K9 Mail Duplicate emails - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently started using K9 mail, but have come across an issue of duplicate emails. I will receive them in both the inbox and in the folder I have them filtered to. For example, I have created a filter in gmail to send all emails from family into a folder called "Family". When I receive them in K9 Mail, it says there are 2 emails. The email shows up in the inbox folder and in the "Family" folder. I must view/delete them separately. Is there any way to have the mail just show up in the "Family" folder only or even vice versa (in the inbox)?

Sounds like something funny on the server end to me, I've never seen this happen.. What provider or server is in use, and is it IMAP or POP?

Does this also happen with the stock app?

I am currently using Gmail via IMAP. To be honest, I have not checked the stock app or the Gmail app to see it happens with those programs also. I should do that I guess. lol.

I actually restored some old settings and don't notice the problem any longer (thank goodness for Titanium Backup - which I didn't think about until after I set up my folders again).
Now I have another problem. I have noticed that sometimes when I send an email, it will send multiple versions of the draft out as well as the final draft. For example, grafts are automatically saved in gmail every so many minutes. Well if it takes me 20 minutes (I know, that's a long time - lol) to send out the email, all the saved versions of the draft are sent out also. This can be quite troublesome if I completely reword or delete sections of the email before I send out the final version. Any clues as to why or how this is happening? Thanks in advance.

Im not happy with K9 mAIL...it downloads email that i have already downloaded on my laptop the previous day too...is there a setting to get it to only download emails for the present day??

[Q] Stock Email Client Deleting Emails

Hi all,
Recently purchased a Samsung Nexus S. The stock email client (not the GMail app), using POP3 will delete mails once they have been downloaded, or when I next sync. Occasionally it will not delete all mails, just some. The option to delete from the server is not ticked and no other clients are pulling from the server, so its not the case that another app is deleting them. To confirm, emails aren't being deleted after say 10 days, they are being deleted within minutes, and I'm only downloading a handful of mails.
Any help much appreciated- all forum posts seem to relate to other clients consuming from the server and deleting mails, which isnt my issue. Cheers.
Andy
If I remember correctly, POP email servers are linked between the mobile device and the regular computer. If you delete something on the computer it will be deleted on the phone and vice versa. If this isn't the case, are you sure they're being deleted and not hidden do to being marked as read? Check the trash to see if they've been sent there.
Thanks for the reply.
Messages are not being moved to any visible folders, and no other client (ie Outlook) are accessing this mail server.
Thanks.
OK, I kind of resolved this, if it helps anyone.
Firstly, I tried a different POP3 and also an IMPA provider with the mail client - both work fine, no problems. Then I recalled that my mail provider (Virgin Media UK) have recently advised that it is necessary to put 'recent:' ahead of the POP3 username, making it 'recent:[email protected]'. Now the default mail client won't allow this format of username, presumably some internal validation on the client side does not permit it.
So I tried K9 Mail - this behaves the same way with the standard POP3 username, but with the 'recent:' prefix (which it allows) my mails aren't deleted every time I pull from the server. My thoughts are that without the 'recent:' prefix, Virgin Media only returns the new mails - as the default mail client syncs with the server on a 1:1 relationship, it then deletes all old messages (even if they are only a few seconds old). With 'recent:' I think Virgin Media supplies a whole chunk of recent emails, not just the new ones, and the client app essentially doesn't delete the older mails until the time I happen to sync and they are no longer classed as 'recent'.
So in summary, there is no fix for the built-in client - but a workaround is to use K9, which seems a better client anyway. What's most ironic is that Virgin Media's email service uses Google Mail. Oh dear...

[Q] Can K-9 be set to delete messages on the server after X days?

I have one email account that I check via POP with MS Outlook. I set it so that mail is left on the server and deleted after it is older than X days.
I use K-9 to read mail via POP for another account on my phone. I set K-9 to only keep last 100 messages and was under impression that everything older will be erased from the server automatically.
Today I found out it doesn't work like that - my mailbox on the server got full - messages were never deleted.
Can K-9 be set up similar to Outlook in that respect? I found multiple options like "Delete on a server if you delete message locally" but I don't want to delete anything locally by hand - this email is used only to receive status reports from automated jobs and I receive too many messages every day to delete them manually. I don't mind switching from POP to IMAP if this would help.

old emails reloading as unread

Is anyone else having this problem?
Using the samsung email app .In the email settings for the account I have set the "Recent Messages" to 25 (the same thing happens if I set it to any other number except "total").* When I receive a new email & delete it, the 26th email moves back up to 25th & the mail app brings it in as a new unread email again. My htc desire allowed me to set it by number of days old, but I don't see this as an option on the S3.**I really don't want to set it to "Total" & have every email that I've ever received but haven't deleted show up on my*phone.
It's driving me nuts.
Thanks
It's happening on my mate's s3 too. Anyone else?
Is it deleted on your email account as well? I had this issue when I got my S3, too.
There's an option within the mail app, where you can toggle to delete those mails from your email account, when you delete them inside the app.
The default setting on my S3 was, that it's only deleted inside the app, but not from my mail.
I hope this helps.
Settings>App manager>email app>clear cache
Or go to recovery and wipe cache/fix permissions

S4 Old Emails Return, Sync
Hello,
I have seen that many, many folks are having problems with this. Posts all over the place on android central and many other places.
I have had this problem intermittently over time and have tried different things.
In the past, I just deleted the old emails and typically no more problem for some time.
Recently the problem returned.
Deleting the old emails did not get rid of them. Essentially, you see emails pop up as new at the bottom of your S4 android email box. They are old emails.
I tried the following.
Deleting old emails, older emails just show up as new, unread.
Deleting the actual emails in your box is not good if you want to keep them. If you use this method you'd have to delete them all. I don't want this.
Delete all emails from your pop3 email and set your android mail to delete from server. I don't want this. I want to keep them on the server. I should be able to.
Set the android email to 25, didn't help. Set the android email to total and then delete or move them to trash, didn't help.
Delete and reconfigure the email box. Didn't work.
I am currently trying a fix for my comcast email I have always used pop3 style setup on the stock android email setup. Today I deleted my email box and reconfigured it as IMAP and set the security as SSL. It seems to work, but I will repost if it doesn't . Setting to TSL, the mail wouldn't load. Setting to no security with IMAP, wouldn't load an email. SSL seems to be the only way.
Good luck!

delete contents of inbox

hi all,
lumia 800
can anyone shed any ideas as to why my email inbox empties a day or so after reading, my sent folder is intact just the inbox empties all read mail
voith
I see 45 people have read this query, with no solution so instead I will ask is this normal, does everyones inbox empty by itself after a short period of time.
Try this: go into email settings -> synchronisation settings -> Download email from - then select a longer time.
Cheers
Do you also download your e-mails to your PC or Laptop? Then it is normal for the inbox to show up empty because those messages are no longer available. The sent messages are stored locally on your phone and not in your normal sent mailbox with your e-mail server.
"Do you also download your e-mails to your PC or Laptop" Yes
"Then it is normal for the inbox to show up empty because those messages are no longer available" Depends on how you setup email account, if you use IMAP instead of POP3 then your inbox would be available across al your devices.
Cheers

thanks all for your replies,in the synchro I have it downloading from anytime, though it made no difference, regarding the above quote, I was not downloading my mail on another computer as I wanted all mail to go to my phone and stay there as it was a dedicated addys, I lived with the deletions until I desperately needed a recent received email, and found it had already been deleted, so in the end I had to add the account to my home comp to download the mails so that I could save them, since I have started to download them to my main comp, it has not altered the time taken to delete its always a few days.
oh and I am running pop3

[Q] IMAP Email Gone?

Greets all,
Was wondering if anyone might have this issue. I setup my phone to grab my emails, I set it up as an IMAP so that this way I could get the emails but keep it on the server, so this way I can download it on my computer into outlook later on. Up until the One max, I never had an issue and always set it up the same way, I recently just noticed that after I read a email and if I delete it from the phone it seems to delete it off the server as well. I tested this out by sending myself an email and then deleting it, then going into outlook to receive the email but it wasnt there. If I got into the server its in the deleted folder and not in the inbox as it should be.
Anyone else notice this?
Well I just tried something else, I just set it up as a POP account, and it works as IMAP, Hmmm I wonder if they messed up and named them wrong, where Imap is suppose to be pop and pop is suppose to be IMAP.
Still curious to see others responses.
When i click Add account, it shows Other(POP/IMAP)
Screen shot attached for your reference, what do you get?
Same thing except I dont have Gmail or Yahoo in the list, just the other three, but thats not where the problem is, its after you pick Other/pop3. Long story short: I have my own email, I set it up through aol a long time ago when they were giving away domain names for free, then they dropped it and I had to get it registered through another place to keep it, but I still can use aol's mail settings in outlook to get me mail. The problem is I can see the email on aol's site, and download it to my outlook, but the first way I set it up on the phone I would see it on the phone and then delete it, when I go into outlook it would say no mail, but if I went to aol's site and looked in the trash it was in there where its not suppose to be, its suppose to be in the inbox to be downloaded to my outlook. But when I changed the setting to pop setting, it is working as Imap should.

Ah okay, i got your problem... i don't know why imagined that you PC was missing IMAP, but was that not the IMAP was supposed to work..., 2 way communication = IMAP
POP vs IMAP
If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).
IMAP also provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.
Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.

Okay you missed the whole point here. When I chose IMAP with my email on my phone, and then delete it from the inbox (select and hit trash can) its suppose to delete from the phone inbox, but should show up as new in my outlook 2010 on my pc as new. It doesnt show up at all. If I go to a web browser and login into my email, its in my trash folder and not in my inbox as it should be.
Now if I change the setting on the phone FROM IMAP to POP, THEN is works correctly as IMAP.
they way i have always thought of imap to work is , as the other poster mentioned: 2 way communication.
if i delete mail on the phone (imap), then on my web based email, that same email will be deleted there.
if i move an email from , say, inbox to some other folder on my phone, then on the server it too will get moved there.
this is how imap is supposed to work? at least that is how it has worked for me over the years...
i have 4 email accounts on my own email server. i use gmail to fetch that mail and i also use my web based interface to access it. the mail is synced everywhere its supposed to be.
i have the all set to imap, not pop.

me too... yes that's how IMAP works, i am guessing OP has some little confusion on it..
I do understand this, but coming from a samsung galaxy note, this wasnt the case. On computers it did work this way, but every phone I've had and including the Note did not work this way, this is the first time its functioning this way, which I thought was odd.
