Wallpaper problem... - Nook Color Themes and Apps

Ok, I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this problem or if it's just something simple that I'm overlooking.
I use my Nook in landscape mode only (like a table should be used), but whenever I try applying a new wallpaper it doesn't fill the whole screen correctly. When I go to set it, you have to move that little yellow box and stretch it as far as you can, but I can never stretch it to the full picture since I'm guessing it assumes this is for portrait mode. So whenever I apply a wallpaper, it looks as it's been zoomed in and it looks like crap.
I see plenty of screenshots on here with peoples wallpaper being displayed correctly, so what am I doing wrong?
Nook Color running CM7 stable.
Thanks in advance.

Try QuickPic from the market or Wallpaper Set and Save, they allow for more adjustment and better resolution and scaling the the stock Gallery app. QuickPic also is a vast improvement over the Gallery in many ways.. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give those a try when I get home.
Btw, I just checked out your photos from the link on your signature and they're amazing. What kind of camera do you use?

Use Multipicture LIVE wallpaper.
Also use 1024x600 resolution.
Wallbase.cc is a good site.

[Q] Why does Vibrant display degrade external photos loaded and zoomed?

Vibrant display is impressive EXCEPT when I zoom in on photos (taken with a Canon G10) uploaded to phone, and viewed in the stock gallery. There seems to be some degradation in the photo quality when I zoom in or try to use as wallpaper. I notice this on 5mp+ photos. Detail gets very fuzzy on Vibrant screen. Can anyone explain this to me?
It has something to do with the compression they used.. There's a thread about this in the galaxy s forums, look it up.... for wallpaper I use flikie from the market.. I don't use it to download wallpapers, just to set the ones I want from the gallery.. works great...
It's the Gallery Application that was made by Cooliris. You can search the Nexus One forums, they have plenty info on this.

I was a little confused when trying to use a nice photograph as a wallpaper as well until I realized that when I go to set wallpaper, the box you use to select the region of the image to use for the wallpaper is actually resizable. Just drag the corner of that box to make it larger, and the image won't be blurry.
I don't think that this is a problem with the screen or any of the phone hardware, but rather Samsung's software scaling of images.

I am aware that you can adjust the crop for wallpapers... so I guess my issue is more with zooming in on a photo to see more detail and it becoming very blurry.
Thanks for the insight and additional research ideas. I will try flikie as well
************
Update:
Oddly, when I use flikie to set wallpaper it gives message that the wallpaper is set, but its the default twiz "grass blades", not my photo. Annoying. Also no option to choose crop size.
Hope there's better gallery included in updates.

Why can't wallpapers work !!!

I am getting very frustrated with the NC and Wallpapers. No matter what I try I can not get photos to display correctly on the home screen. I have tried many different options and no matter what I try the only thing that works is when I reset the device to factory defaults and not root it. I have tried Zeam and I have tried Launcher Pro ... I have tried everything that people have sugested to try and still the result is a zoomed in picture that is formated incorectly on my home screen.
Is there any solution to this ?? I have tried setting the wallpeper in both portrait and landscape mode and get the same result. I have also tried Wallpaper set and save to no avail. I can't believe this is happening to everyone and there is no solution for it.
Please help !!
My NC is currently Fully rooted with full adm and shell support. I can install apk's just fine and widgets. I have Zeam and Launcher Pro installed. This all started when I installed a laucher, so I know it is a problem with launchers but you need a launcher on the NC to do anything good :O )
THanks!
Not the simplest way, but I have found that if I convert the image I want for a wallpaper to .png and put it in the "my files/pictures" directory, it lets you set the image as a "wallpaper" like the other default wallpapers. you will want to resize the image - maybe 1280x1024. Some of the other default wallpapers have an image size of 840x1024.
The nook appears to NOT resize / zoom in on the .png files the way it does on .jpgs.

Have you folks tried dropping the files into the device memory/wallpaper file?
Mine seem to work fine if I drop the there, but if I try to make a photo into a wallpaper, the zooming games being.

Just apply your wallpapers to the nook home screen in landscape position. Sometimes you have to [email protected] the first pic then it gives you a landscape version. This will apply the wp across the other launchers as well. It does with zeam anyway.

nvm didnt work, looks like it has something to do with the original size of the wallpaper you are looking to apply.

For some reason, the conventional set wallpaper option is buggy. I uninstalled Launcher Pro as this seemed to create more issues, and now use Zeam.
Here is the method I have found to work:
Open up gallery to view your wallpapers/pictures
Select a picture/wallpaper
Turn the Nook to landscape and tap the picture until wallpaper options appear on the bottom. Select the wallpaper icon
Touch and drag a corner to expand the rectangle to the entire frame
Turn the nook to verticle position (normal)
Save
Discard (picture may show again)
Exit out to your home. It should look normal.
I've been using the MultiPicture Live Wallpaper app. It's a little buggy (at least for me), but it will use a full picture as a wallpaper.
You'll need to have Live Wallpapers enabled to use it.
i'm having the same problem, it all got started after i installed adw launcher. after uninstalling i can't get it back to normal. the wallpaper is zooomed in and i don't really know how to fix it

You're welcome. The key here is when you drag the corner to select the part of the picture. If you can't select the entire frame, it thinks you are cropping, and blows everything up. This is the only way I found where you can select the entire frame.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but in most launchers, there is an option to scroll (or not) the wallpaper. De-select that option and the wallpaper won't move when you scroll across screens. For instance, in Zeam, it is under preferences>workspace>scroll wallpaper
No wallpaper or "continue read" button issues here.
I've used photos, stock NC backgrounds, etc. Seems fine to me.
Continue read works great as well.
FWIW: Rooted with Nooter, using ZEAM launcher and Softkeys 2.0
I've had success the last few days using Dolphin HD to download my wallpapers from Google Images... Looks great!
For ADW (and possible any other launcher with multiple screens) i find that using a 1200x1024 png image placed in the my files\wallpaper directory then applied using the Nook default selector and using the image from the "Wallpaper" tab and not the "Photo Gallery" tab works best.
There is no stretching or pixelation, and the image fills all five screens of ADW.
Respect to all you out there who know what you're doing (I sure don't), but the "fixes" in this particular thread seem to be band-aids to the actual problem. I'm computer savvy enough to believe that launcher pro did something to the coding as far as screen size. I've noticed that when I use the B&N Home launcher, the screen scrolls further left and right than it did previously (before installing launcher pro). Also, when using stock backgrounds, there are black bars on both sides of the home screen (left when scrolled left, and right when scrolled right).
Does anyone know how this can be actually fixed, without doing the "set wallpaper in landscape mode?" There's got to be some way to return the screen resolution/size back to the way it was before launcher pro changed whatever it changed.
I suppose factory reset/re-root is one option, but I was hoping there might be another way.

This method is the proper way to get wallpapers to display, see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883948. If you are cropping or turning your nook landscape to set wallpaper, you are not seeing the wallpaper at the correct resolution.
For those too lazy to click links, here is my fix from another thread. 100% perfect wallpapers on ADW's 5 screen setup.
To get an perfect wallpaper using 5 screens, like in ADW:
- Get an image that is at least 1200x1024
- Crop (dont scale) it to 1200x1024. A really easily way to do this is open the file in Photoshop, copy the entire image, then create a new file that's exactly 1200x1024. Then just paste the image and use the arrow to drag it around to whatever looks best to you.
- Save the file as a .png
- Get it on to your nook. (SD card transfer, email and download, whatever)
- Open Wallpaper Set & Save
- Point it towards the folder you have your wallpapers in
- Select the wallpaper you want
- Hit apply
Bam. Perfect wallpaper, no stretching, no compression. Looks great! I'll post screens later today if I remember
I used a 1920x1200 wallpaper I had on my PC, cropped it, emailed it to myself, then used Set & Save to place my wallpaper. It's really crisp.

[Q] Proper wallpaper size?

I really don't think what else to do with this issue - I'm on CM7 and I'm not able to set a crisp wallpaper, everything's blurry or pixelated. I've tried several methods from landscape to portrait, setting it with the gallery, but it always wants me to crop. The sizes I've tried:
1024x750
750x1024
600x1024
1024x600
1200x1024
1280x1024
1800x1024
NONE of those are working, they all seem zoomed Is any1 able to help? Can't be THAT hard to set a crisp wallpaper on that stunning screen, can it?
Use wallpaper set and save from the market
QuickPic works as well
1200x1024 and I've moved from Wallpaper Set & Save to QuickPic, both are free in the market, but QuickPic just seems to work smoother for me.
(edit: You beat me to it JINP!)

Just a guess... you are using ZEAM LAUNCHER right?
I'm having a similar problem. I CAN get wallpapers to load crisply and clearly by controlling the size of the image. A too large image will result in a small, blurry part of the image being all that's visible as wallpaper. I CAN'T get my rooted NC to show ALL of a wallpaper image that's specifically sized to take full advantage of the "panorama" you get by scrolling among the screens. I use LauncherPro and have five home screens. I used to run Nookie Froyo and had access to the original B&N Nook tools and settings. Using them I could load a wide screen wallpaper and see the whole thing. I switched to xe.nook.color.froyo (a great ROM, btw) and lost access to those tools. I've tried Wallpaper Set & Save and it works fine to locate and load wallpaper images but won't show the full length of the wallpapers I select once they're loaded. 1800 x 1024 images used to load and display completely. Now both ends are cut off no matter what program I use to load them.

Download ES File Explorer, browse to your wallpaper folder and open the image you want to set as a wallpaper with ES Image Viewer, long touch and select apply as wallpaper. This is the only Way I've found to show wallpapers properly, you just have to make sure the image is 1200x1024.
My guess as to the reason is that nothing tries to apply the background at the proper size, they might be applying it at 960x800 or so on, which causes the image to get stretched and pixelated.

Agreed except the original wallpaper size didnt seem to matter. Im using all the same wallpapers I use for my PC with a screen res of 1920 x 1080. ES seems to do just fine with them keeping things looking great.
EDIT: Using the correct aspect ratio did make a noticeable improvement.

Is there any good nexus 10 wallpapers

I have tried downloading apps and getting pictures off the internet that are at 2560x1600 but they are all blurry. The only good ones are the default ones built-in. Is there any place to go to get wallpapers that are not blurry?

Dont listen to the above, you'll always have cropping issues and it'll look horrible if you use 2560x1600 because Android wallpapers scroll and are meant to look good in both landscape and portrait. Ideally, you should use images that are exactly 3966x2560. There aren't a lot of those out there, however. What I've been doing until more become available is Google's image search, using the Search Tools option to limit the results to images exactly or larger than 12MP (4096x3072). Scaling an image down will look much better than scaling up, and using anything below 3966x2560 will do just that.
Edit: Sorry, I skimmed the other replies before writing this. technician42's suggestion for the Pattrn app is actually a really good one. The others though... as I said, anything less than 3966x2560 will give you a bad time.

Not 100% true.
So don't disregard the links above as they're perfectly useful and I have many wallpapers that are 2560x1600 that aren't cropped on my N10. Use an app called Simple Image Wallpaper Free in conjunction with wallpapers from the above links, or with any other 2560x1600 images you find. The app is actually a "live wallpaper" but there is nothing live about it. From within the settings check "fill screen" and the app will make sure there is no cropping of the image. If you are so inclined you may also choose different images for landscape and portrait. One thing to note, your wallpaper will not scroll if you use this. Enjoy.

The problem with this approach is, unless the wallpaper doesn't rotate with the tablet, it would look horrible in portrait mode (or Landscape if you used a 1600x2560 image). You cant fill 2560 of height with 1600 without ugly stretching.

I see what you're saying, but the wallpaper doesn't rotate with the screen, so it doesn't stretch. One downside is that some of what you see in landscape mode won't be seen in portrait, but I rarely use my tablet in portrait anyway.
Simple image wallpaper pro lets you choose a different wallpaper for portrait. I can't stand the scrolling wallpaper. First thing i turn off, and its MUCH easier finding good wallpapers. 2560 x 1600 is the right resolution for a non scrolling, one screen wallpaper. Looks great. Oh, just discovered yesterday that recent nova launcher update will let you crop and set non scrolling wallpapers. Woot!

The official AOKP from Steve Spear has this feature built into his ROM.
The easiest way to find wallpaper that you don't have to crop is Google images and use the Exact Size feature (priceless feature btw)
Search for whatever ("wallpaper" being a good start)
Search Tools
Drop down that says "Any Size"
Choose "Exactly"
Enter in the HxW you want in pixels..
I use screen captures from Minecraft. You can get some pretty cinematic effects in Minecraft using optifine. I have some nice pictures that have been featured on my homescreen. For example, a cave system or setting sun.

Forced zoom on wallpaper on homescreen

Hi all,
Is this new to Samsung? I had the Note 4 previously but it didn't have this issue where by when you set the wallpaper for both the lock screen and homescreen, the crop on the lock screen is exactly the dimension you have set but on the homescreen it is zoomed in.

This is because the S6 detects small up and down motions when using the phone and moves the home screen wallpaper up and down to make it look like your view is changing. Fun little gimmick. Not sure what its effect is on battery life, but I've found no way to turn it off. But it does mean it has to crop the home wallpaper.

I've seen on here that some people's accelerators have malfunctioned. Does your screen rotate properly when it's supposed to? If not, it may be an accelerator issue.

Hmm that's weird, I tested my phone apps and the accelerators are fine. Apps switched orientation as they are supposed to and snappy, but I still don't see any tilting of the wallpaper according to how I tilt the phone.

Interesting. I wonder if it's carrier-specific. I have Verizon, not sure if other carriers disabled this feature.
Glad your accelerometers work though! :good:
is there a solution to add wallpapers to the S6 without having them zoomed in??? this is really annoying!
I asked this once too, nobody even glanced on my post or tried to help, so I found the solution by myself, just get the app dodol wallpaper maker and try setting a wallpaper using that app, it doesnt crop or zoom anything, the way u set it is they way it will be set on the homescreen, believe me, I notice every little thing on my wallpapers, so naturally, I immediately saw that crop issue, I think it was after the latest big update. Anyway, just try the app.

Hmm thanks for the tip. But I am not satisfied with this. The app just sets an image as live wallpaper. So there is no zoom, but having a service in background that uses 80 MB ram just for a wallpaper is not nice...
But it seems there is no other solution.
You dont need the app to keep the wallpaper, the app itself creates a wallpaper in your Gallery, I think it is in an album under the name Crop, then u just set that wallpaper the normal way, it will not have a zoom, I've tried and it works, you only need that app for the wallpaper crop, it's good that the app saves the wallpapers so that you don't have to use it, try it and tell me if it works.

I think we are talking about two different things. My wallpapers are already cropped to the resolution of the display. But when I set them as wallpaper, they are a little zoomed in. If I take the image from the "crop" dodol folder, and set as wallpaper, it will also have a little zoom...
When I set the same image to lock screen and home screen and unlock my phone, I always see the the home screen image is a little bigger - you dont have this problem???
btw, I am using nova launcher.

I believe it's the same problem, I would put a wallpaper using TouchWiz, and a high quality image (after being cropped and looking good on the preview window) would become pixelated thus I imagine it was being zoomed in, otherwise without zoom I wouldn't be seeing those dots in the middle of my wallpaper, after using dodol to crop the picture and set that one again using TouchWiz there was no deterioration in my wallpaper. I don't think that the picture was the problem, every other picture had the same thing, It's like I lost quality in my pictures, and I intentionally get high quality images to have everything look crisp. I looked over at the webpage you posted, they are talking about the Parallax effect, but for me it made no difference if it was on or off. Maybe not all phones have the same fix, or as you said we may not have the same problem after all, one thing is for sure, Samsung while fixing one thing sometimes breaks another.
