Introduce Yourself - Motorola Photon 4G

Hello, my name is Korey. I am formally known as Whosdaman or WDM. I started at the HTC Vogue and was a very prestigious developer. I then made the switch to Android with the HTC Hero. After sheer disappointment, I then decided to purchase the Samsung Epic. Again after the lack luster software updates provided by Samsung, I decided to switch manufactures again. I have no purchased my Motorola Photon 4G yet, but I am planning on doing so and publicly developing for this device.
My mentor is Kenneth Pennington which many of you may know. He is one of the top chefs on the Atrix and he and I will be working on rooting with device and hopefully unlocking it.
So tell us who you and and a little about yourselves so we can grow as a community together. We all need to stick together in order to accomplish goals as a whole. I will be providing 24/7 support for anything Sprint related. So if you need anything just let me know, for example MSL lookup.

Let me be the first to say welcome and thank you!
We are looking forward to a healthy community; we all know this device is capable of awesomeness - we just need the right people. I hope to eventually help with testing/whatever I can!

Welcome, i hope someone gets to this device because it has so much potential..

Korey? You'll always be Whosdaman to me. Anyway, glad to see ya here. I left the Epic for the 3D, returned it. Bought a used Evo 4g. It had a broken screen, so I purchased a new screen on Ebay. I googled and found how to videos to replace the touch screen, not that hard on the Evo. But after it was back together, the bottom touch buttons wouldn't work. Took it apart, tried again still wouldn't work, so down to the sprint store I go. I told them the whole story. They were great, said they could fix it, for $35. It was late, had to leave it over night. While I was there, played with the photon. I was really impressed! May see about selling the Evo, and upgrading to the Photon when I pick it up in the morning.

Had the evo 3d rooted and it seems like the only way it can come close to the power of the photon is if an aosp rom was thrown on it. Sense just slowed it down so much.

What's up guys, I just won a free photon from sprint yesterday, so I'm really excited to see what it can do! I also have an evo 3d which I'm in love with.... It's gonna be nice to have 2 pimp ass phone's! Since these come with an unlocked bootloader has anybody tried to root via super oneclick or gingerbread?

Saying Hello
OK, Joining the introduction thread.
Name is Tom, in Portland, Oregon. Started on HTC Hero, last phone was Samsung Epic. Not a ROM developer but regularly load the new ROMs on the phones and play with them until I get the one I like for that version, which surprisingly varies on the Epic because the ROMs don't get updated on an even schedule, not that their scheduled. Been a big fan of both ACS & Bonsia, usually using ACS ROMs.
I do have a QE background but have been moved to Database Admin.
Waiting patiently for the first root instructions to come out that work, tried the Atrix & SuperOneClick methods to no avail.

I dumped the Epic today and I'm not the proud owner of a Photon with both docks... Well... OK... my employer is the proud owner, I just get to use it. Going from the Epic to the Photon was a big step for me due to the loss of the physical keyboard but since I realized that 95%+ of the time I never used it I think I can adjust. I thought about waiting for the Within but I think I need a break from Samsung and there are things such as the docks that are more of a plus for me than the ability to record 1080 video. Glad to see you're on board over here. I'm hoping to find time to be more involved over here than I was over in Epicville.

Trying to determine if this is intros only for devs or common folks like myself. If common folks, then here goes, otherwise skip me.
Real name David, location NYC, (sounds like a dating service lol )
Call sign twospirits, as some may know me from other sites that I mod and admin in. Been a member here since 2007 but mostly in the lurking stance (as you can tell by my post count). And that's mainly because I am not a dev. I'm mainly into reading, writing and learning but having fun doing it.
Started with Sprint since 2000 on Touchpoint/LG phones non-smartphones then eventually with Winmo phones Diamond/Pro then jumped onto Android with the Hero, EVO and now Photon. Learned quite a lot but its a never ending process and the stuff that comes out of here is truly amazing. Amazed at the stuff that quite a few devs and their roms on here have produced like MikG and FreshEVO.
I agree with the OP that we can grow as a community together and need to stick together to accomplish goals. And hopefully this can be accomplished without the flaming and arguing shown elsewhere. Being that this section is brand new, maybe we can keep it flame free. I for one will be using that report button alot if it isn't.

While this is bad news for us, how many people are actually going to be able to sit back and not run to the store to purchase this phone the day it is released.
If enough people had the will power to stay away maybe it would send a message to HTC, but I don't think we have that kind of will power. To add to that, I believe the EVO and now the EVO 3d sell extrememly well to people who have no idea what rooting even means and just enjoy the phone for what it is.
I still think we are in the minority when it comes to these things.....So the sales numbers will let HTC know if this has any effect on it but I say the EVO 3d still sells strong.
Won't be for long lol someone will get in and do all sorts of good.

Meh, I've noticed recently that stock seems to perform better than most/all custom ROMs anyway. Perhaps this way I'll spend less time messing around with my phone... As long as I can get partial root to remove bloatware I'll be fine and I'm confident this wont be an issue.
On another note, I think this statement is BS: "It seems HTC has finally caved to what are likely the security demands of wireless carriers with its newest phones, and is locking down its handsets Moto-style..."
It has yet to be confirmed that bootloaders are being locked at the request of carriers. The argument against tethering is invalid because full root is not required to run root access wireless tethering apps. I think this is solely the decision of manufacturers- why they are making this decision, I don't know...

Umm, after news like that, I expct it to be a little uhh echo-y in those forums . Unless someone wants to flex their signed bootloader cracking skills in there.
I am still getting this device day one. If I decide I can't live without full root then I'll return it and wait for something else. Can't lose with Sprint's 30 day satisfaction guarantee.

I agree 100%, but this doesn't change the fact that htc is telling an entire committed of supportive (and vocal) customers to go stick it unnecessarily. While they don't care if they lose my business, I am disappointed in them and will likely end up going with another manufacturer.

If its anything like the droids - you'll eventual have root if theres a exploit but full custom kernels are thrown out the window, so are full custom roms. All you'll have is minor superficial modifications to the official ROM. That means that you'll only taste a new version of Android if HTC/Sprint officially releases it for the 3D. That also means no CM, no MIUI, no ported ROMs.

Unlocked bootloader

So I'm really confused about this unlocked bootloader thing. Do we have one that will consistently work without breaking 4G or not? When I read the threads it isn't clear at all. Coming from an epic i am not familiar with unlocking bootloaders. I assume we need this to install custom roms?
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Right now, unlocking the bootloader does break 4g.
The boot loader has to be unlocked to rewrite some of the partitions.
Alien Rom has a way to get it back - but honestly never read up on how.
Is there something we can do do...like a mass request to Motorola? ?? Request ing they fork over a unlocked bootloader for us to flash....it shouldnt be that hard for them
I believe thats what is really holding back this phone

Hasn't really worked in the past. If they release it they will when they feel like it.
It will take some trial and error and some blood sweat and tears but you can have working 4g on the custom rom of your choice. Not that there are many to choose from. I did it with the alien rom using the guides in the development forum. I felt like it was worth it at the time but honestly didn't even use 4g much because it drains the battery so much faster and the phone gets hot. Wifi works with an unlocked bootloader, and wifi doesn't drain the battery. So now i'm leaving the bootloader unlocked using the Homebase ROM with ext3 and overclocked kernel. It's amazing.

Well this thread definitely answered my question. I was wondering if photon had a nice collection of roms, but I guess the bootloader is not released yet which would be the major reason why developers haven't done anything with this little power house. I had the sensation 4g with tmobile and left tmobile to join the photon lifestyle right before they released the bootloader for the sensation 4g...so I missed the fun there and now I jumped to photon and now I'm on hold for the bootloader again fml. Does anybody have the slightest clue if motorola will be releasing it, cuz if not soon. I might be looking to get the samsung galaxy note, which looks like a monster from outer space with the specs it has. 5.1 inch screen 1.5 dual.core 800x1280 285ppi...omg

That's the million dollar question for us Photon users, isn't it?
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/445861#445861
On the Motorola support forum, one of their employees response to when the Photon's bootloader would be unlocked was, "This isn't solely up to Motorola"
Not that it will hurt, you could go on their support forum and voice your request too. That kind of conduct did prod them to release their source code.
I will get on there and voice it. Thanks they need to release it soon !!!!!!!!!! im pulling out what little hair i have. lmao

A 5.3 (not 5.1) inch mini-tablet with a stylus is just too big to carry as a phone for me - but a cool device! And probably available sometime late next year.
It is pushing it isnt it? lol. well i think thats the bigest im willing to go, a made a full scale print out down to the last mm. buy looking at the specs and im a graphics designer so i put the print out in my hand with a HD7 behind it to get a feel and it wasnt to bad to be honest. it ways the same as a hd7 (with a ruber protector) but since i do graphics i think thats whats swaying me towards it, so can proof print quality pdfs on the go, for work.

For me - I love the phone. Only thing I'd change would be placement of the USB port relative to the kickstand.
I've rooted it to remove bloatware, but don't know that there's anything that I want it do to that requires a custom ROM. Customizations, yes - but launchers, widgets and apps can do what I want.
I was in the same place with my EVO 3D. Stock was fine.
ROMs were necessary in the WinMo days (and perhaps the early Android days, though I missed those). I spent a LOT of time cooking kitchens for my WinMo phones.
There will always be people who like to cook ROMs as a hobby, but I knew that the Moto Photon would NOT be one of the target platform for them - will be mostly HTC phones, I imagine.
Well unlike my evo shift I'm happy with the phone the way it is. The evo shift was boring unless rooted and running a custom rom.
I love this phone and i'm satisfied with just root. Best phone I've ever owned. It just seems like there were a lot more people in this forum last month.

The inferior Samsung is the new shiny.
I also spent more time here and AC a month ago, but really don't have much more to say, or problems that need solved. I'm spending my time now customizing it and try out new apps.
Enjoy it!
Love this phone but its too complicated to unlock boot loader and such so people lost interest in the forums, not the phone in my opinion. I came from the Nexus S 4G and don't see a reason to lose 4g for a rom its great as it is running launcher pro. Just my 2 cents.

Photon was a great phone, its great with root alone. I now got the sgs2 and gave the MoPho to my gf. She loves it coming from an HTC Aria. I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader, I tried but it looked too risky. I was pretty much satisfied with stock and my own build prop tweaks, there was no need to unlock. I do recommend to phone to people who aren't as tech savvy for just being a good dependable fast phone.
The sgs2 is no way inferior to the photon, every day use they run about the same, the photon does have better battery life and video recording, the sgs2 has a bigger screen and an unlocked bootloader.

CPU is only one component in comparing phones, and IMHO not in the top 3 criteria. Screen, battery, radio signal, construction quality, vendor support all more important than minor (in the real world) CPU differences.
I won't get into any more bashing - will just say glad you like your phone; enjoy it!
I think my Photon is the best Android phone i've ever owned and I've had a few over the past couple of months, including the SGSII. The SGSII is a great phone but just too thin for me, so when on a flat surface my manley fingers couldn't quite grasp it right and i ended up dropping it. The Photon just feels perfect, build quality is great, just ticks all the boxes for me and I'm gonna stick with it for a while

Phone is great out of the box, not much to complain about on forums nor are people in a rush to slap a ROM on it like they would need to so their Samsung works correctly.
I came from the tmobile vibrant. At one point I had a choice of 65 custom roms and 11 kernels. I wanted unlimited data and more minutes and sprint was the only choice. I got the epic but took it back the day this phone dropped on the market. I like htc but 3d had some drawbacks. Mainly signal quality. I would like more roms, but mainly overclock kernels. I am learning to make my own themes and that will probably satisfy me. I hope development picks up, but if it doesn't I won't be upset. This is a wonderful phone and works right out of the box. I don't get 4g on my end of town and probably never will, and I could really care less.
It's good to see people are still here and they are satisfied with their phones. This is probably the best phone Sprint has to offer right now. It sucks that it was released sandwiched between the 3vo and sgsII.

Photon 4g Or Atrix 4g OR SGS II

some one will tell me that which is best please ... i like photon 4g is this phone good or just.....
Atrix isn't on Sprint that's AT&T, SGSII is good if you want a million roms, buncha dev support, and custom themes and all that stuff. But if you want a phone that is a phone, and works as such, with a couple really awesome Devs the Photon is the way to go.
What it comes down to is do you want a phone that is a phone and damn good at it or do you want a phone that is so so but you can tweak? I vote Photon myself. Just my two cents.
Yes, I also vote photon. I owned Atrix before going for photon. Photon is better than Atrix on radio & heat(never over 40 degree even playing games). Sgs II is so plasticity & don't like the graphic.

If you are simply using a phone. Just like web, gaming, watching movies go with photon. Other wise you r playing with different roms go sgs2 good luck

I own an Atrix and just got the Epic Touch 4g from Sprint yesterday, my buddy has a Photon I've rooted for him. Out of the 3 my Atrix seems the most trouble free (but its been out the longest) but if you're thinking about going to Sprint the Photon is the way to go, signal strength and battery life on the Photon has been amazing. My Epic Touch will probably go back to Sprint, Samsung just can't get it right.

This man has the best statement ive read in a long while! a former atrix user, now ET4G user, and he says to pick up a photon. id shake your hand all day, lol
I had some usage of friend's atrix and now I owned the photon. We both are not from USA, i cant say anything about the signal.
Atrix has a lot of fixes already and several good firmwares, not so much like photon, but some awesome developers are working here and make it much better. I would vote for buying photon, I have very good feelings about using it. Actually was iphone 4 user before, but if compare with atrix, I would suggest photon.

I would definitely get the photon, I have had it a month now and theres been 3 updates already. This is the best phone i've ever used, no need to put roms on it, it's great just like it is.
Motorola packs some good radios in their devices, his Photon will pickup a full 4g signal inside while the Samsung is still chasing it's tail looking for any signal at all. 3G on outlying areas acts the same, no service with Samsung and enough bars to browse the web on the Photon. I'm a smartphone junkie and I admit the Photon blows me away. The Samsung is faster and smoother but not by an insane amount.

I don't think the E4GT even have cm7 booting yet! ... Photon if you into the quality.. Sgs2 if you want the looks!

If Sprint, get the Photon. If AT&T, the Atrix 2 should be out shortly.
i just want play games and application thats i don want the custom roms ...and themes
and some one will tell me that every andorid software and games will work on photon 4g????????
Then get the Photon not the Epic Touch. And most of the apps work I think. Haven't run into any issues.

I forgot how to change the resolution for some apps that don't fit the home screen. Could someone refresh me?
If you're with at&t wait for the atrix 2
If you want TW and a good looking screen go with the Epic (2 offshore hehe)
If you want a fast stock phone that gets it right out of the box get the photon
Just gotta spite me don't ya? Lol.
haha yea well, thought you typed sprite me
I had no idea what was going on for a good 6 seconds
I needed a soda! Get with the program!

Well, I can add this as someone who had an ET4G and took it back, the Photon is one rock solid device. I've been running it about a week and a half now and I'm totally satisfied w/ the situation.
As for games...Tegra Zone brother. Built for this processor specifically and some of the best games available. Shadowgun is looking promising, though I don't really game, so WTF would I know.
Also, the Photon should be able to readily handle any app coming out for at least a year I would imagine, so you're covered there.
And just in case someone on the fence reads this who *is* interested in ROMS, I can't say enough about the devs working on this device. They are few, but their persistence and dedication is top tier. On the bar shelves of life, they are beside the Johnny Walker Blue. Loki, mrine and shabby have done so much work and above that (in my opinion) are highly interactive with the users giving feedback/asking questions which makes me look foward to each new development even more. I learn something new, even if small, almost everyday that I check up on the forums. I love that. Plus I don't care for over animated, convaluted neon puke themed ROMs w/ illegible font and acore FCs shatting all over my communcations device. That's me. YMMV.

[Q] Question about Sprint's new line up...

Hello all thanks for stopping by. I have recently moved and settled to a new area and I bought my wife's and my phone straight out so we can switch at any time (or kill the contract if we moved outta the country). My android phones thus far have been the htc hero, lg optimus s, and the evo 3D. I got the evo 3d last june because I thought that it'd be like the original (tons of support, the next big thing, a crap ton of of mods). Little did I know that they would keep a lot of the drivers closed sourced and we as a community would have a few fantastic deves but would also run devs away (not just talking about the kernel devs over the past year quite a few have dropped by then been bashed and left). So my big question to everyone and indeed what I am pondering is.... Jump to a SIII as HTC and Sprint abandoned us or give HTC another shot? Both phones will have the same processor but im worried about samsung's build quality ...however I dont want htc to get my money blindly .... or i can just wait...? I dunno ...lol what is everyone else's thoughts?

Ya know what? Screw HTC!!! I only got the 3d cuz I knew, or at least thought, it would be getting ics. Turns out, now I'm in the us on Sprint mind u, that I really don't think that's going to happen anymore and I'm not going to sit around and wait. Yeah I could've downgraded hboot and rooted but I just thought intentionally bricking my device was absolutely foolish and didn't trust it. So I got the gsII and within min was running a fully rooted Sprint ics leak so easily my 3 yr.old could've done it! And with the size of this screen, the super amoled display, and speed, and boy do I mean speed of.this device, I will never, ever, buy another HTC device again! Just my two cents lol!

How's the GPS on the gsII? I've never seen any Samsung with decent GPS or signal.

Sprint is the issue. They are the final step before ICS is released. Follow the order: Google releases Android to the manufacturer > HTC tweaks it an adds Sense > HTC sends to carrier. HTC is not necessarily the blame here. There is a few threads dedicated to the speculation of the ICS release. IMO, it's still coming, but, just from the timing of things, they most likely delayed it so as not to conflict with the release of their new flagship, EVO 4G LTE (pushing more people to upgrade to that).
With the amount of reading and diving in to other forums because people ask me about their phones or I have actually rooted their phones, I prefer HTC phones regardless of the Evo 3D's lack of official ICS ROM (even though there is a VM leak and three ports available for it, one of those ports is a fully functional HTC Sense 3.5, which is what I am running) and the HBOOT 1.5 [email protected] (even though it's also mentioned that having HBOOT 1.5, rooted, S-ON and recovery 4EXT is the way to go).
I prefer the Sense interface. It's my preference. I love the ease of rooting (in most circumstances). I've had my experience of rooting a Samsung Captivate. It was eh. It was easy to root, but, when it came to custom stuff, just eh.

GPS works fine. My wife prefers Samsungs and has the GSII. We've used her GPS several times around Savannah, GA and locally where we live and around Atlanta with no issue. Actually performed better than my Evo 3D at times.
It's more about what you like. I've had the hero, og evo, and now 3d. I still have a epic 4g I got for Christmas and my experience wasn't all that great with it until cm came along. I despise touchwiz although its getting better. Sense does make HTC phones run a little slower cause its a resource hog, but I just love sense. I suggest looking at both and deciding on what you are more comfortable with. Both the s3 and evo lte are great

HTC or Samsung GIII
I'd have to, IMO, that the HTC is worth staying with HTC. I too thought about switching over to the SGIII but in the end, I'm going to stick it out with HTC, as the EVO 3D was my first HTC device and I will say I'm a little disappointed with their support of the device. I'll give them another chance with the EVO 4G LTE and see what happens. After all, I plan on being a smart phone user for way more than the standard 2 yr contract and will switch devices in the future if need be.
HTC has great devices and I can't stand hearing "3d will not get ics"
It's been confirmed. There are processes that have to be done before it will be out. I have seen new phones coming out with ics yes, but how many older devices have gotten officially updated yet. My buddy with T-Mobile who still hasn't seen his update. People just don't have any patience. If your on xda u have the ability to run ics. Either do it or wait.

Um t-mobile gsII just got ics last night and where and when did Sprint Ever say the 3d was getting ics? I've been scouring the Web for months waiting for word and have never seen or heard Sprint officially say this. Correct me if I'm wrong.
