Dropped my phone today and the glass is cracked. Other than the fact that there are superficial cracks, the display and touch screen functionality seem to still be perfect. I have a few questions on how to proceed:
1) From what I can see, the crack is in the DIGITIZER and not the SCREEN although it was my first instinct to call it the "screen." Is this correct?
2) I see a bunch of people on eBay and other sites selling replacement kits that come with the digitizer, tools, and adhesive. There is no way for me to tell if the digitizer is a cheap aftermarket product, or a genuine OEM replacement. Should I care, or will it work just as good as the original either way?
3) I see the DIY thread on how to replace the SCREEN, but could not find one specifically for the digitizer. If I follow the screen DIY, will I get sufficient access to the digitizer, to the point where all I have left to do is unplug and replace, or is there anything else I need to do?
4) If I do this myself, is there a chance that the touch screen functionality will not be as good as it was originally?
I have extensive experience in fixing many different types of electronic and mechanical devices, but have never worked on phones before.

What I have heard on the evo4g is that the digitizer and lcd are glued together. It is enough of a pain in the ass to seperate them without damaging the lcd itself to be worth buying a lcd/digitizer that is already together and replacing the whole thing.
Now I said evo 4G. I would assume it is the exact same issue for the 3D.

From what I've gathered, it is glued together and they sell the adhesive. I don't feel like separating them and possibly doing a bad job of putting them back together. I've done that before with taillights (which didn't go too well) and I can't imagine doing it on a phone. Thanks for the input...I could only find 2 complete screen/digitizer combo for sale on eBay. Anyone know of a better source?

Don't even jack with it. My girl had some scratches on her screen and she bought the new plastic piece. Lets just say the 3D is now in the garbage.

Yea I'd be really ****ty if that happened to me, especially considering the even the 3d still looks perfect behind the scratches...I guess I'm going to just buy the replacement screen+digitizer combo and do it myself...if I buy them already assembled it should be plug and play from what I have read.

Nah, they are more than capable. I replace digitizers frequently and I rarely have to break out my "good set' of tools. Yeah these are simply cheap lumps of plastic. But they work. And these tools should be safer to use than almost anything that the average person, who doesn't do this sort of thing regularly, might have on hand. I just didn't want him to order a digitizer and attack it with a butterknife. I was trying to be subtle about it tho... We don't want anyone to scuff their bezel now do we?
I am always on the lookout for great deals on tools for this. And I look forward to your recommendation for a tool set.

Warranty covers a broken screen? Reason I ask is because I would rather have MOTO replace the screen (or the phone entirely) than me replacing the screen and voiding the warranty. I do not have insurance
I broke the glass on my phone 3 weeks after I bought it and didnt have insurance on it. I called motorola and they sent me an rma. I sent it in and they sent it back to me fixed in less than a week. If I remember right it cost $90 for them to fix it.
so it was only the digitizer after all?

A friend and I splurged on the $60 iFixit tool kit because we made some spare cash on the side repairing classmates' phones. It works well, although I still don't know if I would justify the price. It seems that the major complaint on reviews for replacement electronics parts are the parts that come with them, if at all, so maybe getting a better set is worth it if you replace digitizers frequently. Replacing the Atrix digitizer/screen is a fairly easy task compared to other phones until you get to putting the new screen on, at which point trying to get the cables back into the housing becomes a pain.'

Surprisingly there is no video to put it together...
Let me tell you from experience that it's damn near impossible to put it back together without tearing the digitizer ribbon straight off the screen while trying to slip it through that tiny hole that you pulled it out of. I've replaced two screens and I still don't think I can get it right.
My screen cracked twice while still under warranty, so I played the clueless n00b after I replaced the glass (cracked screens are not covered under warranty) and claimed the phone wasn't working and I couldn't figure out why.
Strange thing is, I also couldn't find a place online that would do replacement digitizers either. I didn't look for long, but if you don't have an option of a warranty return, I'd pay the $50 or so to let someone else do this for you and get it right...
YMMV...
I recommend taking it apart completely, you can attach the digitizer to the bezel/chassis and then you don't have to deal with trying to slide the cable through that tiny hole, you can just clean the digitizer, clean the lcd, put them together and then put the entire mounting plate back together and it just clips straight in...essentially you make this:

completely removes the chance of tearing the cable off the back of the digitizer...which is pretty common, sort of adds the step of getting the mounting plate off the fascia bezel...but its not to hard, be careful when popping up the volume/buttons camera cable area, that cable tears easily.

I have a question 4 all the evo 3d owners....can anyone please tell me how to remove the genuine EVO case to replace it with the white one??? I look at the guide to remove the screen....but I don't think is necessary to remove all the components to replace only the external cover.

Unfortunately to replace all of it, it is necessary. Your only other solution is to buy a screen, digitizer, and LCD in white case all in one piece, and then swap your motherboard into the other part of the white housing. I know, it sounds crazy...but the screen is on part of the housing with adhesive...it is a real ***** to do it without shattering the LCD behind it and reapplying the glass to the housing, strait, even, and flat.

He's right it's a huge pain to separate the lcd from the front case. And then it wont fit right when u put it back. sorry. it's one of the worst things to come from htc.. the part that takes the most wear and damage should be swapped easily. i would say it shouldnt be attempted at all.
if you still want to do it then you can buy an extra lcd + digitizer on ebay. leave your original case + lcd + digitzer in a drawer and just move the motherboard into the white case with the new lcd and digitizer.
if youre tight on money then make an attempt anyway but fully expect to buy a whole original case + lcd + digitzer later.

Faiyo makes a good point, you would think that the part that receives the most wear and tear would be the easiest to swap. I wonder, do they do this because they want someone to be required to just buy a new device, or they honestly can't come up with a better way of assembling these devices? It isn't like this is unique to this phone, or HTC. Every phone does it this way.
I think the OP made a good choice, attempting to do this is almost a guaranteed failure. The only way I personally would be capable of doing it would be the method I posted. I did it that way to replace my glass and digitizer.

yeah a buddy of mine tried to swap out his touch screen and lcd... turns out you have to pretty much take the phone apart inorder to separate the touch screen and lcd from the front bezel. the part that sucks is out of the 1 tear down video that exists the guy didnt even bother showing us how to take the screen and lcd out... quite possibly the most important part of the whole tear down lol

Lol! I know right? To disassemble it past that point the guide gets to you have to cut around the edge of the screen to loosen adhesive abit. Then stick something to pry it off. You run the risk of screwing up the bevel part, cracking the LCD, or leaving adhesive on parts of the LCD that you can't remove without scratching it to hell.
Then...forget about assembling it back the right way, I think it takes a lamp, genie, magic carpet, and the hand of god or something, I sure can't do it, and I feel I am about as mechanically inclined as one gets. I just don't have the right tools to do it with ease.

what are they supposed to do screw it to the front of the housing? lol. adhesive makes perfect sense when assembling glass to plastic. it needs to be in there tight.

I saw a TBolt pop up on Craigslist and ended up trading my OG Droid (that I bought from a friend for $50) + $25 bucks for a Tbolt in very good condition but the Digitizer is cracked..
Its not Horrible, I still use the phone and love 4G.. but I want to replace the Digitizer.. I have done a few screens on IProducts and older phones but I have herd lots of horror stories about Digitizers not working after being replaced or dead spots and ghost touches on the TBolt..
So How many have done it and everything has gone 100% fine and where did you get your screen and adhesive? And then how many say i should save my pennies and trust someone else to do it?

Put to much 3 m tape on one and it smudged on ends and touch screen
Only worked half way but if you use hair dryer and get really hot and use a small amount of tape it isn't that bad but watched video on YouTube of repair from a repair universe and that's where I bought it

So Repair Universe has good stuff? I was hoping someone had sourced a better (read; cheaper) replacement.. $40 is steep compared to the $15 Digitizers that are still working on Itouches i replaced 2 years ago.. and I have never had to separate a LCD and Digitizer before when they were glued together.. that was the biggest thing I am unsure of..
I replaced a digitizer/LCD combo on the Thunderbolt, but I've also replaced the digitizer alone on the HTC Inspire and HD2 many times, and the Thunderbolt is very similar to these two (especially the Inspire). It's not very hard to separate the digitizer from the LCD, just heat the glass up very good first, and make sure you get some good 2mm adhesive for reassembling them. The digitizer does not adhere to the frame at all (though the shell does sort of wrap around and clip onto the glass), it is only adhered to the LCD so you have to be sure to get them nice and tight. The best way to do this is to just get an LCD/digitizer combo pre assembled, then it only takes about 5 minutes from start to finish, and you don't have to be nearly as careful. You can get the combo for like $50 on eBay, just make sure you buy from a reputable seller. Repairs Universe is trustworthy, but they sell the same stuff you get on eBay, and everything is made in China to begin with.
Awesome to hear. I won't be going to repare universe then. 40 for the digitizer alone is steep to me. I am not sure if I want to try and just do the digitizer or just swap both. I bought this TBolt for $60 used so I can probably afford to just buy the whole assembly.

don't want to burst your bubble, but that is the digitizer only. i think its really really hard to separate the two from each other. that is why they are so expensive to buy. but hey, might as well try if it is already broke. i understand the lcd is fine btw. i replace screens pretty often and with Samsung, you usually have to buy them fused already. guess it couldn't hurt to try though. good luck to ya, you may need a heat gun and thin wire. keep us updated when it comes in. Yes only for the screen len, not digitizer. I figure I bought it then trying to find the link to replace the screen without digitizer. All of them mention it hard to accomplish. I should had bought the screen with digitizer, but hey I will see how it goes...

just my opinion is to find complete digitizer and lcd fused together, or else you are going to have a bad time. they are very expensive, but it shouldnt be too hard to do as long as you take your time. if you found a digitizer+lens, with out the lcd, it will be really difficult. heat gunning then getting something super thin to slide down to cut between your good lcd and cracked digitizer without scratching the lcd. ive done it on an iphone 4 and the lcd was scratched from it, but it did still work and i didnt break the lcd. if you do lens only, im not sure if you will be able to get the actual digitizer off of the original lens without tearing it an then placing it on the new lens with out bubbling up or anything. i would hate for you to be out a phone for a while. good luck to you sir

I replaced the screen on my evo 3d due to a faulty digitizer and ordered parts for some random place. They turned out to be [email protected] and want to avoid that mistake. All I should need is the digitizer right? Is the glass and digitizer one piece?
It is one piece, the digi/lcd are fused. There are alot of ebay suppliers who will send a new part of it is defective. I've had pretty good luck recently, even on the evo lte a few times.

Couple notes:
Some people say you can just replace the glass using a heat gun or blow dryer but I've read more stories of people breaking their lcd doing this I would try to get the glass off first then ordering the parts. If that works you just saved yourself 40 bucks.
If that doesn't work and your feeling clever and fearful this may happen again then I would suggest buying the lcd and digitizer separately. Why? I f#cked it up the first time? You might ask . Simple the factory glue and the tape that the digitizer will come with are two different things and the tape is a lot easier to get off then the glue. Good luck and patience

When I replaced the digitizer on my evo 3d I remember what a pain getting all the sticky pieces apart was so I just went with the whole replacement screen and glass. Got a white one off ebay for not too much. I'm going to have a frankenstein phone
I did take it into sprint just to see if they would maybe offer me some decent deal. The friendly sales guy tried to talk me into a second line and another phone to get me by for a year while I waited for my next upgrade. riight.
Sprint has always replaced my busted screens for free. Only takes about 20min.
