[Q] [Telus T959D Fascinate] N00B help required. - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi - looking for some help. I have a Telus T959D Fascinate it is rooted via superoneclick. I have a ton of apps installed along with 3 paid apps (Titanium BU, Swift X keyboard, and ADW Launcher).
I installed ROM manager with the intent to get CWD on - says it successful but when I go into recovery its stock recovery.
Q1. I noticed it created an update.zip in root - do I need to flash that with stock recovery first?
Q2. Will putting on CWD in this manner cause my apps to get lost?
Q3. is there any step by step tips to root your phone, correct any lags (see a lot on voodoo but its a few months old) and ready it for custom roms?
Any tips and how to's would be greatly appreciated - especially to safe house my system as is.
Also, I noticed ROM manager and Titanium store things on the SD - I'm assuming I need to copy those files to a computer or external SD on my phone or I would lose any backups or recovery ROMs when I flash (is that correct).
Again, thanks for any help, and love this forum!

Hey man, what is it that your trying to do exactly?

Firstly, thanks for the reply. Essentially, I'm already rooted - done. Its the next steps that are tripping me up.
I would like to have my current applications backed up with some advice on where to put them using Titanium. I would like to have CWM recovery installed so I can get an image of my ROM as well as set me up to try others (CM7, MIUI, etc.)
Lastly, realizing now that the Telus Fascinate is a different beast - not the verizon model, more like a Vibrant.
Then, any recommendations from Telus F users on what can make the phone better - voodoo, lagfixes and what have you.
I do like my phone, I love the customization of Android (I jumped ship from iPhone), love that its Linux based, but still feeling my way around

Ah got ROOT !! now what?

ok I successfully rooted an optimus V phone with superoneclick and adb shell. And how nice was it to see "Running a SU test.......Success !" so of course I went ahead and downloaded superuser and titanium backup as per the tutorial I used. everything checks out. so what's next??? getting Root without doing something nifty is pretty worthless. so... I think I am going to go with an optimized stock rom as suggested to limit headaches for now.
Some tutorials suggest backing things up. Some talk again activating the storage feature and start adding rom's to the sd card. etc... all I know that titanium backup doesn't care much for the stock rom as it is. By the way do I need to worry about changing the kernel?
I am planning on going with Harmonia for this optimus V, if that helps, for a rom.
Always open to advice on what you'd recommend and why. thanks folks !!

Wait...you rooted without knowing what you were planning to do after you rooted?
First, you'll want to boot into recovery and do a nandroid backup (just in case you ever needed to go back to stock for warranty reasons). Then pick a ROM. My ROM of choice is is [ROM][WIP][ALPHA] aospCMod | AOSP 2.3.3 / CM7 (Gingerbread). Download the gapps file and put on root of SD card. For this ROM, go to Twitter and search aospluniX. WARNING...make sure you download the OV files, NOT the HC files. Once the 2 OV files are downloaded put on root of SD card. Boot into recovery mode, wipe data/cache, wipe Dalvik cache. At main menu, go to Flash .zip from SD card. Flash the OV ROM file. When that finishes flash the gapps file. Reboot, then behold the glory that is AOSP!
EDIT: almost forgot, flashing a kernel is up to you. Just place on root of SD card and flash. You can do this at any time. AOSP's ROM has a built in kernel, which is my preference. Seems to run really smooth and fast for me.

[Q] Want to root my lovely XT910 Razr. overwhelming...

Hi guys. been a while since I rooted my legend..
After jumping from htc`s -> lg(crap) -> samsung`s to motorola razr I`ve decided to stay. I love this phone, been a while since I got this feeling. It seems the manufacturers are releasing new models every week now.
But I want to root my Razr so I can freeze some bloatware. Hate all that crap the manufacturers keep shoving down our throats.
But when reading page up and page down in these forums I get confused about all the abbrivations and terms. Could somebody point me where to look or explain a little?
I`ve visited the faq, wiki, android general and couldnt find any "low level" answers..
-root, will i be able to receive OTA (ICS when it arrives)
-bootloaders, safestrap, bootstrap etc.. what does these mean?
-what do i have to do to keep it safe and "toy around a little" without bricking it? cwm/titanium/nandroid backup, do i need all these? what is the way to go, can i do a complete backup with all apps and settings even in widgets?
sorry for all the questions, but the search functions and threads are quite overwhelming..
and thumbs up for all devs and people that make XDA so great.. i am happy to donate via paypal to these people! keep up the good work..
(if i posted this in the worng forum, i apologize in advance)

You should post un Q&A forum.
But i'll answer to you anyway.
so if you're still in 2.3.5 it's really easy to root just head to this thread:

Linux:::

1) Root wont break OTA (it will if you install custom ROM)
2) With this root method you have BOOTSTRAP, wich install custom recovery(cwm) i dont really know the difference between this and safestrap, i used only bootstrap.
3) The better way (in my opinion) is to use this root method, install bootstrap and reboot to recovery and do a backup. After this you can play around with titanium backup freeze bloatware etc...
Have fun with your razr it's a master piece!
Thread moved to General Forums.
It is simple, If your Thread title can be written in form of a question, it does not belong to development section.
Have a nice day.
thanks for answer.
good about receiving OTA`s..
what is bootstrap exactly?
on the rooting you provided the link to, the OP mentions it is adviced to an adb pull/system?
also, is the backup stored on the SD or internal? should i make a "goldcard" or is that only for model specific phones?
thanks..

Boot strap is a way of running new firmwares, without actually installing it to the system folders/partitions. A little like running two OS:es on the same computer.
Pulling adb system is doing a backup of your system folder, since there are almost no .sbf files out, recovering can be difficult if you delete the wrong things.
(an .sbf is essentially a "recovery cd" for your phone.)
Safest way to do it, is simply:
Don't delete apps in system folder. Only use "freeze" in whatever root uninstaller you decide to use.
Yahoo and blur apps must not be altered, you can't make calls without them as it is now.
The most important tweak is IMO, killing Google maps, as it runs in the background.
A Goldcard is unnecessary on this phone, since it has the "app to sd" partition built in.
ed: No automatic backup is done, it's up to you. (I didn't do one and had to reinstall with a .sbf) >_<
thanks for the excellent explanation..
so bootstrap makes the system files avaiable and untouched as long as i dont delete them?
also killing google maps, then i would not have actual google maps or navigation on my phone? i use this application now and then..
Am I right in saying that once you have rooted and have CWM recovery that you could do a NANDroid backup as soon as you have rooted, and copy this comewhere safe on your pc in order that if you make a boo boo and it won't OTA update, you can then do a TB of all your current apps / data, boot into CWM, restore your NANDroid backup which should take your phone "back in time" to the point just after you rooted, and restore your apps / data after installing TB from the market, THEN receive the OTA?
edit:
ok, i`ve rooted the Razr, installed bootstrap and adb pull / system.
but one thing i think i might have done wrong..?
i`ve enabled safe system in the recovery menu. and it took a backup of my system to the emmc..
then i rebooted and nothing happened. held down power and volume down for 6 seconds. a little flicker came and was able to go back to safe menu and disable the safe mode.
booted up normal.
im guessing i am missing something here. a partition to boot or something?
edit 2. okay, i obviously need a rom.. can i use my original rom?

is it possible to get my 2.3.5 stock android out of the phone as an update.zip so i can use it as my 2nd system with bootstrap?
got the bootstrap succesfully, but got no rom to play with..

[Q] Rooted from 1.4.0 (now 9.9.9) - should I unroot and go for CM7?

I have the original NT. I rooted at 1.4.0 and now have version 9.9.9. I haven't been following the XDA threads for a few months, but it looks like CM7 is finalized. I'm pretty happy with my NT as it is, but was wondering what CM7 might do for me and if I should go that route. Would mainly be interested in better battery life. Any advice?
As you have 16GB nook tablet:
* Download and copy the ROM you want to flash to your sdcard or internal sdcard (MyNOOK)
* Download CWM recovery flasher app by Indirect and install ClockWorkMod recovery (wait 10 seconds after hit install cwm recovery button so it installs well)
* Boot into CWM by using the quickboot app (download from google play) or manually powering on your device holding power+N buttons until you see see a white screen with a box, then let go power button and it will boot into CWM.
* Backup your current ROM from backup & restore in CWM
* After backup you are now good to flash any other ROM, follow instructions in respective thread about installation (cwm > Install .zip from sdcard).
Basically when changing to a total different ROM you should do all the wipes (wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache) then flash the ROM, that way you don't get issues with apps so you better backup your apps with Titanium Backup previous install new ROM .
~ Veronica
My question, at this point, is whether or not it's worth it? What advantages will I get over having a rooted NT? Especially, will it improve battery life?

CM7 does improve battery life lots more than stock. And the advantages of root are many starting by the ability to run very useful apps like e.g titanium backup that require root, access to paths that unrooted is just not possible and that gives you the ability to apply mods and customize your android device as you want because you get superuser permissions, which means you can do and undo whatever you want with your device. Basically with rooted Android there is almost no limits (almost because device compatibility with apps e.g games is a factor not many do so well).

If I understand your question correctly you are wondering about advantages of CM7 over Rooted Stock OS right?
In that case, you get a more pure Android experience, the Google Play store is raiser to access. You also knock anything Android can do either way but with CM7 some annoying issues are fixed like settings screens appear correctly (no more white on white or black on black).
While you can read books on CM7 via the BN Nook for Android app, magazines and newspapers are off limits. You also have to use a modded version of hulu plus to get that going.
I personally, tried it and went back to rooted stock OS but I read magazines.
Do as Veronica said. If you don't like it, you can always boot into Clockworkmod and restore your backup and be back to where you are now.
Unless you use some of B&N services, like the magazines, IMO there's no reason to stay on the stock OS. Its ****. People here have made it tolerable with various workarounds but its ultimately ****.
Edit: for the love of god though, the first thing you better do in clockworkmod is make a backup and secure that backup somewhere.
cant install cwm

[Q] Need help with CyanogenMod installation and memory issue

(I'm new here and not sure if this thread is in the right place, if not, please feel free to move it.)
Hey, everyone. I rooted my phone and downloaded Titanium Backup Pro (Also backed up data to SD, I believe), Rom Manager Pro, GooManager, Root Explorer Pro and Triangle away. My memory went from using 1.5gigs to now using 6gigs. What gives? I checked the apps and they don't take up that much. Could it be that the Titanium backup Pro backedup files on my device instead? If so, how can I clear that up?
Also, I'm currently using stock rom, I believe and my Juice Defender log said to get Cyanogen Mod, so I looked it up for a few hours. Downloaded what I think I need and followed a YouTube video that didn't help me at all. Rom manager premium apparently set my Recovery Setup to Clock Work Mod 6.0.4.4 but I just switched it to TWRP. All I want to do is set up the latest CyanogenMod stable version on my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 (4.2.2 Jelly Bean). (It's apparently running AOSP, not sure what that is.) The model number is SPH-L720, I believe, if that helps. I just want to set this up without messing my phone up and then remove bloatware and have my phone running great with excellent battery. I believe I backedup my files during one of the recovery setups, but I'm not too sure.
Can anyone kindly help me with a step by step on how I can achieve this? In a simple way, please. I would greatly appreciate it as I am new to this. If this helps any, I rooted my phone through Odin. I don't want to format my phone as I like the apps I have and I like the Nova theme I have.

[Q] Post Root Questions - Noobie

After many attempts I finally got my Samsung Fantasy V2.3.5 rooted. I've tried several methods that I found on forums and after running one of them with Odin, I now have a slightly system. That did not root so I kept trying and now have it rooted and superuser privileges which is what I wanted so I can delete some bloat.
But now I have a few questions (probably pretty basic but as I said, I'm really new at this)
When I ran the Odin attempt I installed CI500_VZW_EH03_GB_CM.tar.md5 and also a program called atlas_v2.2.pit, which I understand created a new partition. I also ran cwm-recovery-ALL.tar and I can now boot into CWM recovery.
I would like to clean up my device and get rid of all that I put on it that I don't need. Here are my questions:
1. Can I get back to my original system? Is the new system on a different partition and if I delete that partition, will the device than default to my original?
2. If I go into CWM Recovery and clear the cache/reset, besides losing all of my data (contacts, settings, etc) will I also lose ROOT?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well,,, using ODIN and the ROM file and the .pit file is essentially formatting the internal harddrive of your phone and recreating different & new partitions for the Rom to operate with.
It did not keep what you had.
{that also answers you question #1 )

is a good post about PIT files and what they do.
the link is on the Galaxy S I9000 page which is a cousin phone of the fascinate, couldn't find the fassy version.
edit::: oh here it is ...

Edit again:::
to answer question #2...
No, by using that particular .tar.md5 file it is already pre-rooted,,, so wiping cache, or dalvik, or "factory reset" will not erase root
