Why so expensive? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I like the Flyer - I really do. Along with the pen it is a "working man's tablet" second to none. There is only ONE thing keeping me from buying one.
THE PRICE.
When you add the price of the tablet with the pen, you are looking at almost $600 for a single-core tablet. I can pick up an sweet Asus Transformer for $399.00. The $499.00 price tag (and charging extra for the pen) is just NUTS given the competition. At $399.00 (pen included) they would sell 3 times as many of these (if not more).
C'mon HTC, wake up and smell the competition.

Yup, that's exactly my price point, too.
The only thing to consider is that Best Buy will sell you the Flyer on an 18 month, no-interest payment schedule if you want. I may go that path if I get impatient. Also, get the Fujitsu sylus that works with the Flyer. B&H has it for $25.00 shipped:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/772804-REG/Fujitsu_FPCPN36AP_Extra_Stylus_for_Fujitsu_s.html

Flyer Cost
I understand why many people feel the flyer is expensive. Consider the following reason and think again:
1. HTC Flyer is the only Tablet that has a digitizer on it. The usage is unlimited. The problem is that many android lovers are not developing. We are only "MODing". Creating custom ROMs, etc. I you know what that digitizer can do, in terms of application you will know that having a Flyer is worth all the penny spent.
2. Bestbuy now sells the Flyer to you with the HTC Pen. Just tell them you want the HTC before you pay. Tell them the HTC pen must be included.
3. If you have a working laptop or tablet, you can trade it in at Bestbuy to reduce the cost of any device you buy from Bestbuy.
4. You need to try out the Note app with voice recording on the Flyer. The recording is extremely loud. And also, it is synced with EverNotes.
5. If the Flyer meets your needs, go for it. If not, don't go for it.

There used to be a promotion going on where the pen was free. Just tell them that you weren't available to buy the Flyer when the promotion was going on. They gave me a free pen.

The price point kind of makes it not really a "working man's tablet", does it not? I'm just joking, just thought it was funny thinking of some carpenter sitting there messing around with his little flyer.
1. Pen is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY overpriced. That is the truth. I got the view and it came with the pen. Had it not, I wouldn't even consider buying it. I know, that the pen is the single most different thing about the tablet, but in all honestly nobody wants to write on a screen until it feels like pen and paper. Apple knew this, that's why they were the first people to realize that a tablet shouldn't be like the older PC's that could be flipped around and used a stylus on. Apple knows what the AVERAGE consumer wants.
2. Single-core, duo-core, quad-core all that crap, just doesn't need to be focused on nearly as much as people think. The real proof is in the pudding. The thing runs fine, and unless you REALLY plan on seriously playing 3D games what does it matter? Everyone is so obsessed with having the most powerful processor, or best video processing... How much time do you actually spend playing those high demanding games? Maybe 1% of your usage of the tablet? And it's not even that the tablet can't play them, it's just that it won't be as FAST as some crazy tegra 2 thing.
3. The thing is awesome for what it is. I walked into a best buy the other day (just to pick up a 40$ bt dongle I needed for a few days, then I returned it, I'm not a sucker) and was tooling about with two other 7" tabs (the fujitsu and some other one) and they were pretty much garbage. They ran like 100$ cheaper. Over the 1-2 year lifetime of my tablet, 100$ is very little. Especially for a device I use so often...
Anyway, sorry about the long post.

I sorta disagree. Not that the pen is overpriced (I'm in full agreement with that statement) but that no one wants to write on a screen 'till it feels like paper. I've played with the Flyer/pen combo in BestBuy, and I want it so bad it hurts, LOL!
Seriously, if not for the pen I'd see no reason to trade for my Nook Color. But the pen turns a Flyer into a viable productivity tool. I can totally see myself taking it with me to meetings or when I have to meet with a supervisor and taking notes.

Prepared to be disappointed.
When you write with a stylus on a tablet (not just the flyer/view but also on all the "convertables" running xp from back in the day) it has lag. You end up writing at 80% speed just from the lag. Add in the fact that you are writing on a tiny surface with a low resolution mark means you can fit all of a sentence and a half on one screen (and that's really being generous).
The notes also lack any of the cool features of onenote. Can't copy and paste a section. It is rather tiresome.
The only really useful thing I think the stylus can add is if you are signing a lot of .pdf's or something.
I major in math and economics and HOPED that I might be able to take notes on the view (I tried this on an older 10" xp tablet a while ago) and was very disappointed.
1. When you record the lecture and write, what the person is saying is drowned out by the clacking of your stylus on the screen.
2. HTC has made 0 improvements on the accuracy and the delay of the writing coming from the stylus. Quite disappointing.
BUT it does all come down to preference. Maybe you are find with these shortcomings in light of the brand new ability to actually write on the thing, which I agree is just plain cool.

Not disappointed at all. This is your personal point of view. I dont agree with you. The pen is accurate fast and u can use it to write notes (like the physical yellow notes) certainly you will not use it to write the human history!

I agree, though I do not use it at all (even I have enabled the phone features in it s-off), you pay for quality and performance. Another think I like about HTC (I use them from almost 7 years), is the battery. It will last very long...
If anybody interested, I live in Canada and I will be selling it. Let someone enjoy it...

Oh, I wouldn't use it to take notes at a lecture. For that it would be inadequate, I agree. But based on my experience playing with it in Best Buy, it should be more than adequate for jotting down a few instructions, perhaps a quick diagram or two.

Many tablets, including the Transformer and Galaxy Tab, have cheap plastic bodies. They don't match the sturdiness, look and feel of the Flyer's aluminum body.
When you consider that, the digitizer for the pen (as already mentioned), and maybe other things, it might be that the Flyer costs more to manufacture, and HTC cannot actually afford to charge less and still maintain a decent margin.
Also, the single core 1.5 GHz CPU is actually faster at most things then the dual core tablets (most of which are 1 GHz). Most applications do not support dual core CPU's yet, so its the raw processing clock speed of one core that counts. The dual core comes into play when multi-tasking, such as running processes in the background and switching between apps. If you compare the Flyer to other tablets, you will find the Flyer is actually snappier and smoother most the time. Honeycomb is inherently laggy at this time, and that's partially to blame. But the single core CPU is part of it, too.

I have to agree that it is a bit expensive but it meets my requirements and I use it all day.
I use Notes in all of my meetings or just to jot things down while walking around campus.
It is nowhere near the feature rich MS OneNote but I hope the next version (if there will be one) incorporates some.
As for speed, I don't see a delay when writing.
HTC Flyer / Tapatalk

It's expensive cause it's good build quality and it's new. Flyer's hard ware is really good: beautiful screen + ntrig digitizer, 1GB ram, Al body,... And HTC has to pay other companies for patent fees, about $50/smart phone. In addition, mobile device market is so HOT now. Remember that the Galaxy tab was also very expensive when it was released. I think we pay most of that money for things we can't see which related to R&D, marketing,... Chinese stuffs are cheap cause they don't pay for those things and they are crap(py).
However from inking point of view, with the "magic" pen, the Flyer is the best in market right now (do not consider Windows devices which are bulky and power hungry). But at the end, thinking about $500-700 laptops, we are definitely overcharged for Flyers. Still love them though.

Don't forget Sense. I think they put a considerable amount of time and money into Sense to make HTC devices distinguishable.
I'm not a huge fan of Sense, but I think the average consumer likes the clean look, and you can only get Sense with HTC, so they can charge more.
I sometimes think it is wise that HTC spends so much time on their UI because that's what the consumer notices.

damn Dollar... i paid 650€ (Germany)for mine -> 950$ ... early adopter
What is wrong with American electronics prices?
Everyting half the price, as else where in the world.
But... still complaing
Maybe its the sign, for a drowning America... low prices are a result of peoples earnings and how much they can afford...
Looks like, they cant afford average world market prices anymore
So before you complain, compare world prices... thank the Germans, Russians Indonesians, Polish, Hispanics, Canadians... even guys in India and Africa that they can afford to subsidy your low priced gadgets through their up to 3 times higher prices... (worst is Dell/Alienware)

Gosh I don't really think so. I think its because things have ALWAYS been cheaper here than overseas. It might also depend on sales volume. There are a lot of people in the US vs some European countries. It perhaps cheaper to market/sell products here vs some more bureaucratic nations. But thats just my guess.

So TRUE. And check the oil price, price of almost everything too (of course we have a bit higher tax here in Europe).
The whole world (especially developing countries) is "subsidizing" the US market. Not so much for us in Europe. But we are "trying hard" now to have subsidy from Africa, Asia, Middle East. LOL.

It is cheaper to ship in the U.S. because fuel prices are lower than Europe. We still produce much of our own fuel. Taxes are lower in the U.S.. The number of consumers with disposable income is higher in the U.S.. The highway infrastructure in the U.S. is better than most European countries.
Sum that all up and we get cheaper prices on most consumer goods.

Evo View of Wait?

So, I really what a tablet, but I’m willing to wait a while if there is something really cool in the pipeline. I’m a huge fan of HTC, I believe their build quality is great, they put out some killer phones and I love Sense, so I want an HTC tablet. The problem is, I’m not a fan of the 7” form factor. I like 10” tablets and think 7” is too small IMO.
Has anyone heard if HTC will be putting out a 10” tablet for use on the Sprint network? Yes I know about the rumored HTC Puccini for AT&T. It sounds like an awesome tablet, too bad Sprint didn’t get it. Any time frame on when the View will get Honeycomb?
Also, aside from games, what are some of the premier Tablet apps for Android and how well do they display on the 7” screen versus the 10” screen?
Thoughts or opinions? Thanks
I'm writing this with the sun over my left shoulder out on my patio. I have yet to open/install an app that looks bad on this thing. Of course there's some that don't scale up for tablets, but the everyday apps, games just look fantastic.
View angle and screen are great.
Appearently we could procure honeycomb right now if we really.wanted it, but HUGE but...the pen wouldn't work. That's no go here...I keep track of my projects, meetings and draw with the pen personal and work, pen is why I bought this one.
The 7" form factor is a different device all togeather. I have an iPAD2 that sits on the coffee table, and when my wife wants to search the web or something she grabs it.
I've purposely tried to use my 7" flyer for this as well as its real purpose "pocketable portability" to the office. And I have been able to do it. It seems like the sweet spot for me.
So if the Puccini came out next month with 10" display and pen, I just might toss my flyer up on ebay!
Definitely your call.
Go buy flyer at best buy, play with it for a week and a half and trade it in for galaxy tab 10, and then see if Puccini WiFi is out by then. lol
Sent from my HTC Flyer using XDA Premium App
10" tablets are too big to carry around with you all the time which is the only point of having 3g. Most 10" tabs are couch surfers and are used in locations with wifi so why pay the extra expense. I've now had both a 10" 3g, a flyer and a view. The 10" 3g went on ebay, too big to be a functional portable data device, might as well carry a laptop. The Flyer is now with my wife in her purse to use at work, the View is now with me every where I go. Probably getting rid of my Droid X and only paying for the data plan on the view.
Well, last night I went to Best Buy and picked up a Flyer to play around with, and the the Scribe for free. Two things I’ve noticed. 7” is just too damn small. It’s a retarded size and tablets need to be around 10”. There’s no point to a 7” tablet, with the on screen keyboard up, there’s not much screen real estate left. And wow it sucks not having a data plan. I had to drive 15 minutes from Best Buy to a local supermarket to use their wifi in order to configure this thing. I see no point in having a tablet if it doesn’t have a data plan. This thing is going back on Tuesday.
As for the size, I want mobility and functionality on the go. I don’t see how a 7” is any more portable then a 10”. I bought a Sony Vaio F Series 3D laptop only to return it and get an HP Envy 17” 3D because I couldn’t stand having a 16” screen on the laptop, the bigger 17.3” display was more to my liking. My laptop weighs about 7.5” lbs, which I didn’t realize, but some people consider that heavy. What kind of sissy do you have to be that you can’t haul something under 8 lbs? To me bigger is always better, and I have a hard time imagining myself using a tablet that’s a mere 2.7” bigger then my phone.

If you are a.) a Sprint customer and b.) don't want a tablet without a data plan, why on Earth did you buy a Flyer and not an Evo View? And cool story bro on the hating the 7 inch tablet size; I happen to love it. Although I'm the kind of guy that's gonna end up with a 7 inch tablet and a 10.1 inch tablet lol.

Funny, I am completely the opposite. I had an iPad for a year and honestly never used the thing. I look at the ~10" tablets as a useless size compared to the 7". I don't carry a backpack or bag with me and carrying the iPad was just completely inconvenient at best where the View its small enough to carry in-hand with me. As for the couch (where people seem to defend the 10" form factor the most... I ALWAYS found myself leaving the iPad on the endtable and instead grabbing my Macbook Pro from its dock in the other room.
To each their own, I hope you find a tablet that makes you happy.

Getting a Flyer.....

Hello,
I recently gave my Nook to my brother. I am looking for a new tablet, preferably before 6th grade starts in 2 weeks. I have found a great deal on the Flyer, but I'm worried about some other things:
Where can I get the best deal for a pen, $60 or less?
Is the Notes app sufficient enough to take notes and do some math?
Can the Flyer's battery last through the day on medium brightness, and maybe last if I forget to charge when I get home?
Is there anything I can do to make it work better in school?
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies - very much appreciated.
You could probably find a pen on ebay. I purchased a pen but rarely use it. The notes application is nice and I use it for work in my meetings but it does leave a little to be desired. I would think the pen and notes app would be decent for math.

Right. I'll look into the pen later. Thanks for the feedback. Now I have a bigger problem:
I got outbid $5 more than my $370 bid and I was sleeping when it happened. So I lost the deal of a lifetime. Anyplace I can get a new Flyer, $400 or less?
Thanks.

Only participate in eBay auctions for which you can be online during the last 5-10 minutes of the auction. Otherwise you will be outbid every time. Its called sniping, and its a sad fact of online auctions. At least he outbid you by a real amount, $5. And not some infuriating amount like 50 cents or a dollar.
6th graders are using tablets at school now? I really am getting old.
I personally feel the pen and note taking functions work quite well. It takes a bit to get accustomed to, its not exactly the same feel (accuracy, very slight delay) as a real paper and pen. But once you get used to it, its a great tool. I really like how my notes are automatically synched to my PC and smartphone. So no forgetting your notebook when you need the notes. On the other hand, the "dog ate my homework" excuse goes out the window for you!
Another cool function, is the ability to take a photo or video and embed it right in your notes. I think that would be pretty handy for taking a pic of the teacher's blackboard/whiteboard. Although half the benefit of taking notes, is that writing the notes yourself actually helps you learn and remember.
Fujitsu stylus
Some people reported that they can use Fujitsu tablet stylus with their Flyer. It can be bought for about $30. You can search on the XDA.
It's annoying they charge extra for the pen (I got it for free included when I got mine from Sprint) ... but given the accuracy of the pen and the buttons on it... It's really good and honestly worth it.
I LOVE the Flyer, but in all seriousness, without the pen... You might as well look at another tablet. That's not to say the pen makes the tablet, on its own it's a good piece of hardware...But...You really could do better. You don't "need" it, but you "should" have it. Otherwise, I could see how you might potentially regret your purchase.

An Undecided Buyer

Hi,
I bought this Sony Tablet S last weekend with the idea that I would try it and return it. I also bought a Motorola Xoom with the same intentions. I wasn't really able to try the Tablet S because everytime I picked up the device in the store the anti-theft alarm would sound. The salesperson reluctantly admitted I could take it back if I didn't like it, I usually don't this kind of thing as I prefer to wait and buy online cheaper.
Anyways it's been a week. My heart was set on getting an Xoom, I like Motorola but the screen quality... I don't want one even though I found two used for $300 with accessories.
So on to the Tablet S... I kept going back and forth on it. My biggest gripe is that this will be worth $200 in a year and it may even be completely out of date as Tablets mature.
The things I like about it:
- Durable! I plan on having this in my bedroom, I can fall asleep with it in the bed and I highly doubt I'd break it. Same for carrying it around the house, it doesn't need any kind of case.
- The Shape. It is decent to hold and it really does work well at a table. The angle makes viewing and typing a lot better.
- It's a Sony. I like Sony, I just hope they actually support this device unlike that piece of junk Sony Dash I foolishly bought last year.
- The remote feature. It's not near as advanced as I would like but the software is "Version 1.0". I'm hoping it progresses and becomes more advanced with "activities". I don't mind the layout at all, I think the buttons look good. The one thing I find is that it could be faster in switching between devices.
- The screen. I like that it's 9.4" as this gives you more pixels per inch than a 10.1" display resulting in a sharper image. The viewing angles are good, but I have to admit.. I do wish Sony put an even better quality screen in. I don't think I would want to read a book on this device. By the way the 9.4" screen is easier to reach with your fingers but it's less appealing to the eyes, that extra 1/2" does make a difference in screen "real estate".
- I like the charge system. I don't have a dock yet, it's ordered but I like the fact it just drops in and easily lifts out. I could see all the other tablets docks requiring more effort to align and slide in/out of their respective docks.
- The Sony tweaks to the Android OS. I like them, I just hope it's not a drawback... waiting for Sony each time a new version is available.
- The Sony games. I don't game much anymore but it's a welcome addition for me.
- The HD Remote. Man, I wish I waited six more months before buying my XBR-LX900. This years models seem to have a better integration with this tablet.
- I like the fact that it's user serviceable. The battery can be changed and a 3G/4G card can be inserted.
What I don't like:
- The screen. Another 1/2" would be more visually appealing. The colors could pop more and I wish it was better on the eyes for reading. One day I suppose, for now I'll be keeping my Sony eReader.
- It's looks. At times I like the way it looks, at other times... I think it looks / feels cheap. But mind you, it's very durable the way it is. I wouldn't hesitate to allow a child to play with it.
- The price. Way over-priced for what it is! I suppose all tablets are though, but at least Motorola has style. I like the looks and feel of the Motorola build much better.
- Weight... it is a touch heavy even though this is suppose to be one of the lighter tablets. Just imagine in five years the tablets we will have?
- The charge cord. If you don't use a dock (which should come with it!!!) that charge cord is going to break.
- And again lastly.. this isn't really a knock on Sony but I honestly feel it's too early to spend this kind of money on this types of hardware. Tablets are in their infancy, none of them are worth what we are paying for them. Honestly I think most tablets really should be priced at $199 or $299 for what they are. $499 is just.... too much money for what it is.
Anyways for me, I've decided to keep the Tablet S even though I know I will regret it in six months. I need a new alarm clock, I'd like to be able to convienantly check things from my bedroom and I would like to experiment with Android... so here I am.
I see the Tablet S as having a long life with me for it's simple durability. I don't have to baby it, it'll serve well for what it is. A portable household browser / email device. I don't think of this Tablet as something you would take out with you. For that I will mostly likely get a second or third generation Motorola.
I am also a proud owner of the Sony Tablet. This review is very well said.. can't disagree.. you should post this review in sites like Amazon.

This unfortunately is always the case with tech, once the Kal-El (quad core Tegras) come out you'll see price drops on the dual core ones. Doesnt mean your tablet is going to become useless though just you wont be state of the art anymore

I agree on this, wish the colors did pop a bit more something in between S tablet and Galaxy would have been nice. And yeah the thing I hate most is the charging connector, everytime I plug it in I feel like its going to break. Guess Ill have to buy a dock as well.
Yeah I agree, it's totally overpriced, the cost of the case is ridiculous too... but, that's Sony for ya.
I also have a wifi Xoom and think it's a piece of junk compared to the S, and most other HC tablets out there. It's laggy and the screen is so washed out and bland. The Sony S flips through screens so smoothly, gives a nice tablet experience.
Damn... my country still haven't release Sony Tablet S... ARGHH!!!.... my don't they just do global release...
Yeah Sony product is expensive but GOODD!!!
tbh go save your money or spend it on something worth the money like the Jetstream or the Ipad2.
Tablet S just does not compare. In every single way my jetstream was better, so I ended up returning the TS.

Is prime REALLY worth buying ?

Don't get me wrong. I had TF one. I would like to have Prime. BUT.
Is that really worth buying especially now when the price is so high?
What is really better in Prime? Tegra 3? Do we really need tegra 3? As far as I remember there were so few games that used Tegra 2. I could count them on 2 hands fingers.
So I ask. What do you think guys? Is it worth to switch TF to Prime? Is it really worth it?
What if Tegra 3 will end like Tegra 2 with only few apps behind?
The answer is yes. Also this tablet is not priced too high considering the specs it brings to the table. The apps, whether tegra3 optimized or not, will benefit from the extra horsepower. How is this priced so high? You get the worlds first quad core Android tablet, the best display of any tablet, ports like hdmi and micro SD card, and 32gb of ram for only $499. Compare to an iPad 2 with less specs and festures and same 32gb starting at $599. Already been said n proven to be best Android tablet out there. If You want something cheap, get the kindle fire. No other tablet comes close yet to specs n features at that $499 price range. Stop feeding into the negativity of some people/trolls trying to downplay tegra2 or tegra3 chipset. Regardless of what people say, tegra2 was a success. Brought the worlds first dual core phones. Now will do the dame with worlds first quad core tablet. And their chipset will be first to run ICS onna tablet.
Plus this is answered within several other similar threads in general section.
Also, same could be said for other platforms like IOS. Even less number of games/apps are optimized for new chipset of ipad2. As with any new tech. It will take time for developers to make software that fit accordingly. Now once quad core is out, all apps will be made optimized to dual core or quad core. Since majority of devices now will have either one of these. Another benefit of the tegra3 is the power saving capabilities. It has already be shown/proven through several reviewers to have best battery life of any android tablet. It's right there with iPad/ipad2 battery life. And this was in balanced mode. Put prime on powers acing mode and it will surpass the IOS battery life easily.
what kind of response are you expecting to get on the prime section of XDA?
of course everyone reading this board wants a prime.
It depends, if you have the original Transformer then the upgrade might not be worth it unless you plan to play a lot of 3D games for some reason. If you already have an iPad 2, then upgrade seems not important, unless you really want a keyboard dock that is better than what iPad has.
If you don't have a tablet or have an old one, then YES. It is worth it.
Imo no it's not priced too high. I have a Nook Color now and while it's great, I would like something with a little more power. Considering I paid $200 9 months ago for my NC and have used it for a thousand things I didn't think I'd ever use it for, I can definitively justify $500 for device I will use everyday
Ok, let me see...
1. Thinner, lighter, and better looking than old TF.
2. Better battery life by most accounts.
3. Quad-core for when you need it, a single low power core when you don't.
4. Tegra 3 is a reference GPU for ICS, enough said. I don't care if there is ever a single game written specifically for Tegra 3 - all I want is effortless UI, with no hiccups, and perfect video. That is IMHO iPad 2's single advantage, and I hope that TF Prime + ICS finally comes close.
The question should be asked - why are others charging just as much for old hardware? Suddenly that GT 10.1 for $499 with 16Gb looks very expensive...
this is a nerd site. made up of lots of nerds.
short answer, hell yes. buy it. buy 2.
no its not, its not worth buying, you should not get this.
DON'T GET IT!

That is a very subjective question that only you can answer. What is "really worth buying" to me may not be to you and vice versa.
You guys don't even consider the whole situation... He is asking whether it is worth it to switch from the original to the Prime.
Well considering that you can probably sell the Original+Dock for around 350 and buy the new one for 700+, that is a $350 difference. Then that is really a money issue. The Prime is a nice upgrade from the original. It's faster, lighter, thinner, and looks nicer. But the original is definitely still usable. The original is not obsolete, the Prime is just a premium. Now the question is whether you are willing to pay for this premium.
If you aren't unhappy with your TF right now you could always wait till later when more quad-core tablets come out. There will always be something new and exciting on the line.
You definitely do not need it. Don't buy it, as its terrible, and can I have your pre-order?
For me, the answer is a bit mixed. While I am really excited about the release of the Prime, yesterday, I cancelled my pre-orders from BestBuy and GameStop. I too, have a TF101. My thinking was that right now, if you were to sell your TF101 on eBay within the next week or so, you could get a decent price for it, ~$350-400 (with the dock). This would go a long way to paying for the upgrade. However, my Amazon pre-order was cancelled and I ended up pre-ordering at two different places on Dec 1st or 2nd. My concern was that I was basically at the back of the line for both of these pre-orders and I am flying back home for a couple of weeks around x-mas. I wasn't sure that I would get the tablet before flying out, I was pretty sure that I wouldn't get the dock before I got back, and I didn't want to have either sitting on my doorstep for any amount of time (just in case I wasn't able to change the shipping in time). This was compounded by the fact that I would have needed to sell the TF101 before getting the TF201 in my hands, which made me nervous.
I was sitting at the coffee shop yesterday, doing actual work on my TF101, without any issues, wondering if the upgrade was worth it right now. I decided that at this point in time, it would just be too much of a hassle. The TF101 is a great performer for a lot of tasks, and for my typical use, I have not run into a situation where I feel like I am really limited by the hardware. I think that I will probably upgrade once I can buy both the dock and keyboard, and probably the transleeve, on Amazon and get one day shipping on everything and be done with it. The pre-order situation on this one turned out to be too much of a hassle and I was not sure that I trusted that Asus would be able to deliver enough units to secure my late pre-order before flying out.
As far as why I actually wanted to upgrade, it's more powerful, thinner, lighter and smaller with a better screen and better battery life. It also supposedly handles the dock/charging situation a bit better than the current device, which is actually important to me. I would love to be able to see the screen better in the sunlight, and have more apps running in the background without seeing much of a slowdown. I would also love to show this off to my Apple loving friends as a thinner, lighter and more powerful tablet than the iPad 2.
Price does not seem high to me. $500 is the same price the original 32GB Transformer came out at. The difference is this time there is no 16GB $400 option. Sure there are other tablets that are deeply discounted, but they suck and nobody wants them.
Tegra 3 isn't just about video games. I don't really play that many games on my tablet to let them dictate my tablet or processor choice. But the Tegra 3 also has an improved GPU that will help me play back high def videos that the Tegra 2 was really bad at. If you are just streaming HD video, the Tegra 2 is still fine. But if you copy over your own AVI or MKV HD files, hopefully the Tegra 3 will be able to handle them better.
Another important aspect of the Transformer Prime is it's aluminum body. The original Transformer with it's plastic back gets warm in your hands. The palms start to sweat a little, then the tablet gets slippery to hold. The aluminum body of the Prime should stay cooler, prevent the palms from moistening and hold easier. Not to mention it's much thinner and lighter.
And the Transformer Prime is much better looking. I always found the brown Transformer kinda ugly.
I'm excited about getting the Prime for two primary reasons:
1. It's lighter and thinner, and so should be easier to manage for longer ebook reading sessions. I'm pretty sure of this because my wife's GT 10.1 is more comfortable to use than my OG Transformer, and the Prime is a touch thinner and lighter yet.
2. The extra brightness is going to be awesome. I can ALMOST use my Transformer on the back porch in the SoCal sun for ebook reading--but only almost. The extra brightness should take the Prime over the edge and make it usable.
Everything else--faster, more battery life, better touch responsiveness, etc.--is just gravy as far as I'm concerned. Given that I'll be able to sell my Transformer and dock, I'll only be spending a few hundred dollars for a significantly enhanced device. Can't beat that with a stick...
I would say it depends on your starting point. For me.. it was a Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I bought for $400 and sold for $400. The cost of stepping up to the Prime was $99 so yeah.. id say it will be worth it.
If you have equipment that you have to sell to buy it I would look at how high the replacement cost would be to get there. If you have an original with dock that you can sell, then just see if the amount of money you have to chip in is worth it to you.
If you are happy with what you have the chance is you will keep being happy with it.. if you like to have the latest/greatest then the chance is that the upgrade would be worth it.
TLDR: What I wrote didn't help at all.. only you could decide if it is worth it or not.

Ah, but, there IS a $399 16GB option (that will likely be discounted): the original Transformer. ASUS isn't pulling it from the market, and so there's still a decent, lower-entry-price product on the market.
I just think ASUS needs to make more of an effort to make it clear that the $499 32GB Transformer Prime should be directly compared to the $599 32GB Apple iPad 2. If they can make people understand that simple fact, they'll do just fine.

ummmmmm yes
The OP answered his own question without even realizing it. Based on initial reviews and hands-on experience the Transformer Prime (TP) is a worthwhile upgrade from Transformer (T). Since you're a previous T owner you should confirm for yourself by getting hands-on with a demo unit and not making any sizable investment blindly. For the financial sensitive buyers it's not worth the premium to pay full retail to be first in line due to the fact that the price is relatively high as compared to competitive AMD E-450 APU based netbooks costing ~$400 with the added benefit of a broader range of software. Furthermore, there will be competing quad-core tablets in the pipeline that may offer better specs (eg. Lenovo LePad K2 1.6GHz Tegra3 and 2GB DRAM, Samsung quad-core Exynos) and is predicted, per Nvidia CEO, to be more affordable in the ~$300 range as the market matures in the next few quarters. If you have the disposable income and/or have an immediate need then get in line otherwise you'll benefit by holding off.
Personally, if money is no object I'd own both a Samsung Galaxy Note and TP. But, if I had to settle for just one I'd go with Samsung Galaxy Note since it can serve as a phone, tablet and displace x86 desktop as a very low power general purpose computer (what I had intend to use the TP for).

Don't get me wrong. I had a BMW 535i. I would like to have a BMW 550i. BUT.
Is that really worth buying especially now when the price of the BMW 550i is so high? What is really better in the BMW 550i? Bigger engine? Do we really need a bigger engine? As far as I remember there is still a speed limit on the road and the price of gas is still high.
So I ask. What do you think guys? Is it worth to switch to a 550i? Is it really worth it?
What if the BMW 550i will end like the BMW 535i when you still can get a speeding ticket if you speed and still have to pay high gas prices?
With the Kindle Fire and Nook Color at $199 you're going to see Android tablets morph in to categories much like Intel's done with processors (i3, i5, i7). There will be value, mid-range, and high-end. Value will be the marketshare leader, followed by mid-range, and then high-end. High-end will be the smallest but most profitible segment margin wise. The Prime is a high-end tablet. Asus even said they'd continue the original Transformer as their mid-range offering. If you want a high-end tablet the question is which one because they'll all be priced similarly. They'll all be quad-core but Acer, Lenovo, and HTC's offerings will have 2GB of RAM, 1920x1152 displays, and ICS pre-installed. The Prime's the first next-gen tablet but the high-end market will look much different in Q1 2012. If you have a decent first-gen tablet, other than a resale drop on eBay/CL, you might be better off waiting to see what your options are. I like the idea of a higher res display, especially with ICS. We're all geeks and addicted to shiny and new but we don't represent the overall market. There's a reason VW outsells M-B, BMW, and Audi combined.

[Q] active digitizer quality?

I've been researching Tablets and i must be able to write notes with ease. I've read the best stylus is the Jot Pro which i've gone and purchased. I've also read that writing with a active digitizer is the best for taking hand notes.
i've yet to read about "active digitizer" in any of the specs for the TP so i was wondering how it would compair to a active digitizer screen? Also to what degree would it be better or worse?

Trust me, if you put conductive grease in your jot ball, you won't see any difference between using that on the TF or TFP and a tablet with digitizer.
Active digitizer has pressure sensitivity. Although it can be... less precise than Adonit (because some active digitizers are innacurate when holded on different angles).
Unfortunetaly Transformer doesn't have one. Adonit was supposed to show active digitizer for all tablets on CES. I wonder what they will make.
Thanks. I ask because i was watching a video smackdown between the TFP vs. Motorola Droid XYBoard and she specifically made a point that Active Digitizer screens are better for note taking.
She did not mention how much better these screens are and with all the people here saying the Jot Pro is amazing with the TFP, it can't be that much better.

I know what video you're talking about. Reviewers are not gods. They know a lot of official stuff, but they don't know **** about real life stuff. Most reviewers still say the ipad2 is much much much better than the tf. The tf has been out for how long? Most reviewers still criticize the tf keyboard for not being able to disable the touchpad. Hint, its a shortkey on top somewhere.
Reviewers are good at giving you first impressions. But they suck at telling you about real life applications.
If you'd rather put your trust in reviewers, then you should get a motor xyboard. I'm telling you from real life experience. You won't notice a difference.

Yeah, people tend to trust those with authority these days. Somewhere along the line, people lost their trust in real life experience.
Take my g/f's dad, for example. His win7 computer stopped animating the windows when he move them around. It bothered him so much that he called in a geek squad guy. The geek squad guy said there was nothing he could do but reinstall win7 OS. Wanted to charge him $200 for it. My g/f and I happened to walk in at the time. My g/f told her dad to let me try fixing it. He hesitated (because I wasn't a geek squad... and geek squad knows everything, right?), and said sure why not. It took me a whole 2 minutes to fix his problem. All I did was went into the windows animation settings and reset the damn thing.
Think about it. He came this close to paying $200 for a geek squad know-it-all to re-install windows for a settings problem.
To this day, I still write to reviewers every time they got something wrong. What's disappointing is after I've written my lengthy correction, they still get it wrong in their next review. The TF keyboard is a perfect example. Back in May, reviewers were all criticizing the TF keyboard for not having the option to disable the touchpad. I promptly wrote to every one of them informing them of the 4th button from the left top row. The same reviewers are now *****ing about the prime keyboard not having the option to disable the touchpad. It seems like these guys picked up the TF, xoom, or whatever, used it for a whole 5 minutes, and then declare themselves experts of all things tablets. It's effing annoying as hell reading their reviews. They get so many things wrong!
In addition, most of the tech industry have been taken over by apple fanboys. Take a look at the following article written just a few days ago.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/01/ces-tablets-redemption/all/1
Notice that the transformer was not mentioned at all in that article. Instead, the writer pointed to all the failed tablets (xoom, touchpad, etc.) declaring them to be the only examples of non-ipad tablets. As a matter of fact, even as the prime is being rolled out, reviewers continue to ignore the asus TF/TFP. Despite the fact that the TF is now the most successful android tablet, reviewers still want to pretend like it doesn't exist and that the game really is about between the ipad2 and the xoom.
But I guess I'm just a nobody and they are reviewers so they must know everything there is to know about these devices.
Its called ignorance
So about taking notes with a pen like the JotPro, is it cool? I mean would you guys go into a semi important meeting with just the prime and no paper?
And is there a note taking app that lets you rest your hand on the tablet in any way while writing (some dedicated space would be fine i guess)?
->nevermind this, just found that in another thread:
(5) Writepad stylus - note taking app with palm rejection, meaning you can rest your hand on the screen and still be able to write. Can save your notes as pdf docs.
Had the jot pro, disliked it enough that I returned it this morning. Half of the time it missed the lines I was writing. I switched to a targus and it works much better. I think the JOt Pro has such a small surface that it just lost connectivity with the screen. I tested it on a screen with no protection on it btw. It probably would have been worse with a screen protector.
I have not found a note taking app that does good with hand rejection. I just use the hover above method.
That being said, I do only take the Prime to meetings, no paper, and take notes all the time. Works great.
