Vegan gb 7.0. I can connect to the web just fine, but I can't download anything and anything needed for a data connection wont work. It's an intermittent problem, my wifi status bar will be white when it doesn't work and green when it does. Pershoots latest kernel.
I've noticed the same thing with the white icon vs. green icon when using wifi that is filtered/proxied. Like using wifi at a local coffee shop where you have to agree to the terms of use. You are connected to the access point but not to the outside WAN.
I think your connection issue may be more network related than device related.
What type of wifi connection are you using? Is this a personal one or a public one? Do you have access to the router's configuration? (Linksys web interface is 192.168.1.1 by default, for example.)
Personal wifi...psa2. I put my tab to sleep last night not working ...now it is. I've restarted before and it didn't fix it. Belkin router.
Yes this is happeningto me.....so when thewifi is green I can download but when its not I cannot download..... I did nothing itjust goes back and forth from time to time ....anyone know how to fix???
Network troubleshooting.
To the best of my understanding, this occurs when you have connectivity to the wireless access point, not to the internet itself. I think it turns green when it is able to contact Google services. Generally, this would mean that your wireless router is either not reaching your internet service provider (ISP), or there is a proxy not allowing your device to use the access point as a gateway to the ISP.
If you're on a public network, like Starbucks, McDonalds, etc., you may need to agree to an acceptable use agreement. I've found I need to use the default browser for this.
If you're on your home network, the next time the icon is white, check the following things.
Are any other devices on your network having a similar problem?
Does your modem have power? and are the lights indicating trafic?
Can you access your modem's web interface, and run any diagnostic tests to be sure it's reaching your ISP? (You may need to contact your ISP for further instructions.)
Is your router able to contact the modem?
To determine if this is the case you'll need to trouble shoot your router and its connection to your modem.
(The following are some defaults.)
Model IP address user password
Linksys 192.168.1.1 admin admin
Belkin 192.168.1.254 admin "blank"
Netgear 192.168.61.1 administrator password
I could have mixed up one or more of these, but it's one variation or the other.
The info may even be on the bottom of your router.
Once you've accessed your router, make sure it's getting an external IP address from your modem.

Hoping to get some dev or experienced user to look at the dock ethernet. I know I've seen posts about possible fixes, but I think we are closer to what is causing the problem & need assistance in fixing it. If you look at this post (it's short- only 5 posts I believe) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185160 you can see that even with wireless turned off & the tab started on the dock, the ehternet interface is up, it draws an ip & is able to connect to the interent with the browser & other programs but there are selected apps (Market, Amazon Store, Pandrora, Crackle) that say no network connection unless the wireless is turned on. The problem appears to be that the apps are only looking at the wifi staus in Android.
To test this, I started the tab on the dock with both ethernet & wifi connected. The dock ethernet connected directly to a switch (which is connected to my router) and the wireless connected to a wireless accesspoint (not router) that is connected to the switch. Allowed both to draw IPs. Checked the interfaces & both eth0 & wan0 are up, have different IPs, different mac addresses. I then disconnect the network cable that runs from the access point to the switch removing phyical connection to the network so that the wireless connection from the tab to the access point stays up but goes nowhere. I am then able to use Pandora, check email, use Crackle, download from Market & Amazon, etc all throgh just the ethernet port.
I've seen sample code on the net for testing the android Connection Status and the examples are checking the wifi only. Does anyone know of a way or can a dev modify our roms so that andrid not only checks for wifi, but also the eth0 inteface?
Alright, did the usual searches and have the usual answers wich don't seem to pertain to what i'm doing.
I have one static connection allowed to wifi router. I wish to use phone to share this connection with more than one device not using mobile data but the broadband connection.
Basically connect phone to broadband wifi. Have devices connect to phone to share wifi.
Again, to prevent any confusion: I do not want to share mobile connection on phone. I wish to share wifi connection with other devices from phone. ie. I have only one connection allowed to router and I wish to use phone to share that connection with PC and PS3.
Sorry for redundancy in stating this but people seem to miss the point or not read and suggest applications like Barnacle wich only share mobile internet or USB tethering wich only works for PC.
Well from what I understand Wi-Fi must be off on phone in order to create the Wi-Fi signal on the phone so this may be impossible

I know exactly what you are saying, and I am pretty sure it is impossible. I currently have wi-fi service where I have to log in, with only 1 device allowed log in at a time. When you turn on the wi-fi hotspot on your phone, it automatically turns your wi-fi off. You can only use the hotspot feature using your data connection over 3g or 4g. I have tried everything. If you are in the same situation, where you can only log one device on the internet connection, you may want to try spoofing your IP. Change the IP on the other devices to the IP on your phone. This may allow you to log the other devices in as well (so I have read). That may be your only option.
Yeah looks like Im going to connect PC and use an ethernet cable with connection sharing to get PS3 to work. Phone will have to use mobile data unless PC and PS3 arent being used.
Or phone gets wifi and USB tethered to pc and then connection shared (not sure this will work).

I have done this using a Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP ethernet converter. You connect to the wireless source (WAP) then it acts like a router and allows you to plug devices into it, has four ports but you could use a switch if more are needed. Each device aquires an IP from the converter and is hidden to the WAP, looks like one device is connected. Pretty easy to setup. Check it out.
My friend has a Galaxy Player 5.0 and he can connect to other WiFi Networks(It can connect to our school's network, the public optimumwifi network, etc.) but his house's. All the computers in his house can connect to his Home WiFi. His network name shows up on the Wireless Networks list on his Galaxy Player 5.0. He tries to connect to it. He types in the right WiFi password. It says "Connecting", then "Obtaining IP Address" and then right away, it says "Disconnected". Then when he sees it on the Wireless Networks list again, below his network name, it says "Disabled, secured with WPA/WPA2 PSK" His router is a Belkin G Wireless 957B73 and all his computers in his house can connect to it, but his Galaxy Player. I tried to help him via Skype ShareScreen. I thought it was because of some setting on his router. I told him to go to 192.168.2.1(His Default Gateway) for the Belkin options and stuff and I don't know what to do from there. I'll keep checking thread and will try to reply ASAP to your post replies if need be.

Do you know if he has MAC filtering enabled? if he disables all security does it do the same thing?
You can have him try and clicking on "forget this network" on the droid and then try logging in again

Every device has a unique identifier called a MAC address, in the security settings you can enable MAC filtering to only let on devices you have listed connect to the network. chances are he dost have it enabled (most people don't use it)

The Galaxy Player 4.0/5.0 have a ton of issues connecting to Belkin Routers for some reason (it's a known issue). What you have to do is create a static IP for the player in the advanced settings. Go to Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Wi-Fi Settings, hit the menu button and then hit Advanced.
After that select "Use static IP". Now you may have to call Samsung to help you with this part since we all have different settings, but I believe your
"IP Address"- should be set to the one that is shown above, however, the last number should be changed a number that's between 2-255 (don't use the same last number )
"Gateway"- is the IP of your default gateway. On your PC (Windows 7) go to "Network and Sharing Center" then click "Wireless Network Connection Status" after that click "Details" and Look for "IPv4 Default Gateway".
"Netmask"- most likely 255.255.225.0, or 255.255.225.1
"DNS 1"- Is the IP of your DNS Server. Again on Windows go type "Run" in the search bar, then type in "cmd" and press enter a black box should pop up. Paste this "ipconfig /all" without the quotes of course and Look at where it says "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connects:" It should be the last one and say "DNS Servers"

I have had a Netgear Powerline Adapter system set up in my Bedroom (XAVNB2001) for the past year and a half, because the signal from my Cisco E4200 doesn't effectively reach up there. It has its own SSID, on the 2.4GHz band. It has been completely solid and reliable, and I use it all the time with my Verizon Samasung Galaxy Nexus (stock ROM 4.2.2), and Asus Infinity Tablet (stock ROM 4.2.1). My wife also used it without problem with her prior Motorola Droid 3.
But for reasons I can't identify, my wife's new Galaxy S4 won't connect to it. Also Stock ROM 4.2.2. Her phone sees the Adapter/SSID, and shows a strong signal when we're up there. I enter the passcode with the same encryption (WPA/WPA2 PSK) as I have on the other working devices, and it quickly goes to "Acquiring IP" but this never completes. It tries a couple of times, and usually ends up saying: "Network Disabled Because Internet Connection Is Slow." But it is not slow - works as fast with the other devices as when I'm connected to the Cisco downstairs near the Router. I have carefully entered the passcode (checking the box to show the characters to make sure I'm not putting in a typo) a dozen times.
There is no problem connecting her S4 to any other WiFi network we've encountered (to the Cisco downstairs directly, at my kids' houses, hotels, etc.).
I can't see any trouble-shooting steps to even identify the problem. Usually this is a no-brainer: you see the SSID, enter the passcode, and you're in. What could possibly be the problem here??

You could try creating a static IP address using the MAC of the GS4 on your Cisco router. It sounds like it's authenticating, but unable to assign an IP for whatever reason.
Disable WiFi Multimedia (WMM) or the equivalent... BOOM! should work fine.
Also, if it's a MAC filter issue turn your MAC filtering off. If that is the issue your GS4 will connect instantly once MAC filtering is off.

I assigned a Static IP to the GS4 through the Router without difficulty. I then went to the GS4's settings for this SSID, changed it to Static IP, entered the assigned IP, kept the Gateway as 192.168.1.1, and changed the DNS settings to what is shown through IPCONFIG when I check my Desktop.
It now connected, but shows a DNS error when trying to go to a given website. So something funky is going on there. The phone shows a setting for "Network prefix length" and has a value of 24 - I've not encountered this before - should there be a different setting here?

I'm not sure about Eric214's suggestion, but it sounds like it could help. Regarding the static IP, if you set it on the router, the phone should pick it up automatically without you needing to enter it manually. After you set the static IP on the router, does the phone still hang on Acquiring IP? If you HAD to manually enter, you could plug in the DNS address coming straight from your router, or Google's open-dns of 8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 (I think that still works.)

That sounds exactly right to me, and you're right that it shouldn't be that difficult. I've heard others report of miscellaneous routers that don't play nice with our phone. In this case, it's an AP, but that might still be the issue. I haven't personally experienced the problem, so hopefully someone else can chime in who has.

Does anybody else have any ideas here?
I have also posted on Netgear and Verizon's forums, but am not expecting too much from either of these. I'm putting my money on the expertise here at XDA!
WMM is listed under the advanced settings of your router, it's not phone based but in your router. Disable it and return your other settings to normal and it should fix your problem.

I'll have another look in the morning but earlier today I looked through every page of settings and didn't see anything that looked or sounded like this.
What section or function might you expect it to be found? What else might it be called?

Advanced settings in your router.
Basically, the 802.11n spec requires devices to support 802.11e (Quality of Service [QoS] enhancements for wireless LAN) in order to use HT (High Throughput) link rates, i.e. higher than 54 Mbps. (WMM is a subset of 802.11e that was created by the Wi-Fi Alliance as a stop-gap measure while 802.11e made its way slowly through the IEEE review process.)
The point is this is an issue for the GS4 as it's either firmware related or a Samsung issue they didn't realize they caused. Point being, if you have constant disconnects to your router, disabling WMM should make your connection "stick". At this point its what you may have to do until a firmware update for the router is released or Samsung releases an OTA update fix. Unless you're rolling 3+ devices at the same time streaming content you shouldn't have an issue running 54mbps. I stream full HD content to 2 devices at the same time with no lags or decompression issues at 54mbps.
As long as your phone has a static IP from the router there is no reason to set the DNS on the S4...the router does all the DNS routing for your devices. Hopefully that'll fix your DNS error issue.

OK - had another look at the Router settings, and found the WMM option in the QoS section. I somehow overlooked that yesterday. I'll try this out later today when I'm at home.
Eric214 - with respect to this WMM setting, I have a Panasonic SmartTV, and stream Netflix, Amazon Video, Vudu, etc. and can get the highest quality (1080p) through these. Is changing this setting going to impair throughput for this purpose?
chrishoyt2012 - after changing to Static IP, if I did nothing on the phone (that is, kept it at DHCP), it didn't fix the problem. I then selected Static IP on the phone, which necessitated inputting DNS. There were DNS server entries there by default, and these didn't work, so I manually changed them to my ISP's DNS that are used on my Desktop.
What should I be doing in this regard, other than what I have tried above?

Well, I disabled WMM Support, but nothing changed. It still failed to get an IP Address, same as I described in my original post.
No replies in the other forums either.
I'd really like to get this going - I'm also considering getting the S4, but this may cause some second thoughts...
I went into the Netgear Adapter's setup program, but couldn't fix the problem there either.
I tried different Channels, and a few other settings changes, but no joy.
There was a WMM setting there, but it was checked, and greyed out, so I couldn't try unchecking it even if I wanted to. I disabled WMM on the Router again, but this option remained unavailable on the Adapter's setup program.
I went into my Router, and deleted the IP address for the S4, to try and 'reset' it, but still no change. The S4 shows 'failed to acquire IP' every time.
Any other ideas?? I also tried my daughter's Razr HD, and it connected fine, just like the others. What is so different about the S4's WiFi connectivity??
