Anyone Have a Truly Correctly Function Photon for Calls? - Motorola Photon 4G

Do you actually use it as a phone or just as a multi media device?
I had two out of two with big problems and had to go back to my ancient BB and a friend in NH is now on his third and that one has now exhibited the issues on day 2.
I have hearing issues and even with hearing aids my hearing sucks.....so I would love to find that there is a Photon somewhere that works right because I found the earpiece and rear speaker to be wonderful for my hearing issues.
Seriously...has anyone not had the phone freeze up and shut off, lock up when attempting to answer a call, have calls not come through and simply go to voice mail and not had the silent call issues???
I really need it to be able to be used for voice communications for my personal and professional buisnesses.
Maybe I just need to get one some place other than Best Buy?

Yes, I have never had a problem with calls. I have never had freeze ups when answering a call. I didn't have it very long before putting mr3 on it. But the only freeze ups I've had, were when I was plugged in with Wifi on, and tried to turn on usb mode.
Loving this Mopho!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I use my phone for multiple operations and phone calls have never glitched out on me either. Everything seems to be working properly and I use it all day every day.

Also there is supposed to be an ota update very soon addressing these problems.
Loving this Mopho!

I use ghe MoPho for phone calls as well as Internet browsing. I have not had any problems with phone calls, although I have had some problems connecting to 4G sometimes.
So, yes, as a phone it works perfectly for me.

I also use my phone for everything and haven't had any issue! for me this phone is by far the best i have used both speed and battery life! there are tickets open with sprint and the Motorola and there addressing the issue. so your not alone!

I have to reboot my phone every morning in order to not have the silent call issue. I just flashed the mr3, hopefully it fixes it.

i had a lot of issues with the "silent" calls at first but they seem less frequent now. I look forward to a full fix

Morning kcsheets. Nice to see you here, anyways, I too also use my device for calls (I have an army of kids and a wife that call me often), Sprint is aware of the issue, and no telling when, but it is software related that would need a patch.
Just waiting for that now.
I use my device for everything as I have a demanding job as a technician, but I currently haven't had this issue at all.

I've also never had any problems with the phone freezing or whatever on calls. So far the only time it has froze up on me was yesterday, the phone crashed and rebooted.

I have never had any issues like these. Works perfect for me. Best phone that actually has awesome call quality and awesome speaker quality of any Sprint smartphone. I hate to hear some people are having issues like the OP stated. Sort of hard to believe actually because I've had 0 issues since I've had mine.

I've had one reboot, that's it. No other issues with 2 different Photons. I returned my first one (power button was offset and jiggly, I'm rather picky)...the 2nd Photon is solid in every way. Got both from Sprint.

I haven't had any silent call issues, phone freezes, or random shut offs. My MoPho works great and this is the best phone I've had so far!!

No phone problems here.....actually no problems thus far

I'm coming from a Blackberry curve (an old one) and the MoPho phone itself is waaaaay better as a phone. The speaker is much clearer and people on the other end say they hear me better.
However, I switched to Sprint from Verizon and the reception is not as good so there's that. Not the phone's fault though.

No problems with calls - yet, but I've had the phone for less than a week and not made many calls. I have had to reboot after installing some apps but I guess that's to be expected.

Mine came from a Sprint store and yes, I've had all but the phone shut off happen to me. I've gotten into the habit of powering completely down once a day to clear out the bugs.
Overall, the phone is exceptional so this quirk/glitch isn't compelling for me to return the phone and hopefully a fix is eminent.

I have had calls that when answered I could not hear the person on the other line, nor could I make calls and hear anything even when it showed a connection. I had to reboot to clear this issue.

So I went into my local Sprint store today and I asked if Sprint was aware of certain issues with the Photon. I know most of the techs there and they checked their internal report list. From what I read on their computer there are known issues that are currently being resolved by Motorola and Sprint. They expect to have an update to correct several issues, the major issue being the silent phone call bug. I asked when the update would be released and they said it was within the month.
At least they are working on issues!

Fixing the Silent Bug

I just bought my wife a used Eris and it turns out that it has the silent bug. It is a non-rooted phone running 2.1. What would you try to fix it?
1) update the radio (if so, to what)?
2) update the ROM (if so, to what)?
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Whenever I had the silent bug, I would fix it by slamming my phone against the palm of my hand, it really works. At least for me.
Thanks. Any other ideas out there?
Anyone? Any information is appreciated.
depends on if its hardware or software... software just a reboot or supposedly upgrade will help but if your already running the july ota 2.1....
Eris has a usb-trackball-mic combo port that has a notorious 'bad ground' (other physical trackball-equipped htc devices with similar designed usb-mic ports have the same issue as well) i cant even use the mic or trackball down and left without having the usb plugged in and slightly pulled forward, and barely then will the mic work. also have an issue where incoming bluetooth calls(only way i can use my phone as a phone aside from a wired headset) are rerouted back to my phone immediately upon answer have this problem with numerous roms and headsets
symptoms of this 'bad ground' problem and eventual complete mic failure etc are:
do u have phantom cursor movement whenever you plug in your usb cable into your device? ie. green selector jumping or tracking around the screen even when your device is not handled in any way...(makes it impossible to use the device while its doing this as well as it selects what it wants..lol)
callers asking hello hello hello? then hanging up even when your trying your best to wiggle the usb port or smack your phones microphone on your palm....
attempting to repair this problem (as im on cricket and obviously have no verizon 'warranty' anyways) i followed a write up on here about how to change your trackball and replaced with a new one as well as tried to clean dirty trackball contacts.. my microphone worked ok for like 3 days then went back to broken had no effect on trackball
on the other hand when i have had the silent call bug back when the mic worked, i usually couldnt hear the other person and they could not hear me and usually a restart worked..
hope some of this jibberish helps...
I contacted HTC support about the silent bug and this is what I got in response...
"Thank you for contacting HTC Technical Support. I’ve had to do a bit of research concerning the “silent bug”. Based on what I’ve read, do you mean that the audio goes silent on some calls, where you can’t hear the other party and they can’t hear you? Is rebooting your phone the only way to recover from it?
I can definitely understand your frustration if this is going on. I mean, you basically can’t use your phone sometimes. The latest update for the Eris addresses this issue. Please go to MENU > SETTINGS > ABOUT PHONE > SOFTWARE, and check the software number. The new software is number 2.37.605.4"
Her software number was lower than that, so I rooted her phone and installed xtrsense 4.6.5. She had one issue this morning but she isn't sure if that was because her volume was all the way down or if it was really the problem.
I also downloaded the Sprint radio update ending in 27, because her radio version is stale as well. I found that in the hidden menus using ##778. I am a little bit reluctant to flash that as I can't verify the CD5 #.
I haven't noticed the jumping around cursor and her trackball works OK. So I guess we are in wait and see mode now while I try to figure out what the next fix would be.
Thanks for the responses so far.
Yep

My eris just got hit with both the trackball and the mic problem the other day. At first a swift hit on my palm fixed it for a day. And now the mic doesn't work at all unless my charger is plugged in and pulled toward me as well.
I haven't found any easy, or viable option of replacing the entire charge-trackball-mic block.

Bluetooth Issue

I know there was a thread about this but i cant find it. My Bluetooth randomly disconnects while in a call or while streaming audio. I have 3 different headsets so i don't think it's specific to a headset. Any solution for this yet?

Must do better!
I had/have the same/other problems with BT. I experienced reboots when my Jawbone Icon or Prime dies or is disconnects. Also voicemail plays thru BT 2 out of 10 times. An incoming call is often lost when the same occurs while in another app. At least one reboot is necessary to get BT to play voicemail or switch headsets. I also have calls drop while on BT.
45.2.7.
2.3.4
Build# 4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_6
Rooted the phone with shabby's OCR (thanks).
I took the phone to Sprint to exchange it. Hoping to determine if the handset was defective or the problem is system software. Long story short they offered to test it & order me a new phone if they could duplicate the problem. Thirty minutes later tech comes out & tells me BT worked fine for him. I insisted he call me, leave VM & play the same on his BT which happened to be a Jawbone ERA. It played for him once and not on subsequent attempts. He tried un/repairing, turning BT off etc. Then conceded to giving me a new Photon from stock rather than making me wait for one to be mailed. We successfully duplicated the VM issue on the new phone.
Twenty-four (24) hours later the new Photon has not had a BT related unexpected reboot. We'll see how long that lasts. However the dropped calls & VM issues are present.
There are threads regarding the issue on Motorola's forum & I have emailed support regarding the issue. I suggest you do to. They can't ignore numerous complaints. Their respone has been slow (3days) & less than stellar. Basically alot of bolier plate BS but they're "ready to help". I might have given the new Samsung Galaxy a try if not for that bogus 30 day guarantee.

[Q] starting a command/call, Bluetooth/wired headset

I use a wired headset which functions like a Bluetooth headset in that you can initiate a call by pressing a button. The problem I have is when the screen goes to sleep I cannot initiate a call. I have to wake the screen up before the phone responds to pudding the headset button. Obviously this is not good. Hands free is hands free. Does anyone have the same problem? What happens with Bluetooth users?
interested in what the response is here...
longtime iphone user who just switched to the ATT Skyrocket (basically the galaxy s2 with LTE) and really not happy with android. samsung did NOT include headset (bluetooth or wired) initiated voice dialing with this phone and it is a vital feature to me. i just figured ALL phones nowadays had this feature and for a 250 dollar phone to not have it was ridiculous to me.
so now i'm thinking about using my one switch (still within the 30 days) to use windows phone instead and was wondering how the bluetooth performance is on the titan.
Check out the thread about 'The other party can't hear me clearly. No high-frequency'. There was one person that posted a solution and it was using Bluetooth... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20299518#post20299518
You might PM him and see what kind of response you get.
My phone is a week old and except for the hurdle of no outlook sync and this thread, I am totally happy at this point. Battery life could be better but I am playing with it soooo much it would be the smae with my old phone.
Consider this one resolved... found where the setting is and it works fine.

I should have shared my findings earlier but I was a little miffed about the number of views and the lack of responses.
I've posted here enough times to prove myself and have always replied when I can help. I am new to WP7 but have been a long time WM user. I just thought it was odd that mo one posted up an answer.
Plus I was having a bad day which is very unusual for me.

[Q] Conference Call Audio Woes

I have searched the forums in hopes that I would find a similar issue to no avail. It seems that whenever I receive a conference call I am having issues hearing the one of the callers.
For instance, my boss will call me and then we will connect to a third person. I will be able to hear my boss just fine, but the third person's audio will go in and out. When the 3rd person starts talking, I will hear them ok but then their voice will start to trail off.
Does anyone have similar issues or do I just have a lemon?
It's a hardware problem

My wife has this, and found several threads on AndroidForums on this. Basically, it's a design issue with the HTC One, regardless of carrier. I'm working to get hers replaced now.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate because the phone is rock solid otherwise. But I am way past the return policy and I just deal with it since the phone works well in every other department.
Was having mic issues sort of similar to yours but I've seen others report that. Had mine replaced and I had to yell into the.mic. sold my HTC one to pay it off and got the nexus 5. No mic issues. Haven't tried conference but well see.

Voice echoing on other end of phone call?

EDIT: Read the other comments in this thread to see what I've tried and what hasn't worked. Thank you!
I love my Galaxy S5 so far, but currently it's sucking at being an actual phone. On the other end of the phone line, the people I've talked to have complained of the audio sort of cutting in and out like someone is interrupting me. This happens when I'm in quiet rooms alone, so I'm confused. At first I though it was the case on my phone (Supcase), but after replicating the problem for myself, that doesn't seem to be the case. So at this point I'm not really sure if my phone is possessed or if it's a hardware problem. For reference, I'm running XtreSoLite rom and I have a few Viper4Android audio things running. I'm not sure if that could be the problem. Anyway, if someone could help me solve this issue, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

It's certainly not normal. Not with stock firmware or custom ROMs like Phoenix. I have no idea if your custom ROM is a factor, bit it seems unlikely.
Possibly your problems are reflective of being in a location with a weak and tenuous signal strength. Generally speaking dropouts and feedback are data latency issues seen more with Voip and VoLTE calls. You don't have nearly enough information to do more than guess yet.. but I would make your audio app (Viper) to be the prime suspect.
See if you can exempt voice calls from Viper or temporarily uninstall it. Also find out if any background apps are using high CPU and in particular if any audio apps are set to high priority. Find out if you arwe using VoLTE. CPU (power saving) apps?
If you can't narrow it down, make a backup and then revert to 100% stock to rule out hardware issues. Then install apps one at a time, watching for the issue to return. You could also open a carrier support ticket to see if your account is misconfigured, using a low grade codec, etc.

Thank you for all of this! I'm having an unfortunate week because I'm actually away from home and have very limited internet access, so factory resetting my phone isn't currently an option. However, I did turn VoLTE off and I'll be wiping my cache because I read somewhere that might work. I'll also be watching my apps, but I'm not sure that's the problem. I generally have the same apps on all of the phones I use and this is the only phone people have said I sound bad on. And I don't think Viper is the culprit either because I've disabled it and nothing has changed. So hopefully turning off VoLTE works or simply wiping the cache does the trick. If not, I'll definitely do everything that you recommended because I want to avoid RMAing this device at all costs.
It seems that a factory reset solved the problem. I still have no idea what the problem was, though, but I'm happy it seems to be gone.
So the problem has returned. I factory reset once again and it hasn't done the trick. Everyone is describing it as an echo and telling me they can hear themselves echoing when they speak, although it sounds fine on my end. I don't know what else to do. I have:
Factory reset
Taken the sim out and put it back in
Changed APNs
I don't know what else I can do. Really hoping I don't have to RMA this device. Does anyone know how Samsung is with RMAs?
Bump
Still having this problem. I hope there's someone out there who knows how to fix it.
you ain't alone mine was fine for a while then after the new update it came back i call t-mobile.they put in a open repair tickets as others around my town also complain.my signal is always -114 to -119.they have heard it it when i call them.i get the echo or it brakes up or call turns into noise and then calls drop and they have to call me back on house phone they claim it is a tower/signal issue.??

i had this on my first two handsets it happened in the first 14 days so i had no trouble going into tmo store and exchanging it twice. people could not hear me and the echo was really bad. third s5 call quality super clear now.
been you had exchange the phone and new one working fine what software is it on NF6 or the new NG3 that would tell us a lot???before i downgrade back to the nf6

I had this same issue as well. I could hear people jsut fine, but when they tried to talk to me, be it over tmo network or through wifi calling, they heard bad echoes and noise. I even did as you did; factory reset and it sorta worked. When it happened again, I cleared caches (the official fix from tmo 611) and that worked for a couple hours. Eventually, they told me to take it back to the store and get a replacement.
I believe it's a hardware issue related to the mic; here's why:
When I'm in my car and on bluetooth people on other end hear me just fine and crystal clear. When I used a bluetooth headset, same thing. As soon as I disconnect from BT and go to just the normal mic, echo pops in.
One thing you can do is call 611 and use the voice prompts. It was so bad on my end that the voice prompts picked up itself (well the echoes from the voice prompts). If you do and the voice prompt system routs you even when you don't say anything (it routes your call because of the echoes) then you definitely have a bad handset.
I was rooted, custom recovery, knox tripped and mailed my phone in. Nothing happened. But they did charge me $20 for a return/replacement fee. The new phone I got works no problem.
