[Q] Phone turning off by itself - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
Getting kind of worried and irritated at the same time. My phone has recently been turning itself off and it seems the only way I can get it back on is removing the battery and putting it back in. Lock button doesn't work to turn it on. This happened a few days ago when I was sitting by a fire so I thought it might be the heat, but even then, my phone heats up often if I'm playing games etc. it also happened just a moment ago when my phone was just laying on the floor.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Anyone..?
charlimit

And what ROM might you be using? Stock or a custom one? Giving a little info never hurts

Dunno what a lock button is, but when you say the phone turns itself off, are you sure it hasn't just frozen? Next time it happens, press and hold the power button for about 8 seconds. If there is something still alive in the phone it should turn off/reboot without having to remove the battery.
And yes, lots of others have seen this type of behaviour. I have personally seen this freeze, "slow" reboots and "fast" reboots. Lots of threads out there about this type of stuff. I have no idea why it happens. I don't even know if its a hardware or software (app or OS) problem. And I don't think anyone else knows either ...
My phone was returned for replacement 1 week ago and it now appears to have been sent for repair / investigation / lost (take your pick).

I'm on stock rom by the way

I have the same problem. It started a few weeks ago. I had about 4 reboots/shut offs per day.
About one week ago it just stopped.
I haveno idea why it started or stopped.

I am also on stock.
It occured on KE2 and KF3.

i have the same problem right now, at first i believe that because i havent set a lock, maybe my phone turn off in my pocket by accident, but today it happens again just over my desk..... curious????

[Q] Anyone Have Issues With Phone Going Into "Safe Mode"?

Hello,
This has happened to my wifes and my phone numerous times and there is no real pattern to it. I've spoke to "adrynalyne" about it and here is what he said: "The reason why the phone would randomly go into Safe Mode would be false touches being registered on the capacitive keys. I am not trying to sound like a jerk, but aside from cleaning the screens and possibly interference from screen protectors...."
Anyone have any other info on this? Neither phone has a screen protector on them and I'm not sure how to prevent it. It seems to happen a lot more to my wife than mine, my phone is running SC2.8 and hers is running SC2.6 but it's happened on on all previous versions of SC.
Any other info to share? Thanks
-Edit-
Just wanted to add, hers has done it while it's charging and not even being touched.
I don't even know what safe mode is on this phone, I'm not sure I've ever seen it.

It's real, I'll see if the screen shot app will work next time it happens to me.
happened to me just this weekend.. Was out on a hike, using gps to keep track of mileage.. phone was working fine for first 3 or 4 hours but then pulled it out and was somewhat frozen (not cold, just unresponsive). It rebooted itself a few times and both times ended up in safe mode.. Safe mode written across the bottom of the screen with no widgets or cell connectivity.. much like windows safe mode.
I pulled the battery and started back up and it was fine. Would love to hear some more info on this safe mode. Though if it were important I'm sure there'd be mention of it somewhere in the devthreads.

[Q] Galaxy S2 turning off while in my pocket.

Has anyone had the problem that their Galaxy S2 randomly turns itself off when it's in their pocket.
It's happening quite often now, twice today, several times yesterday.
Take the phone out of my pocket and it's got a blackscreen that doesn't respond to being woken.
Holding the power buttons makes it reboot and all is fine again.
At first I thought it was because of the position of the power/wake button being pressed while in my pocket, but I've tried recreating this and it's not easy to do.
I am running Widgetlocker, so not sure if this is causing an issue.
It's an O2 branded phone, not rooted.
Cheers
I had it happen to me once, the first day I got it, but it hasn't happened since.
The only thing I can think of was that the phone was very very warm in my pocket, so I guessed that it might have overheated.
Yes, I did wonder if it was a heat problem. But it would have been sat there doing nothing so shouldn't have got too hot.

Now that's 3 times today. Within 5 minutes of being in my pocket.
Checked it straight away and it wasn't particularly warm.

Hi,
Happened to me few times, its not something very wrong with the phone.. What i did and after that I have no such reboots:
opens the back cover, cleaned the battery contact point (electric points) on battery and phone, put it back tightly, closed the back cover so there is not gap (not even a very small gap) between cover and phone..
after this never have reboots even having the phone in my pocket. hope this helps

Thanks for the tip. I've given it a good clean and put it back together and I'll monitor the situation.

This has never happened to me but hopefully nasgilani's method would work for you

I've seen this happen on other phones. The original Palm Pre needed a foam spacer in the second hardware rev. Maybe a piece of paper or two between the battery and the cover to make better contact. I'm happy saving 30 grams (and a better phone period) but this does chalk up a point to the Sensation build quality.
It's been okay so far today after cleaning the battery contacts and reseating the battery. But it has spent most of the day sat on my desk at work. So hardly a good test.
any update ? mine turned off again today. :-(
Mine has been doing this randomly as well. Its very annoying.

glad to hear that it's not just me. i really hope that it doesn't turn off in the middle of the night otherwise ...
It's been fine now for the last 3 days after cleaning the battery terminals and refitting the battery.
It looks like the battery was losing connection briefly while in my pocket causing it to turn off.

I also have the same issue. It's really hard to replicate the error and some days it doesn't happen. For some guy in this forum it turned out to be a faulty RAM... I hope this isn't the issue for us too!
A good way to check this is by enabling USB debugging, connecting to a pc and run "adb logcat" in the command console... then you wait for the phone to crash and post the logs here, hoping that someone will spot the error for you.

yup mine does too. some days 4 or 5 times some days not at all.
Have you tried giving the battery contacts and clean.
It might also be worth wedging a bit of paper folded up at the top of the battery to slightly increase the pressure on the terminals.
Mine only ever did it while the phone was in my pocket so a bit difficult connecting by usb.

This seems to be a widget locker problem for me. It opens with the home button even when locked does it not?
Just guessing.
Mine happened the last 2 nights, when i wake up I have to switch it on,
I have widget locker.
But i'm gonna uninstall it and see if it resolves it.
I had this going on but in my case I soon figured out that it was overheating from something that I'm guesssing had the phone at 100% although it was idle. Never did figure out what it was as a logcat showed nothing after the fact but that the phone was very hot to the touch if caught just after shutdown. That had been on villian rom which I liked but without being able to see a smoking gun in a logcat and never catching an app or system process running amok I ended up changing roms and the problem was gone. It should be noted that several people have reported doing a system reset and ridding themselves of this problem.

[Q] What made my phone go bonkers last night?

So I was chilling at a local restaurant and tried to use my phone by pressing the power button. Screen came on but it froze and than it began to reboot on its own. It kept transitioning between Sprint 4GLTE screen and HTC quietly brilliant screen back and forth. That went on for about two hours and I could feel my phone getting hotter and hotter. When I came home, I searched the XDA forum for similar issue and was able to factory reset my phone by pressing power + volume down button.
My phone has never been rooted, I don't know how to since it is my first android phone. I have apps, but I am very picky about what I download in my phone. So my question is, what happened? Is this a known issue that happens or is this a sign of something bad happening with my phone? It is working so far, since factory reset, but I am a little uneasy since it happened without any reason.
Probably just didn't agree with the food... Bada cshh..
Wouldn't worry too much, sometimes those things happen out of nowhere. If it keeps happening take it into get an exchange. Doesn't happen to me. I've had 3 EVO LTE's and no boot loops like that at all.
Had a slightly simular issue when I first got my phone and had it in a TPU case. Noticed that for whatever reason my power button would stick. After 5 months, I think the power button is nice and used so it doesn't have the tendency to stick nearly as much.
Not 100% this is your issue but this is what my experience was early on.

Lumia 920 Freezing... Hard

I picked up my first 920 from somewhere other than ATT. It initially had an small issue with its audio where the external sounds were not initially enabled. I did a hard reset to be sure, and both times it was off. Got past that and the phone seemed ok, until I unplugged it and hit the power button and it froze... HARD! No response from any button, or combination of buttons. I returned it and went to got the next one from ATT. This one started out perfectly, had no issue with sound. Then during a call it FROZE. Not as hard as the first one as connecting power and holding the <Volume Down> and <Power> buttons for 2-3 minutes finally rebooted it. That I have similar experiences with two phones says that there may well be something wrong the phone in general, and I am very surprised that I have not found it reported by others here. Have I missed something?

No, I don't think you have. The majority of them have been fine. In fact, mine has been perfect so far. Maybe the place you got yours got a bad batch?

Mine froze while trying to post using board express. It reboted and was fine. Other than that, no lockups since and I'm a heavy user.
I've also been having problems. After heavy use, it becomes very warm and tends to lock up.
I just uploaded a video to YouTube showing this.
http://youtu.be/x0KtZ7VCcTE
I can cause a hard freeze when jumping from bluetooth audio and back when nothing is selected to play. Other than that great phone..
Have this same issue with bluetooth - phone has locked up 4 times in two days. I didn't notice a correlation with nothing selected to play, so I'll check that. Typically I get into my car and the music just starts playing, and when I leave it pauses. Now it'll freeze when I get in and my car will say "Windows Phone operation not supported." After a minute or two (I usually power off the car stereo) the phone will come back with the song queued up at the top (as if I hit the volume). I hope this is addressed by the fix coming out in December.
Other than that the phone has been great - no issues.
Second Returned
I was in the middle of a conversation today and it just stopped. The call didn't drop, the phone just stopped, locked up hard for the second time. I return it and got a replacement (last day I could do it). It concerns me that there has not been more traffic about what seems to be a major issue with the 920

There's loads of complaints about this problem on the Nokia support discussions website, but there isn't a single common cause. Some have SIM card problems while others are blaming specific apps. Whatsapp and Facebook are two examples as well as Nokia Drive + Beta. Others have reported their phones freezing up after using a wireless charger.
Personally, I reckon it's the WP OS isn't at all stable and needs a serious patch.
We bought 2 at once - the one keeps freezing and the other never froze once. Both are using BTooth. However both are randomly rebooting, which I know they are patching.
But I wonder if the freezes and rebooting are related?
Mine hasn't rebooted to my knowledge but it does regularly freeze. It froze again on Friday and now refuses to power back on. I've repeatedly tried the two button and three button resets but the phone won't even vibrate. I've left it on charge using two different charges and tried the wireless charging plate but it's still dead.
Looks like its off to repair then. Not a good few weeks with the 920.
We took the one phone back to have it replaced. ATT obliged because it was within 14 days.
Still freezes. Only happens when on BTooth in the car.
I really hope a software updates this because it is a deal breaker!
Try setting the highest data speed to 3G for a while and let me know if that helps...

Mine freezes overnight when charging it with a wireless charger. every.single.time. Back to the store today as it is clearly defective, new one is already pre-ordered
Guys I have a strange problem with my lumia 920. When I use the phone while it's connected to the wall charger sometimes it's touchscreen becomes unresponsive. When I have to lock and unlock the phone using the power button everything again becomes normal. This happens quite a few times while charging.
Other than the above mentioned problem my phone froze once for which I had to do soft reset.
I want to ask is this happening with me only or others are experiencing it too.
And is there any solution to it??
Thanks in advance.....

Phone keeps randomly shutting down.

It started happening a couple days ago, but I haven't installed anything new, but maybe a few apps may have autoupdated. Anyways last time it happened was about a minute ago so I figured I should probably try and figure out what's going on. I sat down and launched a game. As it was loading my phone shut off. I turned it back on and put a song on and loaded same game again. I started to play and then it shut off again. Earlier today I was listening to music and was started a different game and it shut off. I turned it back on and relaunched the same game while listening to music and it was fine for hours. Any idea what it could be? My battery is also well over 60% so it's not anything to do with low battery.
Thanks.
i recently have this problem, some say that was stock battery problem or the phone is bad reading the battery status and shutdow, i am from Nicaragua and here is hard to find a stock OEM battery so, i try do a fix permission in recovery and the problem was solved , but most users solved the problem by changing its battery
good luck
This problem has come back again and has been increasingly getting annoying. It will now shut off multiple times a day randomly. For example I'll check the time on my phone and it will shut off. I turn it back on and as soon as I unlock the screen it shuts off. After it does this a few times it will work. I would then open facebook or something and be scrolling down and it will just shut off again. I'm running default ics rooted and unlocked. Never had issues before and nothing has really been added. I've disabled a couple things such as advanced task killer and single cpu thing with the hopes that it would help, but it hasn't.
Any idea?
Thanks.
Bump. Anyone?
Welcome to the amaze. Mine started doing it again. Changing to non OEM battery helped for a while but it's back. I'll never touch a ****ing HTC phone again until the day I die and I've only ever used HTC.

Yeah I'm thinking the same. It is so annoying trying to send texts when it would shut down for no damn reason. I am hoping it's an app that is causing the phone to crash, but I haven't installed any recently. I got a new battery a couple months back but I wasn't having the problem then. This battery should be a few months old so I don't expect it to be the problem.
Love HTC. (even though I'm considering am s4 simply for a change of flavor) but HTC cannot make a good battery. They underestimate by a lot.
