[Q] MMS in roaming - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I searched the forum about the topic, but no real answer. The problem is that, the MMS is disabled during being in roaming and having data switched off. Is there a way to make MMS messages working while the Internet data is switched off ?

Unfortunately, MMS requires a data connection.

I'm surprised, because on stock 2.1 ROM of desire it worked OK (internet data in roaming was blocked while mms messaging were working). Same thing I remember from WinMobile. Does anybody else is in peace with that mmsing is just not working in roaming ? No one did anything ?

okay. there is maybe solution for this, lookslike issue.
I did the same, that in Settings > Wireless & .. > Mobile networks > Data roaming - Unchecked to avoid data in roaming. So No Data, therefore no MMS. okay, no acceptable for me.
try this: in roaming(!) just un-check Settings > Wireless & .. > Mobile network (connect to internet) or in Statusbar menu in roll menu tap Quick settings and un-check Mobile network and then in Mobile networks menu (setting menu) check back Data roaming. So the MMS send and receive could be possible.
I understand this logic, as internet connection is something else than use MMS APN to communicate through mobile network data.
Cheers, Ondrej

Will check it in couple of days

can you switcg data off on 2g networks

Hi Guys, I got fond of the Hero a lot. and requested a friend to get one for me on his way from london (sim free, unlocked)
1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy
Appreciate your clear and quick responses.

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

does shutting mobile network shut data only?
the toggle is native
no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.
thanks in advance
to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.
Thank you, appreciate it
I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update

Download MMS Pics w/ Network Data off?

Hi All,
My wife doesn't have a data plan for her Mini Pro, so we have the network data turned off.
She uses text/mms a lot and I wanted to see if there is a way to allow her MMS (Handcent) to access the network data to download pictures without allowing any other programs to access the network data.
Currently, when she receives an MMS, I turn on her network data, download the pic and then turn it back off. As you can imagine, it is not a long-term solution.
For all other data, she uses wifi -
I appreciate any help/insights you all may have!
Afaik, MMS uses a separate apn from data connections. Meaning you could totally turn off data and she would still be able to use MMS. As to your question, Permissions Denied or LBE Privacy Guard might be what you're looking for.
This may be an issue specific to AT&T in the US, but to receive picture messages on their network, you need to enable the network data.
For text messages, they will come and go even with the data turned off as they are routed seperately.
I'll see if the programs you recommended might be a way for me to restrict all network data access except to mms -
I have the same problem using Telcel in Mexico.
I do the same thing as you do to your wife's phone, sadly I haven't found a workaround. Good thing is we get notified when we receive a MMS so we know when to enable it.
You can add a widget or use the status bar to turn data on/off with a single touch, I think that's the fastest way without leaving it on all the time.
I forgot to mention APNdroid. Just search for it on the market. It disables the network connection by modifying the APN.
I saw this posted elsewhere on XDA and it seemed to work so far (I'll let you know after I receive my bill at the end of the month).
"Go into apn settings. If you have only one for data and mms, then edit it, and right at the end "apn type" probably says "default " or perhaps "*" or maybe "default, supl, mms "
Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default, supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type."
When I launched the web browser it said I was not connected to the internet, but I was still able to send and receive picture messages.

[Q] 3G Issue?

Hi. I am hoping someone may have some insight. I am on Simply Honey 3.9 and have an unlimited data plan. When I am not on the wifi, I get no Internet access via the the Android browser or Firefox. So basically if I try to use any app that needs internet access, I get an error. I first thought maybe its the rom, but I tried a few. Am I missing a setting? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
ScottZ0
check your apn
settings > wireless and network . mobile network > access poin names
click menu then reset defaults if there isnt anything there and make sure spn type's internet + mms
You are the man. Thanks for the help. 100% solved.

perm disable of roaming data?

hey, is there any magical hidden menus where i can permanently disable data roaming? i still want phone and text roaming, but not data... every time i go where i don't have coverage it automatically enables roaming and i got an unexpected roaming bill last month... checked and data roaming was enabled on the phone..
This is for a T-Mo T959 on wind mobile in canada... not the i9000m in my sig.
Does this not do it?

yes, but then every time i leave my network it enables it and prompts me telling me it has done so, and if someone else is using my phone (or the kids are playing with it) it gets turned on.
Thats odd. I travel outside of the normal network pretty often and I've never had that happen to me. "Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Networks > Data roaming <--- Disable it" is how I am setup and it always pops up with the option to enable but I never do and I get no service again(data only) until I get back into a normal service area. I'd assume its a bug in the ROM you are currently running. If no one else is experiencing the same problem running the same setup I'd suggest trying to re-download and re-flash.
Good luck!
Its the stock rom, and it does prompt as you said yours does, but if I am not paying attention or someone else is using it, it gets turned on and is not noticed til my next bill where I find surprise charges... I am looking for a way in the programming or whatever, to perm disable roaming, or at least supress the prompt.

i really wish people would actually read the threads before responding.
I don't use the app so I'm not sure but perhaps you can use tasker to automatically disable data when your roaming.

[Q] New APN settings don't save on S2 and no internet calling on the UK 3 network ?

Hello
I have the S2 Galaxy with ICS 4.0.3 - carphone warehouse version , it was originally locked to UK Orange.
On Orange it always allowed phone calls to be made whilst the phone internet data was also turned on. (H+ in the top right corner)
Now that I've had the phone unlocked and am using a UK 3 sim card, I've had problems with the phone use.
1) If the internet data is turned on and I'm not browsing and I try to make a phone call - I get the message - 'No internet calls allowed' ??
2) On trying to access the phones data internet I now keep getting a web message from 3 - 'Your trying to use your phone as a modem or in a hotspot' ??
I've toggled between the data packet selection and the data roaming selection buttons in the wireless and network settings area.
Phoned 3 a few times, been through all the checks in the settings area.
Tethering off
Wifi off
Anything that shouldn't be checked isn't!
Anyway I've been directed to the APN settings and there is nothing there - everything is UNSET !
I've read the threads here and used the 3 APN settings and my phone will not save what I type in?
3 went through the set up and to finalise I pressed save - only for it not to save - the APN page is still blank.
Any ideas on what the problem could be ?
Thanks

Flash a Custom ROM like CyanogenMod or flash a Retail ROM. Look here on XDA and catch one. It will work for sure!
I already flashed a retail ROM onto the phone - UK Carphone warehouse ICS 4.0.3
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1
Solved !!
Problem solved..
I reflashed a non wipe ICS 4.0.3 over what was already on the phone.
I had taken a few back up rom images via CWM and used one of them to restore the DATA program apps!
The APN is there now and reads like this should anyone else need the info to sort theirs out.

However the message - 'no internet calling allowed' still appears - but I've been told that's something to do with the wdcma mobile network setting??
Have a good evening everyone!
