I know the 3D is software controlled and only works in some areas. Can there possibly be development to be able to control what is in 3D and what isn't? Or perhaps some sort of toggle? For example can we develop a 3D home launcher or is it just not physically possible? Or can we ever find a way to turn off the 3D content?
i don't see any reason why not, since its software controlled we should have complete access to it. I'm sure you could make a completely 3d launcher but i for see dozens of people saying it would be a bad idea and they wouldn't use it. (I'm not one of them lol)

Well that's why it would be cool if we can somehow build a 3D toggle. I imagine there may be times that I would not want to view 3D content.

Has it been confirmed that 3D viewing is possible in portrait mode? I finally saw the Nintendo 3DS, which was much better than I expected, and the 3D definitely only works in one orientation. I suspect the EVO 3D will be the same. If that is the case it wouldn't make much sense to have a launcher that only works in 3D when in portrait mode unless it could be written to switch 3D on and off based on orientation; that might be asking a bit much for a launcher.

Control what is in 3d and what isn't? Find a way to turn off 3d content? Sorry, not trying to sound mean or anything but this makes absolutely no sense at all. If you don't want to use 3d content then don't, its not like 3d is mandatory. Its like the kickstand the evo 4g, its there for you to use or not, there isn't a requirement to use it. If you don't want to look at a 3d movie then don't play one on the phone just play the regular 2d version. If you don't want 3d pics then don't take 3d pics. I am sure there will be 3d bloatware, and if thats the case simply don't use that particular app or root it and remove it all together.

I actually think the opposite of the 3DS. You have to stay absolutely still and at a perfect angle in order to view the 3D. Even then it is hard to focus on. I am imaging the EVO 3D will be better. I am guessing the reason 3D only works in landscape is because of the screen hardware? I think it would be very convenient for us to be able to turn off 3D in order for a more crisp and clear image. I found it almost impossible to read text on the Nintendo 3DS screen.
I'm not so sure it will only work in landscape. I've seen reports that say otherwise

Pretty much everyone on every forum/blog that hasn't actually seen or held one in real life says its landscape only lol. how do you know for sure?
I really wish someone somewhere would definitively say (and back it up with hard evidence) whether it works in portrait or not. I saw a thread where someone said they had played with it themselves and that it definitely did 3D in portrait, but then later they recanted and said they weren't certain anymore. I've seen posts where people reference "you tube videos" (without links or more specifics) that prove it does portrait 3D. Almost every post I see that says it doesn't support portrait appears to be speculation based on the fact that no other hardware does both yet. I can't wait for the thing to be released simply so I can finally find out for myself. lol
Oh, and I think the existing hardware 2D/3D switch would be a great way to control whether content was displayed in 2D or 3D. Hopefully some devs can mod that up in a custom 3D ROM eventually.

I agree, that would be awesome. We have seen some "impossible" things be developed onto the EVO so I am sure they can figure out something. Remember HTC saying the evo wouldn't work past 30 fps because of the hdmi. Well yeah the devs got it to work.

Ok new thread. Postive feedback posts about the evo3d. While I was at mall with the wife I stopped at the iphone store to check out the iphone 4 and compared it to my evo3d needless to say it was no comparison at all. I had the apple rep in awe even when I was on mobile I totally smashed the iPhone in ever aspect. When I went on wifi the rep put his little I can't do anything phone away and asked to check out mine. Of course Im like no. No one touches the evo3d but me. I did go on to show him I was over clocked and that the 3d was an added bonus even though I used it all but like 4 times. Also showed him the evo3d has flash. He was shocked. I think he might be headed towards a sprint store lol. Just wanted to share. Also the screen size is way smaller than what I thought. On tv it always looked bigger, but its so tiny compared to my superior phone. And I see my thread got removed "bummer" but a it was fun while it lasted. Thanks to all who posted postive feedback about the evo3d. Gotta love xda.

I'm liking this phone. Gotten a bit more out of it with the "perm-temp" root. Wont be perfect until I can flash stuff (will also make theming a hell of a lot easier for myself).
How did the quality of the EVO's 3d screen compare to the iPhone. Not talking about size. Would like to know if it makes our screen look dated or if the EVO had it's own.

Me to. I just keep checking for that magical day when I log on and see its a go for sure. Also looking forward to your themes man. And I did the permatemp root and it made this phone superior to ever other phone I had. I also left the house for church at 10:am running oc @ 1.8. After church hit the mall with the wife and wished I was somewhere else but I checked out my Facebook, checked email, sent a few, sent a over a 100 text easily, stopped at the iPhone store, talked to my family for about 20/25 min made a few more calls,and took about 11 or 12 photos and when I got home which is when I posted this thread my battery was still at 52%. To me that's great battery life to be oc @ 1.8

My bad thought I should have mentioned that. Man the evo3d held up great. On some photos on the iphone looked better at first. And some looked better on the 3d. But then we blu toothed the exact pics to the opposite phone and the results were the same IMO. The iPhone screen was nice but its no qhd. The rep was even shocked at the 3d picture quality. Only thing I had to adjust was the brightness on the 3d because under that store light which I think is fluorescent I was seeing myself in the pics. On websites the 3d out performed it hands down I can say. On the iPhone websites look small for one and blurry. I cleaned my glasses off and the both phone screens and same thing the rep told me after you have the phone for a while it looks normal. My reply was mine wins.

Come to think of it your absolutely right. I haven't seen a evo3d commercial in a while. I wonder why?? I agree is awsome. And I thought I read someone was able to get ad free working?? I could be wrong though. And themes would be oh so an lovely bonus. Id love to have Hc3d,Darkhorse and Black funk off top. And I wish I knew how how to make the stock msg app have a black background. That would be smooth to me.

I haven't seen a single Sensation commerical but have seenan HTC EVO 3D commercial pretty much everyday (and I don't watch any TV other than Netflix). I went to Sonny's yesterday (was great btw) and they had 4 TVs all showing the same channel and guess what I noticed when I glanced over? An Htc EVO 3D commercial .
P.S. I'm in Florida, Sprint heavily advertises everywhere. Last Sunday I saw a movie and the previews showed the 3D commercial.

Yea sprint does advertise in florida heavily...everytime i go to my local movie theater...sprint advises me politly to turn my phone to silent mode...but in my head i was like yea biotches sprint the shiznit! Lol jk

We have carmike cinema's in Wisconsin a yeah almost all sprint I think they have a few for Verizon when Verizon had the "pirates quest" app or w.e

All the theaters in CA have sprint commercials. On TV ive seen sensation ads everyday but only once for 3vo. Last movies I saw in the theater were in may so no 3vo commercials. September cant come quick enough HTC! Team win please please please get it done sooner

I've had the 3D since launch and I finally got a copy of this movie on my phone. Bricks were shat. Mind you I have several other 3D movies on my phone but watching this thing is unbelievable. Every 3D owner should have a copy of this on their phone. My girl, whos "meh" to every 3D pic or video I showed, dropped her jaw when I showed her. Took me a while to get a copy and even longer to find an english audio track to mux over it, and longer still to render to mp4 format but damn it was worth every second.

Its out there....you just have to type a few words to find it.
I just "found" Jackass 3D the other day, and it's pretty badass. I have Avatar 3D and The Final Destination 3D as well.
Plenty of info on here to help you find 3D vids. Avatar is somewhat of a different beast though because the file is so large.
I still need to convert mine.
I understand that people want these movies, but ffs read the rules. If you want it, either find it on your own or go buy the blu-ray and rip it to 3D yourself.
There are quite a few locked threads because they discuss where to find illegal copies of movies.

Maybe threads like this shouldn't be created then. You can't create a thread about how amazing avatar is in 3d and not expect a few people to ask how they can get it.

I own nine 3D movies. I've converted them over to phone. Used DVDFab and Handbrake. Avatar and Tron Legacy are the best looking so far.

You're absolutely right... and that's why I didn't make the thread.
I think the version I "found" was only about a gig and a half in size. It is most definitely the best 3D movie ive seen on the phone though.
Didnt mean to start anything. Just doing to say anyone enterprising enough to get it onto their device, it is well worth the trouble. Delete thread if necessary.
Tron was pretty cool. Nice 3D effect and very tastefully done. But nothin on Avatar.

Hey guys I guess I'm confused. I haven't bought no real 3d movies for my tv yet even tho I have a 3d tv but of course i have a few blu rays with the plastic red and blue glasses like jackass and final destination. I can convert those to my phone to use the 3D? And if so Luke the Jackass 3D would I convert the plain blu ray or the DVD disc which is the 3D option with plastic glasses

Agreed, Avatar looks amazing on this phone. Animated 3D films also look great. How to train your dragon and Cloudy with a chance of meatballs are the ones I have tried and love the outcome (and they encode to be much smaller).

So I've been selling Evo3ds at my job now for awhile, and when someone asked me anything about the 3D I said it was a joke but the phone was worth it's weight in gold from the hardware inside. Then last week I downloaded this youtube video in 720p and watched it on my phone. Normally I don't post and leach all day but if anyone wants to see what a video should look like on a 3d screen, give this one a shot.

3d pics look great. Sometimes u have to adjust them urself. I def dont think its a gimmick. U shouldve spent time learning first hand about 3d instead of saying it was worthless. It took me a week before my eyes got where it was easy to focus on the 3d pics. Now i find myself actually looking through my albums more.

Personally I think It's a gimmick. I have used it, I've taken 3D pictures, and I know how to view the pictures properly (before someone says I need to try it more). I just don't really see a need for it.

Could consider it the same type useless technology. I dont understand why peoplw have a problem with extra services that they simply dont have to use.

I never said I had a problem with it. Just saying I don't use it. Bluetooth is standard on all phones now, so it can't be a gimmick, the 3D on the other hand is a gimmick because they tried to use it as a selling point where less than 10% of the users will use it. And yes I think siri is a gimmick along the same lines, less than 10% will actually use it.

Ha technology advances and has to start somewhere. Bluetooth wasnt standard on everyphone when it was invented. I bet only high dollar phones had it. Same as touch screen and HD, people are happy without them but most phones these days have both. So in a few years every phone might be 3d, so u will look dumb calling it a gimmick.

on vids and pics it's semi-useful (especially in places where depth is needed, like filming sports, action, taking pics of action, etc.) but i love it on games. you dont have to guess on how far away something is by its size. you actually can tell how far it is.

It's kind of a gimmick.. and I'm sure it hurt sales as people thought that everything on the phone was in 3D.
Personally I think it's nice for movies and gimmicky for your own content. But I bought the phone because of its specs anyway, so if I lost the 3D option I'd be ok.
It should have been marketed as an added feature but once it got incorporated into the official title of phone it became the main attraction (gimmicky). Doesn't mean it isn't a good phone but it put many off before it was even released. It should have been a "featured player" instead of a "reoccurring cast member".

Could of been designed a lil better in the asthetic department, the camera button poking out, the camera on the back is asking to be broken or scratched up, it sticks out decently far. I rock a otterbox defender tho so these problems are "covered up" literally...

When I bought my EVO 3D it was the best phone available at the time and the 3D functionality was just a bonus. I would not have bought it just for 3D.

Yeah, I have one friend who's presently phone shopping who won't consider the Evo3D because of the 3D feature. Basically she thinks it's goofy, just kind of rolled her eyes when the guy at the store described it. I told her everything else about the phone is awesome, but she couldn't get past the marketing, which focuses pretty much entirely on the 3D.

Before hand i would like to express my love and admiration for all devs and cooks
But given the phone in question the HTC EVO 3D dosnt it seem pointless releasing roms where things like 3d games dont work 3d camera dont work 3d pics dont work i mean that is why we bought the phone after all

Pointless no since ultimately it's the end user that decides whether or not they want to give up the 3D feature for a ROM. There are a couple ROMS that have functioning 3D but sadly to incorporate it into ROMS such as MIUI or CM is quite challenging.
Look at it this way, some people don't mind giving that feature up for something that is far more promising in the long run. Options are always welcomed with these devices.

I bought this phone because it had the best hw at the time of release! The 3D is a plus that I can do without. Especially for sweet CM goodness!

I got it for the hardware and shamefully the 3D. The WOW factor wore off pretty quick in my case.

I don't think it's pointless. The dev's and rom cookers give you the details on what's working and not working in their releases 99% of the time, and a lot of the android enthusiasts (most people on this board), have a reason or another to willingly sacrifice a thing or two. (WiMax for example, since here in AZ we don't have the network capabilities to utilize it.)
Those who are not willing get the choice to avoid it, or test it out and see if they're willing to use it until the author gets a chance to resolve the bugs / known issues. (Assuming they plan to fix it. Some outright state they have no intentions to.)
Well as long 3D movies and 3D recording doesn't work it will not be mine daily driver. But fact is that some off these roms that miss a few features off our phone are really good.
Rom I have now MikRunny 1.11 still has an bug with 3D games, but because there are almost no 3D games is the reason I don't mind that.
I'll kiss 3D goodbye for a cm rom any day. In fact, I only bought this phone for the great hardware. 3D is something I'd show friends, maybe take a bunch of pictures and that's it. It's more a "nice to have" feature than anything I'd really miss.
If I know I need the 3D feature (or MHL, which is more important to me and doesn't work on non-sense roms I've tried [GSM user]), I can still restore a Sense backup

This is kinda what i mean i dont overly use the feature but its a feature i would like to have at hand if the opportunity to use it arose
I think it will all change when the evo 3d gets the official ics update
I could care less about the 3D, honestly, its a novelty on the phone at best. When it came out, it had better specs than anything else Sprint was offering, and I was interested in "keeping it in the family" as I came from the EVO 4G.
Gimme a good room with battery life, camera, working 4g, and good sound, and you can burn 3D into the ground.

People who don't have it tend to say that its an gimmick yes. If you don't see it in real its hard to judge.
I also mainly judged on the hardware specifications as the choice for HTC was obvious.
But now I have I can say for sure its not an gimmick its an really usefull feature that is going change my life, because first I could only record in 2D and now I can record in 3D and that is just great, as for later then I can watch these memories back in 3D.
Although I don't have an 3D tv. One thing I know for sure, if I would buy an TV or Monitor and I can get on for not much with 3D then I for sure go for the 3D.
But now I put 3D movies on the Evo 3D and go lie in bed and watch an 3D movie, although it drains the battery, as yesterday after I had it charged 100% not long after that I went watching an 3D movie that was 120 mins long.
My battery drained at time 60% but its worth watching in 3D as its really an nice experience and I'm even more expressed by the 3D video's I can make myself.
I pratice Kung fu and yesterday I asked mine trainer if I could film him doing the first form and I looked it few times back and it looks so great.

For people that want it, but can't go without certain features, just need to get Boot Manager. Get it setup when your running your daily, so goes on phone ROM. Then slide over to other slots & setup ROM you want to try. All you do to flip between is open boot manager, slide to ROM you want to run & hit boot ROM. I usually won't buy apps, only use free ones, unless I WILL use it & really benefit from it like making easier. This was worth it!! Also good to just try out ROMS. See a ROM that looks good but not sure if you like it, & just end up restoring your ROM, or re flash your daily. This it's already setup, & if don't like new ROM just delete it from manage option.
