[Q] Venue in Europe: PCS or AWS optimized version? - Dell Venue

Hello to everyone
I am considering buying the Dell Venue Android phone from Dell US site, and it's giving me the option to choose from 3G-Optimized for PCS networks (AT&T, etc) and 3G-Optimized for AWS networks (T-Mobile, etc). The problem is that I would be using it in Europe, with European SIM cards. The phone is unlocked, so no problems there. I just want to ask which version is better suited for European 3G networks, some say neither, some say either...
Could somebody here shed some light into this? It would be much appreciated
Thank you

Ask your provider. In Russia, 3G runs at 2100MHz and both models working fine.

Thanx Samver
Here in Serbia 3G also runs on 2100 (or so I'm told), but my service provider couldn't or wouldn't help me with purchasing Venue, I think they're just clueless.
Which version of Venue are you using? Are you able to use HSPA/HSDPA in Russia on your phone?

my phone is the AWS version, from Hong Kong, HSPA/HSDPA working

Get the AWS version if you dont plan on using it with At&t in the US or rogers in canada.
PCS = US model: 850/1900/2100
AWS: 900/1700/2100
Most european carriers: 900/2100
As they both support 2100 you'll still get 3g whereever 2100 3g is available. But in the unlikely chance that only 900 is available only the AWS model can recieve 3g on it.

Thanx Manii, thanx Samver, you've been most helpful
I guess I'll go with AWS version, can't wait to get my hands on it!

Can you do me a favor when you recieve it?
When you get it on and booted can you go to settings -> about phone and tell me the:
Baseband version:
Build number:

I will, no problem, it'll just take some time until I receive it.

Just got my Venue, looks wonderful
@ TheManii
Baseband version: GTOUB1A130730-AWS
Build number: 13505
I bought it unlocked from dell.com few weeks ago, as AWS 3G optimized version.

Thanks for responding, that sure took a while to ship.
I was hoping to see a new rom that i dont have, but as it has 307 i already have that rom

Well, it arrived after about a week, I was waiting for a friend of mine to bring it to Europe.
Hope we'll see new ROM soon...
Just a quick question - any ideas where I could find the drivers for my Venue, for Win XP? Wanna use USB tether, but it keeps asking me for Dell Venue driver, and the tetherxp.inf from Google is not functioning...
Thanx

Anyone? Still can't use USB tethering, tried tetherxp.inf, tried ADB tethering driver from sd card from my Venue, tried Dell Connection Manager, Dell Control point etc.
Thanx

Found a solution, easytether.

Works ok for now.

Unlocked US Streak from Dell

Hi
My unlocked US streak directly bought from dell is on its way to me in Texas.
Will it work to make calls and 3g data when I travel to India ? It is triband gsm baseband out there used by operators and users can use any phone.
I m worried if I have to flash europe baseband over?
Thanks

Ok I did some reading and think 2g calls should work
3g in india is 2100MHz
Streak should support 2100MHz so it should work too. Can somepne confirm?

the streak is quad band 2g, in other words, a world phone so you will b able to make calls, not sure about 3g though
@rptw
Thank you ...
One related question to all, so that when someone knowledgeable passes by, I can get my answer:
Q: Is the UMTS band frequency for Dell Streak (US unlocked version) a software configuration thing or is it part of the hardware radios?
I saw a screenshot of the phone settings on the web that seems to suggest the Dell Streak having the option to choose the 900 MHZ UMTS band, if needed. Can someone confirm?
according to gsmarena.com, there are two models of the streak in terms of 3g bands go, one is the 900/2100 version and the other is the 850/1900/2100 (att/rogers) version. depending on which one it is that you get will determine which frequencies your phone will work on so yes, to answer your question, band frequency is part of hardware radios.
Dell Streak unlock
Does anyone has been able to use dell streak 5 unlock from dell with T mobile USA and get 3g data service?
I just bougth a aws one off ebay that works with tmobile 3g, but They are rare to show up on there.
what is aws?
Aws is 1700 Mhz 3g used in Tmobile in the US. The unlocked streak from Dell has only the at&t 3g support and 2100mhz
Aws streak is rare and not on sale from Dell

[Q] Dell Streak

I have a unlocked Dell Streak with T-mobile service. I am unable to get 3G service only Edge is working. Is this normal with unlocked phones. Anyone have the same problem?
where did you buy your streak from? if it's not an AWS model you cant get 3g from TMO
Frequency Bands
If the phone was built for AT&T then your SIM card will allow use on TMO, bue thr radios will not tune UMTS/HSDPA properly. You will be stuck with Edge until the merger.
Dell Streak now works with 3G from T-Mobile

Do the following if you really need 3G service from T-Mobile on your Streak originally from AT&T:
1. Sell it!
2. Buy a Dell Streak locked to Cincinnati Bell because their version works with 3G on T-Mobile!
3. Unlock it (check article on unlocking Cincinnati Bell Streak). DON'T forget your rebate!!

I am not quite sure, but I used an unlocked ATT streak with my Local provider and the 3G was working, just check with T-Mobile how to configure the Access Point Network (APN).
In dell streak you can find it in below path:
Setting >> Wireless & Network Settings >> Mobile Network Setting >> Access Points Names.
Hello, I have a unlocked Dell Streak, i don't whant open new theme, that's why I write here.
Baseband Version of my Streak : GAUSB1A134700-US
I whant unofficial update my Dell to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. As i know there is only StreakDroid 2.0.0 built on these version of Android? Maybe someone know performance in StreakDroid 2.0.0 better then in 347? What about playing games is it better?
Also before update I whant make BackUp of my firmware, give me please link to Instuction or link to ready 347 firmware.
Thanks for helping!)

[Q] Help me with my streak, no t mobile 3G signal

I found that I am having a pretty slow internet surfing speed after flsah with Simple Streak ROM 1.2 By Spidla (Thank you, it's a great ROM!!).
Why I can't recieve 3G signal on T-Mobile ? I have 4G plan anyway. Edge really kills me as it only have a speed of 12 KB/s.
Could anyone help me out ? What ROM else could have 3G signal on T-Mobile? Let me know as well ~~~ Thank you guys
It's a Dell retail model (unlocked one, not Att, maybe), T-mbile assistant says that probably my device it's not the AWS model, which support UMTS900, UMTS1700, UMTS2100.
My service tag is G85Z1P1.
Your streak is likely the US model and not the AWS model.
That can only get 3g on At&t and not Tmo
I have figured out the problem. I checked that there are people selling AWS model at $750 on eBay, is there anywhere possible for me to get an AWS besides that one? Thank you
You will need to get a AWS streak, really doesnt matter how.
Might be cheaper and easier to try getting one from Cincanatti Bell and unlocking it. I'd assume theirs are new stock. But I cant help you with details since I havnt tried it myself.
If you buy off ebay you'll need to be the judge of price and condition and age of the streak.
Looks like they have the AWS model in stock. But it's hard to get one from Cincinnati as I live in Buffalo.
Maybe try to change the chips or the antenna. It's radiculous as Streak 7 can support 850/900/1700/1900 at the same time. why not our streak.

Because that's how they built it.
Have any body in the world tried Streak 7's Frameware.apk and service.odex on streak ? bricked or not ?
The AT&T Streaks and the ones purchased directly from Dell unlocked do not have the hardware for the T-Mobile bands. So no software will fix that.
What if I use the Antenna and capacitance that can support 900/1700/2100 frequency? ripe some from T-mobile made hardware and soldering them onto the Streak chip board ?
Or, If anyone lives in Cincinati could help me get one from Cincinati Bell.
You'd need to get one off an AWS streak to be sure it's compatable, then there's the issue of weither or not the mainboard will accept a diff radio.
I have tried hard to find someone in Cincinnati could help me out. And also it will be riscky to have a AWS model as ATT is processing buy off T mobile, if they successes, then T mobile 3G will dead and all 3G users will have to exchange their phones(probably only the one has contracts)
Do you know any other carrier in US use 850/1900 for 3G ?

I am not sure why you think that the T-Mobile bands would be dead. I think that in order to take advantage of existing infra-structure new phones after a merger would work on both bands and your existing phone would continue to work as it does now.
check out this link:http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2011/03/21/att-says-t-mobile-3g-phones-will-need-to-be-replaced/
AWS model will only work with T mobile 3G, sucks when traveling aboard.

UK Version and tmobile 3G US

After searching I'm still unclear about the unlocked UK Dell Streak 5 version working on US Tmobile and getting 3G. Any help is constructive help is appreciated...
The EU model can get 2g service on tmo usa.
Only the AWS model can get 3g on it
be careful with the AWS version of streak TMO might be blocking 3G data on it
http://android.modaco.com/topic/317465-t-mobile-usa-3g-dell-streak-data-being-blocked/
why would it be blocked? the majority of aws users here are on tmo and your link is a year old

[Q] Streak on NextG in australia? UMTS 850MHz

I am currently looking at purchasing a used Dell Streak, it is in Australia (so am I) but the seller says it was originally from the USA. Looking at a few different sites, the spec for American Streaks says UMTS 850. (Eg.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dell_Streak )
The network I would most like to use here is Australia is Telstra's NextG network; it is described here: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/3g_for_network_engineers
thus:
""3G" is a broad category of standards and services around "broadband" mobile wireless voice and data. Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is part of this family and is the standard used for 3G services in Australia. Telstra's NextG product is a UMTS implementation using a Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) radio carrier in the 850 MHz band. There are "legacy" pockets of 2100 MHz used in some areas. Most modems are capable of automatically switching between the two bands, though not always of making the best choice. Some Telstra technical staff recommend sticking to the 850 MHz band."
I know that the Dell Streak version sold here by Optus (Telstra didn't sell them)
was NOT usable on the NextG network, but the info above from the links seems to imply that a Streak built for the USA would be?
Am I correct, or am I missing something?
Thanks, Bernie.
Yes, the US Dell Streak will work on Telstra's NextG.
Currently using it. Getting around 2770kbps down and 1339kbps up.
so um.... hardware should be the same, so a baseband / radio flash + custom mod should enable it?
you running a custom rom or a us standard?
cheers mate
blues
Thanks bluhound,
I'm also interested to know if you can update an Aussie or UK version like live_blues suggests. Any idea?
Thanks, Bernie.
You don't have to flash anything. The US firmware will work with NextG out of the box.
I don't think you will be able to flash an Aussie ROM as only Optus has the Streak and that model operates on the 900Mhz freq, not Telstra's 850Mhz.
I am currently running on StreakDroid 1.9.1 with DSP v360.
Dell Streak FAQ - xda wiki
See the last two lines, roms do not determine/affect your 3G freqs or lock status, it's determined solely by the configuration applied to the device when it was manufactured.
Roms do not care what submodel/lock status you have, you can install any rom and it wont change anything here.
There is also no concept of a AUS rom as the only roms loaded on devices sold there are unbranded/retail (unless they changed it some time during it's lifetime)
thx Manii, so its a manufacturing thingy... interesting... im sporting a UK Streak in Oz, guess I would just have to try
