First custom firmware on this phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there. Im going to try the litening Rom tonight. But Im worried about exactly what kind of data loss i will experience. Apps? Contacts? Etc.
Also. Can i just follow the tutorial on the custom Rom thread. Or do i need to root before hand. Or will odin do everything.
Many thanks for any answers
Jb

ODIN will do everything. The rom, the apps, the root, everything.
You will lose your apps, unless you back them up with something like Titanium Backup from the market, you can always download them again though. But that will make you lose your settings.
Contacts are stored on your google account, http://contacts.google.com, you can manage them at the site by the way.
Once you installed your new rom, you can login using your gmail and your contacts will be restored.

I didn't think titanium worked on unrooted devices?
thanks for your reply. What about stock Rom?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Follow the instructions to root your device if you want Titanium pro to backup apps .
Follow instructions on the individual custom rom page to install a rom .
If instructions say use Odin use Odin if they say use CWM use that dot make your own rules up .Dont start until you know what you are going to do and in what order .

Thank you for your help

Can not any one make rom for stock as we buy it?
making a rom is a tedious process, i sugget u use kdz update or just forget it
If you read the post I linked, you'll see that you can download the stock rom. Then just look for the flashing original rom thread in Developers area. Can't search it now since I'm on phone.

But hav to flash using kdz firmware updater and i want to flash it like we flash custom rom

This cannot be done via recovery. Because after booting root will be there. And so will superuser app.
Only way via recovery is to restore Nand of your official rom and then unroot it. Ask anybody to give you a Nand backup of official rom if you didn't make it. Now this wouldn't be hasslefree for others to give you a Nand backup because it contains their private info also like contacts, messages also. So best way is via kdz. But you can keep asking for a Nand backup.
Another is hidden in first reply post I gave you.
1. Void + sapps = official rom
2. Now unroot it via the application you rooted your phone. In my case it was z4root.
3. After unrooting uninstall the root application.
4. Now your phone has official rom.
You can include a few other bloatware before unrooting to match perfectly.
You may copy via root explorer. Copy to system/apps and set permissions as rw, r,r.
This is an innovative way. So I told you three ways.
1. Kdz
2. Nand restore of official rom
3. The above mentioned innovative way.

it is not possible...you will surely brick your device or you may end up with a fastboot scenario be careful before trying anything.oh and by the way KDZ is way too dangerous if any thing goes wrong you will surely have a beautiful brick on your desk.
nand back-up before custom recovery
Slight OT question here.... Is it possible to make a nand back-up before installing custom recovery? If it is possible, please post instructions or the link to the instructions here
Thanks

is there a way to remove bell bloatware without installed cyanogen??

i'm waiting for the ICS release so don't really want to install anything. is there a way i could just remove carrier bloatware? it's an unlocked bell phone, i'm using on Telus
Instal a cf-root from chainfires thread, then install titanium backup. You can then uninstall or freeze the apps.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
What the poster before me said should work, but keep in mind that freezing/uninstalling system apps COULD lead into problems.

Look in the themes and spps section and there is a list of whats safe n whays not to remove from a stock rom its a stickie i think

Cheers People
Download Siyah 3.5.2.
http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/07/29/siyahkernel-s2-v3-5/
Tar for Odin.
Then use this guide.
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s2-i9100-root-android-4-0-3-ics-xwlpd-88120/
Nevermind it says Cf-root. I flashed my Siyah kernel that way.
After that, flash any rom you want in recovery. Just do a Nandroid backup in recovery and backup apps with Titanium backup from Market!!!

Don't restore apps after flashing newer ROM, cause your phone will bootloop.
Better create text file and write names of installed apps.
Im not sure why everyone is worried about backing up there apps ive flashed about a 100 roms and never had to back them up cause if u go to the play store under my apps there always there
Infact there are apps there id forgotten about just pick which ones u want and re install .some roms auto instal them for u .make sure you have a google acc obviously!

What type of data? Music and photos are saved to the external SD card for me, and as for game save data, I believe that is externally backed up as well.

Only if the application is on the external memory card then it's backed up there. Otherwise they'll loose the data if that's not the case.

If you restore from google play, you loose all your app settings and you will have to reconfigure each app.
Also, Google Play will not show apps installed offline (apk)
Restoring app data with third party app like titanium backup is safe if app is compatible with the target rom

CWM-and have you bothered reading a Rom thread as there's normally install instructions.
And when I get bored of a rom I just restore my nand backup of something previous.

in order to install a perticular custom rom , all u have to do is to follow the install instruction's of the same in there OP. and the same applies to all other roms also.
since installation instruction do vary from one custom rom to another
Jasper, you are better to read up on things so you are familiar with the processes of like rooting/kernels/roms/cwm/Odin/troubleshooting.
I understand reading 1000s of posts is tedious, but you could end up with a non working phone.

This.
Also, you should make a backup of your EFS, just in case. It contains very valuable information of your device such as IMEI and other stuff, and it's not recoverable without a proper Backup or Sammy's help in the rare event that it gets screwed. Look for a piece of software called EFS PRO on this forum. I'd like to give you the proper url, but I'm kind of busy in a crappy PC at work.
And make sure you use a i9300 compatible ROM, just wanted to make it clear because I've seen people with variants (like US) trying to flash a i9300 ROM and get it pretty messy.
Stock ROMs are fairly easy for starters.
Good luck!.-
PS: When using ODIN make sure that you don't have Re-Partition selected. I repeat, it must be NOT CHECKED. Or you'll be DOOMED.-
Hi
Why don’t you try with Omega first.
There's a flashing guide in post #4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663656
Personal I prefer AOSP ROMs with MIUI.
Good luck
Edit: just make sure you do a nandroid backup. Always good to have a backup to go back to if things don't go as hoped. Have saved me many times.

Does anyone have solutions for "error restore / data" when restore by CWM?
I notice that my backup is quite big. Its more than 3 Gb.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Your backup could be damaged. I had this problem once with my Galaxy S, so I couldn't use my backup and had to install all apps manually...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
OK, this has been said a few times, titanium backup is only good to use on the same base rom... Going from ICS to JB rom means there are going to be lots of FC's and other problems... Its like installing a mac os on a windows PC... Not gonna work.... You are trying to force JB to use ICS file structure and it doesn't like it...

Have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
In the first post, there is a Quick Root Guide.
For you old firmware, the second (DooMLoRD's zergRush exploit) method might still work.
That is very easy and will not increase the flash counter.
Good luck.
P.S.: As your firmware is very old, you really should consider to flash a newer ROM. Maybe you should create a complete system backup in CWM recovery (=> nandroid backup) after rooting. Then flash a new ROM. And if it does not work or you don't like it, you can restore the backup again to go back to your current system.
As soon as you are rooted, you can use Mobile Odin app to flash other stock firmware versions and/or custom kernels without increasing the flash counter.
Does this erase any memory in my mobile?
Sent from my GT-I9100G using xda app-developers app
Rooting wont erase anything, but flashing a new firmware/rom will. Won't erase your pictures, music etc but will delete your apps, contacts and messages. You can always make a backup of your contacts and messages using apps like SMS backup+
Once your rooted, you can make a backup of your apps with titanium backup.
This is a very common doubt.Search the forums for more information.
