[Q] Atrix thinks wired headset button is CONSTANTLY BEING PUSHED - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Music plays fine out of the wired headset...it always has. The headset has functioned properly until about two weeks ago. At that time, my Atrix began to think that I was pressing the headset button. Constantly. Over and over. Any time the screen is on with the headset in, it redials automatically. When the screen is off, it does it too, because when I turn the screen on, it gives me the vlingo vs. voice command box. Also, when I make a call with the headset plugged in, the other person can somehow not hear me at all, until they call me back, and it's fine. The phone thinks the headset button is being pressed once every few seconds. THIS IS INCREDIBLY ANNOYING.
I know it's not the headset, because I've tried three different headsets (two by Motorola, both the 'official' wired headsets of the Atrix, and one third-party), all with the same result. Also, it's not just my phone! Oddly enough, I replaced my Atrix with AT&T's warranty, and THE NEW PHONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.
Has anyone else experienced this, or have the slightest clue what is going on? I've looked around the internet for weeks now and I haven't seen a single instance of it. Pleeeeease. This is brutal.

My headset with mic and button does not have any issues. Its the bose MIE2 mobile phone headset.

Yes I have experienced this as well and it is super annoying I will prob swap it out and hope I don't get another messed up one. Sometimes when I am in my car and connected to my bluetooth handsfree it'll do the same thing and start a song playing and I don't even push anything!!! Hope someone figures this one out.

theres defo something funny about the atrix headphone jack and remote controls.
At first my nexus one remote worked fine with it, but it started doing funny things, then flat out would go crazy (issuing commands without me touching it etc.)
Gave up and went wireless, now I only use wired @ the gyma dn they're just dumb headphones w/out remote

ME TOO!!
Yes, yes, and yes on having this problem. I use my headphones (SkullCandy FMJ) sometimes when riding my bike and yesterday all I kept hearing was "please say a command...did you say...I'm sorry please try again" over and over...hard to deal with at 70MPH!!! Hope this gets fixed, I thought it was my headphones, but it sounds like another GB issue. I don't have any problems when using my SENA SMH10 Bluetooth inside the helmet.

I had this same problem, mine got randomly solved. You could find how the wiring world for the Atrix and block that connection or cut off the controller on the headphone and solder your headphones back together.

Thanks for the feedback, but a)I'm not looking to do any soldering or rewiring (I'm good with software mods, but not hardware mods), and b) it never happened until recently, then I swapped out the phone for a new Atrix, and it happened right off the bat - again with all three headsets. Tried a bluetooth, worked fine, no problem.
I tried a new headset (skull candy something-or-other) and it's been working so far, inexplicably.
I made a voodoo doll of my Atrix and poked it a bunch of times in its little voodoo headphone jack. Seems to have done the trick. I'd recommend that method.

I have this problem too with my headphones from my Sony x1, or x10. I cant remember which one. But as soon as I plug them in the phone goes nuts!
Which really sucks because they are they best headset/ headphones I have ever used for my funny shaped ears.

I think mine fixed after I dropped it and the headphones came out Anyways as long as its resolved that's awesome.

Anyone having the problem using the pure music widget, by any chance? Uninstalled that and hasn't happened since with any headset.

i also started to experience this issues. At first i thought it is kernel or ROM issue but then after multiple test and experiment it is the Atrix 3.5mm headset jack is the culprit. If im not mistaken it is due to pressure contact sensor inside headphone jack. Please anyone know how to rectify this kind of problem do post your solutions for us.TQ

You bike at 70MPH? Holy.

so no one found a real fix or solution for this problem? Maybe we need to make a petition and submit to motorola

I had the same problem with a BB9700. It ended up being a damaged headphone jack. I figure some crap from my pocket had been in the jack when I plugged in the head set. Which jammed everything into it wrecking the receiving end of things.
Luckily I had a spare housing which came with a new jack. I'm not sure if it's as easy to replace on the Atrix since I haven't had the opportunity to tear it apart yet.

Power amp has settings that fix my controls and it works great.

Still no one ever face this kind of problem?

Can anyone confirm that this could fix our problem? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301998

I have same problem too. But I have this problem on stock ROM and CM10.1 (with 3.1 kernel) ROM. I don't have this problem with any other ROM.

[Q] I can't use my regular earphone during calling

I just got my thunderbolt today. However, I can't call to somebody by using regular earphone (if you do, you'll hear the other person's voice but the other person can't hear you). If you use the earphone with mic attached, you can do it. However, I'd like to plug it into my car speaker (AUX cable) so there is no mic attached there. Sometimes, I like listening to music from the car, so when somebody call, I just answer and the voice will come through the car speaker while I use the phone mic to reply. My other phone (HTC HD2 and HTC Tilt) work with this method. The only thunderbolt won't work. Do you have any idea about this?
Thank you very much
ccmks
My last phone did it, but it too was WinMo. May be an OS thing, and not hardware?
It is not OS thing. I ran Android on my HD2 and it worked fine. I have no idea about this problem.
I know that method works just fine on the dinc. I do it all the time with mine. I really hope there is a fiz to that. I loved being able to talk "hand free" while hooked up to the car stereo.

I noticed that too. I dont like it. I was hoping that I was doing something wrong.
yup same problem here and i almost dropped my phone fumbling to take out the headphones before the person hung up. lol i hope they fix it

[Q] Problem with Ear Buds.

Hi Everyone...Question where is the code behind the earbuds? Reason I am asking is that I plug my earbuds in and I can hear just fine but the person on the other end can't hear me. If I set TTY to VCO it works but audio stinks. Is this a Radio/ROM/KErnel issue??? Or do I need to unroot and take it back lol...someone please let me know!!!
Thanks!!!
it can be either or...
i found when using some AOSP roms(mainly older versions of CM7) people had a hard time hearing me.
currently i'm using CM7 1.6.1 and that's not an issue anymore.
In case anyone sees this it was actually a hardware problem, got a replacement phone and used the same ROM/kernel and all worked perfectly...the tech said that the saulder connections on the ear buds goes out easily...

Having a similar issue with ALL types of wired headsets. Posted in the General section and hoping to get some devs attention in it. Did some general Google searching and apparently by manufacturer design (thanks HTC!), when headsets are plugged in (not headphones mind you, diff is if it includes a mic), the mic disables on both the phone and the mic in your chord. You can bypass the disabling of the phone mic by changing the TTY mode but the quality is poor and still does not allow you to use your headset mic.
If you use regular headphones, the phone will show the headphone icon (again, not the headSET icon (with the boom mic in the pic)) and you can still use the mic from the regular phone. The problem I have here is it still requires me to walk around with my phone in the air as if it were on speakerphone.
I'm assuming devs can tweek this and I am 99% positive, previous headsets with my TB did NOT have this problem. I've used a mix of GB, AOSP, and Froyo roms (current), and have NOT found a way to get my headset (with mic built into the chord) to work. Extremely frustrating.

Headphone bug? uneven volume

I plugged my headphones in for the first time today and i realized that the left side was quieter than the right. And I unplugged it and replugged it in and it was fine. Then I tried it again and the left side was lower again. I'm not sure what's causing this or if my tablet is defective. But it seems like a hit or miss on getting even volume from both sides.
Anyone else having this problem or can test it out?
I have te same issue and it happens every time I plug in headphones and its annoying.
For me this only happened when I use my SGS2 headphones on Nook.
Actually, I found that SGS2 headphones only work well on the SGS2. With my laptop they have tons of noise, on nook sometimes I have uneven volume.
Although on SGS2 they have the best sound I've ever heard in headphones..
Have you guys tried other headphones?
I only have the one pair of head phones and they are a generic brand from dollar general and they dont have any issues when i use them with either my pc or psp or phone for that matter

Headphone bug
Yes I too have that problem. Glad to see that it's not just me & mine.
Stupid question - for those having issues, have you tried wiggling or rotating the plug once it is plugged in? Sometimes I find if I have a spot of oxidization on the plug it will cause said uneven volume. It could explain the difference that occurs when you unplug/plug back in.
Another thing to try would be to plug them in when the device is asleep to see if that helps. If there is anything that tries to reduce the "pop" of the sound of plugging in the headphones it *might* affect how they sound after the fact.
Just grasping at straws here based on my experience with other devices.
I was having this problem until I realized I only had my headphones plugged in half way. Don't mean to be a jerk, but have you tried plugging your headphones in just a little further?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
no amount of fiddling with the plug helped me at all still have the issue and its annoying since the speaker isnt loud enough when I am out and about.
Another thing to consider - another issue I've had with certain device/headphone combos is that some headphone jacks either don't have a long enough plug or the plastic jacket of the jack interferes just enough with the plug in the device to affect sound (essentially related to downsay's comment). Try a cheap pair of 'phones from the dollar store with a simple jack and see if the problem persists. If so, perhaps the device is defective...
These are a cheap pair of head phones from dollar general lol.
Edit: Plugging the headphones in while the device was asleep seems to have fixed the issue for me for now. Sound is equal in both cans now
I have tried 4 different earphones, they have been plugged in all the way. Some people have no problem, so I'm beginning to think this is a hardware defect. I'm going to exchange mine and will let you guys know if there is a difference. I'll also try out the display model and see if it suffers from this problem.
Glad to hear you got them to work. Please do let us know how it goes with returning the nook tablet.

I replaced my Nook twice partially due to this issue. Same problem on all three and it's always the left channel that is not connecting properly. I have found that I can get a good connection by plugging the jack in slowly. I think this is more a software issue than a hardware issue.
Yea just exchanged my tablet as well and the same issue is there as well as the one at the store. Plugging in slowly does help. Just before it engages the last click, if you hear both channels you're golden. Hopefully this is a software issue because it seems to be random. Unfortunately the one I exchanged has a creaking case, so now back to exchange again.
I stopped by Radio Shack this afternoon and purchased a $5 female to male 1/4" stereo connector. It seems to have solved the problem. I had similar problem years back with an iPaq PocketPC. Due to the shape of the hole on the iPaq/Nook, the headphone/earphone connector isn't inserting deeply enough.
Another solution would be to use something like a Dremel Mototool and shave away some of the excess material on the headphone/earphone adapter, so it can insert a little bit deeper.

What is everyone testing their audio on? The stock media player? Video (what program)? Is it on every application you try?
I haven't had any issues with audio in games, websites or MX player at all other than a loudish pop when some programs start up, but I'm using a set of Denon stereo headphones (so, good (large/long, gold) headphone plugs on it, jiggling the connection does nothing).

Wired headset problem, need help fast

Hello people, I've recently bought Motorola RAZR, but today I've discovered a serious problem with it. If anyone has ever seen something like it, I would appreciate help right now, as I want to take it back to the store in the morning if I don't solve this, which is a shame, it's a very nice phone.
When I play audio on the wired headset that came with the unit, regardless in which audio player (tried 3 different), YouTube, any sound at all, it comes weak and distorted. To give you some idea, it's much like the sound that you get when you don't plug in your headset all the way, but this one is definitely in place. Here comes the weird part - when I press the button on the headset sound goes back to normal and stays that way as long as I hold the button! Tried with ZTE headset from my other phone, exactly the same thing happens. Sound is also good when I plug in the regular speakers in the jack. Sound is good on built in speakers, no issues there, just with headset.
I've already tried cleaning the audio plug from lint, no change. I've searched the whole of internet, but could not find a similar problem. Please help!

I don't think this will help seeing as the problem appears to be fixed upon pressing the headset button, but have you disabled the media audio effects under the sound settings? By default they are set to on and sound terrible.

GSM RAZR comes with a headset. Instead of an SD card, I suppose. As packed-in headsets go, there's worse out there, but that's not saying much.

I took it to the store this morning, they told me it's probably the wrong headset. They will order one today and I will pick it up after work. Let's see if that solves the issue, the sound on this phone otherwise seems very loud, I will take that as a just compensation for the grainy pentile screen.

One thing I noticed with my headset that came with is, the microphone is on the right ear piece. So I believe they are reversed.
My LG and Samsung both had the mic on the left side.
They gave me another headset, which is kind of weird, microphone is in the middle and there is no markings to show which ear bud is left or right. Press on the button doesn't stop the music, but activates voice commands instead. Headset is also somewhat quieter than the old one, but it at least works.

Bluetooth Issues

I have just recently gotten a rezound about 3 weeks ago and I have noticed issues with my bluetooth. Not all, but most people I talk to on the other end say my voice is muffled and has lots of static. I can't figure out how to remove it. I've attempted turning everything off (wifi, gps,4g) and the static is still there. I've read about some people having issues on vzw site and HTCs site but haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here. I'm am running the latest ICS leak, which has nothing to do with it because the phone did it before I updated the firmware. This is all on a Plantronics M100 that worked flawlessly with my Dinc. If I can't resolve this I may have to return this phone for something else because I HAVE to have a working bluetooth. If anyone has a bluetooth that works great let me know and ill try it to see if I can get one that works. Who knows maybe this bluetooth doesn't like this phone. Anyways, thanks in advance...

I know what you are talking about. I use a samsung hm3500 for videos and audio because it supports A2DP. But it is also just a Bluetooth headset. Probably the coolest one I have found. Great for watching videos without headphones.
(Sorry that was me babbling)
Anyway, yes I have the same issue with the HM3500. People tell me my voice sounds muffled, but when I switch to the phone mic, it sounds much better. I assume it is just a low quality headset? I only paid #10 for it.
I use a jawbone era. It works the same on this phone as it does on my dinc and my charge.
I mean.. I MIGHT be the phone. Call and get a replacement, if its still a problem then get something else I guess.
The best thing to do to check it, is to call yourself and leave yourself a voicemail. Talk with the headset, turn it off and talk with out it. Go back and forth s few Times.
Repeat with the dinc.. compare the quality yourself. It has been my experience that other people are bad at accurately describing problems.

Quick troubleshooting
I have had occasional problems too on my phone, but the wife's does not.
Check how you hold the phone. There is a mic hole on the bottom edge you do not want to cover with a finger, I did. Take off the back cover and check that the mic hole is open, not clogged.
Does the audio input accessed by the keyboard (for voice recognition text input) hear you and work well? If that does not, the phone isn't picking up your voice. You could also try making a voice recording and playing it back to check the quality.
Try a bluetooth headset or car radio handsfree. If those work fine then the problem is likely with the phone/mic. That will involve a replacement.
Ill try the voicemail thing. The problem is with my bluetooth not the phone mic itself. When I switch to that people say I sound much better. I have tried several different ways of holding it with all the same result. I made several phone calls last night and some were land lines. My wife said one time I sounded staticky and the rest of the time it was better. Other calls I made the other people said static as well. I don't know what would cause it to be intermittent like this.

Bluetooth
I would try a different bluetooth set. I use mine with a bluetooth motor cycle helmet head set and it works just fine. Also with a Motorola stereo set sounds good to.
Ok really starting to get pissed at this Rezound. Got another headset to try and....same results. Callers on the other end say I sound extremely loud like my mouth is right on the bluetooth and the audio is very muddled. Why is this all the sudden a problem??? My other bluetooth worked great with my original incredible. If I can get this resolved I'm ditching this phone and getting something else because I NEED bluetooth. Someone please tell me a headset that works for theirs and I will try that one!
