[Q] Atrix still bad? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so it's been a few months since the last thread regarding how the atrix is.
I currently have a Inspire 4G and I'm debating on getting the Atrix.
You own it, I want to know about it! What do you think? Should I make the switch?

The answer to your question is entirely subjective.

Was it ever bad? Debuted a super phone?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

It was good when it was locked, now that it is unlocked it is turning into a behemoth. Just wait until you see a polished CM7 rom on this thing.

it was never bad, otherwise this forum would be desolate.

If you are willing to unlock and flash custom ROM, its a beast.
If you have to live with the stock firmware, there's probably better options out there, unless you really hate 4.3 form factor.

put it to you this way the locked bootloader was why alot of people didnt care for it but the bootloader can be unlocked now and the custom rom train is going to pick up steam, as some one else said cm7 for one thing

It's better than the Inspire that I owned.
Don't listen to what they say in the Inspire forums. The Inspire isn't the best AT&T has and the Atrix is a lot better than what people think. It's a very nice phone.
Not trying to put the Inspire down at all--I just know because I've owned both of them. The Atrix beats it and the Nexus S that I have...

Honestly, it was never bad. As a stock device that was incapable of installing kernels, it was good. I still found myself using my Captivate while the bootloader was locked. Now that there's ROMs and kernels available, I haven't touched my Cappy at all.

wow! I wasn't expecting that many responses so fast!
I want to root the phone, play ff7 (of course) and ENJOY the phone.
I put a custom rom on my inspire so I don't see why I wouldn't put a custom rom on the atrix...
Trying to get the inspire back to "out of the box" state so I can return it.
The only issue I have with the inspire is running fpse and ff7. little laggy at times. hoping the dual core will remedy the issue.
hell, it's the same price and you get more internal memory, hdmi cable, and a better CPU..

I've never had any lag on any emulator I've tried. I don't think I've lagged once in a game.

Atrix is the best phone i've used, honestly. I wouldn't trade it for anything, except maybe SGSII.
Sure, it has some bugs and issues at the moment, but those will be fixed or bypassed eventually. Atrix has a great dev community.

The only time mine gets warm is if it's hot outside and I use GPS.

The only time my phone gets hot is when I'm using it with the car dock, where it's charging, playing Slacker/Pandora/Google Music, and sitting in the hot sun.

Samsung Vibrant vs myTouch 4G?

Hi guys, im going back to android (had a G1 a year ago) from blackberry (got tired) and im getting two good offers on these phones, but since these smartphones are SO different to what i used to have (G1 xD), im kinda confused wich one is better, so i want you guys to help me out here, wich is one should i get? Vibrant or myTouch 4G?
Internet speed its not important since i don't live in a 4G area (in fact, there isn't any 4G coverage at all in my country), but i like to play games and stuff like that. I like my phone to be fast and with very little lag. I have read on internet that Samsung's Hummingbird processor its better than the Snapdragon proccesor that the myTouch 4G have, but, i don't know why, i keep reading on forums that the myTouch 4G is faster than the Vibrant...how is that possible? The Vibrant have more RAM, ROM (16GB Internal, the myTouch have only 4GB), faster proccesor, better GPU...well, im a little confused there too.
Any opinions?
Mytouch 4G. It has way more features and has a bigger community of devs.
Camera with FLASH! Trackpad. Front Camera. Metallic build quality.
With both phones stock, the HTC has 700+ mb of ram available and the Vibrant has only 304+ available. The other issue is file systems. The HTC uses I think ext4 and the Vibrant uses its home grown system of RFS. I feel the RFS system is probable the biggest issue to slow the phone down. I have mine rooted with custom rom that uses ext4 (voodoo) and it is faster with much better battery life then all the stock MT4G's that I have seen. If you are not going to root anything then I would recommend the MT4G or even look at the G2x. But the screen on the vibrant is killer
myTouch4G has 768mb ram, Vibrant has 512mb (about 330mb is available for Android to use, depending on the rom).
I'd say the MSM8255 Snapdragon is probably on-par with the Hummingbird in the SGS - the SGS does have a much better GPU for 3D gaming, though.
The Vibrant may have a 16gb ROM, but only 2gb is available for app storage, the rest is treated as an internal SD card.
They would both be great phones, but the Vibrant has the better screen.
I have a vibrant and my wife has a mt4g. I would say if youre going to root and flash roms get the vibrant, but if youre going to leave it stock get the mt4g. Both phones were laggy stock to me. Im much happier with the dev community for the vibrant though. I've flashed 6 or 7 different roms on the mt4g (including cm7) but none of them seem as complete as bionix or trigger
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Ok, i forgot to say this, but im TOTALLY going to root the phone. In fact, is one of the mains reasons that im comming back to android (and here plays the song "Im comming home" by Dirty Money ), i love flashing roms, looking for bugs in new roms, the excitement of someone releasing a new rom (like Cyanogen), trying out weird apps in the market place and all that kind of stuff, i DON'T like stock phones at all...i installed OS6 on my Blackberry 9300 as soon as i got it, looking for something different (running away from stock), still was a pretty boring phone tough.
You have told me guys that both phones stock, the MT4G its faster, but what about both phones rooted? Should i get the Vibrant? Or even both phones rooted, the myTouch its still better?
EDIT: Also, are the Samsung Vibrant and the Samsung Captivate the exact same device? Under the hood, of course.

Well, I absolutely love my vibrant. Plenty fast (q score 1600+), amoled screen rules, and camera takes amazing pix. Flash isn't an issue since I don't really take pix in the dark lol.
It has less ram, but its near impossible to hard brick from what I've read. I'd say go vibrant, and if you don't like it, flash back to stock and exchange for the mt4g.

My problem its that im buying it second hand, so its not as easy as i"f i dont like it, i just take it back..." So thats why i have to make the right choice, because oncei buy the phone, its going to be difficult to sell it again.
Well, I'd say that if you don't have 4g coverage, why buy a 4g phone. Its like buying a Ferrari when you live in Poland. Maybe not as expensive, but you can't take full advantage of it. Lol.
Do you have any questions about the phone itself? Not spec wise?

If you are into gaming, then vibrant hands down. Here are the things I would take into consideration.
1. Bigger dev community for the mytouch4g. I think most of the people with the vibrant will be leaving for the Sensation or the galaxy 2 if they have the funds. I am going with the galaxy S 2 myself. With that being said the development will dwindle down to nothing by the end of the summer.
2. There are great roms for the vibrant right now. Trigger, Bionix, and a bunch of stable 2.2.1 roms to choose from.
3. I don't know if a stable cm7 will ever happen for the vibrant. They have it working ok. Plenty of bugs, and bad battery. Also no 2.3 rom has working gps because of drivers. You will have to wait on a leaked 2.3 rom for the vibrant I think.
I love my vibrant for gaming. I have about 5 Gameloft games.. bogo for $2.99 . Can't beat that. And the phone handles them beautifully. I am running Trigger btw, just because I wanted a stable rom until I get the galaxy 2 .
I hope this helps with your decision, I know I rambled a bit. But I think i covered everything on the development side for you.

On top of what everyone else said, Voodoo sound on the vibrant makes listening to music through the 3.5 mm jack a dream. I can't go back now. It's just too good.

how to root and unlock bootloader without computer?

I don't really have a computer. My phone IS my computer. How do I root this thing and install CWM without a computer?
By the way, my atrix has over 1,000 more quadrant scores than the note, WTF?! ? I THOUGHT THIS WAS Samsung's fastest device? This is F-- ing pathetic. My atrix came out before the iPhone 4 over a year and a half ago.. I just got ripped off.... only 2700 quadrant, are you kidding me??
We don't have CWM available yet to us. We do have a modified 3e recovery, which is flashable via Odin. Unfortunately, you need a computer to install the recovery and OC/root kernel.

Lame. This phone is so slow
First, the bootloader on this phone is not locked. Secondly, its a fast phone. My scores were higher than that even before I installed the root/oc kernel.

That was the old quadrant probably then. On the old quadrant, my atrix got 5300+ easily. On the new one it gets like 4,000. This thing gets like 2700. What a bunch of crap. The FIRST dual core phone ever made is faster than my new $700 phone.... lawl.

Be a little patient. Once the devs have a little more time with this device cooking up some roms and tweaks for it.
If all you are concerned with is your quadrant score you will be disappointed. On all the devices I have had the smoothest and fastest roms had slow quadrant scores.

I had 3d cube transitions everywhere in my interface. Clocked at 1450mhz I had no lag at all. On ICS 4.0.3, it didn't even lag at stock clocks with the heavy interface. Games NEVER LAGGED on the Atrix, even underclocked to 800mhz.
Oh, and ive been using it for a year and a half. The atrix came out before the iphone 4.

An idiot would say that. I love my Note. I sold my atrrix for $150 and bought Alpine door speakers already for my car from that. I'm extremely happy with that.
What I'm pissed off about is that technology isn't getting any better as fast as it should. Moors law is dead.

[Q] would it be ridiculous for me to come back to this phone?

ok, so i have an SGS4G now, and i've had it for about a year now (since when it came out, not exactly sure how long ago that was ) and at the time of my getting it, i had a vibrant. i didn't know much of anything about customizing android phones at the time and randomly one night i was like "i wonder what i can do to hack this thing". so i rooted my vibrant but never installed a rom or kernel cuz as i said, i had no clue what it really was.
but my question is, would it be ridiculous for me to go back to the vibrant? i mean i LOVE my SGS4G, but there is so much more available for the vibrant. and i don't really use my FFC and i'm on wifi for a lot of the day so i don't think only having 3g would be a big issue for me.
thanks for your input.
well if you want to flash custom roms then the vibe is the way to go as it has more development going than the 4g.

I'm due for my upgrade soon, and am finding it very difficult to find a replacement that offers as much. Never mind development, new phones are just not hitting the mark. Either the resolution is piss poor (SGS2), or removable storage is missing (Galaxy Nexus), or there's no removable battery (One S), or no development or support (Blaze 4g) etc.. This phone offered everything when it was released, and now I'm spoiled.

I agree 100%. I had a choice between a Nexus S and this and I chose this and never looked back. This is a great phone to learn on but also it is extremely user friendly and now with all the ICS ROMs and many devs coming back on one form or another, it should be a no brainer. Does that extra G really make that much difference?
That's my question really. And I also wonder how the battery life is on the vibrant with custom Roms and kernels and whats the best combo?

You've already got that 1650mah battery from the 4g, and the Epic Touch's 1800mah also fits in the Vibrant, so battery life has gotten pretty good lately. Not to mention ICS ROMs, like AOKP, get very good battery life.

With Passion 13 RC1 and Ice Kiss Kernel 8.2 I was able to charge my phone every two days... amazing battery life... 3g always on! the only issue is that GPS breaks after deep sleep, so if you need that, it might be a pain in the ass..
right now I am using CM9 + SubZero Kernel #70. Battery life is not as good as the mentioned above, but it works very well. And GPS doesn't break after DS, as long as you get a lock once the system starts (first time at boot).

How is the Vibrant?

Thinking about getting one. I know someone who has a t-mobile one.
Is it easy to root/unlock. I'd love to play with CM10 on it does it run well?
Other than GPS and intermittent 911 issues, the CM10 based ROMs that I've used run nicely.
As far as unlocking, you can simply download a free market app that will unlock your Vibrant.
For a phone that has been out now for.... over two years? It still hangs tough with the big boys in my opinion. If you have the opportunity to get one, my advice would be to go ahead and give it a shot. I think you'll like it.
You were just sliced bread before you were burnt by the toaster.
As my boy toaster said, this phone is the little android that could. Samsung and
T-homobile wrote this device off, never updating past froyo. Well the beautiful minds of cyanogen/xda community knew that the capabilities of this device was greater so we got cm7/GB based ROMs. The haters said this device wouldn't run ICS, the great minds proved that it would. Now JB ROMs are running smooth!! My 2 1/2 year old phone is running android 4.1.2, while over 90% of new phones are still on ICS.
If you find a vibrant for sale, for a good price, grab it!
** Make sure its the t959 3g, not a t959v 4g. The t959v has a front facing camera, runs 4g*, and comes with inception on it.
But the t959v only has a 4gb internal SD card vs the vibes 16gb SD card. It is limited because of that, not nearly as many people dev'ing for it.
**very easy to root etc if you read and follow directions!
No tickee, no laundry!
I always go back to this device after using much more expensive ones for some reason. I don't like new phones that lack microSD slot and transfer using MTP mode. My previous S3 had MTP issues that cause transferring to be extremely slow and freeze up midway.
This thing run JellyBean surprisingly smooth. GPS just need an easy hardware fix. It can playback HD MKV videos without problems if you're using the right software. The only lacking thing about this phone is the GPU which can't handle new games anymore.
Side note, I just rebought a Nexus S because my Vibrant charging port broke, but it's actually not as good. Has issue with slow USB transferring with ICS and JB that haven't been fixed since forever. The camera despite LED flash is not as good and worthless for macro and nightshots. I don't understand this, but for a Nexus device, it's actually less stable than the Vibrant with reboots with stock roms. Also Semaphore kernel and its manager app for the Vibrant has more customization than the Nexus S kernels.
With that said this phone is getting dated. I'm still searching for a proper upgrade, with 4-4.3" screen, removable battery, pentaband or with 1700 and 1900 3g band, microsd slot, a better camera, higher than 800x480 res, and Cyanogenmod supported. I haven't found a device that meet these criterias yet, the Blaze come close and just got CM10 supported so it might be better to get than the Vibrant at this point. Looking at new phones, some missing features of the LG Nexus 4 is more if a backward step to me than an upgrade. The S3 mini looks more like a lackluster attempt by Samsung to cash off their S3 popularity, I might had been interested if it had a higher res screen.

Yep! My daily phone since my Droid Inc 4G broke. Don't think I'm getting another HTC phone but that's beside the point. I'm using the Jelly Bean ALPHA CM 10 rom. It's extremely buggy. Usable, but extremely buggy.
Motorola Droid X2
Just got one for my wife on straight talk , running eclipse v 2.3
Just got 2 of them from my parents.
Upgraded the wife and myself from our OG Dinc's
Unfortunately it seems the Incredibles were better phones.
Even after rooting, running Eclipse, debloating and running V6 Supercharger.....these are the laggiest pieces of crap ever...
My wife says if she ever needed to call 911 she'd get on her computer.....go to the verizon website.....deactivate the DX2....re-activate the Dinc and make the 911 call on that....it'd be faster than trying to dial on the DX2....
But hey - the larger screen is nice....
Dan
better idea..
Or, instead of developing for this phone your self you could teach me how to develop ROM's for android and I could do it myself!
I have newer devices for work, but I still use my dx2 as my personal phone.
Heck Yeah!

My DX2 rocks. CM7 if very fast...only 2 real issues are wifi dropping out sometimes and dialer lagging when dialing out a bit... Still a solid phone.
Yes...do it for Tracfone Users
This phone is getting a lot of interest as an eligible BYOP alternative for Tracfone Android users. It would be great if someone could help folks like me find a decent, cheap phone that would work for this network.
Is the phone really as slow and doggy as some have mentioned?
Tracfone BYOP requires a non-LTE CDMA phone...users are looking for larger than 3.5 inch screen with more than single core 1Gb processor...any suggestions?
My X2 is still in use. Running Eclipse and working great.
That is exactly why I bought my dx2, except for straight talk byop. I've found eclipse to be the most stable and feature inclusive ROM so far, and am really enjoying this phone even if it doesn't have ics, jb, or kk. Especially like that it's on Verizon - best coverage hands down in my neck of the woods.

I am also running eclipse on my x2, no issues except my RAM gets pretty low sometimes

yep, daily
Yes, using this phone daily. Just flashed it for the first time with eclipse 2.3 last night and I'm happy with the functionality so far.was hoping to see an improvement with battery life, and fix some issues I had with stick, and so far so good.
I am still using the X2 with Eclipse ROM. It does seem to be slowing down though so I'll probably need to reset it.

Where would be a good jumping off point for this phone? I have a friend who's stuck with it, and I've tried a few of the root guides but there's missing files, bad redirects, and just generally dated info. I just want to root it and probably put a slim rom, and by your review I'll probably go with Eclipse. I tried the zerg root but it threw an error that the phone was write protected. All help is greatly appreciated

I use Pete's Motorola root tools for Droid 3 and it worked for my X2. At work right now. If you can't find it, I will upload a link when I get home in 6hrs
