There is a thread thatwas just created saying it is unlocked for voice butnot data...i didnt understand much of it and may have interpreted it wrong

SIM card Slot can be used overseas!
I spoke to Sprint International services , they mentioned that I could use a local carrier SIM for voice and data as long as I used a 128 k sim card , also and obviously they dont guarantee quality of service of the local carrier !
Will update next week , when I hopefully will use a local SIM overseas...

128 k sim card. interesting.
yes, please keep us updated, i would like to know how it goes.

oh dang
is it ganna work abored ?? like out side us ?? with other sim card
do i need to unlock for that or not ??
Are you sure it is BAD?
Sometimes the phones are still attached to an old line, and they need the original account holder to call Sprint and free it up. If you are not sure, you should contact the seller and find out.
If it is really bad (i.e. someone did not pay the bills) your only option is to sell on CL or such with a "flash to cricket or Metro only" tag line.

I will sell u a brand new photon !

One thing you can do is wait it out the restrictions will lift on the phone once the account is in collections and sell to a third party but there's no telling how long that takes.

I can guarantee you it will work with a foreign sim, yet it will only do so outside the country, .
I have a movistar sim from Mexico , but it only works outside the U.S
If you still have the phone try selling it I would love to buy it off you I do a lot of travel and a spare is always a must ,

Yea but foreign sims still have to connect through US domestic networks. Movistar might have a thing with AT&T and when u try to join, it registers as an at&t sim/network and wont work
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
It's the is towers that are blocked not the sim card.... if you have an att or T-Mobile sim it will work fine just not in the USA. In short until the radio is fixed, no gsm in the USA

[Q] Is Photon 4G CDMA or GSM?

Hi, id like to know if the Photon 4G is CDMA or GSM with a Sim Card Slot? because im about to buy one from amazon and id like to know if it is one or both and how to recognize which one is it
It is both, it uses the sim for GSM and uses CDMA without the sim. You cant use a domestic sim for GSM, for now atleast.

Meaning you can't take a sim card from AT&T or another GSM provider within the US and plug it into Photon and expect it to work. Its locked out for GSM in the US. It works internationally though.
The 4g is Wimax !!!

LOL I totally had that typed out ready to post before I reread and saw that he meant the phone and not specifically the 4g. Unless I just misinterpreted that completely lol, which would make it the second time

I have just bought an unlocked Sprint unit from ebay, hoping to use the GSM slot for my primary pre-paid line in Nigeria, and the CDMA slot for one of the CDMA providers in Nigeria as well. I plan to take the unit to be programmed into a CDMA network in Nigeria; that will cost me about US$50. Meanwhile, I successfully rooted and flashed ParanoidROM JB, but I saw that it showed no GSM signal at all with the JB ROM, so I restored the original GB 2.3.5 Nandroid backup. There seems to be very little documentation on how the dual system works. Will I be able to use both the CDMA and GSM together, in a dual-standby fashion, in Nigeria?
I flashed the KDDI radio and cm10 and have used my MoPho on T-Mobile.
Don't forget to thank all who help!

GSM?

So I've been reading on these forums that some roms don't have gsm working. Can someone explain what gsm is and what it does? Sorry for noob question.

gsm = signal
without it there is no calls or texts
Or in other words, no calls or texting.
Ok thanks guys.

"Global System for Mobile Communications"
This technology uses a small SIM card to contain the mobile phone details such as your phone number & etc. This allows one to swap the SIM card into another phone and have it simply work. The SIM card can also store a limited number of phone numbers. The technology is used everywhere in the world, but only on AT&T and T-Mobile in America.

Not sure to understand since I'm not in those carrier and I can swap my SIM card into any other phone and it will still work. I'm in Canada and this works for any carrier for all I know. The SIM also contains phone numbers and can hold a bunch of SMS.

I forgot about the SMS storage. Your SIM card can be put into any other GSM phone. It could not be put into a Verizon phone, for example.

It should you might have to get a sim card that's international and a good Rom that works well with gsm networks if I'm not mistaking most other country's are gsm

isnt global mode in settings for going other places then the usa? doesnt global mode auto pick service after buying a sim card for czech republic cell services? im sure you can buy a prepaid service.
Depending on frequencies used then yes all the above should work in gsm based countries. At a minimum you'll have voice SMS and evdo data.

save yourself some trouble and call verizon BEFORE you go. They'll need to flip a (free) switch on your account to allow roaming on GSM networks.

That isn't necessary. And will give you a crap ton of roaming charges. International roaming ain't cheap.
Just pop a sim in from the Czech Republic and you'll be good to go.

Ok, so I dont have to do anything other than remove the verizon sim and place a local sim card? Will my Verizon sim still be active once I put back in or does it go dead for not being active that long? Do I need to rom my phone with GSM rom to do this?
Hi guys,
Just to let you know, I'm from Portugal and have the HTC DNA. Fully operational both stock and custom firmware. Everything works fine except LTE. Just need to create a new APN setting for the new SIM card.

Depends if you want to roam and keep your number when travelling abroad. I prefer to do it that way. My point is, if you plan on sticking with roaming on your Verizon sim, you need to have them enable gsm roaming on your account (cdma roaming works fine, where avaialable). I learned the hard way.

Ok cool guys, thanks, so do any of you know of a good carrier in Czech? I will be in Ostrava (Northeast part of the Country) I just need data for skype and gps.

Sim card in my note 3

Hi guys,
I went to best buy today and got my note 3. When I got home I found there's a sim card already put in the sim card slot. I am puzzled, last time I see this was on my touch pro 2, and I was told by sprint customer service representative that the sim card in my touch pro 2 was actually a gsm sim card for the purpose of international roaming. That makes sense, so I bought that story.
When I look at this sim card in my note 3, I'm wondering what is it used for? Since I believe sprint note 3 uses embedded sim card to store cdma+lte keys I suppose this actual sim card in the slot is not used for that purpose. Could it also be a sim card used for international roaming? Or is it the case that the embedded sim card stores cdma keys and this actual sim card stores lte keys, like verizon phones?
Thanks for any input that could clarify this.
Cheers
Listen... I work for sprint .. that sim card is for international use .. How it works is .. If you have the phone active on your line for more then 90 days then call in to the international department and tell them u want unlock the SimCard . Then u can use the sim or take it out and use a sim card from another country

So this is just like the old days, a free useless international gsm sim card coming along with a new phone. Thanks trabent, you helped a lot clarifying my confusion.
The sim is also used for LTE on sprint.

It can be unlocked on day one. There is no 90 waiting. If it hasn't been on your account for 90 days they call you to ask you a few questions then unlock it. Put the unlock request in one day one then they called me back the next day to unlock it.
