UK phone in US - 3G does not work. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just purchased a SG SII here in the US and later found out it is a UK phone (the sales rep said it was a US model)
anyway, the phone works great EXCEPT it will not log onto T-Mobiles 3G network. All I get is EDGE which is terrible.
How can I get it to go to 3G?
Spoke with T-Mobile, even got a new sim card. No help
Spoke wth Samsung US - they tried, could not help and then said to contact the UK.
Called Samsung UK and they said it should work, if not, bring it back as it is broken!
anyway, is there some sort of settings that I can change to make it work in the US.
I also need it to work in Brazil as I will be going there and will be using the Brazilian Tim network and installing their sim card.
thank you for your assistance in advance.

The phone is suppose to be:
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Did you limit the phone to only work with 2G in the settings?
Check Wireless Network settings.
Much more better would be goto Settings->About phone, tell us what Baseband, and Kernel, and ROM version you are using.

Reboot phone.

Exactly, that phone will never work on T-Mobile USA 3G network, refund it or switch to AT&T. Makes you wish someone would regulate mobile networks here.
Edit: SGS2 should work fine on TIM Brazil.

you guys are absolutely certain that this phone will not work on T-Mobile?
what about certainty that it will work on Tim? I live in Brazil and defintely need it to work there.
Here, in the US, when I return next year, I can alway switch over to AT+T.
I need to be certain because if I get to brazil and it does not work, I am screwed because then it is almost impossible to get anything done to it.
BTW- they have been saying that t-mobile will have this same phone in a few months. How will that one be able to work? will it be possible to flash that info to this phone when it comes out?
thanks

The US T-mobile Variant is completely different from the UK model, won't be the same. Also it's true you can never get 3G with T-Mobile, don't know anything about TIM though.

T-Mobile uses the 1700 AWS band which this phone does not use so yes... You will NEVER get 3g or HSPA+ with T-Mobile U.S.

so when you say fine, the phone, 3g to get to the internet, etc etc will all work?
as it is here, the phone works great and when with wi-fi, the internet is great but EDGE sucks ass.
So, as I already know that I am beating the dead horse. 3G here with T-Mobile is never going to happen but it will work with AT+T, in Brazil, the phone for calls will work fine, 3G will also work fine too.
does anyone know about claro, vivo or oi in brazil? just wondering....
and what about other carriers in the US, will it work with anyone beside AT+T?
thanks again. this has been very useful!

EDGE runs on GPRS. Your phone matches TIM's UMTS frequencies so it will have 3G data on that network.

Why would you buy a phone without checking on what radio bands it works , its not like US has only one provider they all have different bands/frequencies.

so if I have been schooled properly. T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100, so without the 1700 band, it wont work!
I guess I got to talk with AT+T
will any other carrier in the US support this?????

it seems that only T-Mobile and a few Canadian carriers (and cincinati bell) use the 1700 network! I wonder why?
they need to join the rest of the world and get on board with 2100!

[Q] where to buy in canada

Anyone that got the s2 in canada, can you share where you ordered this phone from, please ? I really want so bad but can't find where to order.
From what i heard , this phone even if it europ, it will work with us and canada providers?
Thank you.
I got mine on Ebay.
The phone supports (GSM/GPRS/EDGE): 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz
UMTS: 850, 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz bands.
Telus/Bell/Robbers/SaskTel/MTS use 1900 and 850 UMTS for 3G/4G/HSPA.
Don't know what bands the other providers use so I couldn't tell you if it would work on Wind, public, etc.
Hey,
So this phone works no problem in Canada? I'm on Rogers and I'm looking to buy an i9100 off the net.
Any idea if the NFC works?
Thanks
I'm on Rogers too. I ordered mine from Expansys on Friday...Fedex says it will be here tomorrow. Since Rogers uses the 850Mhz band for 3G/HSPA I'm sure it will work just fine.
I ordered mine from Expansys.ca

The current devices do NOT have NFC.
As for NFC in Canada? I suspect it will be a few years before Canada is NFC ready. Canada is usually pretty slow in adopting new technology.
Look how long it took Canada to finally roll out Chip and PIN debit/credit cards.
Even so, our Chip and Pin cards still have magnetic stripes on them for the merchants that haven't upgraded yet. Which means our brand new Chip & Pin cards can still be easily skimmed.
yup... you gonna just love this beast!!! have mine since two week now..and very satisfy of course!!
i"m on rogers....but would work on any gsm network in canada...even on telus!! they use simcard for their hspa+.....and i"m not sure but bell who is using cdma band offer simcard, so i presume some phone could work on their network??

Bell and Telus actually share the same HSPA+ infrastructure. They combined their resources to build it together
Ths SG2 will work on all of Canada's "big 3 Carriers" (and anybody that uses their network).
However, it won't work with Wind/Moblicity or anybody else that piggybacks off their network (well..you'll be stuck on 2G)

[Q] 3g/4g on t-mobile US

I recently purchased an unlock galaxy s2 i9100. It is supposed to be GSM unlock with HSPA+ 21Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps, EDGE/GPRS Class 12, Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900, Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 hardware capabilities. since I have gotten the phone i have not been able to connect to anything but edge. Tmobile assured me i had the correct APN setting. I would like to know if anyone know what I could to to enable the HSPA+ T mobile US uses UMTS 2100 to connect. I rooted and flashed the lite'ning rom.

Nope you won't get hspa speeds on Tmobile with the current international version. You have to wait for the Tmobile variant. International version gets
3g speeds only on att.

This is correct. However, it's only used for one way traffic (either uploading or downloading, i'm not sure which). UMTS 1700 is used for the other direction of traffic on T-Mobile. This means no 3G/4G without both frequencies.
Your 2 options:
1. Get a T-Mobile phone.
2. Switch to AT&T.

thanks for the quick and concise responses. I have a clarification: does this mean that I when Tmobile comes out with the variant my phone will be able to upgrade to Hspa via a rom or radio update or that if i want to keep this model i will have to wait to swap it out for the tmobile version

The I9100 will NEVER work on T-Mobile. The SGS2 that they are releasing has different HARDWARE. There will never be a way to make the phone you have now work on T-Mobile 3G.
As others have said you'll need a different phone in order to get it to work on T-Mobile USA's 3G/4G frequencies.
You'd need a penta-band phone in order for it to work on all of them. I think Intel is curently working on that or already did but that's all there is. You'd need both 1700/2100mhz in order to use it with 3G.
I don't get how people don't research before they buy!!

Photon in Australia

I moved to Australia this week. I brought my MoPho with me. It was a hassle getting it to work but i figured it out and thought to tell you how it went. I put a Vodafone AU SIM card in my phone but 3G would not work. I knew for a fact i was in a coverage area for 850Mhz 3G so I was pretty annoyed it would not work. Turns out with the Photon you have to manually ass the APN for Vodafone and probably a few others. I was able to get all the settings I needed from here.
http://ausdroid.net/apns/
tl;dr Sometimes when abroad you need to manually add the APN for the carrier.
I need to do that for my carrier too (Slingshot NZ, 850/2100Mhz) but after that it works fine, 3G GSM data is borked on the current ICS build though.
Ya. Im going to wait awhile before i put on another custom ROM. Still trying to get used to everything in Australia. Cant risk being without a phone. Im going to keep an eye on cm9. Until then i only have the precious data connection on my phone which is caped at 4GBs :'(. I miss unlimited.

Well. Thats a tricky question. Bellow i will list the different networks and what they support compared to the photon. Currently all three major carriers can provide 3G to the Photon. Telstra simply has a better network but it has nothing to do with how it interacts with the phone. For both Optus and Vodafone so far i have had to manually set the APNs. It was a ***** with the Optus one because of the separate APNs for internet and mms. Even though optus doesnt have umts850 and the photon doesnt have umts900 i am downloading about 4Mbs in East Killara (Suburb by Sydney) throught Optus' 2100 single band HSDPA+. I have not tested Telstra because they are so freaking expensive.
Photon supports:
800/1900 MHz (EV-DO Rev. A),
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz,
UMTS/WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz (HSPA+ at 14.4 Mbit/s)
OPTUS/Amaysim: (I only recommend for when time is being spent in Capital Cities that support 2100 single band)
GSM - 900/1800
UMTS - 900/2100 (2100 single band)
TELSTRA:
2G - 900/1800
3G - 850/2100 (850 is NextG)
LTE - 1800
Vodafone:
2G - 900/1800
3G - 850/900/2100

Hoping the photon puts my tp2 on the shelf.
I agree with hodie though
Optus is good when your in Melbourne, sydney, perth, etc.but i thought telstra had the better overall service.

3G issue
Hi,
Im from Dominican Republic and I got a Photon, the phone use to works fine with my carrier, but since 2 weeks ago the 3G network is unavailable. My carrier is Claro Dominicana (GSM 850 MHz) and searching for the possible problem I think that one of the motorola update block that band since is the same one as ATT. I had rooted the phone and try with custom roms and also restore it to the stock rom but with no luck. Does anyone have face this issue? Is there a solution for this?
Thanks.

I spoke with AT&T online and on phone customer service YES you can unlock
I can confirm that it is locked. You will have to ask for unlock code. According to Samsung, it is also 850/1900 only, not AWS. So if your 3G towers in your area is using AWS bands, you will have to settle for 2G.
It's unlocked on ATT if you buy it full price without activation. I comfirmed it at the store, then went online to check the IMEI number with the ATT device manager. My gear S is not in their system with the Unlock tool from their website. I went on to talk with technical support on 3 different occasions to confirm that I am totally free to do as I please with my device.
Of course if you activated your Gear S at anytime with ATT I was told that you would be locked into their system and would have to go to procedures to have it unlocked.

Not a chance. The watch only has dual bands. So, North American version can only work in NA. Rest of the world version can only work in rest of the world. They don' overlap. Besides, there isn't any unlocked version on sale unless you buy from eBay.

LG V60 unlocked Lmv600am - works in UK?

Evening all,
Just a bit of advice, I'm looking to upgrade from my g8x to the v60. As the european/international version is virtually impossible to find, I'm looking at the unlocked USA variants of this phone. Does anyone have this model in the UK and can confirm that it works on 3g/4g OK? I've found different sources stating that some of the bands aren't present in the USA variants - not bothered about 5g, just as long as I can get 3 and 4g on o2 it's fine. Also tried frequency checker but it doesn't seem to list the v60 on there for some reason...
OK so I've just come across the website Kimovil, this seems to be more helpful - looks like the only one that is going to be any use is the Canadian variant of the phone, the USA versions from t mobile/at+t have most of the bands missing for use in the UK. Explains why they go for far less online!
Interesting have you got a link to that site or have a link of where to buy one that will be good for UK
Also looking to buy a v60 to use on the UK
Kimovil.com
Not really found anything other than links for the USA versions of the phone, they don't seem to have the correct bands for most of the UK networks. I'm just watching eBay and seeing what comes up...
I bought an ATT model, unlocked from Ebay. I live in The Netherlands and my provider, Simyo, uses the KPN network with 800mhz (band 20) and 1800mhz (band 3) for 4G/LTE. After inserting my sim everything worked right away. Calls, data, no problems at all. My provider does not support 5G yet
Edit: be aware that you will not receive updates like android 11 (if on 10) or security updates on the V600AM.
I bought the V600AM, I'm in the UK and I can confirm that it works with O2. The only issue is that phone will switch to 2G when making voice calls, soon after hang up it will switch back to 4G LTE.

OK that's useful to know, I'm still not sure about 3g support as where I live in the depths of rural Cornwall we seem to struggle a bit with 4g - it's OK when I'm outside but indoors tends to drop back to 3g, I can use wifi at least. Thanks for the info though

Yeah, the 3g coverage is a thing for me as I tend to only get 4g when outside, it reverts to 3g indoors and I think that may be an issue for me with this phone as it needs to be a daily driver - as far as I can see the USA variants don't support the right bands for UK use....

You could force the phone to be on "LTE Only" with an app from Gstore, but then you won't be able to receive and make voice calls. Not ideal, but considering this phone is from a US network,it will never be 100% compatible with UK Networks. If only someone would find a solution to root it!!!
