Photon display stinks. - Motorola Photon 4G

I went to the sprint store all psyched to finally make the jump to android and pick up a Photon. I went over to take a look at it and couldn't have been more disappointed. Not only was the UI god awful (I was willing to overlook this in expectation of new roms), but the display is simply the worst i've ever seen on a phone. It pixelizes everything. Everything looks annoyingly blocky.
Just a word of caution to those who are planning on buying the thing mail order. Do yourself a favor and find some way to see it person before you fork over your cash.

To save battery and for display purposes, stock setting for brightness is 1/2 way, go into settings and turn it up. looks great!

Not sure what phone you looked at but my photon display is on par with my old samsung epic (and vibrant when I was with T-Mobile)..this screen is brighter, clear, and not heavily contrasted like my samsung phones although it looks to have a slight blue tint?...the colors are pretty realistic and it is definitely not pixelated and blocky. Maybe you looked at the cheap Moto phone?

I keep mine turned all the way down. I don't understand the complaints about the screen. But maybe I should have my glasses updated. Lol

Matter of opinion. I checked the Photon and 3d out and thought the photon was much better. As far as blur vs sense I would and did replace then both with a custom launcher because they both suck. Vanilla is the only way to go and moto is closer to that than htc.

Just came over from an NS4G (30 day exchange), and for me the NS4G was easier on the eyes with better colors and clarity but the Photons added .3 screen makes up for it and its brightness makes it far easier to see in sunlight than anything else I've tried. Always a trade off and there's no question that the Pentile screen improves battery life.
I'm fairy new to android but found goLauncher has everything I need for the NS4G and the Photon.

If you like sense 3.0 look in the market for sbp shell. It's expensive, but similar to sense 3.0

I'm in love with the display. I barely noticed the pixelization. Screen is way brighter than any other qhd I've seen. I came from a vibrant then to epic and now to photon and I would have to say this phone is as close to brightness and color display to samoled than any other sprint device. I love it and have no regrets. Also on the upside I could never root this phone or flash roms and I would still be satisfied.

I'd say: absolutely. If you're looking for a new phone, do NOT take what you read in the forums to heart. The Photon screen does use a different technology, PenTile, that some very vocal people tend to dislike while many others either don't see the difference or don't care about it, and that at the same time offers significant advantages in power utilization, brightness, and outdoor visibility.
So, yes, go check the screen out for yourself before discounting this phone. My guess is that the vast majority of people will like it for its brightness, power efficiency, outstanding colors, and visibility in direct sunlight, and won't notice the pixelation at all.

after having a evo 4g (12 months) then a evo 3D (30 days of use) i see NO big difference, and really think some people have really nothing better to do with thier time other then critize something they don't own (like the OP), or people who want to make sure they pick on "what ever" about a new phone so they can say to THEMSELVES the phone they had purchased earlier is better.

to each his own i guess...i came from a evo to a evo 3d then to this and i must admit that the evo 4g screen was slightly sharper, the photon screen is far from blocky...unless ur like 3 inches away from the screen, u can't notice.
i find it funny so may people are bashing this screen but praising the super amoled screens which in the most part, use the same sub pixel design. every amoled screen ive seen looks exactly identical to the photon pentile screen.
all it took was one person to say something negative for everyone to jump on the bandwagon of hate.
i like the photon screen, looks good to me. yea little pixelated here and there but its a phone....

They screen looks decent not up to Samsung standards I compared with my vibrant an it was ok a little pixelated I think others notice it more then average user

I finally saw the "screen door" effect yesterday that I've heard people talk about and it was when I was watching a YouTube video for Party Rock Anthem but when I messed with the screen brightness I was able to pretty much make it go away. I've compared the screen side by side with my Epic and with the brightness set high on both of them I really didn't see much of an issue with the Photon. I'm blown away with the performance and versatility of the Photon otherwise. I've got the car dock and the desktop dock and both make the features of the phone outstanding. I will probably be picking up another dock so I can have one at home and one at the office.

I do love amoled displays myself. So i could understand not likeing the photons display. Having a 4.3inch screen isnt enough anymore.

To all those experiencing issues with the PenTile display, what is your display brightness set to?
While toying with a display model, the screendoor effect was extremely obvious to me. The brightness setting was 100%. I changed it to auto-adjust and that reduced the screendoor effect greatly. At that point, it was barely noticeable and only if I really searched for it.
Making that change made the Pentile display usable for me. To those seeing similar issues, try that out and report back if it does or does not work for you.

The pentile display is awful. Any colored straight line like the battery display will show noticeable pixels.
There is a reason samsung left pentile and samoled+ is an actual selling point.

You know the funny thing about your comment... is that did you know that Samsung OWNS Pentile? They bought them and their tech back in 2007.
Yeah, I think Samsung really hates them a lot too... uh huh...

My brother has the photon and I think the display is pretty decent. I'm not going to say it's amazing or better then my old epic but it is not as bad as people here are saying. I think some folks jumped in expecting a galaxy type display and were disappointed when it wasn't. That's my opinion anyways.

Epic touch or Motorola photon

So i have an epic touch 4g , and i was thinking of picking up the photon tomorrow because the epic is f***ing massive and plastic. But the samoled is beautiful and it is smooth as butter.
So I figured i would ask some owners of the device for some honest thoughts on if it would be a good switch .
Thanks

I can't tell *much* of a difference between my photon screen and my epic screen. Choice is yours in the end, but ultimately I couldn't give Samsung more money after the fail in terms of software and support of the Epic.

Well, I have had the Epic 4g and I do REALLY miss the Super AMOLED screen because it is brighter and a bit clearer than my Photon screen. I have not looked at the Epic Touch in person, however, I have been getting AT LEAST a full day with moderate to heavy use before I have to plug in my Photon. I don't know how your battery is lasting you on that, but I am not disappointed with my Photon AT ALL!
The best thing I can suggest is go to either google and check the specs of each phone, or I go to www.phonescoop.com to find the specs of the phones that I look at getting.
In the end it is up to you and what you want your phone to do.
Good luck.
I love my Photon. But there is no right phone for everyone. What it comes down to is what works for you. I thought that i would want to switch to the epic touch, but i am really happy with the Photon. It has the best signal I have had with Sprint. I use the internet alot, and with other phones there were places that it was to slow to use. The Photon doesn't have the development that other phones have, but a phone must be a phone first in my opinion.

The samoled+ is gorgeous but it feels big and cheap.
The photon handles better in hand but im concerned ghost blur will make my phone lag out like crazy like the atrix .
Also the fact they use the pentile display.

Well, I had an Epic Touch 4G for two weeks, and returned it. Not because I wasn't happy, I loved the device, but because the money was better used buying credits and working towards graduation.
That being said, the Epic 4G had great battery life for me, although it seems some on the forums have had an issue with this. I could easily get through a 12 hour work day and arrive home with 40% of my battery left and that's on moderate usage.
The radios on the ET worked pretty well for me also. Again, some people on the forums have reported otherwise. All in all, very comparable to the Epic before it. However, the device was quick to drop 4G at times.
The screen...well, it's great. I don't have the expectation that the Photon screen is in anyway going to compare, but, then again, I hear the ET's radios don't compare to those found on the Photon.
The ET is smooth as butter, it has some really cool features packed in, like a Font Switcher, that really should have been addressed by the Vanilla OS by now, in my opinion. Call quality was exceptional and all in all I don't expect the Photon to really outclass the ET in anyway.
Those are my honest interpretations of one side of that coin. Give me another two weeks, and I shall complete my thoughts.
I agree with sgtmedeiros on the signal aspect as well. The Samsung Epic 4g I had maintained good signal strength, but this phone can hold on to signal even better than the Epic could ever. A phone should be a phone first in my book as well, and what phone is a true phone if it cannot keep a decent cell signal?
If you have the money and wanna try it, then go for it. I do not believe you will be disappointed.
I'll make it real simple:
If your into rooting, modding, flashing ROMs and what the newest of the new, keep the ET4g
If your fine with stock w/root and just want a powerful, high quality and the most reliable android phone on sprint, get the photon.
I had the Nexus S before the Photon and I always had terrible signal and dropped calls. No matter how nice the screen is, I need a phone first and foremost. Plus the Photon's screen with the brightness turned all the way up isn't so bad.

True. And that's how I feel. Plus I'm excited to get back to the legendary build quality of Moto.
I've read so much praising the radio of this phone, are any of your data speeds actually faster?
Both phones are to a point where custom Roms aren't even necessary any more unless there are cool little things to add in that carriers took out.
The main issue for me will be the screen because the samoled+ is so color rich. But then again the photon is sharper.

just say no to samsung. you will be happier
Epic touch does not record video in stereo, but has 1080p, photon does, but only in 720p.
Both are excellent phones. You cannot go wrong with EITHER phone so it really just comes down to what YOU prefer. I currently have the Epic 4G Touch and did have a Photon for a month. Both phones have pros and cons. The Photon has a better radio. You get a stronger signal by far but honestly have not had any issues with the Samsung as far as getting a signal when I need it. The Photon has well documented issues with no audio on calls and random reboots. I am staying with the Samsung because I like the look and feel plus how slim it is.
I will say that more people have commented on the phone than with any other phone I have ever owned.
I personally have both phones and even though the e4gt is a really nice device and they did a nice job with the new touch wiz, and the screen colors and camera ate great I find that overall I like my photon better. The feel in my hand, Tegra zone, radio strength and speed and I do like the photon screen while not as great as the amoled plus the higher resolution is what does it for me. I do also use the webtop dock and dedicated car dock and those accesories really trend to seal the deal for me since the e4gt doesn't have them. Both are great phones and it really just comes down to personal preference.

I tried both phones. The Epic touch is a richer multimedia experience. The web pages are buttery smooth and online video streaming is a higher quality. I did notice however that on basic web pages (full and mobile sites) with both phones in 4g that photon did loaded most pages faster. Both devices are fast and packed with features. The epic touch has a better looking and larger(slightly) screen. The photon feels better in my hands. One key selling point is that the photon hands down has better call quality and radio quality. I manage a roast beef shop, but I also sale turkey, chicken, ham, shakes, fries etc... but my business is roast beef first. After all the bells and whistles a phone needs to be able to do phone stuff like clear call quality. That being said, to me the photon is the better device.
I was going thru the same thing and decided to keep my photon due to reliability.

I have a Photon, but played a lot with the Samsung. Kept the Photon. Comments:
Samsung
- Colors are over saturated - they do 'pop', but they are not accurate
- Not as big as I thought it would be - size not an issue
- Screen low resolution was the show-stopper for me; a larger screen but lower resolution? What were they thinking.
- Build too light, flimsy and plasticy
Photon
- GSM SIM a big plus to me since I travel overseas
- Photon screen is brighter and whiter
- Screen much better outside
- I keep the screen turned down to 15-20% (too bright otherwise) - battery life is awesome
- USB charging port on the wrong side - makes the kickstand useless
- Awesome radio - haven't dropped a call yet
Tried network bandwidth in the store with both phones - Photon loaded first 75% of the time
But, you know, if the Samsung had a larger qHD screen, might have gone with it!

X2 vs TB to hold me over till ICS becomes the standard? More stable better Roms?

I've searched the forums but I couldn't find anything resent and I know with the speed of development any info was probably outdated anyway.
I come from a nook color/gtab/le pan rooting background where the choices are more limited and focused as far as rom selection goes. So some of these DX2 and TB Rom choices are a little over whelming.
I have an upgrade for Verizon but nothing really grabs me right now, but I still want to upgrade from my DX.
My main concern is Rom stability and speed. 3g vs 4g isn't a factor form me since this is just meant to carry me over for 6 months or so.
Your thoughts on what phone and what rom?
Dx2 rom choices are overwhelming?
Don't hear that often. Or ever....
Dx2 is a bad bet. Its a good phone, but with a locked bootloader and Tegra 2 it gets very little dev love.
Go get yourself a nice galaxy nexus. That's my advice.

I don't want a nexus, hence the original question posted.
If it is just holding you over for 6 months it would be a good investment since you don't care about lte. They'll have quad-cores out by that time. Although i am on cm7, the eclipse rom I think is pretty damn stable.

The DX2?
I'm used to CM7 from my nook. I like it, I know the CM7 for the DX2 is still in beta though.
Funny you ask, my wife has a TB and I an x2. If 4g is not an issue, I would say X2 hands down. ONLY, if you plan on installing cm7. My phone is blazing fast compared to hers. And smaller and lighter. The gpu on the x2 is light years ahead of the crummy one on the TB. Has less weird issues, and battery life is quite a bit better, even with cm7.
But, honestly, what don't you like about the nexus? I would highly suggest going that route if its an option.

I don't get that argument. The Nex has a 4.65 inch screen without having a bigger footprint than ours. So even if those buttons NEVER went away (and they do when screen size matters--watching video), it'd still be more screen on a same-size phone.
Also, why waste an upgrade on a 6 month stopgap device? What are you gonna do in 6 months when a phone you do like becomes available--pay the unsubsidized $600 for it?
The last thing I'd do is renew my contract/use my two year upgrade on a DX2 (especially knowing what we know now). Moto's already abandoned the thing, if it weren't for DKZ et al. so would most of us.
Phone flaws I'll never overlook again:
- Locked bootloader
- Pentile display
- Lack of NEON support
Agreed. I second the comment that dude, the soft buttons go away when the full screen is Needed. Such as updated games and when watching videos. Speaking of which, tonight I just picked up a galaxy nexus on eBay. Saw a great price and had to jump on it. X2 has been fun. And honestly, for the folks that did stick on xda for the x2, I'd say, good crowd!!
Back to ur question, I'd say, if ur looking at signing a contract, don't do it on the x2. If u really like the phone, pick one up on ebay. Later in the year look for the Samsung Galaxy S3. Sign a contract on that.

why does everyone talk **** about pentile screens? This is the ONLY phone I've EVER had that I can actually see the damn screen in bright florida sun and it has almost the same resolution as my netbook that I don't carry anymore because this phone straight up replaced it.
waaaaaaah my pixels arent square... waaaaaaaaaaah...
here's 2 cool features of this phone, real buttons that don't waste space on the digitizer and no forward facing camera. I don't want my phone looking at me.
the ONLY thing I dislike about this phone is the locked bootloader, and it hasn't been THAT much of a problem.
one thing I do know, it gets recpetion where almost all the others don't, and I travel for a living, so that is EXTREMELY important. the only issue I had with mine was the stock SD card was crappy, my phone would freeze and do stupid things until I replaced it... It even go run over by a lifted K5 Blazer (the big one, not the little s10 based one) in the colorado rockies with no screen protector or case or anything and all I have is a tiny scratch on the display and a scratch on the side all the way down to the metal...
yeah, METAL... this phone is made of METAL not wussy-assed taiwanese plastic.

I must say this is one rock solid phone! One thing Moto did NOT cheap out on was build quality. I have not handled a phone that is more sturdy and sleek (sleek enough for me) than this one. And it has some weight to it, which is not overwhelming but reassuring. I held my friend's SGSII and it was feather light and "felt" cheap...
yeah the rockies story made me look down at my dx2 in a case with a screen protector on it and feel kinda lame. lol.
If you like the screen then I am happy for you and I will agree that it is very bright. But there are plenty of well done tests that show the clear pitfalls of non-amoled pentile screens. I think the x2 is a good phone, but personally the poor colors, awful dark imagine viewing, and the ghosting are more then enough to get me to think twice about pentile. If I'm not mistaken, tomshardware might have called it devil
And buttons are a matter of choice, but after going from the d1 to the fascinate, to the TB, to the x2, I can safely say hardware buttons are not for me.
All in all if you pick up a x2 for $160 on ebay I think you will be happy if you put cm7 on it. But know it has some issues, as do most phones.

I misunderstood your OP. It's a fair phone for $150 unlocked (now that we have 2nd init. roms) if you're not OCD about display issues. Mild screen ghosting is nails-on-a-chalkboard to me, and the DX2 screen ghosts like no other.
Anyway, the DX vs. DX2 seems to be a wash. The DX2 has an extra core (and is a better dyno queen when it comes to benchmarks...like all Tegra 2 devices), but the DX is honestly just as zippy in 90% of tasks. The DX2 has a qHD screen, but the DX display looks better anyway (no ghosting).
If I were you, I'd install CM74DX-GB as seen in this thread:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10191-updated-info-on-revnumbers-cm4dx-gb1-batt-and-fm-radio-added/
on the X, and rock it for another four months until the SGSIII comes out.
2 cents.

This is not a real review just an honest one from a real person cause i feel most of the time these phone makers pay these companies to make the phones just seem better during reviews like when iphones always get the better reviews on every much better android phone its only what i and 7 of my friends think that jumped boat from the gs2 e4gt feel about the new evo and i don't expect anyone but the gs2 e4gt owners to understand this:
Screen:
*CONS-I really like both of these phones but when i got my evo yesterday and compared it to my gs2 on youtube videos and pics i could not help but to notice that the gs2 still has much better colors and just looks better period i still like the evo screen until i see them side by side then the evo looks as if its color has been washed or faded.in my option the gs2 e4gt wins hands down but i still like the evo,i tried different brightnesses as well but still so so.
*PROS-The evo has a much sharper picture due to being HD and all but not always noticeable.
Camera:
*CONS-i have seen so many reviews and commercials on how this camera is so great not the case im not trying to be the one to spoil this but if you came from the gs2 e4gt you would notice it right away,i used my micro sd from my last phone and seen some of my older pics from the gs2 e4gt and they look amazing and then i took at least 20 pics with all types of high settings and lighting and these pics are grainy and just not as good when compared hands down.
*PROS-This camera i has pretty good quality for the speed it takes the photos in.
Overall Phone ui:
*CONS-None so far
*PROS-The ui is clean and fluid much more than the gs2 e4gt because it was real zippy but never fluid so the evo wins this.
Thank you for this. I still have an ET4G and am thinking about getting an Evo lte

I can't take any reviewer even half way serious if they don't at least use some punctuation.

I agree my sister has a gs 2. I don't even think it's close the Samsung is way too colorful looks fake, oversaturated. EVO looks like my hd tv

I notice it as well, I have the ET4G and the One X from At&t.
While the colors seem a little faded after looking at the samsung, they seem more realistic and clean on the One X.
The ET4G- Colors are bright and almost silly, looks like crayons. Font is HUGE even when changing it with apps, it doesn't change it all and it looks bad. This is definitely a nice phone but if there was such a thing as "smartphones for kids" then this would be it.
HTC One X- The most clear and clean picture I've ever seen, it was so nice I thought it was fake..like one of the display phones. The font is small and clean..I realize this has to do with resolution as well.
I know people are gonna go crazy, but as far as speed goes.. in everyday use I really can't notice a difference from the 3D to the ET4G to the One X. I'm not into running benchmarks and all that silly stuff because if I have to use a special app to tell me my new phone is faster, then the difference is extremely small.
Like i said i only expected the gs2 e4gt users to understand not someone that never owned it or just someone that looked at a gs2 or that saw a review and is repeating what they heard this is for the owners of the gs2 that really know what i mean. After using my gs2 even my Samsung led 55" tv looks bad the gs2 is the closest i have ever seen to real life colors on a screen.
Overall i still like this new evo but im not sure i feel like i used my upgrade wisely

Don't get upset lol. There is no right or wrong answer, they both have great displays. It is all opinion and personal preference.

Because other users may have jumped from et4g to the LTE? And he was sharing his thoughts or may be curious.as to others thoughts that own.one?
I still have my Epic 4gT and I agree blacks look more black but to me the colors do look emphasized. It's going to take us E4GT owners a while to get used to the new screen on the EVO. That being said I think the screen on the EVO is hands down better, its just more accurate AMD realistic. Camera is awesome on both devices, I'm not going to choose sides cause it really depends more on the photographer yielding the camera at this point (Evo takes way faster shots though). I can slightly tell the Evo is faster and Im a sense lover so nuff said. Now what I will say makes the Evo the better device is build quality, voice quality, and kickstand. This thing is solid, wich is the complete opposite of the E4GT. These are my opinions and may not be the same for you. But if your on the fence go ahead and get the Evo its future proof unlike the E4GT.

I like this new evo but after coming from the gs2 i feel like my new evos screen has no soul and colors look so blan and black looks like a dark grey i even thought my phone was defective but my friends phone is the same, someone would have to pay me to say this screen is better than the gs2 screen.
im not trying to be an ass just let down, pics taken on gs2 look sharper and the colors are much closer to real life and on the new evo they are good quality but not better and not even close to real life color,if you have both phones test this out in a lit area.
The screen is very important to me coming from the gs2 e4gt and i just cant get over it really might return this cause i dont want to waste an upgrade.

I thought it had been settled that the highlighted part is wrong.
Turn the ISO down instead of leaving it on auto. It makes a huge difference.....just like with a real camera

Hey some people like their colors brightter personally samoled screends make me feel like I'm tripping but only when looking at that phone. Lol to me that isn't real life looking to each his own though.

this phone rocks!!

well i was at my sprint store today to pay my bill and im kinda cool with one of the dudes that works there.. so he like come check out the new samsung gs3.. now he know's i like htc.. so i said screw it ill play around with it see what it got.. well he asking bout my lte and im telling him i love it ect.. so as im playing with it i ask him if he ever heard of quadrant or linpack.. he said no! so i show him on the gs3.. i did 2 quadrant tests both was 4700 range and linpack i did like 5 runs and it went from like say 140-190 it jump around alot just like it does on my lte.. my lte does better than the gs3!!! i kno people say quadrants aint sh*T but that made me feel so good to see my HTC LTE kick the gs3 a$$.. on my lte i get like around 5100 on quadrant and linpack like 140-215.. its stays around like 200 the most.. yes i am rooted not stock.. but i was geting the same when it was stock.. thats my word.. this phone kicks a$$!!!!!!!!!!!!:victory:
I went to the Sprint store today, and compared my phone to the GS3. The screen was not as bright and the whites weren't white. I read people saying that but I was honestly surprised how dull it was. Plus the keyboard on Sense rules IMO.
I just wish I had the weather on the lockscreen like them. It's pretty awesome.

Yep, this phone is a beast!
I compared them at the store.. Also my brother has the S3 from Sprint, so I really compared them...
The blacks on the SIII screen are absolutely amazing and destroy the EVOs, although that is where the advantages end... The screen on the EVO is MUCH more clear (especially with text), you cannot see pixels on the EVO, because it is not pentile like the SIII......in fact you can see so the pixels so well on the SIII, that it almost does not even look like a 720p display. Also every other color, besides black is head and heals above the SIII..........the whites too on the SIII are blueish....most everything has a bluish tint, besides the blacks. Finally, things are a bit blurry on the SIIIs display, while on the EVO 4G LTE, it is crystal clear.........so the display is obviously far better on the EVO.
Reception.........no comparison here, since it is well known the SIII has radio issues. Although on the same table (not holding), the EVO 4G LTE gets full bars, while the SII gets 2 and the SIII gets 4. So the reception on this phone is far better than the SIIIs, which is also what they said at the sprint store.
Camera.............of course I also compared this... The camera and video recording is a tad bit better on the EVO and in video recording, the SIII records sound oddly, while the EVO does not.
Performance... yep, oddly enough the SIII performs a good amount worse. The best I seen was 4700 quadrant on a clean ROM and all apps closed on the SIII, while my EVO with MEANrom gets 5271. The most noticable thing is that the memory performance on the EVO is faster than the SIII, so it's memory must be a bit better, despite having less than the SIII. It also seems in benchmarks like OpenGL Egypt offscreen, the EVO still outperforms the SIII.
The only thing I am jelly about with the SIII, is that the darn thing is butter smooth! Every menu is just pure buttery goodness on that phone. Although I attribute that to the fact that HTC's Sense performs far worse..
Other than that, I love this phone. My 14 day trade in time expires in 2 days and now I know for sure I am sticking with this beautiful phone!
I know about that but they do it different. You can keep your background instead of HTCs way of doing it. Wish I had that.

You people must have amazing eyes. I always see people complain about seeing the pixels on the S3 screen. I don't see them. The colors seem vibrant and the blacks are truly black. It's a very nice screen to me. I prefer the EVO LTE but there is definitely nothing wrong with the S3 screen. I sometimes feel we exaggerate things for the sake of feeling better about our phones lol.

I agree about the screen. If you hold them both side by side and find an app on both phones with the same white background, you can clearly see a difference. This phone is noticeably brighter and I really don't like how the AMOLED screens on the Samsung phones turn everything to a bluish green hue.
Try it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

People typically feel the need to ensure themselves that their purchase was worth it. That's one of the causes of a lot of arguments here.

On the S3, "Graininess" can be seen at about 18 inches for me... unacceptable. Every device has pros/cons. EVO's pro is the screen. S3's pro is 2GB & Wolfson DAC. I waited for the S3...and still chose the EVO.

Agreed. My Photon was probably the best 'phone' but the screen was awful.

From a Rezound to a Galaxy S III

Before I begin please let me say that his is not meant in an way to bash HTC, the Rezound, nor this community in any way. This is simply a review, if you will, comparing the two. I loved the Rezound so I wanted to give my $.02
Let's start with the physical appearance. (I'll including screen review with hardware) There are two things that are quite obvious: The GSIII is, of course, a larger screen at 4.8" with the Rez at a 4.3". The S3 seems to have a smaller bezel in comparison which is certainly made possible due to one thing I've always wanted to have: No Verizon branding on the front. The Galaxy S III simply has "SAMSUNG" resting below the main ear piece and between the LED and the sensors/camera. While the HTC Rezound has four red soft keys at the bottom, the GSIII as an oval home button and that is all you see. When the phone is on, you are greeted with a menu key on the left and back on the right, both giving a soft white glow. I've sat there for about twenty minutes trying to see any kind of outline for the keys and found none. I have to tip my hat to Samsung for making them "discrete."
The Rezound has the power button on the right corner of the top of the phone, making it very easily accessible with it's 4.3" display. The GSIII has the power button on the right side of the phone closer to the top, making it easy to hold your phone and keep your thumb either on or around the button. (The home key is a hard key, not soft, so it can be used to turn your screen on.) The volume rocker is a single piece that can be easily pushed in either direction. While the rocker on the Rezound seemed a bit low profile, the GSIII's sticks out nicely and doesn't give me an trouble.
The back of the GSIII is made of polycarbonate, giving it a nice "firm" feeling instead of the traditional cheap plastic feel. Since you hold the phone more towards the bottom, Samsung has put the speaker next to the camera, whereas the Rezound had it at the bottom. This was never a problem for me with the Rezound due to how I held it, but I no some people aren't a fan, saying it's placement was awkward. I will say that it provides a lot of noise that's clear and doesn't sound too distorted, as opposed to the Rezound where I felt like it was somewhat muted and crackly. The Rez sports a dual-LED flash while the GSIII has a single. Now, while it seems that the flash on the GSIII is brighter, I've noticed a big issue: It sits kind of "low." Because of that, when I have my flash turned on I have light spilling out at the top through the gap between the battery door and the phone. While this isn't bothersome since you can't see it from the front of the phone, it is annoying because it doesn't flow with the polished design that Samsung tried to give.
Now, hardware!
The Galaxy S III has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU that clocks in at 1.4GHz, while the Rezound uses a Snapdragon S3 clocked in at 1.5GHz. For those that aren't too familiar with CPUs: Even though the Rez is clocked in a .1 higher, the S4 is newer and has the upper hand. The GSIII has 2GB of RAM (while the international version just has 1GB but a quad-core over dual) and the Rezound has 1GB. I've come to quickly realize it's because of how much memory Touchwiz uses. At the moment of me typing this, I have every app closed on my GSIII (minus the launcher) and I have 803MB of my RAM used. That being said, I never run into an issue of almost running out of RAM (I'll get into management later when I review software.)
Both phones use 8MP camera on the rear capable of recording in HD. However, as known, a higher MP count does not automatically mean a better camera. No matter what ROM I use, I seem to have issues getting my GSIII to focus from time to time. Even when I can get it to focus, it just seems that the Rezound takes a slightly better picture. I would post comparison shots but I no longer have my Rezound.
Now, for the screens. The Rez uses a 720p SuperLCD IPS display and packs a whopping 342DPI, making it one of the best displays out. The GSIII uses an HD Super AMOLED with a 720p resolution. While it has a smaller DPI count (320) it provides very crisp (but not as sharp compared to the Rez) images with "true" colors. I did a side-by-side comparison of a few images at full brightness and the GSIII was superior. Now, as I said though, it isn't as "crisp" as the rezound. However, unless you have the phone an inch from your eyes, you can't really tell.
On a side note, I would like to point out that the radio isn't as bad as everyone was saying it is. I've honestly noticed no difference in signal strength from my Rezound to my GSIII.
EDIT: Forgot to talk about battery life. The Rezound has a 1,620mAh battery while the GSIII has a whopping 2,100mAh. The difference is understandable given the screen size. However, I've noticed that with LTE on, screen at max brightness, and all of the motion controls and "Smart" actions, I'll get around 12 hours with a screen on of about 3 1/2 hours and be at about 25-30%. And AOSP battery life just isn't fair lol.
Software! When it boils down to it, we mainly care about our user experience and how quickly we can get things done. Since the GSIII is using newer hardware, I'll just point out features (With Sense 4, to make it fair.)
Sense 4 out of the box is customizable compared to other OEM skins. Being able to swap skins on the fly is very handy. The only issue I ever had was not being able to swap individual components (Navbars, clocks, lock rings, etc.) but still loved the fact that I could. My biggest pet peeve with Sense 4 relates to animations and the fact that they only really happen when you're using Rosie. If you use Rosie and open Messages, you get something along the lines of a flying out animation. A simple animation that's nice, but I don't know why HTC restricted it to Rosie. Stock TouchWiz implements the AOSP ICS animations that are very fluid, giving the UI a nice snappy-feel while keeping it smooth. When it comes to sharing in Sense 4, you have a lot of standard options. An example being Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Email, Picasa...but I always hated that it missed a simple one system-wide: Texting. I wasn't a fan of how it was selective about what you could share via text (such as facebook photos and photos from different websites) so I have to give this one to TouchWiz seeing as it gives you every option you can think of at all times.
While Sense 4 does provide a nice user experience with the apps included and how you can stream (just as on previous iterations), Samsung upped the ante for all other OEMs with a flood of amazing user-friendly features (possibly in response to Apple saying "You don't innovate.") Your GSIII is sitting in another room and you get a text? As soon as you come back and pick up your phone, it will vibrate to let you know you have a notification then flash a blue LED to let you know it's a text. Get a text that says "Call me?" you just swing your phone up to your ear and the phone will automatically call that person (can also be done while just viewing the contact.) You have the ability to be playing a video on your phone and just have it "popped up" in the corner of your screen so you can watch it while, say, typing an e-mail. The limitation I've noticed is it has to be a video saved on your phone. Another interesting thing I've found is being able to set the vibration pattern for a single contact or groups. You have a few stock patterns but have the option to make your own very easily. The way the S3's task manager handles things seems to be a bit more solid than others. I never notice an choking of my system. Doesn't matter much, seeing as a fresh application still loads like it had been quietly running the entire time.
In short, Sense 4 is a great UI experience compared to earlier versions of Blur, Touchwiz, and Sense itself. But Samsung really went the extra step with "Nature UX" to blow the competition out of the water. While I do understand that many don't like the color scheme of Touchwiz/Nature UX (whatever you want to call it.) but it is by far the best UI I've ever dealt with. It's smooth, VERY smooth and provides features that simply make you and your phone feel more connected.
This all being said and done, I love this phone. How it feels in my hand, the styling of it, the hardware. I haven't had a Samsung since the first Omnia running WM 6.1 and I have to say I'm more than impressed and very happy.
Thank you for this, make me more jelly lmao

Funny thing is i went to nexus after having the rezound. Nexus was great but random service drops got me sooo annoyed. So i bought a gs3 yesterday. Little do you know a jb leak with radios comes out and i havent dropped service yet. Now my nexus is a great phone. But i might return my gs3 maybe not i like newer toys. But great review. The rez screen beats both imo tho

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I turned down the Nexus and went for a GSIII. That and I heard the III had better battery life so I figured "why not?" I don't think a leak has come out for the GS3 for Jellybean. Well, one has for the T-Mobile version but not Verizon's. Glad to hear it helped you out, though. And thanks! Yeah. The viewing angle and sharpness are better, but I love color depth, so I'm sold. First time I pulled up Power Amp on my GSIII my eyes were in love haha. The main theme is black with blue trim so it looks stunning.
I think this would be more appropriate in the SIII forum possibly, if people wanted to find out more about the SIII i don't think they would go here.
edit: well at least now i know what to tell people when they ask me what's a new good phone.

Some people just automatically think that because a thread is about a different phone that it's the worst thing in the world, even if it is to inform people. You're probably right, though. Can a mod just move the OP into that thread or should I just flag this one to be deleted and post the review in that thread?

I just love the simplicity of TouchWiz, really lol. I can understand different tastes. Just send your S3 in to Samsung (if you have warranty.) I have great service with mine. I found out I'm pulling faster speeds, actually. I managed to hit 39.6/14.1
Glad the OP likes his new phone but I always get the feeling when I read things like this whether the person is trying to convince him or herself rather than us that they made a good purchase. Don't get me wrong, I think we all have that need especially when it comes to electronics. It's funny to see how the GNote2 blows the GS3 out of the water already so shortly after the latter's release and if the rumors are true about LG's next superphone it seems like we will only have to wait a short while before the latest Galaxies are a distant memory again. If only I was a celebrity..I'd show my face on each and every one of these new device announcements just to get the freebies.
@ all: I would just remind you a couple of things:
1st Do not try to make Mod job, if you don't like a thread just refrain yourself to post no sense words.
2nd Moderate your language, words like dbag or fag are not tollerated against another user.
Thank you.
I see ive been moderated.......oops!
Anyway, thanks for posting the review. Ive been looking at the gs3 too.
I think we all knew how this story, ahem review was going to turn out. I doubt a flagship device such as the SG3 was going to lose out in this comparison. Just the fact that its a shiny new toy wins it a few brownie points. That being said I think the rezound still holds up well after almost a year since release, and now that we have kernel source and fully functional AOSP on the near horizon our little device has never looked better
You're in denial. Switched myself and 100x faster, cool as all get out and oh the screen.: ) and stable cm 10. The rezzy was great but I must say you can't say the s3 isn't baller

The galaxy nexus is also a good option to switch to. The new jellybean radios are nothing short of a miracle. No data drops, crazy speeds, and great reception now. Its smoother than touchwiz especially on jellybean. New radios also improved battery a ton. They are also much more likely to exchange a defective rezound for the nexus as well.

I gotta agree here. With the radio kinks worked out, I'm tempted to find the nearest nexus on craigslist. No way am I paying retail price.
