[Q] Repair tips - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with t-mobile phone repairs.
I seem to have fried the battery circuitry in the phone. I was playing with my phone and noticed it stopped charging when I plug it into the computer. So I turned it off, plugged it into a wall charger, nothing. Then I tried swapping batteries. When I try to turn on the phone, i get an empty battery sign(even with a 80% full battery). So now I got a phone as useful as a brick.
I bought it in August, so it's still under warranty, think t-mobile will fix it? My main problem is that I also have a crack on my screen and I once dropped it in water(then dried with rice), neither problem has killed the phone and it has been working for months since the last adventure. I'm afraid that a cracked screen and/or a tripped wetness sensor will make it look like that's what killed the phone, even though it just died on own
What is the best way to proceed? Should I go to a brick&mortar store? Should I do this online? Try VISA's extended warranty? If they make me pay for a replacement phone, how much is that usually?

Might have 2 fork up 115 situation not sounding to good my boy but I sent in vibe that said att on start up an got away

the best thing for you to do is look on craigslist for a used one you can buy off someone or ebay. once that sensor has turned color and it is evidence that it got wet, all warranty coverage is null and void. don't waste your time with them. as for the store, they don't handle warranty issues.

So there is nope in them giving me a deal on a refurb vibrant[4G]? I'm on prepaid, so no incentive for them I guess.
I really like my vibrant, sad to have it finally die after all these near-death experiences

[Q] Anyone else with a dead phone after 4 months?

Working perfectly yesterday, dead this morning - I received it *exactly* 4 months ago. Put in on to charge last night and the green light was showing as normal this morning, but when I went to use it, well... Nothing. Tried all the usual: battery pull, other battery, connect to computer, get into recovery, jig, etc, etc..nothing apart from a stubbornly dead phone. After speaking to the retailer and to Samsung CS, I dropped it off at a service centre (thankfully there is a small one a mile up the road from where I live). It's on stock ICS but rooted and obviously I couldn't, erm let's say "tidy things up" so fingers crossed that it can be revived without them finding out
I am bit miffed right now to be honest (to put it nicely) as I have never had a phone die on me in the last 15 years. I did keep my S2 though so at least I have a phone to use in the meantime!

unlucky man, I wouldn't worry about the rooting issue, if its dead for you it will be dead for them as long as its not just the battery, they'll probably strip it for parts and bin the rest.
Hi all, overnight my phone is dead. Did with it during night. I can not start it, I can not do anything with it. It is only 4 and some day after purchase. What is going on?

Yeah, I'm *really* hoping it's properly dead... It's most definitely not the battery itself, at least that would have been easy to sort out!
I'm going to pitch in with a last resort tip that I have seen reported to work rarely, and is used also on hard drives.
Seal in plastic bag and in the freezer overnight, sounds ludicrous but always worth a try as a last ditch attempt for those without warranty!
Bought mine 2 weeks ago. Exactly 1 week later woke up stuck to the initial samsung galaxy sIII letters and nothing i'd do would make it past that. Had not rooted or done anything to the phone so i didn't even try anything, went to the store and got it replaced. It did reboot randomly a couple of time during that week.
In the store, they were the very definition of assholes about it, not peacefull at all and i was fully expecting it. They said they were doing me a favor by replacing it (i do know otherwise, according to the law they must replace it within 15-30 days of purchase, even if there's no reason), didn't want to replace the battery or the back cover. I agreed to stay with the back cover because acording to them "was scatched", although i swear to the best of my abilities i could not see anything but a very smooth surface on the back cover, so whatever. I did not agree to not having the battery replaced though. I asked the dude if he could prove my phone wasn't malfunctioning because of the battery and since he couldn't, he had no choice but to replace it after a few phone calls.
This was on a fnac store in Portugal, to whoever knows it. This is the same store that agreed to reimburse my money if i needed to return a laptop when i was buying it but lied to my face telling me they said nothing of the sort when i was actually returning it making me take credit in their stores instead for a value of about 1000 euros. I managed to get my money back through trading credits for money to friends who needed to buy stuff over 1 year but it says a lot about how much of a scumbag they can be.
The only reason i went to them is because they were the only store around on boat with the 30% discount campaign samsung did recently and i took the chance to get the phone 30% cheaper.
Nothing wrong with my new unit ever since.

[Q] Warranty through Verizon, Samsung or Use Insurance

I'm hoping all of you could help me with my dilemma.
My phone currently only charges (90% of the time) through USB connecting to the computer. It also transfers data fine between it and the laptop. It's not charging connected to the wall, which is a problem because that means I only get a trickle USB charge.The phone itself still works beautifully. Initially I thought my best option was to get a warranty claim in through Verizon. I also have insurance through Ensquared.
I started googling what Verizon would do if they denied a claim. Would they send your broken phone back no charge? I had thought that if it got denied for warrantyfor whatever reason I could just claim it under insurance. Turns out they won't and if they find anything to void warranty they'll hit you with a $299 charge for the replacement like new device. I was seeing a lot of people online getting denied warranty due to corrosion on the connection in the MicroUSB port.
This got me thinking. It's been SUPER humid where I live lately and we've had a lot of downpours. Maybe some rain trickled into the USB port and corroded one of the contact points? The water indicator under the battery and on the battery itself have not been tripped, however I've read people getting denied warranty even without the indicators tripping and corrosion on the USB port. I know leaving it in a steamy bathroom 1 to many times could corrode the contact points. I'm going to try and take a picture of the connection to see if I see any green, however it may still be hard for me to tell because I don't know 100% what I'm looking for.
A few other notes: Ensquared covers accidental damage due to liquids. They also send out new phones most times. Verizon sends out a certified like new replacement. I also have a backup garbage phone that'll get me by for a few weeks if needed.
So my question. What would all of you do?
1.) Move forward with my warranty claim through Verizon and hope there is no corrosion that causes me to get a denied warranty and a $299 bill. I have the replacement phone right now, but have called and verified I could send it back in the box if I don't want to replace.
2.) Send my phone to Samsung for warranty. Samsung only repairs the phone and they will also repair defects not covered by warranty and bill back to you. I've read online to replace a corroded USB port (assuming that may be the reason for my odd charging) would cost around $80. I will be without my phone for a week min and possibly a few weeks.
3.) Pay the $75 deductible through my insurance and take the safe approach, however a guaranteed amount out of pocket. I'd be without a phone for 2-4 days. Phone likely would be new, but could be refurb.
I'm leaning towards one of these options and want to see if you guys would agree with what I'm thinking of doing.

Anyone? At this point, I'm thinking of picking up some Deoxit from Radio Shack this afternoon and seeing if that fixes my problem. I'm going to return the CLN phone to Verizon and keep my "broken" one. If the Deoxit doesn't work, then I was leaning on going through insurance to be safe. I'd rather pay $75 and know my final cost, then send my phone back and keep my fingers crossed for a week or more to see if I get slammed with a $300 bill after dishing out $600 for my phone off contract.

I don't believe it's the battery because it works fine and it charges fine when connected to USB. When I had it in the CLN device for the few mins while I was reading up on horror stories about Verizon Warranty, it was charging correctly through the wall charger as well (with my old battery in it). I tried deoxit on it last night twice and let it sit overnight, however it's still not perfect. Seems like a few places it wouldn't charge before would charge every now and then, but still nothing out of a wall charger. It's very odd. In any case, I'm returning the CLN device back to Verizon and will just go through my insurance. It's the safest bet of the 3.
I'm a manager at a verizon store. In all honesty just call them and say what it's doing and let them walk you through their trouble shooting steps. After that wall you through they will decide the best option. Most likely they will replace it for free. That's what I would do. Save yourself an insurance claim till you really need one cause you only get 2.

I went to a Verizon store and they looked at it and tried to get it to charge too. Even a manager looked in the USB port to see if there was anything in there with a magnifier with a light. The problem is, they are not technicians and can't tell me if my warranty claim could be denied. They already ordered me a free replacement. I have it here with me, however I'm hesitant to send a phone I spent $680 on to Verizon for a CLN one that I may have to dish out another $299 for if they find anything wrong with it that I'm not aware of. If they would send my phone back if it was denied because I paid for the phone outright, then that'd be a diff story. They used to do that, now they don't. I'd def send it in if it was the old rules, but now it's just a guessing game until you have a few weeks pass with no extra charge.

Charger port melted!

I was going to wire tether and I plugged it up via the stock USB cable that came with it and all the sudden it started smoking and I unplugged it and my charger port is ruined. So has this happened to anyone? I just had a mouse plugged in the same port and it was working fine! So anyone have this happen to them? Also how can I do warranty? My boot loader is unlocked and says tampered cause I'm running a ROM.

Contacted AT&T. They want me to send it to HTC for them to repair. Wont they notice?? or will they just repair the charger port and send it back?

as long as your issue isnt SOFTware related, theyre supposed to repair fine.
I have heard of stories where they check the bootloader anyway, but sounds totally hardware so go for it.

Well an update. Att took the phone and it took me til the 3rd htc one replacement they sent til I finally got a working one!! Screen issues,etc. Anyway exaxtly a week after the first phone came my entire account of 4 lines got cut off!!! 3 years of paying the bill on time and no problems they marked my account as fraud and the fraud department wouldnt do anything!!! They said it was marked as fraud cause I had two insurance claims in one day on the same line.... so two of my htc ones was insurance replacements even though they were supposed to be warrenty and on top of that I don't even have insurance on any line of my account!!!!! Att got all of there phones back except for the good working replacement. I was forced to open up another account with them as they wouldnt open the other account.. they didnt charge any etfs so all of my lines recent upgrades can now upgrade again

I would be irate if this happened to me, you have no idea. My anger would know no bounds, the puny walls of the ATT store could not contain my rage, all would be lost. I commend your optimism, congrats on your upgrades.
Well store couldnt touch the account. They treated me like a criminal! Only fraud department over the phone could do anything. Which which they wouldnt

Instead of opening another thread about this, I'd thought I'd post here instead. This is all still fresh in my mind as I type this because my micro-USB port also fried on me no more than an hour ago.
Just over an hour ago I went to plug in my HTC One into the same charger I always plug it into every night and the red light indicator did not show up. I thought maybe it was not fully connected so I unplugged it and re-plugged it up close to my face to make sure I was making a proper connection. That is when I smelt something burnt. I quickly removed the cable before any more damage was done but unfortunately it was too late. I tried other cables and they all producing a burnt smell on both the phone end and the charger cable end. I charged my phone just fine to 100% the night before with no issues. I have never had an issue charging any phones in the past and never had an issue charging the phone until today. In fact, my charger is plugged into a surge protector which is even more baffling to me. Anyhow, I was able to pull the cable before any noticeable damage was done to the port but obviously damage was done since it smells burnt and won't charge my phone at all.
I will be taking this phone to ATT tomorrow afternoon after work to get a new phone. I do have insurance on my plan but they had better waive the $120 fee for a new phone and give me a brand new phone because I take immaculate care of my phone and my phone looks like it is in perfect, brand new condition (no scratches or any visible damage). I keep a case on it at all times to prevent damage and I don't mishandle the device. This is alarming to hear that other people have had this issue with an HTC One as well and makes me inclined to think that it maybe more than just a fluke accident like a surge of current.
Has anyone else had this issue with their HTC One? I've never had a phones usb port fry so this is quite new to me and I was wondering how common it is and if it is, is it more common with the HTC One?

Droid DNA Wont Power On

So I have seen several threads on this. Need your guys help.
This is what I had before **** hit the fan.
Droid DNA
Rooted/S-Off/Unlocked
CM 10.2 Nightlies
In working condition when I went to sleep....
So what happen, who knows. I was playing D.O.T before hitting the sack. Battery was at 48% before locking the screen. Thought about charging my phone but decided that my HTC One needed to be charged first. Fast forward 6hrs later, HTC One giving me the green light that its good to go but my Droid is not tuning on. NO CHARGE Light, NO USB CONNETION, NO LIFE. I thought that maybe phone must have died. Bit weird though as it was only 6 hrs and I have never seen any of my phones die in 6hrs and screen off.
I did all of the available troubleshooting as I can think of.
Hold Volume - & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume + & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume +&- / Power Button - 2 mins NO GO
No go... thought maybe system may have been stuck or super deep sleep.
Apparently i dont have warranty with Best Buy. they scammed me, screw them, for another topic... So
Pulled back battery cover...
Unscrewed the screws that hold battery cable. Pulled out and waited 10 min before replugging it back in. NO GO.....
Took apart phone, took MOBO out, USB chip, top chip that hold the SIM, left everything out for about 12hrs, took a break and put everything together NO GO
So I consolidated with some friends and they had some success on their about this matter.....
Connect USB into Computer for 10 min then battery reset by Volume -+ and Power Button for 2 min NO GO
Charged for 12rhs Via Computer and did above NO GO
Charged for 12hrs via Power outlet NO GO
At this point Im leaning towards hard brick but idk how, didnt really do anything last night. Just sat there next to my other phones. No auto updates or anything that would require system reboot of anything of the sort.
At this time I have no charge light, no sign of life, and im about out of options at this time. I would send out to JTAG team to get it fixed but I dont have the cash to send out. My concern is that I recently bought the phone back in July and now Im bummed that it deosnt work. Money well spent but now a brick. Reverted back to my Note 2 and Moto X for the time being but would like to have her back up and running as I personally liked the phone.
Anyone recommend any option that I havet listed above or is there a way I can JTAG the sucker at home?
Also, as you can imagine from the the above, I have no way to adb and try to force something in it if software related....

Sounds like its becoming a normal......
Tell verizon your charger port just stopped working and you tried multiple chargers and it still won't charge until it powered off. They'll replace it.

So called Verizon and told them that my phone has does not turn on at all. they troubleshooted with me on the phone.....
Nothing worked......
They said that they would send one out but I had to ask....
I have a small crack on the screen and that it didn't affect the phones ability to be used right. They said that well they could replace it but if the phone is serviced and they find out that the crack was some how the main reason that it was the problem (Keep in mind this is Verizon we're talking about) they would slap on the the full price of the phone on my bill.....
To my knowledge and experience sounds like the board took a crap and even if the replaced the screen, the board would still need to be changed out. If they say it was the screens fault, I cant say it wasn't it was the board because they'll question why I think that and how would I know, did you open it?
I did save the void sticker and it does show small signs that I was in there but I hate to risk having my account charged at full price for a phone.
Such a dilemma as its a brand new phone besides the crack in the screen. I talked to my coworkers about this and they said I could wait for a DNA to come in as a sale or total lose and try to snag the MOBO but who's to say that phone isn't blacklisted or worse.
All of the phones I have are what I call Frankenstein phones. I work in a shop that repairs cell phones/xboxs/ps3/computers and we pay for broken crap. Most of the time its a screen problem. They dont get insurance and dont take care of their phones so I scrap them and use different parts from other phones to build one. The only phones I eve bought was the DNA, Droid Razr, well most droid serious going back to OG..... just a Droid person.... stick it to IOS and Apple, lol.....
But back to the problem, I could wait for something to come in but again, they usual call VZW and blacklist it and then only good for screen, usb chip, and SIM/earphone jack chip.
What bothers me is that I bought the phone with my own money versus having parts come in and just putting them together so having a brand new toy break hits hard.....
I tried to see if there is any at home JTag is available but all i find is links to send it out to online place that services everyone....
Try a different battery. Maybe in those 6 hours the battery the battery discharged below the "point of no return". No battery, no nothing... Even a super bricked DNA will light the led when charging... But take out the battery and you dont get anything...

I have had similar issues. This has happened to me at least twice with the same dna I have. When I tried to charge it the orange light would not even come on.
My solution was to open it up and unplug the battery. If you have not done this yet you probably should. There are two tiny screws holding it onto the motherboard, take those off and pop the ribbon off the motherboard. After that, put it back together and try to turn it on. Make sure your power button gets lined up correctly. If you need to, check some tutorials on youtube on how to take the dna apart.

i have taken the phone apart already, down to the last bolt and sticker in there. nothing..... I tried a different battery from another DNA, no dice. So I can rule out that battery didnt past it point of no return but also means Im still stuck with a brick phone.....bwaaaaaaaa
To anyone who has this problem
I've repaired my DNA two times for this reason. I've try everything, I've taken it apart completely and reassembled and nothing. I end up buy one with a broken screen to salvage the motherboard and BINGO. Got it back to life. (about a year ago)
The second time I got the same problem and just ordered a salvaged motherboard from EBAY. Got it working back again (this was 3 or 4 months ago).
Today guess what happend again??... It died yet again. Same thing... No life whatsoever.
After this I'm pretty sure this is the same fault over and over again. Just a poor quality motherboard, it just dies after some time. For me it took from 1 year to 3 or 4 months. Every time the only component that I swapped was the mainboard, nothing else.
I'm tired of spending money on a phone that by now I'm sure i'll die again. :crying:
This is very sad because I love this phone too much just to let it collect dust on the bottom of a drawer. It reminds me of my old HD2.
I will probably try and find yet another board for it on EBAY.
I know it's stupid to fix something that will almost inevitably die again. But thats love I guess.....
This is just my personal experience with this issue. Please try every other solutions before you buy a replacement board.

Its sad how common ive seen this issue around the Internet and still no straight forward fix or reason. Just casjy playing some og angry birds and my DNA just decides to turn off. RIP I guess, it was a good run.
My dna died today.
I have not taken it apart yet, but I guess I have tried all the other alternatives.

[Q] Dead Phone, Now What?

So I have come to the conclusion that my phone is totally dead. No lights or any response from pushing or holding any combination of buttons, and the charge indicator doesn't come on. No USB activity either. It just died one day while streaming music.
I have picked up a ZTE Zinger as a stand-in, so not in any rush.
Now what do I do with the One? Looking at repair costs, it seems I could just replace it with a very nice used one for even money.
I wouldn't mind selling on Ebay for repair purposes, but I'm not going to do that without being able to wipe it.
Suggestions?

No garantuee left?
Had exaclty the ame issue, I send it to the HTC repair center and thy replaced the battery. They also placed a new camera so I got rid of the pink problem...
No issues since, very good service...

No warranty of any sort. It just sits on a shelf looking pretty, as in totally mint looking, never dropped. :/
Going to just hang onto it for now in case my son is in need of any pieces if something happens to his M7.
The up side is that for about twice what repairs would have cost, T-Mobile had a perfect condition M8 refurb to sell. It really does take what is great about the M7 and kick it up a notch, plus the SD card slot.
The Zinger is destined to become an IP security webcam.
I'm in the same boat. I assume there's no way to wipe it in this condition?
In that case can't even sell it for parts, though from what I've read you don't want to open it anyway because it's too difficult to do w/o damaging it.
