hey all, I am just wondering if there is a setting, or a trick to be able to see the screen in the Sun? I work outside and anytime someone calls, or i need to use the phone, I have to cup my hands over it and turn away from the sun, and do everything I can to just be able to see the screen? Do the anti-glare screen protectors work? Is it my otterbox case?
Wondering if there are any tricks of the trade?

I use a matte screen protector. Works good enough, but you're only gonna get so much result. It's not really designed for the outdoors.
Yes go to you Display Properties and crank your brightness to the max. I use mine in the sun and see it perfectly. In fact I use a Powerbar that has Wifi/Bluetooth/GPS and the brightness function on it so its all at the fingertips. One push and the screen is medium bright another push and its full on bright and one more push and its at its lowest setting.. But youd be amazed how incredible the display is when the brightness is full blast.

Ok, I have been keeping it on "auto brightness" I was assuming when it senses the sun? it maxes itself out?

Auto brightness is garbage...well for me it is. I like having my brightness the lowest when im in doors and highest when im out doors. I have to do it manually but i dont mind.

Install my kernel, it increases the max brightness for your screen. The maximum brightness for 3D mode is 255, but the max brightness for standard mode is 232. I bumped standard mode to 255, so it is still within factory specs.

What do you keep your display brightness at?
I left mine on auto since I got it bit now just changed it to 100%. Im gonna see how much worse it is on the battery because the trade off might be worth it for how awesome it looks at full brightness.

I gotta go full on bright at all times. Why buy a phone with an awesome screen and throttle the beauty of it. Plus somebody might be looking over your shoulder. HaHa!!
With both my Captivate and Infuse, I never used auto brightness. I always use 0% unless I'm outdoors, as these screens are really readable even in well lighted rooms.
I keep mine on 100 percent. I dont see the point of having such an amazing screen if i can't enjoy it at full capacity.....

Today my first day with the phone I left it at half way.
I have the brightness all the way down and its still really bright!
I use auto but at night in bed even at lowest setting its still pretty bright so I use an app called screen filter and dims the screen even lower then samsungs lowest setting. I would think this would save on battery life as well if you were to use this app more often?
Auto. I think this phone tends to be on the brighter side compared to others when on auto. I'm not saying that as a bad thing though, just an observation.

Probably due to the increased number of pixels/increased area. Even with the same output per pixel, the note will be brighter than say an infuse or a captivate because there are more pixels shining towards your eyes.
I keep mine below 10% unless I am in bright sunlight. The screen is easy to read and less brightness over such a large screen means far less power consumption. Just my humble two cents.

I don't think that using the screen at less than 100% diminishes its beauty. Most times, for me at least, 100% is way too bright. Also, using the screen at 0% will show much better battery life. I notice huge drain when using my Infuse at 100% for any amount of time. I can literally watch my percentage drop as I catch up on XDA posts and facebook/twitter. The display is easily the biggest drain of all for any phone, and using it on 100% will drain your battery even quicker. Just don't complain about crappy battery life when it happens please.

No, as I said, the screen is too bright at times. Having it at 100% also heats up the phone more quickly.
I keep mine at 100 all the time for the same reason other posters have stated. Why take away from the main selling point of the phone (at least it is to me). I suppose I'm lucky in that I have an office job and spend a good deal of time at my desk during the day. I can always plug in for an hour or two if I need to, but so far with the Note I haven't needed to. No heat issues either.
Like most other things android, it always comes down to personal preference.
How is the text in full sunlight? This will be my work phone also and I need to be able to check e-mails in the sunlight.

There is a fair amount of glare, of course, but I was able to easily read emails in direct sunlight. One of the first things I tried on Friday when I got it...
Thanks for the reply - this has to be a huge upgrade over my HTC Tilt 2. I have to either find shade or cover it up with my hand. Hopefully with the Note I will not have to put on my reading glasses to see.

Enjoy while you can Ever heard of screen burn in? 100% brightness will only speed up the burn in. That's the same effect when you buy a Plasma TV and use the torch mode except AMOLED screens will burn in 10 times faster than Plasma screens.

Hello guys,
I'm enjoying my SGS3, noticed today that the audio is very noticeably more open and dynamic than SGS2... very obvious. GREAT!
The auto brightness is too dark, ok for when the wife is sleeping and I want to geek out a bit, but for most use, it is dim.
Is anyone else experiencing that, I wonder if anyone cooking ROMs will be able to up the auto brightness setting, it should be possible, right?

Funny, on HTC it is always too bright! Maybe we can meet halfway! Just remember that brighter screen equals less battery.

Yes I noticed that too, there is a mod to fix that and some custom roms that fix it too, take a look at the dev section.

Try to use applications that allow you to adjust the comfort brightness for different conditions. First you teach the application and then it set the brightness automatically. I use lux brightness. You can try to find an alternative.
Auto brightness on my Evo (stock ROM) was always way too bright in a dim room. I haven't seen the GS3 yet but I'm guessing that there is no slider adjustment when auto brightness is enabled? This is one thing that works really well on my iPod touch. With auto brightness enabled you can still adjust the overall level.

Ok, so I have my brightness all the way up, and I am still having trouble seeing my screen, and yes, it's bright out, but I don't have it in the direct sun light. I know that my iPhone had no problem with screen being brighter outside. I have the auto brightness disabled. Now, when I bought the phone they put a glass protector on it which is clear, and I also have it in the Otter Box case as well. Could this reduce the brightness? Lastly, if the phone is what it is, then is there an app that will make the display brighter? Thank you so much.

use brighter backgrounds, they will eat up battery a little bit quicker but the brighter colors will actually make the screen brighter. using a black background will cause the screen to produce less overall brightness.

If I remember correctly, the screen can get brighter with the auto brightness turned on. Can't remember where I read that, but the thinking was that super bright mode may damage the screen if it's on that way all the time.
Don't forget, Iphone has LCD, we have Amoled, which one of the drawbacks is, it sucks in the sun.

on top of the auto brigntenss through android, i believe that samsung has a lowe level brightness auto adjustment that changes depending on the image on the screen eg darker when the image is bright and vise versa

It is called CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control).

Check out this picture. My HTC M8 is on the left. New S6 on right. Both turned up to full brightness. My M8 screen looks so much more vivid and colorful. Anybody else seen this issue?
Have you checked your gs6's display settings? I'm curious if this is a hardware issue on your device or if it's just one of the other profiles - make sure it's set to "adaptive".

check to make sure auto brightness did not turn off. For some reason many people, including myself, have seen the auto brightness become automatically unchecked and brightness lowered.
I too came from the M8. I have yet to decide which screen I like more. I love AMOLED blacks and colors, but the screen seems so dim (especially if you've been looking at any other screen) and the whites seem yellow.
Full brightness on recent Samsung flagships is achieved on auto brightness in full sunlight, not in the dark. If you did this outdoors at noon you'd have a different result.
Make sure auto brightness is off and adaptive display is on
I took this picture inside. Auto brightness was off. Adaptive on. No power saving mode on. I can't stand auto brightness on phones. I usually keep my screens around 85-90%. Both S6s are going back and I'm going with the M9 or Nexus 6. Way too many issues with these phones.

You must have a bad unit or power saving mode going crazy or something. I have the M8 and M9 and the edge screen is night and day brighter. Like not even in the same league brighter and more vibrant. It makes the M9 look dull and lifeless.
Yeah mine is a bad unit too. It's going back tomorrow. I've played with the power saving and all display modes. No go.

I have the M9 in my hand right now. Camera is awful and it does have heating issues. Always warm. I do like sense 7 over touchwiz but I can't handle the crappy camera. Look at the photo comparison here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/photos-comparisons-s6-vs-t3076641

Let me know if it's any different with the new unit. If so, I may have to send mine back too.
So I grabbed a flashlight and turned on auto bright. I put the flashlight over the sensor and the screen got extremely bright. Way more than having the manual setting at it's highest level. Maybe they'll update the software so we can turn the screen up to where we want it.

I can't use Samsung's "auto" mode for brightness. Always too dim for me. I have been using Lux Auto Brightness (paid version although there is a free version you can try) for a long time and I find it does a much better job than any "auto" mode from manufacturers. I think they make it as dim as possible to help with battery stats. But it is pointless if my battery lasts twice as long and I can't see the screen LOL

I stay in a dark environment so it always keeps it on the lowest brightness, waaaaay too low, especially compared to my computer. try lux auto brightness. You can set your values to what you want in each environment and time of day. Love it for fine tuning how my auto brightness works. The only issue with the edge is the screen does not blur when you swipe out your contacts from the edge. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

OK, at some point I will finally update the calib.cfg file again. But for now here are the settings I am using with a KCAL enabled kernel to remove ghosting from my screen as well as drasically improve contrast and colors.
I use Kernel Adiutor:

Under 'screen' section >
Screen Color (This kills the ghosting a lot of users are experiencing as well as removes the blue tinge the screen has):
Red = 250
Green = 250
Blue = 235
Minimum RGB value = 35
Saturation Intensity = 27
Screen Hue = 1520
Screen Value = 112
Screen Contrast = 132

I have been running it for awhile and it looks fantastic and I have not had anymore ghosting. It also makes the screen look similar to my Note Edge when I first got it. Contrast is improved a LOT. Colors are better. They are not over saturated. Very close to natural. Whites are white and not blue (at least on my display) etc.

I don't think so, no. These require a kernel with KCAL integrated. You can kinda adjust the screen values without root by going into settings > general > accessibility > vision > screen color adjustment > manual
But that's about the best you can do beyond nonroot screen filter overlay like cflumens supports etc

A little bit over 15 hrs and no ghosting. My only beef is how the blues look but it's a good configuration overall, easy on the eyes.

How do the blues look? I need to put the phone with a color calibrator and check it. Mine look pretty close to natural when I eye ball it. I'll keep working on it

You're doing a great service for us all. Blue's and greens come off slightly dull like they could use a little saturation but if it's at the cost of prevent the ghosting effect i understand.

hm. The colors in general are probably a little duller. The vibrancy and contrast and all is usually cranked up on phones Samsung is especially awful about it. People like the 'pop' though. I just compared several shades of blue and greens with the screen at max brightness using the camera app, the colors are almost dead on to my eyes. Granted i have to manually drop the ISO a couple notches because the phone wants to automatically crank it too high (like true-to-life brightness/colors around my work desk it wants to use an ISO of 600 and ISO 200 was real world accurate. heh).

You have spectrophotometer? I would love to see some values to use, but wouldn't it be different between devices? No panel is exactly the same, or?
I seem to remember that being reiterated quite a lot on various display discussions I've followed in the past.

There is a variance between panels but it's not as severe as it has been in the past.

I use it with CF.lumen.
I don't use comfort view. If you enable it with my settings on you'll have a really yellow display.
Be sweet if there was a way to get kcal with stock kernel. I do get the image retention on mine pretty bad sometimes

Just tried it as well on H918 running WETA with stock kernel and it installed and activated properly but nothing changed. Tried a few different configs and reboots just to see but nothing. Thanks for the share though. It'd be just what I'm looking for if can get to work
Is there any chance applying these changes would cause auto brightness to stop working? Possibly it's coincidence, but I changed my screen settings to exactly how it was in the OP, and since then I've noticed auto brightness no longer works on my phone? I don't see how making these changes would cause that but I figured I'd ask here to be sure, or to see if anyone else has the same problem.
