one he used in the video so will take hardly no time to flash. Also, if I remember correctly, he mentions "Fastboot" mode once when actually booting into "RSD" mode - do what he does, and take the same actions he takes and it works just fine.
To re-lock, some folks are having issues with the process and there is no video to follow. I just re-flash one of the stock SBFs in RSDLite (198-7, 198-6, or 154-5) and that relocks the phone. It takes longer, but it works every time.
Common errors:
Not following QBKing's video
Flashing the "235pudding" file - this will flash the Electrify's GB 2.3.5 sbf and currently there is no unlocking or returning from this.
If I unlock can I nandroid back to my 4g rom or do I have to flash the sbf to relock first?

Confused Unlocking Direction

I want to thank everyone who has given great information here as my last two phones this place has been invaluable place of information.
I am now trying to be more "carefull" for a mistake I made. I ended up hard bricking a phone with the dreaded Failed to boot 0X1000. I have rooted phones before and understand the process enough to get by.
However I am back at square one I was months ago when I bricked my phone (since have gotten a new atrix), Im ready to try this again. I have done ALOT of reading but to be honest there seems to be do this and do thats than people in the world. I dont want to make the same mistake again.
Trying to find "the way" seems to be at issue. Ive seen everything from avoid RSD to using it to things not addressing as if the brick issue even happened. I feel like theres no path to follow. Im wondering how many others feel this way too who are at the crossroads of doing it.
My phone is rooted, and has Android 2.3.4 and System 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US if that help to point me in the right direction.
Thank you!
You need to go to the IHOP thread, I believe it is stickied, and download only the unlock sbf. You will flash that with RSD and then follow the unlocking directions.. I.e. boot to fastboot, then issue the command "fastboot oem unlock" and follow the instructions on screen. Once done, you will be unlocked. You can then flash recovery via fastboot. You are then free to flash ROMs.
The only reason to ever have to flash an SBF after this is for warranty reasons. However, DO NOT flash a froyo one. Only flash gingerbread based ones or you will hard brick again.
Any questions?

Yes if you follow the instructions in the IHOP thread you shouldn't have a problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261&highlight=international+house+of+pudding
Here is a useful step-by-step guide to unlocking bootloader:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
I personally would use the pudding file over the unlock file linked in the Briefmobile walkthrough, i'm sure they are the same but i know for a fact the pudding file works. This at least gives you the step-by-step procedure you are wanting.
Here's a video as well:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4Bf9QIZsRI
I was pretty new to all this when i unlocked my atrix and didn't have any issues, just make sure you follow the instructions properly. Also as d3athsd00r stated try to avoid flashing SBF files via RSD after your bootloader is unlocked, the safest way to flash stuff is via CWM recovery.

New Atrix 4G user needs help

Hi guys,
Just now got a new Atrix 4G off Amazon. It's an AT&T unlocked one. I am totally confused with all the processes posted here about unlocking the boot loader and stuff. I used to be a Defy user, but rooting and installing ROMs in Defy were a bit simpler than this.
Model - MB860
System - 4.5.141.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android version - 2.3.6
Kernel - 2.6.32.9
I want to flash either MIUI or Cyanogenmod. Should I unlock the bootloader first or root first. Can anybody help me out, pointing the right links? I couldn't find any guide for 2.3.6. and I don't want to brick my device.
Thanks a ton in advance
Wolvish
Whenever getting my Atrix replaced by Best Buy Mobile, I find these steps easier to follow in lesser words:
1. download ROM of choice and place it on the internal memory card
2. use automatic boot loader script
3. flash Romracer's recovery via command prompt
4. flash ROM
5. profit!
It's just easier to do this vs. rooting the phone/stock ROM first, finding that install-recovery.sh crap, and then doing the process to unlock the bootloader/flashing custom ROMs.

Read the threads you think don't cover 2.3.6. They have recent comments so you should assume people commenting might be on 2.3.6. I was on the same version as you and I'm unlocked and running CM10. The titles of the methods aren't updated but they still work (some of them) for yours. The threads god into amazing detail about how you do it, but make sure you read the comments too because those are more up to date than the original post. And if you say it's unlocked already then why would you unlock it again? If you boot up your phone and it says unlocked in the upper right corner when the motorola symbol is up then you are past the hard part. After that just get a custom recovery (Romracers) and flash your ROM

It does not show 'unlocked' during boot up. It's unlocked from AT&T (working with my SIM card). Isn't that different from a unlocked bootloader? So I should do that pudding thing next? BTW what is automatic boot loader script?
I read that downgrading from 4.5.141 is causing hardbrick, that's why I'm scared..

Yes, two completely different things.
AT&T has absolutely nothing to do with your bootloader. You need to deal with that yourself. And yes, you need pudding for that.
Can I use this method instead?

It's the same exact thing.
