[Q] Video Calling (Real video call, not skype or google talk) - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All.
I was hoping someone could advise me on how to make a normal carrier based video call. I've looked everywhere and am a little shocked to see that my atrix does not support video calls.
when calling my atrix from another phone on the same network that supports video calling (Telecom New Zealand XT network which is UMTS(WCDMA)) i get 'cannt call, other phone does not support video calling'. hmph!
can anyone help?
many thanks
Gavin.

Wow, for real? There is Qik, Skype, Gtalk, Tang, Yahoo Messenger, Fring... Just because there is not a carrier specific one (Hardly any carrier actually supports carrier specific video calls)...who cares?
You looked everywhere? LOL with what, Bing?

Carrier based video calling is actually pretty common outside the US, even though it is almost completely unheard of here. I'm a little surprised the international versions of this phone don't support video calls, but not surprised at all to see that feature lacking on the US version.
Have there been any Android phones that do this? I know the international version of my old Fuze (Touch Pro) had an FFC and did it even though the AT&T version didn't.

Unfortunately android phones don't support standard video calling.
And yes, most of the world has a standard video call that works same on all carriers, even between carriers works. The usa is the only place that does not have video calling.

Does anyone know why this is though?
And does anyone know how video calling (direct, not third-party like google, skype, fring, etc.) works exactly, I get that a line is connected between the two phones, but what about information sharing? Are there any special permissions needed to use this direct data connection?
What about the video/sound compressors?
Why doesn't America feature this?
I hope i didn't go off topic, but I am rather interested in this......
Will google, and if any cares/helps me find me answer, i will post everything i'va gathered

it uses your data connection to stream video to each other. plain and simple. uses the same data network as your phone's internet.

Actually my friend has a galaxy s ii which does have carrier video calling.I wonder how I can enable it on my atrix with gingerbread loaded, fresh from motorola update...

i don't know what "HLR" is, but Qik, Tango and Google Talk Video (the apps that work on the Atrix) are not carrier dependent. i've gotten all three to work fine on a Galaxy Tab Wifi (no cellular carrier).

Ah yes they will work because they just use any old internet connection.the service I am looking for runs over the carrier. Hlr is home location register. Or your subscriber profile.

yeah even in canada rogers had this service but it didn't take off as the cameras sucked and there wasn't much use for it when you add in the screen size of the phones that had it. I had it on my HTC TyTn and Touch Pro. I think one carrier was looking to roll it out in the US. AT&T was against it so all those winmo devices that came out on their network had the front camera taken out. I could be wrong, but the Iphone 4 was the first device where they allowed it.

I confirm that some Android phones have a carrier video calling feature.
I own an Atrix 4G (2.3.4), and my wife owns a Samsung Galaxy S II (2.3.3)
And yes, there is a video call option in her phone's dialer.
We live in Moscow and have different carriers. 2 days ago i bricked my Atrix 4G trying to unlock its bootloader, so i had to stick back to my rubbish Samsung Z510. As soon as i put my sim-card into it and powered on the phone i could see a "3g" icon in status bar. And yes there was a video call option in my z510's dialer. It worked like a charm. Carriers video calls in Moscow cost the same as regular voice calls, so i'm quite interested in finding a way to mod my atrix as soon as i get a new one instead of bricked one. From today the source code of Atrix 4G is opened and i just hope that xda developers will pay attention to adding carrier video call in their future custom roms.

You can also try Oovoo. It works for both computer to phone and phone to phone calls.

Dowload "Qik for Atrix". The app was designed for the Atrix but works on other phones. Its best to tell the other user to download Qik on their phone as well.

android dialers doesnt support yet, just with apps we can do that...

I use Tango. worked better than fring for me.
but I live in California.
so then... I guess my input is useless...
sorry. :\

please note this thread is just for network provider provided video calling.native to the network. So apps like skype etc are not related to this thread. Android does do video call on the galaxy so it must be a mater of time before someone makes this work on atrix.
Many thanks.

The issues with the app appear kernel related, which means we'll likely be at the mercy of source releases unless someone gets very lucky. If it's any consolation people are having issues getting it to work on the G2...
Most likely by the time it's "fixed" for the G2, and the MT4G is actually available the solution will be imminent.

it works in the rom leak for the N1 too,if anyone wants to try porting it. it's the MT4g rom ported to the nexus,it's in their android development section.
I'm not sure what exactly you mean by WiFi calling (VOIP, SIP or something completely new and/or different all together) but Skype now works using the JP* Froyo builds out there. The only thing is it restricts you to WiFi only if it detects that you're in the US.
I hope that helps.

This is kind of like the wifi calling that Blackberrys have but different. Say you are out of a network area maybe out of country or in my wife's case at work in a hospital if you have wifi access then this app will allow you to make calls over TMobiles network using your plan minutes. This is not free calling nor will you be able to switch back and forth. If you are on a call using the wifi app and you leave the range of the wifi signal your call will be dropped.
There is another thread in Themes and Apps that has the apk. I have it on my vibrant but I don't think TMobile has released it fully, kind of like Media Hub was at first, so right now I haven't heard that it's operational for anyone with any phone.
Oh and I've heard people spreading rumors that you'll have to pay 9.99 a month but according to tmobile's website it will be free as you will be using your own minutes. Here is a link to the official tmobile Wifi cslling Faqs page http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24195.xml

VoIP using Google Voice+Sipgate+SipDroid
So if you want to do free VoIP calling (not using your T-mobile voice minutes) within the USA you
1) Get a Google Voice account (if you don't already have it)
2) Get a free Sipgate account (gives you a phone number that can be called)
3) Get SipDroid to conenct to your Sipgate account
This is what you do
Setup your Sipgate account.
Install Sipdroid to your phone and connect to Sipgate
- set your Sipdroid to only be on when you are on WiFi
Setup your google voice to forward to your Sipgate phone number
When you make outgoing phone calls use your google voice
Voila! You now have unlimited incoming and outgoing phonecalls through GoogleVoice and Sipgate over your WiFi.
Technically you could do this over 3G as well. Not sure how the quality is though.

Is that free outgoing minutes? If you utilize Google Voice what happens is that Google Voice first calls your Sipgate account and then calls the person you call. Which means that your call with be an incoming, which makes it free. You have to utilize Google Voice for this however to work properly.

[Q] Anyone using Skype on Bell Atrix? need help!

I am using the Bell Atrix with Stock ROM without root
When I am using skype, the opposite cannot hear me clear at all
and when I call echo123, i can hear my recording is like really windy
is there anyone having the same issue? or just me......
i doubt it is a hardware issue or not, since when i google i can find nothing...
PS: I tried use wired headset and BT headset, none works!
skype doesnt work on the atrix. theres currently no fix.
I have heard that Skype works on the new Telstra SBF, but not on the stock Bell or AT&T.
No idea when updates will be coming from Bell or AT&T to fix the problem. Apparently it is a problem with the implementation of the AudioRecord API, but we can't be sure exactly HOW the Telstra SBF has fixed the problem. They might have fixed the API, or perhaps the Android Market is just deploying a new version of Skype to users with the Telstra SBF. There is very little information about this yet.
Also no word yet from the beta testers of the new AT&T update if Skype has been fixed

I can confirm Telstra SBF (which works on the Bell Atrix) works with Skype and the quality is CRYSTAL clear using mobile data. Part of that being that the SBF is HSUPA unlocked, which is different from the Stock Bell and ATT sbfs.
This means that upload speed on mobile data is capped to 300kbs making VOIP and any kind of tethering, streaming.. a nightmare.

I just unlocked the HUSPA by following the steps i found on a youtube video (im still a new user so can't post external links but if you search "How to unlock HSUPA Bell Atrix" Youtube user is SilencedReview), uncapping the speeds however my skype is still not working.. getting nothing but static on the other end when i talk..
my speeds are testing fairly consistently using speedtestnet app at ping= 72ms download=7207kbps upload=1191kbps so i know the mod worked..
So im kind of stumped.. a little annoyed.. any ideas?

Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.

After the Bell upgrade, I was able to use a SIP client (CSipSimple) to register to a SIP service and make good quality calls over both WiFi and mobile data. Prior to the upgrade I could register, but the quality was so choppy it was unusable. I'm guessing the "Skype" fix is the same thing that fixed this. I use VoIP.ms service, and it works well now.

Video calls via 3G

Samsung Galaxy SII is supposed to support video calls through 3G communications. I have read someone having trouble with video calls. Anyone got it to work?
Video calls through 3G communication is supposed to work with any 3G phone, regardless if its Android, Symbian, or whatever mobile OS on it. Apple made their own solution with FaceTime, and I know google has its own solution GTalk? as well.
I think it is superfluous that Google should make their own solution like Apple did as it does not support interoperability between 3G devices. Voice and video calls are normal mobile communication methods that should not have different implementation that whats in the 3G standard.
Apparently it's all dependent on your network. Give them a ring and they'll probably tell you it needs to be enabled.

Well, all networks in Norway supports video calls. I would also think its is supported in most countries in Europe.

[Q] about Turn by Turn Voice navigation & Video Calling & Smileys

Need to clarify a couple of things before buyin this phone:
1. Does GS2 provide free turn by turn voice navigation in India (like Ovi Maps in Nokia devices) and does it work offline?
2. Is it possible to do video calling through the network (NOT through internet or wifi, but through the network operator like voice calls. Again like in Symbian OS)
3. Also does it have smiley support in messaging? Not the green android smileys but standard yellow ones
Thanx!
Sorry to post again. But someone can please answer this? I am new to android..
1. Does GS2 provide free turn by turn voice navigation in India (like Ovi Maps in Nokia devices) and does it work offline?
There is Google Maps Navigation, it's free but its not offline. You can use a certain Google Labs option to download a part of the map to your phone. But here's the catch. It's not available in India.
There is no other free GPS software out there. There are trials, but no free ones.
2. Is it possible to do video calling through the network (NOT through internet or wifi, but through the network operator like voice calls. Again like in Symbian OS)
No, you NEED wifi. Plus, it's impossible to transmit video without a data connection. The standard calling-protocol has such little bandwidth which makes it impossible to transmit video.
3. Also does it have smiley support in messaging? Not the green android smileys but standard yellow ones
Nope. There are custom SMS apps you can download from the android market that have their own smilies and plugins.
Other countries have standard video calling via the cellular network, nothing data or wifi related. Unfortunately the sgs2 does not support this standard for some reason like Nokia phones do.

Yeah over here the cellular comapnies provide the facility over 3G network. No need of fringe or other apps. Its not just Samsung, even over HTC you cannot video call over 3G network! So guess its an andoid limitation over its features.
EDIT:
So another Clarification regarding Voice Call
This is how it works is it:
1. Get connected to the Internet
2. Have an 3rd party app like Fringe or Skype
3. Call the another person.
So it looks like the other person MUST and should have this 3rd party app. So in other words i cannot do video call over android to another person if he will not be having the Fringe/Skype?
1: No there are no free offline navigation aps. Like ovi you have to pay for the navigation. There are a few good ones e.g. sygic, ndrive
2: yes you can do video calls as long as you are on 3g
3: I use handcent that supports full emoji emotes can't remember what the stick one does.

Video calling

As nobody wants to repond on my request posted in Jelly Bean Leak official topic, I will try here...
(They prefer to talk about transparency bug which change there life !)
Thanks in advance for your help .
Since I have flashed my phone with Jelly Bean leaks, I can't make video calls. All work fine with Google+ for example, but my question is about the original android phone dialer.
This feature works well before the transition to Jelly Bean, in the same place, with the same network carrier and last, the same network settings.
Can anybody try video calling (if it's free/include in your plan and if you have friend to call with video). I don't know if it's an issue on JBleak or an issue with my phone carrier.
Nobody use it ? You bought SGS3 only to go on the internet ?

:good: It is not the first time that we see here people without forum'users help. It's a pity.
She has front facing camera (an old Nokia N97mini) with another carrier (and network). I think it's an issue of my SGS3, because I have put my micro-SIM in another phone (my previous phone, a Nokia N900 running Maemo 5 ) and it works fine with the same apn settings.
But no luke with Jelly Bean. I will try downgrading to ICS.
