Galaxy S2 battery while playing 720p MKV. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so how long does it take till the baterry is drained to 10% while playing a 720p MKV. Anyone tested? Going on a trip tomorrow and not quite sure how will it last me.
Thanks in advance.

I meant HD m8 not SD but thanks anyway...

From full charge to power off, its about 9hrs to 9hrs and 30mins.

thank you m8 but are you sure the 9 hours are for HD playing

display brightness is very important for battery consumption, so make sure you have manual brighness at lowest % to maximize movie time.

Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Play MKV on Samsung Galaxy S/S2/Infuse 4G/Tab...
you will find a simple solution

IMO you should resize/convert/whatever it to a lower, SD resolution since you won't really be watching it in 720p anyway

Does anyone can have this duration as well?
On my side, I only use Go sms pro, with all the other features set to off, and I can only use the phone at maximum 5h.
About HD video, I'm loosing about 10% every 30mn. According to EarlZ, I should lose 10% every hour.
Can you advise which rom to use for the white version?
I precise the white version, cause I'd try several rom and kernel and the colour are not the same : with a same picture I can confirm that the colour looks darkers with the newest rom/firmware.

Post your battery temp and drain for reference please

I am a long time owner of the Galaxy S that has recently bought the S II.
Comparing to the previous model the S II heats up real bad with my usage and the battery drains incredibly fast. When running 10 min of flash video, my battery temp shoots up to over 50C and it drains over 20% of my battery. This is even with the May 11 ROM release.
So i would like to ask other owners to post their results with a flash video as reference (i used the video on watch futurama online S2E1 as my test if you could use the same one maby). Running full screen for 10 min at lowest brightness what is your battery temp and how much battery is drained (i use Smart Battery Monitor to get those values)?
Thank you.
I think it's Flash - it will always be a power hog.
720p YouTube video doesn't even run smoothly on my Macbook Pro, so it's going to be a challenge for the SGS2.
Its not just flash. Games, market and some other stuff also causes the same thing. As i said Galaxy S didnt have such problems with runnin flash or any other content... i want to hear from other users if they are expiriencing the same problems or if my cellphone is defective.
When it is on standby it is lik 1% -2% an hour. When I just touch it and play some games or browse the web, I just see the % go by fast.
Yesterday i downloaded some games, browsed the web and played the games. 26% lost in 45 minutes.
So its not just mine.. this sounds horrible. Anyone else confirm this? Also post the 10min test result with temp and drain?
I played a game for 20 minutes, lost 20%. And that's with almost all games.
General usage - 35c
Heavy usage - 40c
Idle - 29c
Charging with no usae - 41c
Charging with usage - 44c
And when i put my case in the temp increases about 4c on average... So now when i charge it i put it near my air con. Battery is good lasts me a day
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
So battery does drain that fast... what is heavy usage for you?
Can you please just run 10 min of the video i did on wifi and tell me what peak temp you get exactly with it and exactly how much it drained the battery... anyone just so i can compare my results, its just 10 minutes of your time.

Really??? Videos 1080p Youtube run smoothly on my GS2, no problem at all. After updated to the newest firmware (KE7), CPU temperature is noticeable lower when playing game for me, and battery life improves too
I noticed a decrease in temperature with latest firmware too, but how much exactly is your max temp now? Give me some numbers...?
I had max 41c after 15min of game and down to 32c after 3min
Thank you. After the last update from Kies i also had a max of 42C after 15 min of watching a flash video. Before the update the same flash video made it shot up to 58C.

[Q] *Question* :Better Battery life for the A70IT.

The battery life of my Archos 70 Internet Tablet
isnt very well,

Well here is what I do everyday :
When I'm at home my WiFi is always on.
The volume is mostly muted or I use my headset.
At home I use the minum screen light.
At home I'm playing apps like : Pocket Legends.(ONLINE GAMES).
Or I'm watching YouTube also I'm online on Windows Live Messenger but mostly skype,
talking with friends.
I use my Archos 3-4Hours/day...
But when I noticed that my battery drowns that fast was when I was flying to Cuba.
The flight from Paris to Cuba was 10Hours =S I thought I'll have enough for like a day but no =( I watched a whole Simpsons season aprox 4hours and I played a few apps...But still drowns to fast !
My friend has a home-tab and his battery life is enough for 3days !!!!!!
He came to stay at my home for 4 days but he forgot his cable .
Plox Help =)
Are you sure that you ever so slightly have read the specs of the A70it?
http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archos_70it/specs.html?country=fr&lang=fr
It says there up to 7 Hours of video, which is under optimal conditions.
If you can watch movies for 4 hours, and play some games then that is perfectly inside of the specs.
If your friend can watch movies for 3 Days, he should try to sell that thing for alot of money.
And for your normal use, Display on, wifi on and Skype are responsible for the fast drain.
Disable skype and syncing that your tab can sleep while off, you can get a week when you just surf a bit.

Thanks =) I never Syncd =S I dont know what that is =S... Nvm.
My friend didnt watch movies he played apps on DARK screen minimum screen light.
Well it seems that my battery is pretty good Thanks =)
You don't have to sync, but you probably didn't switch autosyncing off.
I switched background sync off !
I save up to 3% of battery !! =O !
Thats pretty cool :>.
But anyway's thanks for the help =).
Is this a 250GB version of the A70IT or the 8GB? I have both and the former is ridiculous for battery life!
The problem is that probably the hdd doesn't spin down.
The new G9 hdd versions have a seagate with a small ssd, and that will spin down well.
What sw do you have on that 70H?
thanks for this information mate

[Q] watching online flash videos/playing hd games eats away battery while chargi

hi all!
i recently noticed that while im watching some flash videos online (not the youtube one or the videos that the player can play) for about an hour or so that it drains my battery eventhough my phone is connected to the charger. (i didnt noticed how much but it really drained it)
i noticed this too when i got addicted at dungeon hunter. 1 hour of playing while charging and the battery got drained by 12%.
any one also experienced this?
is my battery broken?
i got my x10 last 2 months and bought it brand new and using stock rom and kernel with fps uncapped
Yeah mate, that's normal. I stream a lot of HD quality stuff, and am addicted to pocket legends.
Takes 5 hours non-stop videos and phone reaches 0%. Plugged in. Pocket legends with brightness on full and wifi connected lasts three. Again plugged in.
You can reduce brightness and volume to save some power, but that's it. I do have o/c to 1113 MHz so on stock it may last a little longer, but the o/c makes it smooth so that's better for me.
Also read omega reds post about battery optimization/calibration. I used it and got about a 20% boost in battery life.
Hope this helps.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
thanks for confirming this.
i was about to buy a new battery thinking my battery now is broken

My battery test is underway-Complete! 9+ hours video!

I decided to run my own battery test this morning. I created a 720p video copy from my Cars blu-ray. Copied to my Evo LTE, and started playing it on MX video player. It will play the movie over and over until I stop it. I'm trying to simulate watching video on a long flight, so I put it into airplane mode. Brightness is set to auto.
So far, the video has been playing 3 hours and 25 minutes. My battery is showing 66% remaining. So far so good. If the battery percentage is accurate, I should get 9+ hours out of this, possibly 10. I'll keep it running and see how long it goes.
Mark
Awesome! Can't wait for your results.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
It's been playing for 6 hours now and the battery has 40% left. The phones seems to use about 10% per hour. Let's see if it will get up to 10 hours.
So far, I'm very impressed. My old Evo didn't last long at all playing videos during my plane flights.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the 720p video looks amazing!!!!
Mark
Ok, so I stopped the video when my phone hit 10% battery life. The phone continued to use approximately 10% of the battery life per hour. So the final play time was 9 hours and 8 minutes. It would be very close to 10 hours if I kept going. Excellent battery life if you ask me!
(the screen shot was taken after plugging the phone in to start charging her back up. that's why you see 11% and the charging icon)
Mark
Not to shabby. It can only get better with some custom ROMs & Kernels, to maximize battery life.

Really? He gets ten hours out of a mobile phone playing 720p video and all you got is "Not too shabby"? When my Galaxy Tab was new I did a test with a video at native resolution in airplane mode and got like 5 hours of video. Considering the size of both batteries, I'd say ten hours is fricken bloody phenomenal.
As a different comparison of usage, I played about 3.5 hours of video over wi-fi on my LTE on Friday. The first half hour was through the flash player, and the latter 3 hours via the twitch.tv app. I did also have it off the charger for like 9 hours entirely and made a short phone call too. Not only is the battery on the LTE amazing, the frugalness of the hardware in using it is also.

lol. +1. This is so true and funny
Here are the video details if anyone is curious. I'm not sure if things like bit rate affect battery life.
just for comparison.
i did a similar test with my OG Evo, 4 hours it would play movies then it shut off at 0%
OP, your results are impressive. Can you post more information? I'd like to know about the audio stream. And also at what speaker volume were you playing the movie?

[TIP] [Video Playback with regards to battery drain]

Hey guys, I'm just sharing some knowledge that I stumbled upon 2days ago. It concerns video playback and conserving battery power on our Ace.
I use MX Video Player for viewing videos and like most I would just copy the .avi file or mp4 file straight onto my sd card. What I also try is to underclock the processor to conserve some battery and the speed I would usually use is 614mhz, to get a smooth playback.
However over the last couple days it just hit me "let me try to convert that avi file, see how much space I can save" so I fired up AVS Video Converter and chose the android tab and found the ace screen resolution (480x320). A typical avi file is around 700mb but with the conversion, most files are around 380mb, but that is not the great thing. Upon further inspection, I get smooth video playback (i.e. around 30fps) while using a very low cpu frequency of 245mhz.
Now I did some testing and waw, what a difference it makes I got like 5% battery drain for every 30mins of video played which is a lot better than the 614mhz.
I just thought I would share this for anyone who uses their phone to watch movies while out and about, it can save you some good juice, give it a try, it worked wonders for me.
Ok guys I did some more testing and this is what I got:
I tested by watching the same video clip (28mins) and recorded the amount of battery drain, then I let the phone charge back up to 100% and did the tests again using different frequencies. I did a stock (800mhz), powersaver (614mhz) and finally the ultimate battery (245mhz)
STOCK (800mhz)
14% battery drain
Powersaver (614mhz)
9% battery drain
Ultimate battery (245mhz)
5% battery drain
Note that the cpu governor was smartass v2, I did another set of benchmarks with the ondemand governor and I did not notice a big battery hit, only at the stock (800mhz) where the battery drain increased by 1%
EDIT: also I was not using the loud speaker, I used my skullcandy ink'd earbuds with the volume at 3.
I got more battery drain
I watch 6 hours movies anime etc
Then battery is at 25%

Hummm...that is strange, i've been getting really good results
Battery reading are pretty awful on ace
Interesting, I tried to underclock my phone's cpu power to 245MHz but the video play was not smooth at all, I then finally kept it at 320MHz
Why you used MX player? Coz video quality is good only when SW decoder is used, which is hell laggy at low Mhz. You could also have used integrated video player with the same settings you mentioned.
Any thoughts...??

I really did not try that honestly, and it uses the HW decoder, I don't choose, it selects it automatically.

6hours is good, no? How many hours of video/music playback is the phone supposed to give? Can't find the info anywhere. Also where do you leave your brightness setting to?
I got a free S5830 from someone who upgraded to something else (rooted it, installed CM10.1), and i get only 2 1/2 hours video playback (or even when playing around with settings and the screen is being used - was the same with Gingerbread 2.3.6). I'd think that the battery needs replacing (has Aug/2011 date on it), but when it's left on standby the battery drains at the normal pace it's supposed to drain at. Does that still mean the battery needs replacing?
Are you using the original Samsung battery or did you replace it?

If I play games on Cm 10.1 the battery lasts about 2 hours. So 2 1/2 hours could be normal.

Considering how quickly the battery drains on my ace, i'd say that this is a good amount of time
