[Q] Has anybody figured out the ebook reader included? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm totally confused. The app is there, but I'm not seeing a store. Just a way to import. I did notice there is a section to add store. Still confused.
It looks like it is the Aldiko reader that is included and I found a press release on their site saying it was included on the GT, but I would think I'd be able to browse their store.

On my "Books" app on the top right is a link "Shop" Clicking on that brought up the media page of the Android Marketplace. You then accept the Terms and Conditions and off you go.
Oh, sorry, you are referring to the ereader app. Click on add store. For the URL I entered "market.android.com/books". You can enter any other specific ebook seller URL you want.

[Q] Reader app recommendations?

So, I'm really tired of the stock reader on my MN 1.2 NC.
Tried the Moon+, but having to dig through the directory to find what I want to read is a PITA. When I finally find my book, it looks great when it's open.
Spam me with your favorite reading apps!
I read more books on Aldiko than anything. One of the best, IMO. Then there's the obvious others: nook app, google reader, Kindle.
PDF Readers: Adobe Reader (For picture heavy books, or books that have been "scanned in") and Ezpdf Reader.
After testing most of the readers available, I personally chose Aldiko.
In Russia fb2 is the most popular e-books format. So, Cool Reader of FBreader only.
I use Aldiko and Kindle. With Aldiko, You can read drm protected BN books. If you hate searching, You can download them from your account on the computer, then throw them in a folder.
Cheers.
~Leko
---DlEdit, I also use Moon+ they are great for annotating. But, no DRM.
Moon+
I personally use mostly moon+ but have aldiko and fb reader too.
In moon+ you do not have to look for files. If your book files are in one folder (\books) in the lower right corner of moon reader in quite a small character there is "import". You hit that and it will import all books from selected directory to moon. Then you just need to go to your shelf... and scroll through the titles .
I also recommend calibre for conversion on your pc (pdf to epub etc.)

Agreed. Was using FB reader, but it had very few options to change it's appearance. Aldiko emulates the stock NC "look" plus tweaks. The only thing I can't figure out is when I "import" all my books stored on my SD card to it, they still don't show up under shelf view.
Laputa, Aldiko, Google Books--> for their free libraries
Cool Reader---> to open just about any ebook
vuDroid---> for reading picture heavy .pdfs (my job involves a lot of pattern recognition)
I've been using FBreader and been happy. I'll have to try the others.
I prefer FBreader as well. It's default look for actual reading was the best one I could find.
I do like the other's cover views, but I spend more time reading than looking at the covers.
+1 for FBReader,
aldiko i found to be too slow to open with a large epub library, and it didnt seem to keep my place in a book very well when closing and re-opening the app.

Odd. I go to Aldiko's Home menu, select SD Card, browse to any ePub, then press+hold the filename until menu pops up, select Import. The titles then show up on my shelf.
My only beef is that Aldiko makes a complete folder copy of every imported title, so I end up with two copies of every book on the SD card itself.
Aldiko's reading interface options are fantastic though!

That's what I did, basically, only you can select each one along the left side too (checkmark appears) & then "import to Aldiko", and a progressbar appears as they are transported. But I never see them in shelf view, only the one I've opened once before, & am currently reading. No dealbreaker, just strange...the cool reading interface makes up for this.

Ahhh, I know what's wrong. There's a sneaky dropdown selector in the upper-right of the shelf that allows you to select different views. Click on it and change it from "recent reads" to "books by author".
Just like you, I missed that option when I first started using Aldiko myself.
I don't know why the darn app defaults to "recent reads"... Forgot all about that! lol
haha..MUCH better! Thanks for the tip.

Moon+ reader pro is simply the best reader app on the market right now.
I don't think you understand all its capabilities.
You can easily import a whole directory of book files into moon+ reader. So it shows on the bookshelf.
You simply go to first tab (the file browse screen), you find the folder that contains all your books. Long press on folder name, do "select", then click to open the folder, you should see a bunch of smaller toolbar icons on the bottom of the screen. If you want to select all books found in that folder, click on "select" button, you will see all the book files getting selected, click on "import" button.
It will prompt you for category (optional). That is for when you want to create individual category of books (for which this bunch of selected book files should be filed under), such as cooking, or romance fiction.
Once you done that, go back to home screen, click on third tab (where the bookshelf is). On the top shelf, you would only see books you opened recently (it's called the recent book shelf), if you click on "All books" in middle of that screen, you would then see a list of categories you created (when you imported in previous step), if you haven't enter any category during import process, you simply see a list of all the books you've imported. Click on category to open all the books imported under this category.
Moon+ reader is very flexible program, they don't do a great job at explaining to people how to use it.
If you think my instruction is good, click thank me button.
Hope that helps.

Did you try preader Native? I tried another preader version and wasn't happy. Then I found com.mhwsoft.preader-native_0.9.9_all.ipk at

prereader on the market was the best I could find and it was junk. I'll have to check that out.
Anybody figure out how to side load into the Kindle app?
Ya, tried that but it wasn't loading my .epub book when I added it to the library.
yep, that beta/alpha version of preader is best. Its still total junk but at least its free....really though, at the point that its that awfully inefficient the guy is probably better off trying to generate html and just toss it to WebKit. I mean come on, so slow and buggy with the progress.
I'm using the kindle app on mine. Barebones but works.
I ended up buying the Touchpad Demo version from RadioShack, not realizing that it would not allow me to access the HP Market. As such, I can't download the Kindle app from there. Anyone know how I can get it to my Touchpad? I think the apps for Wed OS are .ipk, as opposed to android's .apk's. Does anyone have the Kindle.ipk?
P.S. I don't think this qualifies as asking for freeware in violation of the rules as the Kindle App is free on the market, and I just need the installation file to be able to use it. If that is incorrect, mods please remove this request. Thanks.
UPDATE:
Never mind, thanks to some of the guys here at XDA I was able to install a clean copy of the latest Web OS on my "Demo" Tablet, and register for a new Web OS account. A Demo no more, but a full fledged Web OS Tablet. I downloaded the Kindle app from the market, but now trying to figure out how to get .mobi books to show up on the Kindle App.

There is some info on this at precentral.net in the TouchPad subforum. You might take a gander as it sounds like the demo units were not supposed to be sold and may be permanently locked out of accessing the app store.

Is there an shook reader for webos that i can just load all of my epub files into?
Droid Charge/Gummy 1.9RC2 2.3.4 ext4
Well you can just download a free amazon book, and rename your mobi books to the /.palmkindle directory, but they show up as the name of the amazon book, and I'm pretty sure its impossible to change that because the name of the book is in the main database file for webos. More technical details can be found here
Is there anything like Aldiko for WebOS.
This isn't a real satisfactory solution. I whonder how HP could sell the Touchbook without a working ebook reader preinstalled. I guess its things like these, that made people refrain from WebOS.

I use my touchpad for viewing my digital textbooks (.PDF) in class. I'm currently using adobe reader but it lags considerably. I've tried using calibre to convert them to .mobi but it didn't work.
so I'm looking for one as well..
Managed to pick up a cheap 32GB... So disappointed about the lack of a half-decent book reader, and the Kindle app doesn't seem to be available to people in the UK
I had this same problem. I tried pReader, but the version in the market took forever to load even one .mobi ebook, and froze when I tried to load a second.
The Alpha version from the preware store refused to load .mobi files at all for me - it let me select them, and said it was loading, but they never appeared in the list.
I ended up using Calibre to convert all of my ebooks to .epub, and loading these into the Alpha version of pReader - it loaded all of them (about 200) quickly, and they look OK. It is still a bit laggy and rough around the edges, but its good enough for me until someone comes up with something better (or the pReader devs release an update).
How do you get back to the main menu in the preader native version? Im stuck inside one of the books and cant get out.
edit: Nevermind I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I think by putting it into fulllscreen I couldnt get into the drop-down to go back. So... DO NOT PUT INTO FULLSCREEN IN DISPLAY PREFERENCES!!!
Also, if you are using pReader and haven't done this already, try setting the encoding to UTF-8.
I had all of the special characters showing up as junk before this.
Good luck.

PS - If anyone is aware of a way to sideload books into the Kindle app without the free book hack, please let me know.

This took me a bit to figure out, but I did. I double-tapped toward the top half of the screen and it pulled the top menu bar back up. Similar to the bottom, where if you tap, it activates or deactivates the progress bar. What a pain in the ass and rather unintuitive if you don't know what you're doing.

[Q] Need App For PDF Sheet Music Set Lists

Hey guys... I am looking for an app for my Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I can use to build a set list for sheet music. I have friends that do this on ipads but haven't come across anything for Android tabs. All my sheet music are scanned or created PDF documents so really I just need an app that I can build a "playlist" of sorts from a database or a folder full of PDFs. It would be nice if this app indexed the PDFs so it would be easier to find the songs that I am looking for. In the end, I want to be able to flip from PDF to the next PDF within the app in the order that I setup.
Any suggestions?
Maybe just use a file manager like Astro?

I have that but it doesn't give me what I need. I need to preset the playlist of PDF files and then easily click through them as I move from one song to the next. With Astro, it would take way too long between songs to find the right PDF file and open it between songs.

Just prefix the pdfs with its number in the set list, and then just use and regular file manager to open the pdfs in order.

02-ice ice baby.pdf
Etc.

Try adobe reader, and click "home", you will be able to see your docs order how you want it.
Astro, Adobe Reader and all these other suggestions are great for finding a file and opening it but I really need something like I said... a reader that can create a "set list" or a playlist or sorts. I have almost 1000 pdf files. It just wouldn't work no matter how you sort them to be able to switch from one song to the next quickly during a concert. I need something that I can add the 5 or so songs to a list and just be able to click "next song" or something like that when I am ready to go to the next pdf.
I don't think i have come across anything that would do that on Android as far as being able to create a file list to go through. The closest thing i can think of is to use perfect viewer with its pdf plugin but with that you would have to do your own file management externally by placing your set of files in a folder and naming them sequentially with number prefixes. Once you do that though perfect viewer will let you cycle through the pages as if the set of files were pages in an ebook.

QuickOffice Pro HD

Hi all, don't know if this is a question or just a statement, leaning towards the latter:
Has anyone noticed that this device may come with a reader built in? I saw that you could launch with Adobe Reader, but when clicking around in Dropbox, suddenly I was able to use the QuickOffice Pro HD app to view things. I understand why this device would need this app, but when looking in Google Play, it doesn't seem to show up as purchased (and it's kind of confirmed in device with the fact that you cannot launch the app independently).
Another thought: I've only tested with PDFs launched from dropbox, that may be the reason. Maybe this is another reason to use dropbox? Unsure, but very curious feature, may affect how people would treat device (especially since I cannot zoom in and out of standard Adobe Reader, which is driving me nuts).
Back to studying for midterm in 8 hours, any thoughts? :fingers-crossed:
I also noticed this when using Google drive. I opened a .doc file and it used quick office to display the file (in read only mode). As you, I don't have quick office installed.

Not that this helps much but I just opened a file n dropbox and they gave me the choice of what program to use and quick office was on the list and it worked great. I didn't download it either.
Google bought QuickOffice and probably working to implement it fully into the Android maybe. That is interesting it doesn't show up anywhere else. I love using Quick office HD in my Infinity and is my go to productivity software.
QuckOffice was acquired by Google a while back....
http://www.quickoffice.com/google_acquires_quickoffice/
So it may be a part of the OS install, it doesn't show in the app drawer but it shows under apps/all in the system menu.
This is great news. Work is buying me an N10 so I will need something that can edit Office documents. I was considering buying Quickoffice.
I noticed this when I tried to backup QuickOffice Pro in Titanium Backup.

What happened to Moon Reader??

My favorite reader app has suddenly disappeared from the play store. Does anyone know what happened to it? I just bought the pro version not too long ago and now it's completely gone (except the plugin for it, oddly enough).
For that matter...does anyone have any suggestion for the "next best thing"?

Not sure why it's no longer on play store, looks like you can download from their website or other app stores http://moondownload.com/download.html
The author posted info on his website (and emailed me back for that matter) this status:
A nasty thing happened, Moon+ Reader and Moon+ Reader Pro have been removed from Google Play because a request email from a Russia company "litres.ru" to Google Play team, Google didn't make any investigation and confirmation, they just removed my reader from the Play directly.
The only reason from litres.ru is, after several steps, a user can download books from my reader, they own the copyright of some books. (the orginal text in Russian: Электронные книги популярных авторов. Например, книги Дарьи Донцовой. Также доступно приложение, в котором по умолчанию встроены пиратские сайты. Бесплатные книги доступны в два клика. )
My opinions:
1. the reader can access OPDS web sites just like that a web browser can access html web sites with standard protocol, if they think any book site has problem, they should contact the web server provider to stop the services, a web browser can't know if a web site is illegal.
2. if they think there is a url link in my reader that a user can access a book site which they think it has problem, they can contact me to remove the link, like remove dynamic links from a web browser, all the additional opds URLs in the reader are provided by our warm-heart users, the reader hasn't any book site servies by itself, it only works like a web browser.
-
The litres has its own reader app in Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.litres.android, it's an unfair play.
I still get no reply from Google, the last message I got from litres is "I will use my personal contacts in Google to speed up the recovery process, but now the speed of recovery process depends only on Google (unfortunately it's Friday now).", another very bad message is a comment from another user "Google will return your program to the market in about a month after recieving their letter. That's the procedure."
-
I'm a weak personal developer, I devote myself to this project for years; I and my family live on the revenue from the reader only, here I thank so many warm-heart users, you help me to improve the product, it gets 5,000,000-10,000,000 downloads in Google Play today, and has up to 40 locale languages support, I'm proud for you.
It'll be appreciated if anyone could help me, for anything related to this matter, accuse this type of thing, or contact google for someone who may be helpful to speed up the recovery of my application.
Regards
Seany
Cool Reader developer wrote here habrahabr.ru/post/168003/
"The reason - the ability to download books from pirate sites.
LitRes agree to withdraw the complaint, if the author embed "black list" directory OPDS, so that even the user can not manually add the pirate catalog.
Yesterday I received a letter from LitRes the same requirement as the author of the reading room Cool Reader. Otherwise, threaten to complain to Google, citing the example of Moon + Reader.

We (users of MR+) are supporting him as best as we can. I made the matter public here in Germany (at AndroidPIT.DE) first on Friday (immediately after it happened), and with more details as they became clear (see: Moon+ Reader kicked off the market -- dev needs help! and Litres abuses playstore regulations to get rid of competitors.
There are some things we can do, like e.g. making the issue public in as many places as accessible to us, in buying the app at his website (Paypal), in reporting the litres app to Google as abusing the playstore.
And yes, we should do these things. As the CoolReader author wrote: "Who's next?" Google should ASAP re-instate MR+ in the Playstore, and ban the Litres dev for abusing it. Otherwise it might become common practise to hit competitiors this way.
Jeez what a **** up. Google just removes them as a matter of policy, it is true. My guess is it is a self-protective measure in order to shield from any lawsuits but whatever.
It takes one DMCA complaint and an app is GONE, no investigation or corraboration needed. And I hate to say it, but it can take multiple months to return, and sometimes app publishers have to publish under a totally different account and signature before the whole thing is done.
This is a very easy way to put a single dev out of business permanently.
I succeeded in downloading and installing the APK file from their web site. However, when I try to load the Colordict dictionary file, it says my device "is not compatible". I'm rumming CM7 on a Nook Color and have installed the dictionary in Moon+ Reader many times. Is my problem related to this Play Store withdrawel issue. If so, is there a work around. There are lots of words I don't know
