[Q] I'm just completely lost with ROM's. Yes, I searched, forever. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Atrix on stock Gingerbread (I updated via OTA, the same for any previous updates.)
I rooted using the preinstall method, it worked fine.
Here are my questions:
I want to flash a custom ROM. Maybe Ninja. Is this possible when I updated OTA instead of flashing with an unlocked bootloader?
What are the steps required for flashing and still keeping all my data? I'm concerned about application data, camera roll, sms (I use Go-SMS), etc.
Is there a way I can make a "mirror" backup with all my data, so I can recover from it once flashing? (Is this nandroid?)
Once flashing a ROM, would flashing another rom or updating to a newer version require me to wipe my data and start over again?
I know ROM Manager recently supported the Atrix. Should this be my application of choice for CWM?
Pretty much, I want to flash a custom ROM and get all my **** back lol. I also want to be able to upgrade in the future while still keeping my data.
Sorry for being a n00b, this is my first android phone, and I'm loving it so far.
Thanks guys!

You must unlock bootloader if you want custom ROMs.
If you updated to 2.3.4 OTA flashing pudding sbf will semi hard brick your phone. But it's ok. You can recover by repeating the fastboot commands in the Pudding thread instructions. Or just follow instructions here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there on you will need to flash unlocked CWM recovery.
From there on flashing custom roms is the easiest thing ever.

Do we go from step 1, even though it says to go to 13 when you're on 2.3?

Nope. You need to start at step 1.
Make sure to install the drivers before doing RSD flash. x64 windows drivers here.
And to download the correct version of pudding for your phone from here:

So wait, the phone somewhat bricks and then needs to be recovered if we updated via OTA?
(Flashing pudding atleast)

It's really just an extra step, don't think of it as bricking. You'll likely get a 0x1000 failed to boot. Then you go abck into fastboot mode and re run the oem unlock commands.
As for data, you gotta buy titanium backup pro (free is fine, but then you have to manually ok each app you restore). Use this to back up your Apps.
Then I use my back up pro to back up my texts, mms, other stuff.
back up, install rom, restore.

Hmmmm ok, thanks!
Downloading those two to backup now.
I'm wondering if I should just wait for CM7 or not now haha.

You will still to have to do it after CM7 gets released. Better do it now and get it out of the way while you have the urge.
I am sure once you unlock, you won't be able to resist the temptation of trying custom roms

Just wanted to say, I followed all steps to the letter and unlocked my bootloader with no problems at all. So not everybody gets the 0x0001 type erorrs, either way though as they've stated, you can recover from it with fastboot so it's all good

backup using titanium.
unlock using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 which is safer than sbf.
use rom manager to flash CWM. then do a nandroid backup (to create mirror image).
flash new rom (follow a guide)
restore apps using titanium.

[Q] Restoring Froyo Apps

I'm trying to restore my Froyo app backups, i.e. Email 2.2.2, News 2.2.2, etc with Titanium Backup but have encountered a problem. They won't restore! The only reason I want to restore them is I'm under the impression when I update to Gingerbread (once it's avaiable on Bell) it won't let me update since I don't have some core apps installed. Please help!
The icon in the right of those apps, is an explanation mark in a triangle?
No it's actually a red happy face.
It's just Email 2.2.2, Weather 2.2.2 and News 2.2.2 that I backed up and un-installed. Now when I try and restore just those 3 the restore pop up screen goes on forever. Do I even need to reinstall these in order to update to Gingerbread successfully? Thanks.
Sorry for bumping, but I'm a little worried I won't be able to update to Gingerbread when the time comes...
Hmmm...
The think you can do is, ask for another Bell user here, upload the 3 apks you want, and
using Root Explorer or any other exlporer with root access,
or adb using your computer
move these apps to system/app
You unistalled them because they were bloatware, right?
You shouldn't unistall them. You should freeze them, and now restore them back.
But, what i suggest is:
Unlock your Bootloader,
install the Unlocked CWM
and download and install(using cwm zips) an International Version of 2.3.4 from now.
But READ very carefully the android dev section, so you wont get hard-brick!
If i helped, hit thanks!
I suggest back up your data and what not and flash a fresh stock build (either fruit cake or sbf)
Yeah I thought they were bloatware so I uninstalled them. I'll freeze next time. Can I just "Factory Data reset" after backing up all my essential apps? I really don't understand the process of flashing and updating to Gingerbread and whatnot and I'm a little scared to brick my phone too.

The only thing you have to afraid, is some SBF's, when you unlock you bootloader..(If the dont remove some code of Bootloader, in SBF's, and then you downgrade from 2.3 to 2.2, you get hard-brick!)
So, i suggest you, instead of waiting the 3 apk's,
wait for a more stable and international support for a rom(like, i m waiting Alien Rom),
and then flash it using CWM..
If you read here, you can easily unlock your Bootloader, but this can void your guarantee.
Since you are unlocked, then never use RDS lite, to flash SBF's, and flash roms in CWM which is easy and safe!
I' m not pushing you. Just recommending!
My guarantee is already voided, since i m since unlocked, and the half-earth away from USA
So unlocking my phone is the only risky part? And after I unlock my phone I should never update with the official releases again? Also, unlocking my phone only gives me the ability to flash roms, kernels etc in the future when a more stable Bell 2.34 rom comes out, it doesn't change anything with my phone as is right now except I void my warranty? Basically unlocking doesn't give me Gingerbread or anything for that matter, it only allows me to install it afterwards? You can probably tell I'm very new to all this so thank you for being so patient and helpful.

[Q] OTA Issues -OR- Restore System Apps with Titanium Backup?

I think I may have messed myself up in regards to the new OTA for the Rezound. Here is the story...
My phone is currently unlocked and perm-rooted enough to use Titanium Backup on a regular basis.
Not thinking, I backed up and uninstalled some system apps (bloat) using Titanium Backup in December:
Backup Assistant
Mobile Hotspot
Mobile IM
Mobile Instant Messenger
My phone downloaded the OTA last night and attempted to install. It gets about 1/4 of the way through and stops (picture of a phone and <!> ). I have to battery pull to get it to restart. The only error message I get is: "Update Failed, Code 410"
I have tried multiple times to run the OTA and get the same result each time.
The only thing I can think is that the OTA will not install because there are system apps missing (Mobile Hotspot specifically).
I have been unsuccessful in restoring the apps via Titanium Backup. It just hangs and doesn't actually do anything.
Is there anything else I can try? Did I permanently mess things up by uninstalling those system apps? Is there other issues I may be missing?
I'm open to ideas...
if i remember correctly, it won't update if the bootloader is unlocked. all you may need to do is "relock" it. Search for "OTA" or "update" and "bootloader" and you may get some info.
or wait for someone with a better memory than i
just noticed mine tried to force the update... for anyone who hasn't updated in some capacity, looks like it will auto-update Feb 5
i do believe you need to install stock recovery for the update to install.
best bet is to install a stock rom that someone has already rooted, deodexed, etc.
You don't need to relock the bootloader. You need to unfreeze any software, or reinstall it if removed. You also need to install stock recovery.
Requirements to take the ota:
- stock os
- stock recovery
- all stock programs not frozen or uninstalled
Things that don't seem to matter:
- rooted
- unlocked bootloader
Use OTA Rootkeeper if you wish to preserve root through the OTA(make sure to use it to make the backup first)

This is exactly what I was looking for! I.am running stock, rooted with apps frozen.
I can easily unfreeze the ones with titanium back up.

I did everything in that thread, but still got the red triangle with the exclaimation mark...
Thanks for the tips everyone...
I'm still running the stock os and recovery, but I am missing the apps I listed above:
Backup Assistant
Mobile Hotspot
Mobile IM
Mobile Instant Messenger
Problem is, that I uninstalled them using Titanium Backup (I know now that I should have frozen them).
I will try re-locking the bootloader and seeing if it will let me run the OTA. If not, is there a way to force Titanium Backup to re-install those system apps? I have been unsuccessful so far.
Looks like this is not my lucky day...
I relocked the bootloader using the instructions on HTCdev and tried the update again. Same issue as before. It gets about 1/4 of the way through and stops.
While I was trying this all out, it got me thinking... Could this be due to the perm-root? Titanium backup still shows that it has root access even though my phone is relocked.

As much effort as you are expending trying to get an OTA update for GB, why don't you just use a custom ROM, like CleanROM ICS. At least for me I get better performance and battery life to boot.
Yea... A custom rom has crossed my mind quite a few times. For this OTA, I'm more interested in the firmware included (radio, etc) to maybe fix this earphone static I have. If we had S-Off, I could just flash the radio and then use a custom rom.
Con put out a Rom that updates the radio and I believe the hboot too

You do need to be back to stock so maybe there's something you missed since you were rooted?
You can relock and then run the RUU to get you there and then accept the OTA and it should work. Then just unlock again and flash Amon Ra, and then either run stock or restore a nand or flash a new ROM. If you go with an older ROM without the new kernel and you want to use the new kernel you might need to update that. You can do that by following this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467793
ATERNATIVE METHOD:
You can also use con247's Stock OTA ROM instead of running the RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21880389
Here are the steps to take to accomplish that:
1) use Amon Ra to flash con's vigorStock OTA ROM. It will do its thing then reboot to hboot. I think it then asks you if you want to update. Don't do it yet.
2) At this point you want to relock. So go into fastboot on the phone. Using adb/fastboot type the following at the cmd prompt:
fastboot oem lock
3) Reboot phone and let it flash the PHzip file. It should reboot completely when it's finished.
4) delete the PHzip file using a file explorer app like ES File Explorer or Root Explorer.
5) get the phone back into fastboot. Unlock again using adb/fastboot. I don't remember the exact command but you can find that in the guide for unlocking.
6) reinstall su using Amon Ra.
Now you should be stock OTA rooted with the new goodies.
Check in Settings > About phone > Software info > More to see that you got all the new stuff.
Thanks for the help everyone.
I ended up just flashing the new RUU using the exe found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472606
I didn't mind setting up my phone again, and everything seems to be working fine.
I am going to try to hold out rooting until the ICS OTA update comes out (whenever that might be) so that I can avoid this same issue... We'll see how long that lasts.

Question about Tenfar's recovery

I just got the the new 2.3.6 OTA update by following directions here:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/update-atrix-2-to-android-2-3-6-ota-with-root-retained/
Got my root back and I am extremely HAPPY!
I also think i have been extremely lucky (and cautious) not to have encountered any problems. The only mod I have is ROOT.
If the install Tenfar's recovery (or his touch recovery) and do a backup of my current rom, will I encounter any problems installing the new ICS update when it becomes available? or are there any other downsides to it?
I think doing a recovery backup at this point is a good idea, I just want to be sure I will not cause any future update issues.
I am a NOOB. Thanks for any advice.

Do not, repeat DO NOT install tenfar's Recovery.... it is a dinosaur. Use Rom Racers or Rom Manager.

having the recovery installed or making a backup would not have an impact on the ota update. Being rooted, unlocked and/or running a non stock rom could be a factor. Good idea to have nandroid b/u! git'r'dun!

OK great. All I want to do is keep my root - and I am not interested in any custom ROMS. I do not want to unlock my Atrix. All I want is a (nandroid) backup just in case my Atrix has a mishap.
Which is the BETTER route to take: ROM Manager or Rom Racer's?? I don't mind paying for ROM Manager. I just want the safest surest easiest full backup without messing up the future OTA ICS update.
The reason I ask is I thought you had to be unlocked in order to install CWM backup with ROM Manager.
thanks again

[Q] [Solved] Backup ICS, then upgrade to JB

Hello,
I have an LG Optimus L9 and I'm on Ice Cream Sandwich right now, the stock firmware that was there when I bought the phone. Now what I want to do, is backup the current ROM in its full state, then upgrade to Jelly Bean via the OTA updater from LG.
Then I want to return to my previously backed up ROM whenever I'll want to, and get the same state of ICS that I had before upgrading.
Is it even possible? I don't mind if I have to root it.
Thanks in advance.
Everything you mentioned is possible, but there's still trade-offs:
1) if you want EVERYTHING to be the same as now (ICS), including radio, u-boot, and x-boot, then you can always using fastboot to flash the u-boot, and x-boot, and then using offline flashing KDZ to restore STOCK ICS (with root) and then use ClockworkMod ROM Manager to Recovery your current backup;
2) I personally don't see the need for you to have radio, u-boot, and x-boot to come back to it's current state: JB radio, u/x-boot works fine with ICS ROM. So the simple thing to do for you is:
a) ROOT your current ICS
b) install ClockworkMod ROM Manager
c) backup (using CWM)
d) update to JB (keep root and CWM)
e) restore the backup from step c whenever you prefer

Yeah, I guess if keeping it in the same state is too complicated, restoring to the factory ICS would be fine too.
I'm still wondering though, if I do your process mentioned at step 2 above, will I get my bootloader unlocked? I'm a newbie in that kind of stuff, but I've seen articles mentioning something, that you can only unlock the bootloader when being on Jelly Bean.
Thanks again.
Voodoo rootkeeper is needed for you to retain root via ota. Or you can riot again if it's no problem.

It's possible but rooting L9 ICS is not an easy one-click process. If you want to try, take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465.
For what you want to do you should
1. Try to offline flash your current stock rom first. This make sure that you familair with offline flash and you can flash stock rom back if rooting process go wrong. Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
This process don't delete your data if you do it right.
2. Get modified .bin file for your rom if any. If there're no modified .bin for your rom, you must make one. It require editing binary file with hex editor. There're some thread about this somewhere in the forum.
3. Root your phone with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465. Almost same process as offline flash but you need to add some stuff to your phone and replace some files while flashing kdz.

No you won't get your bootloader unlocked. It is true that only official P760 JB supports bootloader-unlocking, but that is an option, not a necessity (which you can deal later if you want to).
Also artit is right that ROOT ICS is not one-click process. I followed cmahendra's excellent tutorial and get things done on first try, but things differ for different person.
Root for JB
If you don't want to do the complicated root method for ICS then just wait until you upgrade to jelly bean and then go here. ICS was a bit difficult to root but once you do it then you can get it done with your eyes closed. Cmahendra has a great tutorial along with Lelus method it's great! Good luck!!

Yeah, I guess it's not that hard, I'll try to do it. It's similar to the method for flashing an LG KM900 which I had before (non Android). I'll try it and report here.
I hope I can find a KDZ matching by current firmware, though.

Okay, so I managed to root ICS and install the recovery then backup my firmware.
Although when I installed the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and made a temporary unroot, I immediately went to the Software Update option on my phone. It downloaded the update and rebooted. Then soon after a while I got an error "Err:0x13e", then it rebooted back into Android and said something like "unexpected error occured while upgrading" (not precise message).
I'm stuck at this point. What should I do now? Has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks.
So are you saying your phone is dead or what? Did it reboot and die? More details please. And you weren't suppose to make a temp unroot, you were suppose to protect root.

No, it's not dead. It throws an error "Err:0x13e" during the "Upgrading Firmware" stage, then it fails and reboots back to Android.
I tried everything in Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, it still didn't work.

The reason i't snot working is because of the custom recovery. you have to delete cwm so that the upgrade can boot to original recovery and upgrade your phone. Be sure to get into Voodoo and protect root. That will be important after you upgrade.
After the upgrade go into google play and install Voodoo then recover root.

Thanks, I see now. Though I decided to flash a Jelly Bean KDZ instead, then do a factory restore. Both my root and CWM were gone, so I rooted again using the LGPwn method, which worked just fine. Afterwards, I installed the same recovery I had on ICS, and now everything is working fine.
I guess I don't have any more questions regarding my topic.

[Q] How to update Original Rooted 4.0.3 Incredible 4g

I have an Incredible 4g on Verizon that I acquired during the first week of release. I was fortunate enough to get it unlocked during the time when HTC allowed it from their site. I unlocked the phone, installed TWRP, and rooted my device (I'm not entirely sure how I did this).
It's been over a year now, and my phone is kind of sluggish. How can I go about updating this phone to the latest software? I'd settle for the latest OTA from Verizon, as long as I can keep it rooted.
I'm also willing to flash one of the other kernels, but I dont really have any experience flashing CM or Viper.
So what's the best way to go about doing this? How do you update an already rooted phone? Ideally I'd like to keep all apps/data during the update. Any information or links for how to update appreciated!
My phones details:
Android 4.0.3
HTC Sense 4.0
Software: 1.43.605.3.710RD
HTC SDK API: 4.11
it probably won't even install unless you return to stock recovery.
another poster already confirmed losing root after installing the update.
imo - the update is not worth it anyway. they other thread lists the changes... nothing significant.
if your phone is sluggish either find out what is causing it (app, etc), tweak performance using your root, or wipe it and start clean. i would not give up an unlocked, rooted device for this update.

Is this just for stock updates, or for Viper/VM mods as well? I'm willing to step up to 4.3 or 4.4 with one of these custom ROMs, assuming I can keep root.
Is this a complicated process to install one of these custom ROMs (anything special since my phone is so "old")?
Will I have to wipe and install from scratch as well?
You can always clear your cache and davek cache to help improve speeds.

Installing a fresh/new ROM is very easy, and it will indeed require reinstalling apps. However, Look at getting Titanium Backup Root - I highly recommend the Pro version - you can back up all of your apps and data. Once performing a full TiB backup to your external SD card, you can wipe and install a fresh ROM, then restore any/all apps and data backed up with TiB. The app will pick up right where you backed it up, settings and all. You may need to re-set up a few apps (such as email settings).
If you like sense, I recommend ViperLTE. It's very close to stock Sense, but offers several great tweaks you can choose to use (or not). Installing it is easy if you have TWRP recovery installed. If you don't have TRWP installed, look at mdmower's thread for that recovery. I also highly recommend performing a full Nandroid backup to your external SD card before doing anything.

it probably won't even install unless you return to stock recovery.
another poster already confirmed losing root after installing the update.
imo - the update is not worth it anyway. they other thread lists the changes... nothing significant.
if your phone is sluggish either find out what is causing it (app, etc), tweak performance using your root, or wipe it and start clean. i would not give up an unlocked, rooted device for this update.

Very true... I, too, lost root after OTA update. I've tried every method I could find to attempt to unlock bootloader now with update... even tried wipe and flash of stock RUU 2.17.605.2: unable to go back to older version due to updated bootloader (wouldn't let me load it).
It'd be nice if HTCdev simply updated for a .bin that'll work... I tried flashing unlock_code.bin from previous experiences... but wouldn't work either. Any rumors of a new method to unlock the new bootloader?
