I need help with my WiFi(constant droputs) - HTC EVO 3D

Router: Netgear Wndr3400
ROM: vipermod
The image below is of a scan I did in WiFi analyzer. Scan frequency of 1 second.
As you can see its very frustrating. And its not like I have a poor signal.
I have searched everywhere and tried many things. (Turning WiFi performance on, messing with the channels)
No dice.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, you didn't list that in your OP. Sounds like a trip to Sprint repair is in order. You've already done the only other fix I've heard of, changing channels.

It's cool. I will keep trying. See if I can diagnose the problem. I have read about others with similar problems with the 3d and my router but no conclusive answer.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

No, no this has to deal with the roms we download. I was on Cm7 and it constantly dropped when i was on my phone surfing the web. Switched to nightley 150+ #build and it did not drop on me. I recently Switched to MIUI and it has started to drop on me, this is frustrating when you need to download a rom.
My only guess is it has to deal with the roms we download. Before anyone says anything no, my wifi is on a NO SLEEP policy, it not likes to drop the wifi while im surfing the web.

It's not the rom. I had the same problem with my EVO3d before and after rooting and trying multiple roms. I tried a different router and haven't had a single problem. It is clearly and issue between the router and the phone. Now I just need to figure out why they don't get along. Ive heard about switching channels but haven't had a chance yet.

Ya, your right its not the rom. I tried switching channels from auto to the one i needed but it didn't help and then i went back to auto and it worked well for a bit. Now it isn't working well.

Notes + im on a HTC Increíble. My router cost me 139$, ive never had a problem vía wifi nor on ethernet. This is strictly something on these roms, trust me ive looked into this alot. The only conclusion is that..
If you think about, did your signal drop with your stock rom? Not mine.. Until i Switched to Cm7 i randomly have connection issues? Lol

You keep mentioning cm7. I'm assuming u do not have an evo3d correct? And my stock phone straight out of the box and after rooting and flashing a custom rom had the same problem with one of my routers. It works just fine with other routers. Also the signal doesnt fade or drop like with my og EVO, it simply disconnects then reconnects 30 seconds later.
Edit: just realized you said u have an incredible. Also no other phone or device, including my old EVO, has had this problem. There must be a setting within my router that isn't playing nice because it is the only router my EVO3d has a problem with.

On my OG evo the only time i had problem with wifi was on cm7 but that was just weak signal. Nothing like this. If you like at my pic in the first post it is scanning every second. so its not like its disconnecting for 30 seconds. Which is weird because it says im connected the whole time.

Hmm, that's odd I am having the same problem but only its not my router.
But yeah, I'm usually on for 30 minutes to an hour and it drops for 20-30 seconds. Disrupting my downloads, I have heard there is a program for I think what you need axe. You said it's refreshing every second? If I'm right I remember seeing you could change your refresh rate somewhere to save battery life too.
So we have the same problem but different issues.
Hmm...
Edit------ My old router was terrible and did not want to cooperate with any of these devices I use. So I bought a 139$ Router and works perfect.

naw the refresh rate i was talking about was just how frequent it scanned the signal strength in wifi analyzer.

Ahh, lol sorry then. I just wish we could find a root to this problem.

ya.
Just some more info on my problem.
When i run a speed test the ping is very quick (~50ms)
But once the download test starts it just dies. It freezes on a number then goes to "network communication issues"

Hmm, yeah it might be a router problem for you guys.
When I do that it finishes, I'm just having wifi issues.
Mine occur only in certain roms as stated above, with miui and cm7. Nightley though worked, I didn't have any drops. I'm thinking about switching to a sense 3.0 here soon to see how it stands up.

Router
I've had similar issues with stock and custom ROM's on my old Hero. I started having similar problems with my 3VO, so the first thing I did was reset the wireless settings on my router to default and then redo the SSID, change the channel and power setting, and of course - change the password.
I haven't had a problem ever since.

I had the problem on my Stock ROM. Actually it only showed up when connecting to my N router, but did not happen when connecting to my G router. However my issue I had to turn off the radio and then back on before it would reconnect. I downloaded something called WiFi fixer. This fixed my issues completely. Hmmm, might have to play with some different kernels and turn off the fixer and see what happens.

Check router firmware netgear.com/support. They have WiFi issues on 3700 maybe yours too

Wifi calling is KILLING battery life -when NOT in use! !

After installing wifi calling I noticed a serious decline in my battery life. As in, unplug phone at 8am, battery dead by 2pm. Used system panel to find out wifi calling uses 30% of the cpu even if you've neve opened it! !
I used titanium backup to freeze the app and that fixed my battery life.
Problem is, now I see rom builders including the app in their roms. I installed Team Whiskey's froyo rom and there it is, wifi calling taking all my battery life. Problem this time is I can't freeze the app! Can't even kill it. If you are a rom maintainer, please please please stop including this app! It is only marginly interesting, and it destroys our batteries
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
i use system panel and i also noticed it was constantly in the foreground n no way to end it
Since my phone has been unplugged on obsidian froyo, I haven't sent a text or call, wifi calling is connected, not a percent of the battery was used by this app according to the system battery use...
On my mytouch 4g the wifi calling is what gave me such better battery life...
Not sure what's wrong with yours but its not inherently a bad app at all

I haven't had it long enough to do any testing, but if you think about it wifi calling disables the cell radios altogether so wouldn't that help the battery life?

WiFi uses more battery than cell radios.
It is the #1 power drainer on my Macnut install. I froze it in Titanium Backup to "fix" the issue.

False. Using a strong Wi-Fi signal when available will save you tons of battery over the regular cell. The probably with the Wi-Fi app is that it is always running and uses TONS of CPU. I'm talking upwards of 30% at a time.

I'm not referring to using the wifi calling. I do not have it enabled - wifi is turned off altogether, but wifi calling app is chewing through the cpu, killing the battery.
I'm not having this problem using Obsidian. It's likely not the app itself - may depend on the ROM you're using.
I noticed it taking up 30% of my CPU even when I wasn't using it. There doesn't seem to be a way to disable it either. So, I uninstalled it for now.
I am not having battery problem either, in fact I believe it is helping to get better battery life. Although, I am thinking the wifi calling is not very mature yet. I tried it out few times, and I had problem of people not hearing me well on the other side while they sounded great on my side. Is anybody else having this problem?

I don't mean to hijack, but does wifi calling use minutes...if so what's the point unless you have poor coverage at home?

it does use minutes. point is if you dont have cell coverage, you can use wifi for calls instead.

I think this may be the cause for some battery drain issue some people here are experiencing. This means when your phone is suppose to be "sleeping" It's not. Here is more of a detail graph view of the Wifi Calling app through the day:

Guys the problem is that Wifi calling is using CPU when it's disabled and wifi is OFF.. Not while using the thing. Thats something different from what we are talking about.
Sometimes a reboot fixes it but it acts up again after a few mins and use even more cpu.

[Q] Bad WiFi Performance?

I just got my S3 today and it has been great so far save for one issue. I seem to be experiencing really bad WiFi performance. I ran a speed test using the speedtest.net app on my iPhone 4 and got around 8 megabits per second down. However, when I ran the same test on my S3, I got about 1 megabit per second down consistently between numerous tests.
I don't have this issue while using LTE, which makes me think that it is a problem with the WiFi antenna. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Thanks
Mine runs perfect on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands through wifi.
Getting 30Mbits down and 22Mbits up.
does this happen on when connected to any wifi? or just particular one?
Make sure your phone is not on Power Save mode.

I've had issues also with it "re-initiating wifi" after waking, even though set to keep wifi always... feel like this is truly a bug. Dropping wifi frequently...
Same issue with wifi. I also notice a difference every time as well if I single handly hold the phone back case mid section or higher. Bars go from 4 to 2 or 1. Then back to 4 if I move my hand and palm below the buttons.

Yeah, I have continued to test the wifi on the phone and I am getting inconsistent performance. I hope this can be fixed in a software update and isn't a hardware defect.

I posted this in another wifi complaint thread. I don't know if anyone has tried.
I had this problem on my Captivate. It was not very obvious, because the disconnects were so brief. I discovered while working with some Tasker WiFi settings.
The fix was to set my phone to use static addresses. You can use WiFi Static in order to achieve static addresses only where you want. I am using this on my S3, so I don't know if I would have problems without it.
I'd be curious to know if this helps anyone.
My wifi keeps disconnecting and it's driving me crazy anyone have a solution?
Not at all. In fact, when I ran tests against my iPhone 4S my Galaxy S3 on WiFi got faster data speeds every time.
Wifi problem went away for me. Although I know for a fact it's not as fast as it should be.. I'm going to double check my router to make sure

HTC EVO LTE 3g hack. let me know if it works for you.

Ok so I did this and it helped streaming a little bit.

Then I tried something else that doubled my internet speed it may not work on non sense Roms, but you can try it.
Open your dial pad, type in *#*#4636#*#*
Edit:tap on phone information,
then go towards the bottom of the page. Tap on "set preferred network type" then select CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto, then your 3g should turn off then back on. Next go towards the very bottom of the screen and there is a button that says toggle dns I believe. (Sorry, I'm on my phone so I can't check) hit that so it says 0.0.0.0 allowed. Then all you have to do is tap your home key and it'll save by itself. I have noticed that this won't stay there if you restart your phone, but once you get used to it it's pretty quick to set. I don't reboot every five minutes so it doesn't bother me. It's a small price to pay for fast internet!. My internet speed used to be about 200-300 download, now I see up to 2200Kb download.
IF THIS HELPS YOU OUT PLEASE HIT THE THANKS BUTTON!! THANKS!

It kills some if you pick the wrong one. figured that out right away. Pick specifically the one I listed and you should be fine. I've been running like this for about 2-3 weeks. By the way I'm on ota, dev unlocked, rooted, on viper Rom, and awesome sauce kernel.
Sorry, to answer your question...I do send and receive text and picture mail, send and receive calls (regular number and Google voice number). Now I just have really fast internet.
have you also checked if you're not roaming without knowing?
nonetheless, thanks for posting!
Like I posted in the other thread.....
One test is not definitive.
Do 3-4 with it off, 3-4 with it on, and a couple with it off
Results page from speedtest will report multiple scores.

This is in response to Rxprt. I have. Every day all day, truthfully, it's fast until I reboot my phone then gets slow again. then I change the setting and it doubles as soon as 3g connects.

That sounds like that menu that you go to to mess up your phone from roaming on the 850 band.
It's all a myth to me. If I can get 2500 on a rural tower but go to another and get poor speeds then nothing I do to my phone is going to change that except for roaming of course or maybe toggling in hopes to get on another carrier if the tower has more than one active and it's the air interface congested not the backhaul.
Sent from my C64 w/Epyx FastLoad cartridge
Though changing this could in theory improve speeds in specific scenarios, its unlikely (and proven when I did a similar test on androidforums.com) that the masses will gain little if anything from these changes.
What we have confirmed is that if you are experiencing slow speeds, the cdma only setting can drastically improve them. The LTE cdma evdo setting is trying to (in some areas) connect to the enhanced cdma technology that is not yet available in most areas, thus the phone ends up on evdo or 1x speeds.
Problem is, the average user has no way of accessing the tower information to even know what areas are complete, in progress, or not effected. Thus results will vary for literally everyone.
And as mentioned, some changes there will result in loss of voice, data, text and or mms

I'm so fed up with my wi-fi not working I'm about to throw my phone across the room

As much as I love this phone I'm really starting to hate it. When I first got the phone I had problems with the wi-fi dropping and when you wake the phone it would come back on along with the awful multi-tasking recent apps. After the OTA it doesn't seem to do that anymore.
Now what it does it will show my wi-fi is connected full strength but I go to use the browser, an app, play store whatever and nothing. Just sits there forever no internet connection. I have to toggle wi-fi on and off for it to work again. I use wi-fi all day at work & while I'm home obviously so this issue affects me a lot. The router is a WRT54GL running Tomato which I have been running for years it's been ROCK SOLID on all my devices (including evo3D, original evo, laptop, etc) I just recently rooted and am running Stock With Goodies part of my reason for rooting I thought the wi-fi would maybe have been fixed but same issue on this rom as well.
It's so frustrating to pick up your phone to do something and have zero connectivity so you have to restart your app your trying to use cause it gets errors. I have tried everything I can think of, setting it to 2.4 only, high performance, changing channels on the router (again other devices work perfect). I don't know what to do about it anymore, I could bring it in to Sprint which I will absolutely not bring to them unless absolute less resort usually I know more then them anyway. They are just gonna tell me it works fine and give the phone back so I came here looking for some advice. Not really sure where to go from here but I can't stand having the phone like this. Does anyone have the same issue as me or is it possible my radio is bad? Speed are signal levels are just fine when it's working. Also it seems the longer the phone sits in sleep the more likely it is to happen.
Try going to WiFi settings. Then menu that and click "Best WiFi performance" that solved it for me. Running viper 4g and had a consistent problem with the WiFi dropping and reconnecting or not connecting at all.

How does this affect your battery? I'm trying to figure out what is even causing this issue if it's just the router, my phone only or what.
Best wifi performance will seriously impact your battery. It prevents your phone from sleeping properly. I found that I got an extra 10 hrs of life when I disabled best performance when I was still running stock.

I use wi-fi all day at work & while I'm home obviously so this issue affects me a lot. hell yea best wifi juice's the sh*t out of ya battery!!!
I feel your pain. The wifi issue plus the constant 3G dropouts are really starting to get to me. I've been rooted & S-Off and have tried every ROM & every fix and the problem still persists. Starting to think its a hardware failure.

Silly question...but are you guys having these issues on the latest firmware?

yea part of my reason for rooting was I thought it might cure some issues but it didn't. I am rooted and running latest stock with goodies. I had this exact same issue before I rooted.

Yea I'm starting to think so as well, I don't have 3G problems actually the 3G radio I think is pretty good. I don't have the drop out problems anymore just after the phone being idle on wi-fi for a while I have to toggle it on and off for it to actually work. My signal levels and speeds are totally find when it's connected it's just letting it sit sleeping for a while is when I have the trouble. It's super annoying I pick my phone up to do something and it doesn't work.

Yes latest firmware for me.
I just really don't know if it's an issue with the hardware or software. I have no issues what so every with the wi-fi hot spots at my work and home with any other devices and all my old phones never had issues.

Yeah. I don't remember having those issues with my first LTE but then again I didn't have it that long before I took it back to BB for a borked NFC chip. Wondering how their return policy is on a phone past the initial 30 day purchase..
yea my wifi just randomly drops and reconnect all the time and some time my data to it guess anoying after awhile when your usein the browser at work
Think this has been discussed before. The latest ota was supposed to fix the WiFi dropping, so if you have that and still experience problems then it's hardware related.
My first LTE dropped WiFi for 3g constantly. No matter what I did it kept happening. Finally took it back after I messed w gwallet too many times and got secure element error. New one doesn't drop WiFi at all. Also haven't updated to newest ota.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
I have newest OTA I don't get the disconnection issues any more since then but rather it staying connecting but not being able to get online after the phone sits idle. I have another person that has the exact same issue with me having to cycle wi-fi to get it working. I'm starting to think maybe it's something to do with Tomato but I have never had issues with it on any other device.
Every tomato Rom I used before was awesome and never had issues either.
Noticed that when I wake my phone it doesn't want to connect on WiFi. 3g disconnects a lot on bad signal too.
WiFi isn't as bad when I use juice defender. Mainly because it reconnects all radios when awakened though.

EVO LTE with WiFi issues on 4.2.2 ROMs only..

Hey guys I have a WiFi issue with all 4.2.2 roms that maybe someone can help me with.. It seems as if my WiFi will work fine for a lil bit than it seems to timeout or something if i stop using the phone for whatever period of time... If I turn it off, and on, it will work again and the process will continue as I just mentioned.. I've checked my WiFi settings and its not set to turn off dring sleep either... My router is a Belkin F5D-9230 Mimo G Router, and all my other devices work fine on WiFi or Ethernet.. Any help would be appreciated..
I'm s-off btw..
ummm
Mine does the same with any jb rom.
I use evervolv 4.2 works perfectly.
I also use mean bean ics works perfect also.
I have DLINK, tons of posts about wifi problems with DLINK
and THIS phone.
That and the off and on problem where when making a call the person on the other
end can't hear me, arrgh.
Next phone will not be an HTC.

So do the evervolv and mean bean give u those problems as well, or did u mean they work perfectly except with this wifi issue..?? Thanks for the response as well, maybe someone could help figure this out..
Maybe try using komodo. Also in settings you can set WiFi to 2.4 ghz only. There'salso some other settings I can't seem to recall now .

Mines a 2wire doesn't work on AOSP at all.

Go to the wireless setting in your 2wire change the channel and increase the power... Is it a 2701-HG?

What kind of router do you have? I have had all the at&t routers and I don't have issues connecting my phone to any of those, if it's the white 2wire increase the power output and change to a lower channel like 1-4, if it's a black one (pace or netgear) change from wpa to wep, you're gonna loose the wireless n and the router will broadcast in b/g...

mines a belkin, and it works fine on 4.1 roms only quirky on 4.2, as well as my data.. I'll lose data and go into 1x quite frequently on 4.2 roms.. I was certain I wasn't the only one experiencing these issues.. I'm S-OFF, full wipes before flashing, downloads all check out fine, etc...
Are you using wpa or wep? B, G or N? 2.5 or 5 GHz? Is channel on auto?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
WPA, auto channel 11, its a belkin mimo b/g router..
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I suggest to leave on g then change the channel to 1, leave it manual not on auto, try channels 1-5, and increase power if possible, I'm not familiar with belkin routers, but that's what I do with routers most of the time when I see an issue like yours...

Same here, I thought it would be fixed in the newer roms. Hopefully it will get fixed eventually. Thank for writing back though.

First time poster here.
I've tinkered quite a bit to figure out the wifi issue. I'm currently running stock with goodies.
On the router side my 2.4ghz and 5ghz settings are similar and look like this

On the phone side I use a home screen widget called Wifi status widget to monitor my throughput. I get about 65 megs a second on 100% signal. On 80% I can get as low as 13 megs a second.
Limit your band to to 2.4 ghz or 5ghz.
Select best wifi performance.
Use rim toolbox as a build.prop editor. Make a backup of your current build prop and add this line to the end.
net.tcp.buffersize.wifi = 4096,87380,256960,4096,16384,256960
It increases the tcp stack memory which helps throughput from what I can tell.
Good luck.
